Could Michael Ian Black be the show's salvation? Notes after the jump …

As I have said more times than I can remember, "Reaper" is a show that has seemed to have limitless potential but too often hasn't measured up to it. Last night's episode, though, finally put a whole bunch of loose pieces together, even if it may be too late. (The show comes back on April 22, and I suspect CW will have made most or all of its fall 2008 decisions by then. And The CW has become increasingly girly, and "Reaper" is decidedly not girly. It's a guys' show through and through.)

Anyway, the addition of the demon neighbors a week ago, and their becoming part of Sam's orbit last night, moved the show much closer to a "Buffy"/"Angel" world. All right, close to some of the funny episodes of those shows; still, the genuine threat to Andi's well-being — and Sam going all Peter Parker (or at least the "Spider-Man 1" Peter Parker) — gave the show some heft that it has not as a rule been comfortable with.

All of which is a roundabout way of saying the show may have figured itself out. And not in a that's-a-good-episode way but in a way that lets viewers think there are plenty of stories yet to tell. Of course, we have to wait until April 22 to know if that is really the case, and we may not get to see much beyond that.

The "Jericho" series finale — or at least the CBS finale, since apparently there is still some scrambling to keep the show going — offered a pretty open-ended wrap. Since there's still a war to be fought, a nation still divided, a Jericho that's a mess, hostile forces down the road in New Bern … Well, you get the idea. If not more episodes, some two-hour movies perhaps?

That said, the finale still had the rushed quality of a show trying to wrap up a bunch of storylines with the understanding that it had run out of time. (See the series finales of "Kidnapped" and "Day Break," other shows that knew the end was nigh, and listen to the commentary on the DVD of the series finale of "Day Break.") And some of the surprises just didn't feel all that surprising. I mean, did anyone not think that (a) aircraft would come after Jake and (b) Texas had its own air force?

Still, I would have liked to see the conclusion drawn out more, and to see what would have been in store for the third season, whether through the ending as presented or the even more inconclusive one that was shot. Of course, I liked the show and, as I've said before, it seemed like a good alternative to "24" for the serialized-TV-thriller crowd.

The "Heroes" soundtrack, below, has been out for a couple of weeks now but I've neglected to explain how much I like it.

It's a blend of soundtrack music from the show (from the splendid Wendy & Lisa), old songs, new songs, not so much songs from the show but — as Allan Arkush says in the CD liner notes — "the music that helps us make the show."

But here's why I like it: because it feels like a seamless, complete thing instead of a collection of songs. When I put it on, I am not inclined to skip cuts because the soundtrack has its own flow, and I don't want to break that up just because I feel like hearing Wilco or Dylan or Death Cab or, yes, Bowie, another time. In fact, it's a better total work than a lot of second-season episodes of "Heroes" have been. To use some honorable old words, it's a concept album. And it knows what that requires.

Pretty nifty illustrations, too.

Notes on "Lost," "Reaper" and "Jericho," after the jump …

This was the last of "Lost" before the writers strike, and now we wait until late April a new episode. And I have to think that the then-looming strike affected this episode. Two specific ways:

– The incredibly long Michael flashback, without benefit of cuts back to the present. It was if the show knew it had to fit in a whole bunch of exposition and explanation, if this proved to be the last telecast of the season. When the flashback was done, we had been in the past for so long, I wanted Sayid to declare, "I thought I told you to talk quickly" — or "What a long explanation that was!"
Of course, the explanation skipped over some key events, especially how exactly Walt and Michael got from the island back to the U.S. And even some of the explanation was deliberately ambiguous. Do we believe everything Zeke told Michael? I don't. And I still think it's possible that Ben has the resources to fake a plane crash. (I have been thinking that Walt and Michael went from their little boat to a freighter controlled by Ben, which took them stateside. And that the present freighter could therefore be Ben's. Not that I'm too paranoid.)
Then there was Ben's declaration that he "I will not kill innocent people" when at war. Are we supposed to forget that his murdering of masses on the island? Then there's my other problem with last night's show.

