I wonder if it's a broader question of passion -- that people really really really want to keep Archuleta or D Cook or even, at this point, KL Cook, but not enough felt excited about MJ. The same thing could be happening with Smithson as well; she was a major contender early but she's just not getting voters excited. Every single one of the girls deserved to be sent home prior to Michael, even though he hasn't "wowed" me with anything for a long while. I think his age and screaming vocals worked against him.
