Best Director, Picture

March 8, 2010

Barbra Streisand to present. Kathryn Bigelow wins. Yay! Yay! Yay!
"Hurt Locker" wins best picture. More Yays!
But the telecast ran longer than last year's 3:23, even with a very swift awarding of the best-picture Oscar.
Story filed. Going home soon. Back on the road at 4 a.m. to be on WEWS at 5 and beyond…

Best Actress

March 8, 2010

More colorful anecdotes killing me on deadline. Forest Whitaker on Bullock (whom he directed); Michael Sheen on Mirren; Peter Sarsgaard for Carey Mulligan; Oprah for Gabourey Sidibe, who is wiping away tears; Stanley Tucci for Streep.
Sean Penn to present. Bullock for the win.

Best Actor

March 8, 2010

Co-stars of the nominees talk about them. We may run longer than last year's 3:23 … Jeff Bridges' is by Michelle Pfeiffer, who did not appear in "Crazy Heart"; Clooney and Firth get tributes from co-stars in their current movies. Morgan Freeman gets Tim Robbins, from "Shawshank." But Robbins has a good story. Colin Farrell [...]

Oscars: Best Foreign Language Film

March 8, 2010

Tarantino and Almodovar to present, with weak banter and a creepy laugh from QT.
Winner: "The Secret in Their Eyes," from Argentina. Winner makes a really bad "Avatar" joke. Gets the wrap-up music.
Kathy Bates introduces the "Avatar" clip. Because she's its biggest fan.
Proving that lame jokes are not the exclusive province of Argentina.

Oscars Continued

March 7, 2010

Back from early filing. Overheard some tech awards being given. Now listening to James Taylor sing "In My Life" to the roll call of show biz folk who died since the last ceremony.
Finally getting a good look at Jennifer Lopez's dress. Will Billy Barty emerge from under it?
Every year they worry about the Oscars [...]

Oscar Continues: Short Film Awards

March 7, 2010

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Saldana walk VERY carefull down the stairs. Introduce segment on short films, leading to the awards. About which I have pretty much no knowledge.
Animated short winner: "Logorama." Mildly amusing acceptance.
Documentary short winner: "Music by Prudence." Gee, did Roger Ross Williams get knocked aside by his co-winner or what? And they got [...]

Oscar Continues: Original Screenplay, John Hughes Tribute

March 7, 2010

Tina Fey and Robert Downey Jr. with the writing awards. (Yay, nice and early.) Funny that they put the camera on Robin Williams while Tina complains about improvising.
Original screenplay: "The Hurt Locker," Mark Boal. Well deserved.
Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick pay tribute to John Hughes. Getting nostalgic for "Planes, Trains & Automobiles." Wow, long segment. [...]

Best Supporting Actor

March 7, 2010

Christoph Waltz, so no early surprise. "Oscar and Penelope (Cruz), that's uber-bingo!" he says. Nice speech.
Clip from "The Blind Side," intro by Ryan Reynolds, then commercial.
The Cameron Diaz/Steve Carell jokes are weak. And here's Barbara Walters, back less than an hour after saying goodbye to Oscar night.

The Oscars Begin, 8:30 – 8:45

March 7, 2010

I'm not asking too much, just that at least one acting category and best adapted screenplay be announced before 10:30 p.m.
More notes post-jump.

Oscar Notes (A Pause of Sorts)

March 7, 2010

I should take a minute to mention where I have a rooting interest tonight:
Best picture — "The Hurt Locker," but would be happy for "Up in the Air." And would take "Precious" or "Up" over "Avatar." Like you, I have read the speculation that "Inglourious Basterds" will ride preferential voting into the best-picture Oscar, and [...]

Oscar Notes: 7:30 – 7:45

March 7, 2010

Liked seeing Meryl Streep giving Seacrest a hard time, although it did not appear to be entirely in fun…
Giddy Gabourey Sidibe calls the Oscars "like Hollywood prom." Good dress, and I like her — "a normal person in a fantasy world," she says.

February 15, 2010

This from ABC News:
Barbara Walters is putting an end to one of Oscar night's greatest traditions: her annual sit-down with some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
Today on ABC's "The View," the veteran newswoman announced that after this year, she will no longer host a "Barbara Walters Special" prior to the Oscars. Her program has been [...]

Oscar Nominations: The Video

February 3, 2010

This is a companion of sorts to the written material I posted about the Oscars, including my interview with Walter Kirn, mentioned in the video, and the list below of which nominated movies are available on DVD. A little different content here than other places.

Oscar Nominations

February 2, 2010

You can find the complete list by category here. If you want to look at nominations by movie, that's here.
From my immediate kneejerk Twitter/FB reaction: "Happy includes: G Sidibe, J Renner, Up in the Air, Up, Mo'Nique, Christoph Waltz, In the Loop. But D9 stole Star Trek's best pic nom." I should also note "The [...]

Tan, Rested and Ready

February 24, 2009

Well, not tan. But I'm more or less over my post-Oscar/"Good Morning Cleveland" sleep deprivation and have managed to catch almost all the TV I missed last week. Will be posting something later today, as well as any items that look interesting in the email. As for the latest of my forays into TV, you [...]

Oscar Blog: Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Picture

February 23, 2009

Reese Witherspoon presents. Danny Boyle continues "Slumdog Millionaire's" big night, which has yet to include a surprise. Boyle jumps up and down at the podium, saying he promised his children that, if he won, he would act like Tigger from "Winnie the Pooh." Also praises the Oscar show. Also, consulting notes, thanks the people of [...]

Oscar Blog: Jerry Lewis, Music, Foreign Language Film, Tribute to Dead Moviemakers

February 22, 2009

Back from my break in time to see Eddie Murphy present the Jean Hersholt award to Jerry Lewis. Eddie mispronounces Hersholt, and the camera goes to Jerry's box, where he's not. Clips from his films and material focusing on Lewis's work with MDA. Jerry onstage to get the award. Looking pretty good considering the health [...]

Oscar Blog: Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup

February 22, 2009

So far, Hugh Jackman is an affable and pleasant host but not exactly exciting.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Daniel Craig with art direction. Winner: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Which is a great looking movie, if not a great movie. (See my previous post for more thoughts on "Button.")
Costume design (which Parker could have used [...]

Oscar Blog: Screenplay Awards, Animated Films

February 22, 2009

Screenwriting tribute, with a script read by Steve Martin and Tina Fey leading into their presence. Much mocking: Martin notes that a movie may begin "with a good idea for the poster."
Original screenplay presented with scene from nominated films and bits of the script onscreen (with the WALL-E lines referring to "Wally"). Winner: Dustin [...]