– The somewhat flat cliffhanger at the end of the episode. The shooting was somewhat interesting but it wasn't a big "Whoaaa" moment. I was expecting someone amazing to step out of the bushes, or some kind of big event that would have us all dying to see the post-strike episode. This didn't cut it.

On to other shows:

After a strong telecast a week ago, "Jericho" was not as good this week. This episode was more about pushing the plot forward, and it did not do that all that well. The post-chase stuff with Hawkins on his cell phone, walking and declaiming, just wasn't effective. On the other hand, there were good bits about the nature of freedom and oppression; it's easy to see the citizens of Jericho as the people of Iraq dealing with their U.S. invaders.
Still, I've begun feeling pessimistic about next week's season finale (possibly series finale). As you know, the show made two endings — one to use if it gets a third season, another to use if it doesn't. The indications seem to be that it won't get a third season, and I can't imagine a final episode that wraps things up in a dramatically satisfying way. Anything I could imagine would have to be implausibly tidy. But I hope I'm surprised.

Then there's "Reaper." Pretty good episode this week. Liked the use of the paintballs to spot the invisible soul. Really enjoyed the stuff with the apartment neighbors, even if we could all see they Are Not What They Seem. (That continues into next week, too.) The Sam-and-the-devil's-daughter stuff has really fizzled, though.

Notes, including spoilers about last night's episode, after the jump …

I saw the first three episodes of the CBS drama's second season before the season began, then went on to other things until there were new episodes to view. Then, of course, I forgot to check back and missed the fourth episode a week ago. Caught it thanks to CBS's Web site and made sure last night to record.

And what a thrill ride last night was. "Jericho" is easily this year's "24" (especially since there is no "24") and in many ways more satisfying than that Fox show.

I have said before that I wasn't crazy about the second season's focus on a vast conspiracy to take over the United States, as opposed to its pondering of the nature of community in the first season. But as the second season has gone on, it has presented a marvelous, tension-ridden vise of a situation for its main characters.

That was especially evident on Tuesday, when the aftermath of the farm shootout found Jake and his friends opposing corrupt mercenaries whose ties to the government made them seem unbeatable. In a profoundly cynical twist, that group of bad guys was driven from power not because they were evil and murderous but because one was stealing money from his bosses. Yet the conflict did not end there, since the government is still in power on the larger stage and individual deaths had to be avenged on the smaller stage that is Jericho itself.

But even before we got to the carnage, we had marvelous acting work by Alicia Coppola (as Mimi) and Brad Beyer (as Stanley). And even as one bad grip on Jericho was removed, that act will probably prompt a tightening of the vise overall.

Is it all credible? Of course not. Neither is "24." Is it all entertaining and riveting? Absolutely. I know, there are only two episodes left to this abbreviated season — and no guarantee of a third. But you've got two spare hours somewhere. Or you could find them.

Same title, kind of a different show …

One of the things I liked a great deal about the first season of "Jericho" was its consideration of what makes a community. In the wake of nuclear disaster, with all the old support systems gone from the outside world, people had to figure out how to run their lives and their towns. People within the town of Jericho had different ideas of how to do things, and the good guys would not always win; one of the more effective twists in "Jericho" was having the mayor (played very well by Gerald McRaney) voted out in favor of a guy who, in better times, had not stood a chance of taking over.

In addition, even as the town of Jericho was working out its issues, other towns were coming to different conclusions. Their ideas, and their needs, then became an issue for Jericho. This wasn't the United States, after all. This wasn't even a united region.

I know that, in addition to all that, "Jericho" was a mystery, with lots of hints and guessing about what had led to the nuclear attacks, who was behind them and what role some people in the town would play, now and in the future. But where that was entertaining enough, it was the question of community that gave "Jericho" its heft. And it's a good one now, as the presidential campaigns ask us to consider what we are as a nation.

So we come to the second season, beginning tonight. The war that loomed at the end of the first season has ended, rather abruptly, as a military force bigger than either town's has arrived to restore order. And not just order. It is offering restored services, a return to normal life, a promise of peace and rebuilding.

So the big questions of the first season have been replaced with a more basic one: What do people want most from their government? And what will they give up in the way of freedom in order to get what they want?

