New "American Idol" Podcast

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Includes my heartfelt plea for no more Heart covers, and Malcolm on "God Bless the USA." Also, a reminder that "Every Breath You Take" is a stalker song, which led to an office discussion of a "stalker week" on "American Idol." I may have a longer post about that later. But for now, enjoy the podcast.

Rory Block, from her website

I have finally caught "Jericho" and hope to have a few words about that later. And I am sorting through my memories of Abby Mann, the writer for movies and TV, who has died.

But I've also got a lot of music stuck in my head. Bonnie Bramlett's version of "If I Were Your Woman" (which I mentioned during Tuesday's "American Idol" post) and her "Two Steps From the Blues," a duet with Gregg Allman. Gnarls Barkley's "Run." U2's "Sweetest Thing." Joe Cocker's "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress." Heart's "Alone" and "These Dreams," which in their vocal glory should be warning "Idol" contestants to just forget those attempts to cover them. They can't be matched.

And, perhaps more than anything else, Rory Block's "God's Gift to Women," backing by the Persuasions. You can find out more about her here. I saw her in a theater in Schenectady a few million years ago, as the opening act for Sandra Bernhard, and haven't forgotten. "God's Gift" is a fine, funny song about a woman who'd rather "have a plain looking man who'll love me like he should." Block sings it with the Persuasions. Find it.
