Bankrupting America: Real Or Fake ?

by Da King on August 15, 2010

in economics,federal spending,Uncategorized,White House administration

The Bankrupting America website has a fun new man-on-the-street video. The participants are asked if pork-barrel spending in the Obama stimulus package is real or fake. As ludicrous as so much of the stimulus spending is, it's very hard to tell real spending from fake spending. Let's play – Real Or Fake ?:

Sure, some radical wingnut conservatives will undoubtedly object to $2.6 million taxpayer dollars being spent to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly, but that's because they're racists. All reasonable and compassionate people know that drunken Chinese prostitutes contribute to the problem of, um,…..drunken Chinese prostitution. I didn't know that was a problem requiring a massive influx of taxpayer cash, but then again, I didn't go to Harvard.

I bet PETA loves that new underground walkway for turtles, though I do wonder how the tutrles will know to use it. Maybe one of those cool American Recovery And Reinvestment Act signs with the Obama logo will point the way. I assume the sign will be written in both English and Spanish, in order to accomodate Latino turtles. And there darn well better be a ramp for disabled turtles.

Bankrupting America also has a state-by-state breakdown of how the stimulus package is working. Here's the data for Ohio:

As part of a nationwide “recovery summer” tour, President Obama’s Administration will hold events throughout the country to discuss the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (aka the “stimulus”) and Washington’s plan for the road ahead. Below are some facts
to consider about Ohio:

Ohio’s share of the $862-billion “stimulus” bill received: $2,486,051,071
(=2.9% of the $85.6 billion that has been received by states).

Ohio’s share of the population = 3.8%

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 9.1% when the “stimulus” was enacted in February 2009; today it is 10.5%.

Ohio’s 10.5% unemployment rate is higher than the national average of 9.5%.

Ohio lost 131,500 jobs between February 2009 when the “stimulus” was enacted and June 2010.

For FY2011, Ohio is on track to overspend by $3 billion. (Last updated: 7/15/2010)

Ohio’s number of foreclosed homes was 11,321 when the “stimulus” was enacted; today that number has fallen to 10,639.

Questionable “stimulus” spending:
- $34 million will be going to Ohio’s John Weld Peck Federal Building in Cincinnati, which is only 46 years old, for a “window makeover.”

No word yet on whether the John Weld Peck Federal Building will house Chinese prostitutes, turtles, or both.

Here are a few more examples of stimulus waste:

*Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida used $15,551 in stimulus money to pay two researchers to study how alcohol affects a mouse’s motor functions. [Oh, great. Next we'll have to train mice how to drink responsibly].

*The U.S. government handed over a staggering $54 million in “stimulus cash” to Connecticut’s politically-connected Mohegan Indian tribe, which runs one of the highest grossing casinos in the country. [Too bad they didn't teach Chinese prostitutes to gamble responsibly]

*Syracuse professor of psychology Michael Carey received $219,000 in federal stimulus money for a study that examines the sex patterns of college women. [Newsflash - women want sex more when they drink irresponsibly]

*$1.15 million in stimulus funds was allocated for the installation of a new guard rail around the non-existent Optima Lake in Oklahoma. [Maybe we'll put a lake there in Stimulus II]

*Researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo received $389,000 to pay 100 residents of Buffalo $45 each to record how much malt liquor they drink and how much pot they smoke each day. Instead of spending nearly $400,000, the U.S. government could have achieved the same goal by having a couple of scientists join a fraternity. [Is it just me, or is our government obsessed with drinking ?]

*$100,000 in federal stimulus funds were used for a martini bar and a brazilian steakhouse. [See ? Told you so]

*A dinner cruise company in Chicago got nearly $1 million in stimulus funds to combat terrorism. [Al Qaeda's new 'Dinner And A Detonator' plot is thwarted]

*$233,000 in stimulus money went to the University of California at San Diego to study why Africans vote. [um, is it because THEY CAN ? I thought we settled this issue long ago]

*The Cactus Bug Project at the University Of Florida was allocated $325,394 in stimulus funds to study the mating decisions of cactus bugs. According to the project proposal, one of the questions that will be answered by the study is this: ”Whether males with large weapons are more or less attractive to females.” [I'm not going to touch this one]

*One Denver developer received $13 million in tax credits to construct a senior housing complex despite that fact that the same developer is being sued as a slumlord for running rodent-infested apartment buildings in the city of San Francisco. [I was wondering what happened to Tony Rezko]

*Sheltering Arms Senior Services was awarded a contract worth $22.3 million in stimulus money to weatherize homes for poor families in Houston, Texas – but a new report from Texas Watchdog says that the weatherization work was performed so badly that 33 of the 53 homes will need to be completely redone. [yes, but 20 of them DON'T have to be redone, so there. Plus, these are good union jobs being created, and recreated. This must be the doubling effect I hear so much about]

*A liberal theater in Minnesota named ”In the Heart of the Beast” (in reference to a well known quote by communist radical Che Guevara) received $100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows. [there's nothing worse than a socially unconscious puppet]

*California’s inspector general found that $1 million in stimulus funds for a program to give summer jobs to young people was improperly used for overhead expenses such as rent and utility bills. [but the rent and utility bill payments created or saved 100,000 jobs !!!]

