In the UK the BBC don't show adverts and the plot tends to flow quite steadily. The commercial stations on the other hand tend to script in the adverts so they fall in a natural break. I'm not sure if "Life on Mars" is out on DVD yet in the UK, but if you get the chance to watch it "uncut" then do so, I'm sure you'll find it well worth the experience.
