Wh0 woke up Z

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Zydrunas Ilgauskas is playing great basketball right now, turning into the perfect sidekick for LeBron James. He had a career high 19 rebounds in Game 4 on Monday night.

If he continues to play like that it won't matter whom the Cavs play in the second round — the Nets or the Raptors. The Nets lead 3-1 with Game 5 on Tuesday night in Toronto.

The earliest the Cavs will play again is Saturday at the Q.

As long as Z doesn't get groggy in the next few days, I think the Cavs should reach the Eastern Conference final.

Job-saving day

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn and Eric Wright were the Browns' selections on the first day of the NFL Draft.

Not a bad haul at all for GM Phil Savage. The only real question besides the risk in taking Wright with his questionable past is the cost of the picks.

Thomas was a no-brainer, really. He is the best at his position in the draft. And as long as he doesn't morph into Robert Gallery or Tony Mandarich, no one can argue with his selection

Quinn cost a lot in terms of draft picks (a second-rounder this year and a first next season), and his signing bonus and contract will be set higher than going 22nd in the draft will indicate. It will interesting to see how he does compared with the quarterbacks taken in the second round yesterday. The flaws in his game are arm strength and accuracy (the same as Charlie Frye). Strengths is his work in a pro-style offense with Charlie Weis. There is a reason he went 22nd in the draft, but the same thing could have been said about Tom Brady going in the sixth round.

Wright had some major problems at Southern Cal and transfered to UNLV, where he stayed out of trouble. He cost third and fourth round picks to move up.

It came across Saturday like Savage and Crennel know that their time is short. Which it is. The real questions is did they give away too much to try to secure their positions and make a big splash to cover their flaws.

What's next?

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

It seems unless Savage makes another trade that they need defensive line help in the third round.

A lot to buy Quinn

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

The Browns take Brady Quinn at No. 22 but it cost them this season's second-round pick and next season's No. 1.

Was the cost too much?

Trade talk

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Look for the chances of the Browns to trade up to take Brady Quinn grow if the Jacksonville Jaguars pass him with the 17th pick.

Would you trade next season's No. 1 to move up into the first round this season?

Browns choose safely

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

The Browns take offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the third pick. No one can argue the need but if QB Brady Quinn goes to the Pro Bowl in the near future look out for the backlash on GM Phil Savage.

Weekend packages

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

There is plenty of Browns, Cavaliers and Indians material on Ohio.com and in the Beacon Journal this weekend.

On the site now you'll find Patrick McManamon's prediction that Joe Thomas will become the Browns' left tackle today. He picks the rest of the draft, too.

Sunday, look for Terry Pluto's analysis of the Browns draft and also the Cavs' performance in Game 3. Brian Windhorst also will provide coverage of Game 3 from Washington, D.C.

Nate Ulrich will be filing reports on each of the Browns selection Saturday, and that will be posted immediately after each selection on Ohio.com. George Thomas will be blogging on the draft all day. So as you watch the NFL Network and ESPN coverage of the draft take a look for Thomas' take, too.

Sheldon Ocker examines the Indians' possible problems of too many platoons, as he continues to cover the home series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Thomas a Brown

Friday, April 27th, 2007

If the Raiders take JaMarcus Russell, then the Browns will take Joe Thomas.

The Lions know just how valuable Calvin Johnson is, so I think they will take him at No. 2 and either keep him or trade him. I also can't see Phil Savage taking a quarterback. He might want Quinn and he knows he needs Adrian Peterson, but my feel recently is that he wants to fix the line so that he can spend money next offseason on something else.

I know I have said Quinn would the pick but I think Savage is too smart to pass on Thomas. Or at least he should be too smart.

We find out Saturday.

Draft coverage

Friday, April 27th, 2007

I have DirecTv so I have enjoyed the NFL Network since its beginning. The network does a tremendous job of giving you NFL Films quality coverage between games each week. Its Super Bowl coverage is great, and I am sure that its draft coverage is good, too.

But ESPN and Mel Kiper Jr. and the rest of the gang can't be beat.

I used to stay home from school to watch the drafts on ESPN in the early 80s, just to see whom the Steelers would take.

I think I recall Louis Lipps being compared with Lynn Swann on draft day. A couple of bad hamstrings cut his career short.

Anyway, when I watch the draft I will be sticking with ESPN maybe it is just a habit but I think it probably is just better, too.

Peterson hurt?

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Don Banks of SI.com is reporting that Adrian Peterson, the top back in the draft from Oklahoma, reinjured his broken collarbone in the Fiesta Bowl.

Now every year something pops up before the draft about a player's injury history.

In this case, though, the Browns just can't afford to take a player who will get a lot of money if he is not able to play this season or will miss significant amount of time.

Just another wrinkle in Saturday's drama.
