ABC announces its summer schedule with the premiere of eight original series, including the return of “The Bachelorette” on Monday, May 19 (9:00-11:00 p.m.), following the performance show finale of “Dancing with the Stars”; “The Mole” on Monday, May 26 (10:00-11:00 p.m.); “Wipeout” on Tuesday, June 24 (8:00-9:00 p.m.); “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” on Tuesday, June 24 (9:00-10:00 p.m.); ABC News’ “Hopkins” on Thursday, June 26 (10:00-11:00 p.m.); “Dance Machine” on Friday, June 27 (8:00-9:00 p.m.); “High School Musical: Summer Session” on Sunday, July 20 (8:00-9:00 p.m.); and “Wanna Bet” on Monday, July 21 (9:00-10:00 p.m.).

THE BACHELORETTE – SPECIAL TWO-HOUR PREMIERE MONDAY, MAY 19 (9:00-11:00 p.m.) – Millions of viewers watched DeAnna Pappas, 26, suffer through a painful, last-minute rejection by Brad Womack on the last season of “The Bachelor” — earning her the sympathy of women everywhere. Now DeAnna will have the last laugh as the tables are turned and she gets to choose from among 25 bachelors in her own bid for true love, when “The Bachelorette” returns to the ABC lineup. This is the fourth edition of the female version of ABC’s popular romance reality series. The brunette, brown-eyed real estate agent from Neunan, Georgia, became an immediate fan favorite and was the final woman remaining on the finale of “The Bachelor” in November. The ending proved to be a huge shocker though, when Womack didn’t select any woman – a first in “Bachelor” history.

“The Bachelorette” will regularly air Monday nights from 8:00-10:00 p.m.

Hosted by Chris Harrison, “The Bachelorette” is produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television. Mike Fleiss, Martin Hilton and David Bohnert are the executive producers.

THE MOLE – PREMIERES MONDAY, MAY 26 (10:00-11:00 p.m.) – “The Mole” returns with all-new missions, locations and music, plus online and mobile interactivity, enabling more viewer participation during the 10 episodes. Jon Kelley (“Extra,” “The National Sports Report,” “Baseball Today”) is host. “The Mole” follows a group of 12 players as they try to figure out who among them is The Mole, a saboteur trying to keep them from winning money. Players must decide who they think The Mole is and then learn as much about him or her as they can, because, at the end of each one-hour episode, the player who knows the least about The Mole is immediately eliminated from the game. In the final dramatic episode, The Mole is revealed and one of two final players wins a substantial cash prize.

The highly-rated unscripted series has aired in various time periods during its four-season run, and was a consistent draw with key young adult viewers opposite established network competition, including NBC’s “Law & Order” and the inaugural season of Fox’s “American Idol.” Scott A. Stone and Clay Newbill are executive producers for Stone & Company Entertainment.

WIPEOUT – PREMIERES TUESDAY, JUNE 24 (8:00-9:00 p.m.) – Twenty-four contenders compete on an extreme obstacle course designed to provide the most crashes, face plants, impacts and wipe outs ever seen on television. During each one-hour episode, one competitor will win the title of Wipeout champion and $50,000. “Wipe Out” is hosted by John Anderson (ESPN’s “SportsCenter”). Jill Wagner is co-host.

“Wipeout” is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Matt Kunitz. Scott Larsen is co-executive producer.

I SURVIVED A JAPANESE GAME SHOW – PREMIERES TUESDAY, JUNE 24 (9:00-10:00 p.m.) – This unscripted reality/game show takes an eye-opening, behind-the-scenes look at 10 Americans who are whisked away to Japan and compete in the ultimate Japanese game show. The results and prizing will be based on who best adapts to Japanese culture and the challenges in each episode.

The executive producers are Arthur Smith and Kent Weed of A. Smith & Co. (“The Swan,” “Kitchen Nightmares”), David Sidebotham, Karsten Bartholin and Tim Crescenti, from a concept by Babyfoot APS Denmark/Small World IFT.

