Emmy Noms

Posted July 19th, 2007 by Rich Heldenfels

List is here I expect to have more to say later, including about "Friday Night Lights" getting shafted … and what may be my happiest nomination of the day — for the Andy Samberg/Justin Timberlake "box" song on "Saturday Night Live," in the "outstanding original music and lyrics" category… Tell you what: Since I've been posting more notes in the comments below, comment on what you like/dislike in the nominations and I'll try to respond … if I ever get over the "FNL" oversights that is. CONNIE BRITTON! CONNIE BRITTON!

No Lost? No FNL? No Matt Fox or 'Juliette'? Yet, 2.5 Men & Boston Legal get multi-nods? Emmys have become completely irrelevant. So out of touch. For years it was just head-scratching insanity, now it's just pathetic and laughable. Those who actually *watch* TV know where the quality is, even if those blind voters don't.

"Lost" has six nominations, including for directing and two for supporting actor (Locke and Ben), so it could have done worse. "FNL" got two, one for directing and another I haven't found yet. I like "2 1/2 Men" but might have gone with Cryer instead of Sheen for lead actor. (Cryer obviously prefers to enter supporting actor, where he's nominated. And the Emmys call you what you decide you are — hence Alec Baldwin being in lead comedy actor, when I have put him in supporting, as good as he is.)
"Boston Legal's" Emmy love I have never understood. … As for watching TV, as has been pointed out, the Emmy process is not designed to encourage voters to watch entire seasons…

I'm just happy for the Emmy love that is being shown for 30 Rock, though I would've liked it even better had either Paul Reubens or Conan O'Brien been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor.

I was also happy to see Ricky Gervais and Rainn Wilson get nominated in their categories. I guess Supporting Actor nominations for either Stephen Merchant or Shaun ("Barry from EastEnders") Williamson might've been a bit too over the heads of the committee, though.

No argument that there are things to be happy about, including the "30 Rock" nods. But so many omissions. I've noted in previous posts my fondness for what "How I Met Your Mother" did this year in writing, and would have liked to see it get a nomination. Looks like "Gilmore Girls" was shut out, again, and I think there was something there worth nominating — especially in a universe that found a way to nominateo "According to Jim" and "The Class" … And let me say it once again: Connie Britton…

Nice to see a few nominations for HIMYM and 30 Rock. I'm guessing lack of competition in the musical categories, but I was surprised to see the number of nominations for the musical episode of Scrubs.

With the "box" song nominated, they can do anything else they want in the music category. I am beyond content.
And I suppose it's an indication that I've moved on, or I would have noticed sooner that "Veronica Mars" got donut for nominations.

I saw "Smallville" with a nod for something. "Smallville" is good and deserves more nods for emmys.
