Of course I'm a contrarian but in a fictional situation like a TV show I'm not sure it matters whether she was raped in the end or not.

The show puts that idea in front of viewers, while highlighting Helgenberger's beauty, which seems distasteful, prurient and unnecessary.

To me, it's not so different from the episode when one member of the team was buried alive. My wife says it is different.

She was drugged and kidnapped, and later dealt with her daughter's kidnapping -- all of which is pretty horrible. But Thursday's episode -- which I double-checked today -- made clear that she had not actually been raped.

Did they also have to rape Helgenberger's character? My wife calls it the "Hunter Syndrome," wherein crime shows with female leads resort to raping, torturing or otherwise humiliating the female lead after a certain point in the show's development.

She explained her theory to me during the season premiere of Criminal Intent, as the woman detective was swinging from the meat hook, and then mentioned it again with this show.

I think the writers get lazy, she says it's something else.