ABC NEWS’ HOPKINS – PREMIERES THURSDAY, JUNE 26 (10:00-11:00 p.m.) — Nearly eight years after the critically acclaimed series, “Hopkins 24/7,” ABC News returns to Baltimore’s John Hopkins Hospital for a new documentary series entitled “Hopkins.” This six-part program will take viewers inside the legendary hospital to meet patients in the throes of medical crises and young doctors forced to make life and death decisions on the fly, while struggling to keep their personal relationships from unraveling. Shot in high definition with unparalleled access for over four months, “Hopkins” offers an intimate portrait of the men and women who call this hospital home.

DANCE MACHINE – PREMIERES FRIDAY, JUNE 27 (8:00-9:00 p.m.) — Each episode features six real people from all walks of life who will face off against each other in a series of one-on-one dance-offs to the most popular songs of all time. Imagine a 70-year-old grandmother in a dance-off with a 25-year-old gravedigger to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Throughout the night contestants will be eliminated by voters in the studio audience. By the end of the evening, just two finalists will be left to challenge each other for the honor of being crowned that night’s “Dance Machine” – and to take home the $100,000 cash prize. Popular E! News correspondent Jason Kennedy is host.

The show is from RDF USA. Greg Goldman, executive vice president of Development and Current for RDF USA, is creator and executive producer of the show. Chris Coelen of RDF, as well as Brian A. Veskosky of Metro Entertainment, are executive producers.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: SUMMER SESSION – PREMIERES SUNDAY, JULY 20 (8:00-9:00 p.m.) — The multi-episode competition reality series will hold unique nationwide casting sessions that will appear in the show, with plenty of surprises from global sensation “Disney’s High School Musical.” This much-anticipated series brings the phenomenally successful “High School Musical” experience to life. The casting scouts welcome anyone and everyone ages 16-22 who has dreamed of being center stage — the high school quarterback who’s never tried out for a play but has a song in his heart, the drama club extrovert looking to break into the big time, someone looking to trade the chess club routine for a dance routine — all are invited to “Get’cha head in the game,” as the hit song says! The finalists will ultimately participate in a summer music program to hone their skills. After eliminations, the winner will be given the opportunity of a lifetime, but details of the grand prize are still under wraps.

The series premieres on Sunday, July 20, and will air Sunday and Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. for three weeks, and then continue on Mondays at 8:00 p.m. through the end of the summer.

“High School Musical: Summer Session” is executive-produced by Jay Blumenfeld and Tony Marsh (both of “Here Come the Newlyweds”) of “The Jay and Tony Show.” Hosts and judges will be announced at a later date.

Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” has been seen by over 250 million viewers and the sequel, “High School Musical 2,” has been seen by over 195 million viewers in 24 languages around the world. The movies spawned stage productions at schools and in professional theatres around the world, multi-platinum CDs, DVDs and books, a successful consumer products franchise at mass retailers, a themed show at Disneyland Parks in Anaheim, Orlando and Paris, a sold-out 42 date arena concert tour in North America and Latin America and a popular touring ice show around the world.

WANNA BET – PREMIERES MONDAY, JULY 21 (9:00-10:00 p.m.) — British comedy sensations Ant and Dec host this one-hour weekly primetime event. Four celebrity contestants/judges have the chance to earn big money for the charity of their choice by betting on the success or failure of some of the wildest stunts, tricks and mental challenges that average Americans dream up and perform in front of a studio audience. Celebrity contestants include Drew Lachey, Sherri Shepherd, Bill Engvall and Scott Hamilton.

“Wanna Bet” is executive-produced by Philip Gurin (“The Singing Bee,” “Weakest Link”) and Mark Jansen (“The Weakest Link”).

Official announcement here:

Spanish language versions of songs from "High School Musical 2" performed by popular recording artists from Mexico and Spain will be presented as part of Hispanic Heritage Month programming for kids and families, beginning SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 on Disney Channel. The music videos, as seen on Disney Channel Spain and Disney Channels throughout Latin America, will be presented throughout the Disney Channel U.S. programming schedule.

For preschool age viewers, Spanish language versions of songs from hit series
including "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" ("La Casa de Mickey Mouse") and "My Friends
Tigger and Pooh" ("Mis Amigos Tigger y Pooh") will air as interstitials
throughout the month, and two new themed episodes of the popular series "Handy
Manny" and "Johnny and the Sprites" will be presented SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15.