While the first season's story had its roots in 9/11, the second season draws far more on that experience, and on issues that resonate in the current presidential campaigns. (Think just of Mitt Romney's national-security rationale for suspending his quest for the presidency.) But the current questions make "Jericho" a different kind of show, more of a thriller, more of an heir to "Red Dawn," than it was in the first year.

I can understand the reasons for the show making such a tonal shift. After all, CBS brought back "Jericho" reluctantly, after massive lobbying from fans, and then only for seven episodes, and with a loud warning that it had better get an audience quickly, and keep it around. So in going for more of an action/suspense tale, the show is trying to grab folks who were not going to sit through meditations on what a shop owner should do when goods are in short supply.

But in adding new characters, among them a military commander played by Esai Morales, the show has shifted away from some of the first season's players. At least one is not seen at all in the early episodes, and others are shown less frequently. (I suspect some of the change is a budget decision.)

Not that I actively dislike the new season. In fact, I went through those three episodes rather rapidly, and I still have plenty to think about with the show. But I wonder if the longing for new viewers has prompted the show to morph into something that the original fans will view less enthusiastically.

Examples of “Lost” references include a “Lost” poster, the number 6, and the slogan “Find Yourself” in the latest editions of numerous Marvel comics throughout the month. Expect more “Lost” placements to pop up in comic books on stands January 23 and January 30.

Product placement in comics. Is nothing sacred?

This is from Sci Fi:

SCI FI Channel has acquired off-network cable rights to the fan favorite drama series Jericho from CBS Television Distribution. The deal provides SCI FI the rights to seasons one and two of the series. Jericho will make its debut on SCI FI with a four-episode marathon on Monday, February 11, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. Jericho will begin airing in its regular time slot on Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on February 18. SCI FI will simulcast Jericho in HD on SCI FI HD.

“Jericho is a gripping science fiction series that SCI FI Channel is excited to add to our schedule,” said Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President of Programming and Original Movies. “Thanks to the passion and persistence of its loyal viewers who saved this program from being canceled, new viewers can now experience this show for the first time on the SCI FI Channel while CBS continues the story in its second season run starting this February."

The second season starts Feb. 12 on CBS, the day after the Sci Fi marathon. I have seen three new episodes and am anxious for more. I promise to say more before the show returns.

Game shows, news magazines, the return of two popular reality series, the season premieres of two returning scripted programs and the debut of a new comedy highlight new programming to CBS's prime time lineup in January and February.

Ushering in the New Year is the game show POWER OF 10, reality favorites BIG BROTHER and SURVIVOR, the return of THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE and JERICHO, the series premiere of the comedy THE CAPTAIN and original episodes of 48 HOURS MYSTERY.

POWER OF 10, hosted by Drew Carey ("The Price is Right"), returning Wednesday, Jan. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), is a high-stakes game that challenges contestants to guess the behaviors, opinions and lifestyle choices of the American public for the chance to win $10 million dollars. Each week, contestants must decide if they have their finger on the pulse of the American majority and can accurately predict the results of these nationwide surveys.

All new broadcasts of 48 HOURS MYSTERY will air on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and Tuesday, Jan. 29 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT both nights). Susan Zirinsky is executive producer.

THE CAPTAIN, premiering Monday, Jan. 28 (8:30-9:00 PM, ET/PT), is a comedy about a wildly eclectic group of people whose lives are intertwined through the place they all call home, a fabled Hollywood apartment building, El Capitan, which they’ve dubbed "The Captain." It stars Fran Kranz ("The TV Set"), Chris Klein ("American Pie"), Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"), Raquel Welch ("The Three Musketeers"), comedian Al Madrigal, Valerie Azlynn ("Two and a Half Men") and Joanna Garcia ("Reba").

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, the critically acclaimed comedy about a divorced working mom trying to juggle motherhood, work and dating, starring Emmy Award winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, begins its third season Monday, Jan. 28 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT).

The 16th edition of SURVIVOR premieres Thursday, Feb. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT). Hosted by Jeff Probst, SURVIVOR has won its time period every week this season in viewers and key demographics.

