"Friday Night Lights"

November 19, 2009

So I was watching the latest episode of "Friday Night Lights" on my little laptop, via the press feed from DirecTV, with less than perfect video and a big DirecTV logo on the screen much of the time. And I was so drawn into it and touched by it that I said I small thank-you [...]

Straight Out of Lackawanna and Other Viewing Notes

October 30, 2009

Above, the "Male Prima Donna" video. Three minutes of "Office" merriment. After the jump, notes on "The Office," "30 Rock," "Grey's Anatomy," "Survivor: Samoa" and "CSI." And, before we get there, you can find my latest chat with Lynne Sherwin about "Dancing With the Stars" here.

"Chuck" S2 on DVD, "True Jackson" Returns

October 29, 2009

More notes from the mail, including the announcement of a "Chuck" set with the 3-D telecast:
The government’s most vital secret agent is back, and this time he’s got a pocket protector full of new tricks when Warner Home Video releases Chuck: The Complete Second Season on DVD and Blu-ray on January 5, 2010. Executive producers [...]

Thursday Notebook

October 29, 2009

The Deschanel sisters team up for "Bones," "Glee" goes gold, more love from me for "Modern Family," a link to the mailbag and a video for the folks at the Beacon Journal, all after the jump. And, what did you think of the new "Friday Night Lights"?

"30 Rock" Returns, Other Notes

October 15, 2009

After the jump is my Beacon Journal column from Sunday about "30 Rock." As I mentioned in my most recent "Talking television" video, I'm not thrilled with the beginning of the new season. The column offers some details.
Does anyone else find this sponsorship deal as funny as I do:
The Under Armour All-America Selection Tour announced [...]

More Thursday Notes

October 8, 2009

According to a Twitter post by one of the show's producers, "Modern Family" has gotten a full-season pickup. Excellent news, since — as you know — I really like the show. Less cheerful: Report, also on Twitter, that "Southland" has gotten the ax, and its second season wasn't even due to start airing for another [...]

Hello … Leno.

September 14, 2009

Tonight begins what may or may not be a watershed moment in the history of television, as NBC tries airing Jay Leno in prime time five nights a week. After the jump, my Beacon Journal column on the subject, and on the fundamental question for viewers in this business experiment.

More Notes: "Say Anything" Anniversary Edition, "Community" Stuff

August 21, 2009

"Say Anything" is memorable, I think, even for people who have not seen it, because the boom box scene has been so often invoked. (If memory serves, "Drop Dead Diva" did an homage to it not long ago.) Details of the new release, due Nov. 3, are after the jump. The release is also of [...]

TNT has renewed the Jada Pinkett Smith drama, "HawthoRNe" for a second season. And NBC is putting episodes of "Days of Our Lives" online for people who miss them on the air. Fox, meanwhile, has scheduled a special on the Octo-Mom.

"Friday Night Lights" Returns in October

August 5, 2009

If you have DirecTV, that is.
When NBC announced its 2009-10 plans in May, it said that "FNL" would be back on its air in Summer 2010. Apparently that was reaffirmed today on the TV critics' press tour, which I have been following via the blogs, FB posts and Tweets of my colleagues attending.
But, as you [...]

Ben Silverman Exiting NBC

July 27, 2009

You can read the announcement, which focuses on Silverman's successor, here. While the network has had some shows I like very much, including "The Office" and "30 Rock," overall it has been disastrously unsuccessful in recent years. I mean, "Kath & Kim"? Revamps of "Knight Rider" and "Bionic Woman"? And this Jay Leno prime-time move [...]

Wednesday Notebook

July 1, 2009

Tom Shales has offered a defense of TV critics. Too bad it's short and overloaded with strained jokes.
Recent Blu-ray announcements include "My Cousin Vinny" (Aug. 4) and the original movie of "MASH" (Sept. 1). I'm a fan of Blu-ray in a lot of cases, but not convinced that it will add anything to the viewing [...]

Thursday Notebook

June 4, 2009

Today is mailbag day and the latest is here.
Have been trying to get out of "I'm a Celebrity," but reports flew yesterday that Speidi were coming back, and so they did. I managed to just DVR the show and fast-forward through stuff, but caught LDP's rat bites (ewwww), the setup for a Battle of Baldwins [...]
