The show is rigged, somehow. My Husband, daughter and I figured it out several weeks ago that American Idol would choose D.C. because they wanted to sponsor a rock singer.
There were many times Cook should have left because of his performance. It's all about ratings and sellability of records and promoting next year's show.
Did anyone catch the Ford commercial about 20 minutes before the "big announcement" that congratulated David Cook for winning American Idol?! I thought I was dreaming, but then he WON! I have some Tivo'ers looking it over to comfirm my find

I checked the commercial on my recording, and it said "Ford congratulates David Archuleta and David Cook."