The first ever winter edition of BIG BROTHER premieres Tuesday, Feb. 12 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) with additional broadcasts on Wednesdays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) beginning Feb. 13 and Sundays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) beginning Feb. 17. Julie Chen returns as host of the live weekly eviction broadcast.

BIG BROTHER has been a summer reality program staple for the past eight years, attracting a young demographic in each of its three weekly broadcasts.

Back in response to one of the most unprecedented and impassioned displays of fan support on behalf of a television program, JERICHO, the drama about what happens in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion in the once peaceful town of Jericho, returns for its second season on Tuesday, Feb. 12 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT). JERICHO stars Skeet Ulrich, Ashley Scott, Lennie James, Kenneth Mitchell, Brad Beyer and Alicia Coppola.

This is from CBS's press site:

To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of "Jericho" for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more "Jericho," we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that "Jericho" will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting "Jericho" on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of "Jericho" in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler

President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts : )

One more sign that I'm getting old: I have trouble sleeping late in the morning …

So it's a Saturday and still, around 6 a.m., my body clock was saying that it was time to do something other than lie around. And one of the things I've done is finally watch the season finale of "Jericho."

Series finale, that is, although the show clearly held out hope for another go-round, strewing the episode with cliffhangers — the battle with New Bern, the short-term help and long-term threat from the military, a villain seemingly in charge of the government, the arrival of Titus Welliver (not a guy you get only for a couple of scenes, any more than "Grey's Anatomy" had Chyler Leigh just drop by), Hawkins and his nuke … Plenty of keep the thing going.

On the other hand, it wasn't as sure-handed as some "Jericho's" I've seen. Anyone who didn't expect a major character to say "Nuts" before the faceoff with New Bern hasn't paid read the Big Book of Narrative-Telegraphing Anecdotes. And while the killing of Gerald McRaney underscored that rebuilding a nation means major sacrifice, it also deprived the show of a strong voice of authority (not to mention an actor who knows how to deliver a speech); I suspect that renewal was hinging on a shift more toward the younger characters, and McRaney was so strong onscreen that he had to be moved aside.

Also, even as McRaney was dying, I would have expected more urgency about the pending attack. And, since the Jericho folks controlled the high ground at and around the farm — and since Skeet's climb let him take out the machine-gunner, wouldn't you have expected them to position some snipers above the fight?

Still, I would have been watching next season. And, since there won't be one, I have rationalized my way into treating the season finale as a proper finish. Goes like this:

As "Jericho" began, the town was divided, its citizens awash in pettiness, selfishiness and power grabs. In addition, the Green family is fragmented and in pain from problems old and new. At the series' end, both the town and the Greens have come to understand what's important in life. They are united, their foes coming from the outside, not tearing them apart from within. Much the way the "Angel" finale (and, for that matter, Disney's Davy Crockett) argued that you fight for good even when the odds say you might not win, "Jericho" reached the same place. It ended with people stronger than ever, heads high, no conflict frightening enough to make them bow.

Colts. Bears. Talking lions. K-Fed. Katie. Dave and Oprah. Rainy night in Florida (and on CBS camera lenses). Prince rules. More after the jump ...

(The following was written in real time as I watched the game. Hey, I sound like a "24" opening!)

It's been a cold (single digits) and busy (church, grocery shopping, a Monday column) Sunday, and I managed to avoid most of the pregame stuff until 6 p.m. -- well, aside from little bits, such as Katie Couric's scary hair. I've got no dog in this fight, either, but I'll be watching some.

And, having avoided the first four hours of coverage, I feel curiously refreshed. Almost as if I was experiencing the "light sprinkle" falling on the field. Colts introduced. Who for music. Smoke already over the stands. NFC's turn. Sideline interview with Brian Urlacher. Sound goes out during the interview. Commercial break. Paul Newman voiceover for Ronald McDonald House. (Sad how weary he sounds.) Truck ad. "Ghost Rider." Celebs at "Chad Johnson's Super Bowl Party," for NFL Network. Promo for CBS Monday comedies. All right, I'm bored.