In addition, Spanish language versions of main title theme songs from global hit
series including "Cory in the House" ("Cory en La Casa Blanca") and "The Suite
Life of Zack & Cody" ("Zack y Cody: Gemelos en Acción") will air as
interstitials through October 15.

Introducing the music videos is 15-year-old Mexican-American actress Selena
Gomez of "Wizards of Waverly Place," a comedy series set in a bilingual
Manhattan household, home to a family of five — including three teens who
happen to be budding wizards. The series premieres FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12 as part of
Hispanic Heritage Month programming highlights.

The "High School Musical 2" songs are performed by: Mexico's Paulina Holguin,
who is joined by Roger Gonzalez for their rendition of "You are the Music in Me"
("Eres La Musica en Mí"), the upbeat song that tells the story of how music
brought Troy and Gabriella together. Their Spanish language music video is
interspersed with scenes from the Disney Channel Original Movie.

Spain's recording artists Mota (Manuel Martos and Álvaro de Azcárate) perform
their version of the song "Eres La Musica en Mí" in the same rockin' style as
the movie's one and only Sharpay. Mota's Spanish music video is also intercut
with scenes from "High School Musical 2."

Mexico's Paulina Holguin is again featured in a music video of "Gotta Go My Own
Way" ("Por Mi Camino Iré"), a love song that marks Gabriella's turning point in
the movie, one where she accepts that the summer plans she and Troy made won't
be working out.

Mota also performs their cover of "All for One" in a music video that features
original choreography filmed in Spain and scenes from the movie's closing
anthem.

OK, but what's the Spanish for "Don't be photographed naked"?

The Fall 2007 issue of Teen magazine hit newsstands on Sept. 4 but just landed on my desk today. The cover story is about Vanessa Hudgens ("her first-ever solo magazine cover," says a press release) with the cover line, "A girl's gotta have her secrets."

But how's this for an eerily prescient beginning to a story:

Imagine you're hanging otu with your boyfriend, laughing, having fun and doing totally couple-y things. Now picture yourself waking up a week later to find photos of this seemingly normal day plastered all over the Internet and tabloids. Your privacy has been completely invaded. Of course, it wouldn't occur to the average teenager to think a photographer was following her every move, which is why the public pics were such a shock to Vanessa, even despite her success with "High School Musical." But there they were. …
"It's still weird to me," she admits. "It's weird to think people would take pictures of you as you're eating or doing something random."

Imagine how weird is is NOW. But here's one more unintentionally ironic comment from the article:

"I want to let my fans get to know a little about me," she says. "I'm very thankful for everything they've done for me so, of course, I'm going to let them into my world a little bit. But I really am a very private person, and I love keeping my life to myself."

After the jump, Barry Corbin, and the perils of magazine deadlines … and a new part 2, with "Damages," "Mad Men," "Rescue Me" (so beware of spoilers if you haven't caught up)…

Barry Corbin finally appear as Brenda's father on "The Closer," and what fun it was. He is such a solid actor, able to play the comedy and drama in a character, sometimes within the same scene. He can, as he did on "The Closer," intimidate another character (in this case, Fritz), then make it a joke — and still make you remember the intimidation even as he is smiling. All that, and him playing off both Kyra Sedgwick and Frances Sternhagen. TV heaven, dropped in a sturdy episode. (The elevator scene!)

Talking to some of the "Closer" fans around my office, though, reminded me of the varieties of viewing habits. They were surprised to see Corbin's bald head, since they remembered him in the main from "Northern Exposure," where he had hair. But I;m sure there are other viewers — like my bride – who think of him the way he looked on "The Closer," because it is close to the way he looks on "One Tree Hill."

I made a magazine run last night, mainly to check on the Allure and OK! pieces about Britney Spears. (This is, after all, part of my pop culture mandate.) And while doing so, I began thinking about an item for tomorrow's HeldenFiles, probably to be called "Fun at the Newsstand."

