"American Idol" Results

by Rich Heldenfels on March 26, 2009

The bride returned from a business trip tonight. Went out for dinner together, didn't rush home and I wasn't about to waste even 40 minutes going through all the build-up to the last five minutes of "Idol." But I did check those closing minutes, which were kind of funny. …

Not because of the guy who was eliminated. Because of the desperate effort to wrap up the show on time, with Seacrest pushing things along, and the "judges save" decision delayed so Paula could shake her groove thing and Kara could sing along as Sarver gave his last please-save-me performance. Also funny, because his song was "Ain't Too Proud To Beg."

Nor did it ever seem likely that the four judges would unanimously agree to save him, so I don't know what the hangup was — other than it appeared Paula was making some determined plea for another chance to shake her groove thing to the sounds of Sarver, and Kara appeared to say that he had gotten better. Still shouldn't have been enough.

Yes, he wasn't the worst last night. That honor goes to Megan Joy, whose windup-doll approach to music seems to satisfy some of the audience. But it was amazing to see the show trying to get off the air, and the judges dawdling until Simon finally told Sarver he was definitely, positively, absolutely going home.

I'll check out the rest of the show later. Any particular craziness other than the end?

I took the same route, and if I were Michael, I would've said, "look, I know who you would use this on, and I'm not one of them, so lets not waste the time, get to my little clip reel and call it a day." It's almost insulting, right?

No "almost" about it. And, as I said in my performance post, I think he did himself in when he said he was happy to be top 10. Because then voters will say, "Bye" the way Powers Boothe said it in "Tombstone."

I find it 100% asinine that American Idol hardly ever finishes on time. They have time for endless amount of horrendous filler, commercial breaks, in-show commercials for Ford, but they can't fit in the actual important bits, like the elimination?

I knew Sarver was toast, but if I'd been at all hopeful I would have had to google it the next day, because my DVR cut off before the judges gave their final decisions. And I actually like the goodbye clip reels, so this was hugely annoying!