Back to the game. Color guard. Moment of silence for the Florida tornado victims. You can still hear some voices here and there. The "light sprinkle" looks wetter. National Anthem -- Billy Joel, on the piano. I like Billy. This is not his song, although he plays it completely straight. The rain is pretty brutal, too. Who pays to dry out the piano? Marlee Matlin doing the sign language!

Another commercial break. "Norbit" ad. Jessica Simpson for ... Pizza Hut. Blockbuster ad bashing Netflix. Too bad they don't mention that the reason many of us went to Netflix is that BLOCKBUSTER NEVER HAD THE NEW MOVIES IN ITS STORES!!! So the store deal isn't all that attractive.

Coin toss. Rain still bad -- the light hitting it makes it look like snow.

Another commercial break. Another truck ad. Back for the kickoff. Phil Simms says that kicking might be an advantage for the Colts because in a big game, it's better to start with your defense. Bears take the kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Bears get to kick. Colts take it to the 31. Nantz brings up that the Colts were down 18 in the AFC title game. Translation: Please don't change the channel yet. Series ends with a Bears interception.

Bud Light ad. Doritos ad. Blockbuster ad. (See above.) CBS News ad. Promo for Prince and the halftime show. Translation: Pleeeeezzzzzzz don't change the channel yet.

Oh, right, football. Bears go three and out. Punt. Another commercial break. Sierra Mist, Jim Gaffigan, the guy from "Ed" and a beard comb-over. Semi-funny. Salesgenie.com ad. Another Sierra Mist ad with Gaffigan and the guy from "Ed." (Michael Ian Black.) All right, I'm tired of them.

More football. The rain is bad enough for Nantz to call it "intensified." Data: Peyton's thumb, Bears' takeaways. 3rd down pass for a touchdown. No coverage on the receiver at all. Muffed extra point. Wait for it, wait for it ...

Aw, I was sure somebody would say, "This could come back to haunt the Colts."

Another truck ad. "The first moon office" for FedEx. Nice effects, so-so script. Bud Light with an auctioneer. So far, nothing that's going to be worth extended discussion tomorrow.

Kickoff. Fumble! Colts recover. Good replay of the hit. (But I'm watching in HD. Everything looks good.) Another fumble! The Bears get it back. This is exciting, but not exactly great execution. The wet is clearly a problem. Aren't they supposed to pick Super Bowl locations where the weather isn't an issue?

Another long gain for Chicago. Eventual touchdown.

Snickers commercial. "Do something manly." Not bad. Schick Quattro. "Pride." "Survivor" revisiting "memorable moments" -- but no "snake and the rat."

Kickoff, then more commercials. Chevrolet sing-alongs. Not bad. Another Bud Light ad -- English school. Grammys contest promo. Letterman with Oprah. All right, I laughed.

Game goes on. I just realized that someone could make a nice piece of change selling those old Motorman's Friends before the Super Bowl. After all, you don't want to go to the bathroom during the game, and you don't want to go during the commercials either.

Another fumble. Colts recover. They don't capitalize. Deep punt. Recap by CBS: "Big hits." Simms notes "so many turnovers." Nantz provides the number. Bear injured. Action stops. Resumes. I wish I had stronger feelings about one of these teams.

We pause now for a press release that just landed in my e-mail, concerning the Oprah-Letterman spot:

Dave and Oprah – in love?
Well, not exactly – but show business titans David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey did team up to shoot a special surprise LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN promo that was broadcast during CBS Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl XLI, Sunday, Feb. 4.

The one-time-only spot, which ran during the highly-rated first quarter of the big game, was secretly taped Wednesday, Jan. 24 at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

In the promotional spot, Indianapolis native Letterman, wearing a Colts jersey, and Chicago resident Winfrey, donning a Bears jersey, sit snuggled together on a couch watching the game. Letterman, while eating a mouthful of food, says to her, “You want the Bears and I want the Colts, but we both win because we’re in love.” Winfrey then turns to him and says, “Honey, don’t talk with your mouth full,” with Letterman responding, “Oh, sorry.”