And what was that fun? Well, there was Lindsay Lohan on the cover of the September issue of Elle, with the quote "I'm glad I went to rehab." But, as the magazine notes in the article, it's from an interview done just before her Memorial Day disaster, and the ensuing trip to rehab (which are at least described in the text with the interview) — and therefore well before her most recent troubles and her current reported stint in a Utah facility.

Then there's the Summer 2007 issue of In Style Weddings. Jennifer Morrison of "House" on the cover. Lovey-dovey pictures inside of Morrison and co-star/fiance Jesse Spencer. Description of wedding plans, discussion of The Dress.

They called off the engagement this week.

Part 2: I've been doing some catchup this weekend, for the past week's "Damages," "Rescue Me" and "Mad Men." I also have a couple of upcoming "Mad Men" I may get so, although our Viewing Of The Day is the forthcoming DVD of "Heroes."

I'm still watching "Damages" because I keep expecting it to get better. And every now and then there's something I like a great deal, like the look on Ted Danson's face when he talks about the cost of shipping a grenade. But I still think it's mainly implausible melodrama, and a clunky one at that. The time shifts from the present day (post killing) to the past (case in progress) and even to the deeper past (Florida) are just distracting; once the killing was established in the first episode, it should have settled for a more linear narrative from the case to the present day. The everybody's-got-secrets subtext is overworked, too, mainly because the secrets so far just aren't that interesting. But Glenn Close is growing on me, her behavioral tics seeming more understandable — at least, if we accept the idea that she is crazy as a bedbug. "Damages" has come one of those big potboiler novels that I'm determined to finish, even if doing so isn't all that enjoyable.

"Mad Men," in contrast, is just plain terrific. It also involves a world full of secrets, in particular those of Don Draper (the superb Jon Hamm), who has changed his name and abandoned his old life — including, we now know, an adoring younger brother. The story of Don and his wife Betty (January Jones) by itself is enough to carry a pretty good show, but the weaving in of other characters and stories remains strong. And unlike "Damages," where I feel as if I'm constantly having to fit someone new into the fabric, "Mad Men" does not overburden us in a given week by trying to tell too many stories.

Then there's "Rescue Me." For a moment this week, it had me — in the scene where Tommy is sitting on the rooftop and talking about what it means to bury your child. coming after we've gotten to the depth of Mike the ex-probie's pain. There was also the sheer amusement of the looks on Lou and Franco when they finally see what the new chief has been rumored to have. But I'm still not feeling that great old "Rescue Me" vibe. The intervention scene never quite worked. The baby-kidnapping — or was it a baby-un-kidnapping? — felt fake. The Gina Gershon scene, pointless. More and more this seems like one of those shows that had a season or two of greatness and now just can't figure out how to quit.

I've already posted some thoughts about "Superbad," and I'll have a full review in Friday's Beacon Journal that I'll link here later. Today I watched "HSM 2," also for a review in Friday's paper to be linked later. Two movies about high-school kids premiering on the same day. Nice timing.

I had looked forward to both projects. I'm a fan of producer Judd Apatow and writer-actor Seth Rogen, both so key to "Superbad." And I liked the original "High School Musical." Seriously. I've seen it more than once. Seriously. But, at the end of the day, I liked "Superbad" a lot more than "HSM 2," and I am already bracing for reader complaints.

"Superbad" is, after all, a very R-rated comedy full of raw language, sexual posturing and at least one bit I couldn't begin to describe here.

(I won't describe it in part because this blog is rated G, according to this gizmo, although that rating may change if I ever get around to a post I've been pondering about love and sex in modern entertainment. Or just because I used the word "sex." Or if I say "Looky Ploot,"* the title of a 1950 song currently stuck in my head, which the ratings gizmo may not know what to do with.)

So there's "Superbad" on the one hand. And on the other we have "HSM 2," which is all sparkly and clean and family-oriented and hand-holding and building up suspense about — brace yourself — a kiss. A reader could look at the two reviews and go, oh, this guy hates family fare and likes bad stuff — even though there's no either/or here. You can like one, the other or both, and will have plenty of chances to see each.

And what can I do? I watched both and had my opinions. You can't start massaging your opinions out of fear of readers' reactions. There's no end to that slope once you start sliding. And if I want readers to trust me — even that form of trust that involves reading me enough that you know you will disagree with anything I say — then all I can do is say what I think.

