Turner Classic Movies' annual "31 Days of Oscar" fest takes an academic tilt in '09. Announcement and schedule after the jump. …
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) hoping to learn all those things they never got around to studying in school can have their chance in February, when the network’s 31 DAYS OF OSCAR takes viewers to TCM University. The annual festival, which boasts hundreds of Academy Award-winning and nominated films, will become the ultimate classroom, with each day devoted to a different academic field, from economics and biology to music appreciation and world history.
Robert Osborne, TCM host, official biographer of the Academy Awards® and the Academy’s red carpet greeter, will serve as professor throughout the month, presenting more than 350 movies to educate viewers in 93 different courses. Highlights include classes in mass media (1951’s Ace in the Hole and 1979’s The China Syndrome); reproductive biology (1944’s The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek and 1966’s Georgy Girl); nuclear physics (1950’s Seven Days to Noon and 1963’s Dr. Strangelove); the reach and influence of Nazi Germany (1942’s Casablanca and 1943’s Sahara); 20th century British authors (1959’s Room at the Top and 1991’s Enchanted April); military law (1937’s The Life of Emile Zola and 1954’s The Caine Mutiny); speech and language development (1938’s Pygmalion and 1964’s My Fair Lady); acting (1937’s Stage Door and 1993’s The Dresser); and farm planning and management (1941’s The Devil and Daniel Webster and 1955’s East of Eden). A complete schedule is attached.
“Each year, we look forward to coming up with a unique way to present our unrivaled and ever-expanding collection of Oscar-caliber films,” said Charlie Tabesh, senior vice president of programming for TCM. “The 15th edition of 31 DAYS OF OSCAR proves that movies can do so much more than just entertain. They can provide keen insights on the world around us, inform us about great events of the past, help us get into the minds of historical figures and introduce us to compelling ideas.”
More than 25 titles will make their first appearance on TCM during 31 DAYS OF OSCAR, including Mike Nichols’ Carnal Knowledge (Feb. 5); the colorful musical Li’l Abner (Feb. 6); the gritty urban drama Boyz N the Hood (Feb. 8); Lawrence Olivier’s stunning adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III (Feb. 10); the passionate drama Room at the Top (Feb. 10); the delightful romance Enchanted April (Feb. 10); Alec Guinness’ hilarious comedy The Horse’s Mouth (Feb. 15); Louis Malle’s controversial Pretty Baby (Feb. 15); Barry Levinson’s Bugsy (Feb. 16); adaptations of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (Feb. 19), Stephen Vincent Benet’s The Devil and Daniel Webster (Feb. 23) and John Steinbeck’s East of Eden (Feb. 23); Kon Ichikawa’s anti-war classic The Burmese Harp (Feb. 24); and Jim Sheridan’s heart-wrenching My Left Foot (Feb. 25).
The 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony airs Sunday, Feb. 22, at 8 p.m. (ET)/ 5 p.m. (PT) on ABC.
