Major League Soccer has had a mixed bag as far as its adventures in signing foreign players. They mainly have been over-the-hill players looking to make their last few dollars before they call it a career.

New rules allowed the Galaxy to sign David Beckham and now the Columbus Crew have joined in.

According to SI.com, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a skilled Argentine midfielder, signed a one-year deal with the Crew.

Their analysis thinks Schelotto will provide more scoring chances for strikers Jason Garey and Andy Herron. And he can help bring along promising Eddie Gaven. So far the Crew is 0-0-2, both games being 0-0 draws.

A "skilled" Argentine midfielder??? In May, the guy turns 34. If that mad genius Danny Ferry bought out Donyell Marshall's contract, and Marshall then signed a contract with Tel Aviv, would the crazed Israeli press refer to Marshall as a "skilled" American forward?

They've been talking about soccer being "the next big thing" for nearly 50 years. Jeez, give it up, already. There is a monumental difference between kids, soccer moms and the real pros. I wish this country's press would stop pushing the hype button.

The bottom line is that American football will always mean nothing to the rest of the world. And the rest of the world's football will always mean nothing to America.

Two 0-0 draws kind of says it all.

MLS hype? From American press? I've seen scant evidence of that the past 12 years.
You want to see hype? Try women's basketball. At least MLS has paying customers.
I've got to do research on this Schelotto fellow. If I gotta do that, that in itself is probably a poor sign if a team uses its "Designated Player" (signed above the salary cap) on a has been, or never was.