This marks Letterman and Winfrey’s first appearance together since her highly-rated visit to the LATE SHOW on Dec. 1, 2005. That broadcast, which marked Winfrey’s first visit with Letterman in 16 years, was viewed by 13.45 million viewers, making it the fourth most watched episode of the LATE SHOW ever.

End first quarter. GoDaddy.com ad. Interruption at home for a phone call. Back to the game in time for a Colts field goal. CBS points people to a Web site to re-see their favorite ads. Am wondering if the Letterman-Oprah spot will break its "one time only" vow for that. Doesn't matter, since it'll be all over the Internet soon enough.

Human lemmings for CareerBuilder.com. More Doritos. Chevy car ad challenge winner. Very good. Another shot of rain. More promos. More rain shots. Simms and Nantz banter about the rain. Fog on a camera lens. Colts driving. In the movie version of "Semi-Tough," there's a point where Burt Reynolds declares something like, "I choose to win this bleeping game." Manning against New England had that vibe -- "I choose not to lose to bleeping New England." And right now he's got something similar going. Colts take the lead.

More ads. Another Prince promo. Kickoff. More commercials. GM "All By Myself" robot. Coca-Cola celebrates Black History Month. Back to the game, but all I'm thinking about is 5:29 to halftime. Prince was one of the high points of "American Idol's" finale last year, so I'm hoping for something good here.

Down to 2 minutes. More stuff. Another turnover, Bears, then another turnover, Colts' ball. Has no one in this game ever played in the rain before? Ad at the 39-second mark notes game's significance in African-American history. Time-out at 2 seconds, another commercial. Coca-Cola inspires old guy to adventure. Coca-Cola inspires me to have trouble sleeping. Game, another time-out, ad for "Rules of Engagement." (I've seen a couple of episodes. Not inspiring.) Ad for Grissom's return to "CSI." Game: Field goal attempt by Colts, missed. HALFTIME.

Promos: "Two and a Half Men." "CSI." "Shark." "March Madness" (nice touch with the bubble teams). Actual commercial -- Panasonic Toughbook. Cleveland State. What seems like the 900th promo for Channel 19's "Are the Cleveland Browns for sale?" story.

Studio guys. Boomer is holding the ball better than the teams in the game. He's also not in the rain.

Halftime show. Lights, fireworks and "We Will Rock You." Prince. "Let's Go Crazy." Stage shaped like his insignia. Do-rag on his head. Usual playing-field crowd of enthusiasts who never seem genuine. Prince in good form. "1999" riff -- marching band enters -- ... and "Proud Mary!" The man knows how to surprise. "All Along the Watchtower," slowed down and ominous. I am in awe, and he's not done yet. Prince proceeds to remind us that even if he wasn't a great singer and songwriter, he would be famous as a killer guitarist.

He's soaked and thoroughly confident. And, of course for these conditions, "Purple Rain." This may well be the greatest SB halftime show I have ever seen. Could we just bag the second half and get another 90 minutes of Prince?

Commercials and promos, including for "Jericho." I've seen the Feb. 21 flashback episode and am absolutely ready for its return -- more than for "Lost," and I've also seen its return episode, too. "Jericho" continues to be comfortable both making sense and explaining a great deal about what's going on, while "Lost" is still dancing with us three seasons in.

Oh, more football. And a discussion of a player who wants to marry Oprah. Sorry, pal, looks like Letterman got there ahead of you. More rain on a lens. CBS sure wasn't ready for this weather. The game just feels like a slog. Indianapolis field goal, lead goes to 19-14.

Commercials. "Meet the Robinsons," not even opening until March 30. E*Trade. Another Coca-Cola spot, lots of effects. Am trying to figure out on what planet this guy gets a bottle of Coke with a coin.

Kickoff. Bud Light ad. Revlon with Sheryl Crow. "Not Fade Away," eh? Promo says "Wild Hogs" is "the comedy event of the spring." Based on a trailer we saw at the movies awhile back, it's on the bride's viewing list.

Grossman gets sacked twice on poor ball-handling. This was supposed to be part of his road to redemption. Bad weather was supposed to favor the Bears. CareerBuilder.com ad -- think the Bears are wishing they could change careers? Taco Bell ad with talking lions gets big giggles from the bride. "Give me an ad with a talking animal, and I'm putty," she says.

