Friday Notebook

November 6, 2009

A few thoughts on "Community," "Parks and Recreation," "The Office," "30 Rock." But if women are on a scale from Cleopatra to Eleanor Roosevelt, what's the comparable men-dex?
Also, I have recently been getting some additional info about the readership for this blog. So, besides my friends in the US and Canada, hello to all of [...]

Straight Out of Lackawanna and Other Viewing Notes

October 30, 2009

Above, the "Male Prima Donna" video. Three minutes of "Office" merriment. After the jump, notes on "The Office," "30 Rock," "Grey's Anatomy," "Survivor: Samoa" and "CSI." And, before we get there, you can find my latest chat with Lynne Sherwin about "Dancing With the Stars" here.

"30 Rock" Returns, Other Notes

October 15, 2009

After the jump is my Beacon Journal column from Sunday about "30 Rock." As I mentioned in my most recent "Talking television" video, I'm not thrilled with the beginning of the new season. The column offers some details.
Does anyone else find this sponsorship deal as funny as I do:
The Under Armour All-America Selection Tour announced [...]

Talking television

October 14, 2009

Video topics include "30 Rock's" return, a documentary on Joan Baez, which airs on PBS tonight, a few new DVD releases and the great Andy Griffith in "A Face in the Crowd."

A scene from "A Face in the Crowd"

And that was shot more than 50 years ago. The person posting it on YouTube compares the [...]

Fix the Emmys: 2009 Edition

July 16, 2009

I've already posted some notes, as well as writing a brief column covering some of the same ground for tomorrow's Beacon Journal. Now that I have complained, I am going to be — wait for it — pro-active and offer four ways the Emmys can make themselves better. To wit:
1. Kill the "best miniseries" category. [...]

The HeldenFiles: Should that be a Kent-ney?

May 15, 2009

Should That Be a Kent-Ney? The season finale of 30 Rock found Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) trying to get a kidney for his father (Alan Alda) through an all-star musical performance. The music video, He Needs a Kidney, is now available on iTunes for 99 cents, with all proceeds going to the National Kidney Foundation.

Friday Notebook: "30 Rock"

May 15, 2009

"A guy crying about a chicken and a baby? I thought this was a comedy show." — Alan Alda on "30 Rock"
Lots to write about, including the above, "The Office" (lovely), "Bones" (weird) and "Survivor" (hooray). But we'll start with "30 Rock."

"30 Rock": Doin' the Twist

May 1, 2009

One of the little gags in last night's "30 Rock" involved characters saying "twist" when the plot took a surprise (or at least sitcom-surprise) turn. But the biggest twist may have been how uneasily real it got in the confrontation between Jack and his mother Colleen. …

"The Amazing Race" And Other Viewing Notes

April 27, 2009

I know that synchronized diving is difficult, but why did neither Tammy/Victor nor Kisha/Jen trying counting out loud to get themselves in synch? "One … Two … Three … Jump!" would get you to at least a 3 or 4, wouldn't it?
More on "Race" after the jump, along with "30 Rock," "Parks and Recreation," [...]

Funny Business: "The Office," "30 Rock"

April 17, 2009

I have seen only the first five minutes or so of "Parks and Recreation" (liked the Easter-egg-hunt bit) but I will save it for a separate post. I did get through the night's warhorses, "30 Rock," and "The Office," both of which were quite satisfying.

Thursday Comedy: "The Office," "30 Rock," "Parks and Recreation"

April 10, 2009

The Emmy magazine cover notwithstanding, I'd say the Thursday comedy was about 60-40 good, and the other 40 wasn't entirely awful. …

"30 Rock," "The Office"

March 27, 2009

I'm hoping NBC will post Liz's ad in uninterrupted form. But until it does, here's the clip from the show. Many, many, laughs …

"Amazing Race" and Other Notes: "Taken," "30 Rock," "The Office," "CSI"

March 8, 2009

I feel as if I have been unsuccessfully stacking wood all weekend, taking care of various chores, thinking about blogging but never quite getting around to it. I've got a backlog of Thursday shows in my head, went to the movie "Taken" last night, watched a fair amount of Akron-Kent State basketball on TV and, [...]

Thursday Catch-Ups: "30 Rock," "Survivor"

February 27, 2009

I'm not sure who made me more annoyed on Thursday, Larry King on "30 Rock" or Tyson and Coach (left) on "Survivor." But probably Coach. Look at the preening in that photo…

Stuff I've Been Watching

February 9, 2009

Notes on recent telecasts of "30 Rock," "The Office," "Private Practice," "Grey's Anatomy," "Saturday Night Live," "Bones," "Lie to Me" and "The Closer" after the jump. (I have also seen tonight's "Closer" and will make a brief non-spoiler comment about that.)

Friday Notebook

February 6, 2009

I had a couple of days off from my job, but not from everything else in my life, so I have gotten behind on my watch-and-blog routine. I would be happy to discuss Lord Rochester, "Imperfect Enjoyment" and the 1680 editions, if you're so inclined.
But if we're staying with TV, later today, I expect to [...]

TV Thursday: "CSI," "The Office," "30 Rock"

January 23, 2009

We've gotten to know a little bit about new "CSI" guy Ray Langston in the transition episodes dealing with Grissom's departure, but last night's show gave us the first detailed look at him. We knew he was smart but what was interesting about last night's show was to see how eager he is to please. [...]
