"American Idol": I Am Not Made of Stone

by Rich Heldenfels on February 5, 2008

in American Idol

A few notes about tonight's show, after the jump …

When we do our video podcasts, Malcolm X Abram and I have fun being snarky about "Idol." And there is usually plenty to snark about. But I have to admit that the emotional stories of contestants can occasionally get to me, and there was one like that tonight.
I am talking about Asia'h Epperson, 18, of Joplin, Mo., the young woman whose father had died a couple of days before her audition — and who in his honor sang "How Do I Live Without You?" She was a trouper, she could sing and, well, it was probably the first big goosebumps moment I've had during the auditions.

And I would rather hear her a million times than watch more of the pageant singer or the deliberately obnoxious guy who kept trying to bait Simon. No need to give them the extra publicity by mentioning their names here.

Singers I also liked: Alexandrea Lushinton, 16, of Douglasville, Ga., with the odd outfit and "My Funny Valentine"; Amanda Overmyer, 22, of Mulberry, Ind., biker nurse with "Mean Woman/Traveling Band." Wasn't all that impressed by the kid living in his car.

Yeah – I was teary eyed twice last night. At the end, when the young man living in his car was walking in, my roommate said "I hope they don't jerk us around and he's horrible." It was sweet that Simon offered his shoulder-in-smedium shirt to Paula after Epperson's audition.