Colts are just knocking around the Bears now. Chicago defense has to be sucking wind. Facemask call, too. Colts have to settle for another field goal -- only the Bears smack the kicker. Colts take the field-goal points.

Robert Goulet commercial for Emerald nuts. Dwyane Wade and Charles Barkley for T-Mobile -- good "is this your dad?" line, although I don't think Charles would have taken it well in a situation where he wasn't getting paid to hear it.

Kickoff, good position for Bears thanks to Colts penalty. Commercial: FedEx. And ... the K-Fed "Life comes at you fast" ad. (Do you think FedEx likes being back to back with K-Fed?) It was funnier when Hammer did it -- and this one makes us listen to too much of Federline's rapping. Bud Light ad with the man with the ax; funnier than K-Fed.

Bears manage a field goal, 22-17. CBS shows a crew member going splashdown. More football, end third quarter.

Katie promo. Pro Bowl promo. The Masters promo. (It's in April.) University of Akron ad. ... Crabs worshipping Budweiser. Prudential plays with rocks. "Burning Love" and a Honda. So far, my favorite ad is still Dave and Oprah. The bride votes for the talking lions for Taco Bell. Young son picks Budweiser and the ax-man. (CBS Sportsline's commercial roundup has both of their faves, along with a bunch more.)

Bears drive, intercepted, Colt runs it back for a touchdown. I thought at first that he stepped out. Chicago challenges. Replay seems to show that he's inbounds. Challenge rejected. Colts lead 29-17.

Good looking ad for HP, but still not all that interesting overall. I wonder if my blah feelings about the game are making the ads feel blah, too. Then again, how many great ads can you get in a single year? ... Bud ad with Shula and Jay-Z at least has a decent closing line.

Colts intercept Bears again. 9:55 to go and it doesn't feel like a real game anymore. Hey, how about playing Prince's halftime show again?

Officials include "first step of brothers to work a Super Bowl," says Nantz. Indication of how little they've got to say about this snoozer, too.

"Hannibal Rising" ad. CareerBuilder. "Criminal Minds" promo. More football. 5:16 in the game. According to my DVR, the game coverage is supposed to end at 10, followed right away by "Criminal Minds." Seasoned viewers know such schedules lie. Remember the flap last year when "Grey's Anatomy" was delayed much later than the schedule said -- frustrating countless early-to-bed, DVR-trusting viewers?

Since the Colts have the ball with 5 minutes left, let's talk about last night's "Saturday Night Live." Checked out the opening "American Idol" parody. Some decent ideas (including the dog "family" waiting outside the audition room) but not a dazzler. Jumped then to the digital short. I admired the invocation of the cheesecake "exercise" shows from the '80s, but it wasn't strong enough to make me want to watch again. Definitely not in league with the "box" song and "Lazy Sunday." Anything in the show worthy my going into the recording for?

Two-minute warning. GoDaddy again. Snapple Green Tea. Good unhappy-fans ad (to "St. James Infirmary") for the NFL. "CSI: Miami" promo. ... Back to football, and it's time for the plaudits for Tony Dungy. Deserves them, too. Clock rolls, Bears have no timeouts ... Dungy gets the bucket. Game over. MVP? I'd give it to somebody on the Colts defense. Can't give it to the weather.

Another commercial break. Post-game show. Who's the MVP? Chatter. Who's the MVP? Chatter. Who's the MVP? Another commercial break -- lots of reruns of ads. ... Presentation of the Lombardi trophy, with Shula. He'd better not play Jay-Z for that thing.

Oh, no! A moving van has pulled up, stolen the trophy and taken it to another city!

Sorry, just couldn't end the evening without reminding people how Indianapolis got the freakin' Colts. Especially now that Irsay is talking God so much.

Manning gets the MVP. That's like one of those career-achievement Oscars -- not for this game, but for everything he did to get there.

It's 10:18. And with a wish that you didn't trust your DVR to get "Criminal Minds" at 10, I bid you good night.
