I wound down tonight by watching the national spelling bee, and it was a pleasure. The winner: Sameer Mishra, below.

The Indiana student was an appealing and experienced competitor, fending off a challenge from a kid who was in his first spelling bee. He also provided the evening's best entertainment, when asked to spell the word "numnah." To him, and to me, it sounded at first as if the task was to spell "numb nut." Fortunately, not.

I was shocked when they asked the kid to spell "McManamon," and he got it right.