Still, I wish I had liked "HSM 2" a little more. (Let the record show I didn't hate it. But I didn't think it was as good as the first movie.) I understand the people who long for good family viewing, and want to know when it comes along. I just didn't think this movie was all that good. And while I wouldn't remotely recommend "Superbad" to all those kids who have parties planned around "HSM 2" on Friday night, it made me laugh a lot.

*By Emmitt Slay and His Slayriders, included on the CD "More Mellow Cats 'N' Kittens: Hot R&B and Cool Blues 1946-1952.

"High School Musical 2," the sequel to the Emmy Award-winning Disney Channel Original Movie for kids, tweens and families, will premiere FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) in a weekend of programming events hosted by the cast on Disney Channel U.S. The movie goes global on Disney Channels around in the world beginning in September. The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, President, Entertainment, Disney Channel Worldwide.

Beginning May 4, an interactive online game enables users to gradually unlock the "High School Musical 2" poster at DisneyChannel.com/HighSchoolMusical2. On May 18, the full poster will be available for printing.

For the new movie, Marsh reassembled the entire creative team that made "High School Musical" a worldwide sensation. Emmy Award-winning Kenny Ortega returns to direct and, along with fellow Emmy Award-winning choreographers Charles Klapow and Bonnie Story, has created ground-breaking production numbers for the sequel. The story and screenplay was written by former rock music journalist Peter Barsocchini based on the characters he created for the original movie. A Humanitas Prize finalist, Barsocchini wrote the original movie and its sequel with his tween daughter in mind and drew inspiration for the characters and the storyline from his own childhood.

The world-class songwriters who wrote anthemic songs (spanning pop, rock, hip hop, swing and a flashy Hawaiian/Polynesian number) for the sequel are: Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil, Jamie Houston, Tim James, Antonina Armato, Randy Petersen, Kevin Quinn, David Lawrence and Faye Greenberg. Lawrence also composed the score for the movie.

Reprising their singing and dancing roles are bona fide superstars in the kid and tween universe: Zac Efron as star athlete Troy Bolton, Vanessa Hudgens as brainy transfer student Gabriella Montez, Ashley Tisdale as drama club diva Sharpay Evans, Lucas Grabeel as drama club idol Ryan Evans, Corbin Bleu as teammate and best friend Chad Danforth and Monique Coleman as academic decathlete Taylor McKessie. Also returning are Alyson Reed ("A Chorus Line") as Ms. Darbus, Chris Warren, Jr. as Zeke, Olesya Rulin as Kelsi, KayCee Stroh as Martha, Ryne Sanborn as Jason and Bart Johnson as Coach Bolton. Mark Taylor (Disney Channel's "Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off") joins the cast as the country club manager, Mr. Fulton.

In the sequel, school's out for summer, and the East High Wildcats are ready to kick back and make it the time of their lives. If they can land decent summer jobs, all will be right with the world. Troy Bolton can barely believe his luck when he's offered a job at Albuquerque's posh country club, Lava Springs. What he doesn't know is that his newfound employment is part of club queen Sharpay's plot to lure him away from Gabriella. But that plan begins to unravel when Troy, unbeknownst to Sharpay, lands a lifeguard position at the club for Gabriella, as well as jobs for Chad, Taylor, Zeke, Martha, Kelsi, Jason and the rest of his Wildcat pals.

When she learns Kelsi has written what's sure to be a winning duet for Troy and Gabriella to perform at the club's annual Midsummer Night's Talent Show, an incensed Sharpay begins an all-out campaign to ensure these newcomers will not upstage her – forcing her to relive her humiliation over the school's winter musical.

Thus begins a duel of wits between the determined Sharpay, who seeks to always get what she wants, and Troy, who begins to experience a world of privilege he's never known. What will he be willing to sacrifice for the sake of his future? All questions are answered, musically, of course, on the night of the club's Talent Show.

Emmy Award winners Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush ("High School Musical") are the executive producers. Emmy Award-winning Don Schain ("High School Musical") is the producer. Filmed on location in Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah, "High School Musical 2" is from First Street Films and Salty Pictures.
