If you liked the premiere of "New Amsterdam," you may be pleased with tonight's second episode. And if you were lukewarm about the premiere, you should give it a second chance tonight. …

Here's the official Fox synopsis of the episode:

Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Eva (Zuliekha Robinson) investigate the suspicious death of a student at a prestigious New York City private school which leads to the revelation of a twisted “affair.” One of Amsterdam’s biggest secrets is revealed, and we flashback to 1941 when the secret began in the “Golden Boy” episode of NEW AMSTERDAM airing Thursday, March 6 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

As was the case with the premiere, this episode is more interesting when it deals with how Amsterdam has handled centuries of immortality than when it is focusing on a police case. The case does provide some parallels to what Amsterdam has gone through, but those are labored. And it's interesting to see what Amsterdam has done over the years, especially the depth of his connection to Omar (Stephen McKinley Henderson).

I don't want to get into spoiler-y details. But the show tells us that Amsterdam's life has been a lot more complicated and emotional than suggested in throwaway lines about having had hundreds of girlfriends. It's also willing to put his search for "the one" aside for long stretches, since the more basic story is strong on its own. Liked it quite a bit. Where the first telecast had me thinking, well, maybe I'll watch one more, the second had me really wanting to see a third.
