OPT produced programs -- big miniseries based on things like John Jakes's novels --for independent stations wanting new programming and network affiliates wanting an alternative to Big Three fare. It was around in the '70s and '80s. I remember the shows as mainly being melodramatic (which made for exciting promos) and not very good.

I appreciate the support. And, as I said in the ''My Own Private Press Tour'' posting, I would have liked to have gone. But, as I also said, c'est la vie.

Tour, junket...I don't get caught up in the semantics. It's all the same to me. All I know is that all the critics seem to enjoy themselves when they're out there, and most of the critics send back very interesting reports from the tour. It always seems to be very entertaining and makes for good reading. I guess my point is you should have been there, too.

The press tour -- which is not a junket -- ended on Sunday, Alan, with the critics traveling home on Monday. One of my colleagues complained today about the CW announcement coming so closely on the heels of the other event. In addition, the announcement of The CW was made in New York, while the press tour was in California.

Arguably the biggest TV announcement in awhile, and your paper won't even comp you for your plane ticket, hotel and expenses. Knight Ridder's other critics are in California, I can't imagine it is a coincidence this announcement comes as the press junket is in full swing.

Does the Beacon Journal dock you if any paper clips come up missing?
