The comedian and former star of "The Bernie Mac Show" has died. I had seen the reports that he was fighting pneumonia but did not expect it to end up this way. Big shock.
His TV show in its early years — especially when Larry Wilmore was involved — was very funny and edgy. The pilot alone gave me several phrases that stuck in my head — "the big-ass donut," the "don't touch" riff about his record collection, the jaw-droppingly vivid threat of punishment. Liked his standup, too. His appearances in movies like "Transformer" and the "Ocean's" films weren't heavy lifting, but he made me smile. I'll miss him.