*Landon Cox, a Duke University assistant professor of computer science, was awarded $498,000 in stimulus money to study Facebook. [hasn't this professor heard of google ? Facebook isn't exactly a secret]

*The town of Union, New York is being urged to spend $578,000 in stimulus money that it did not request for a homelessness problem that it claims it does not have. [this sounds like a pre-emptive move to counterract the longer term effects of Obama's policies to me]

Yes, the U.S. government sure knows how to waste money.

And the truth is that there is simply no way that the U.S. government would have been able to accumulate a debt of over $13 trillion dollars (and growing exponentially) without being incredibly skilled at wasting money.

In fact, the Pentagon says that there are literally trillions of dollars that it cannot account for.

Now how in the world do you lose track of trillions of dollars?

That takes some major league incompetence.

No organization other than the federal government could lose track of a trillion dollars. Yeah, these are the people we want running health care. NOT.

Change We Can Believe In.

  • The Irreverend

I think we need to spend just a few more dollars to airbrush the Obama logo on the turtle shells to complete the effort. I hate it when we only do things halfway. I have also heard that the tortoises have filed a class action suit claiming discrimination.

  • walter

maybe you should get your friend that makes $100,000 (and $35,000 in college tuition) under the table to do it.

    idiot

  • walter

let me apologize for calling you an idiot

I don't want to lower myself to your level

  • Da King

Maybe the other animals should organize, so those connected turtles don't get all the money
    :-)

I'm surprised you didn't link to where all the started

but then a true republican propagandist never reveals his true sources…

look who else is linking to the Bankrupting America blog……..none other the head republican tea partier John Boehner

Wally, here's your Word of the Day for Sunday, 8/15/2010:

    sat·ire
       /ˈsætaɪər/ [sat-ahyuhr]

    –noun

the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

Try to focus boy. I know it's tough for you but we'll continue to work with you in the hope that someday they can get your meds balanced properly.

  • 2012

Walter is living proof that you can't fix stupid!!! Educated idiot!!!

  • larry d.

Yes, walt. Republicans have been criticizing wasteful stimulus spending. That's why they are about to win a bunch of seats in congress this fall. Was that your point?

  • walter

    "Try to focus boy."

nice touch…..for a racist like yourself

  • walter

just pointing out how a republican propagandist like Dave gets his republican propagandist talking points from the leader of the republican tea party John Boehner

I would have thought that was pretty obvious. Guess not.

this from Pepper Construction……Pepper Construction Group is proud to announce the award of a $20 million renovation project for the U.S. General Services Administration at the John Weld Peck Federal Building in Cincinnati, Ohio. The renovation will consist of window replacement, mechanical and electrical system upgrades, ADA improvements and a new roof and davit system.

Dave and his fellow republican propagandists have it as $34,000,000 for a window makeover. Somebody's numbers don't add up

  • Da King

If you followed the links I provided, they told you where the report on the stimulus funding came from. Nice try wally, but you're just being dishonest again, as usual.

  • Da King

Why should the U.S. government be loaning out taxpayer dollars to casinos ????

  • Da King

    What's your point ?

  • Da King

    Again, what's your point ?

  • walter

    another e-mail?

  • Da King

    Ah, finally, a point.

I used the numbers provided at the Bankrupt America website. After doing a bit of checking, I found Nancy Pelosi agrees with the $34 million figure.

    http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/reports?id=0370

I guess Pelosi is a Republican propagandist too.

  • walter

just pointing out how a republican tea party propagandist like yourself won't directly link to other republican tea party propagandists like Tom Coburn, John McCain and republicn ped0phile protecter John Boehner.

don't get me wrong….I understand why republican tea party propagandists don't link to other republican tea party propagandists…..it would be bad form

  • walter

this from Pelosi's website…."Workers quietly began work this week on the region's largest stimulus project – a $34 million update of the John Weld Peck Federal Building in downtown Cincinnati.

It's the first visible indication of work on the stimulus-funded effort to overhaul the 46-year-old federal building over the next two and a half years."

this from Pepper Construction……"Pepper Construction Group is proud to announce the award of a $20 million renovation project for the U.S. General Services Administration at the John Weld Peck Federal Building in Cincinnati, Ohio. The renovation will consist of window replacement, mechanical and electrical system upgrades, ADA improvements and a new roof and davit system."

where's the part about the $34,000,000 for a window makeover?

  • The Irreverend

    Wallee…

You obviously didn't learn the word of the day. Sometimes the best revenge is to troll the troll….

  • walter

a racist like you calling me boy is satire?

that's kinda like a homophobe like sunkl calling me a faggot is satire

I wonder why Dave didn't claim satire when he defended his homophobic buddy sunkl?

  • walter

from the Tulsa Beacon….." The tribe originally intended to fund the entire project from casino profits, but was prevented from doing so when revenues declined. Lynn Malerba, tribal council chair, defended the $54 million stimulus loan saying, “The community center is central to who we are as a people.”

  • Da King

Now you're conceding the $34 million figure is accurate, but saying there's more than just windows involved. Fine with me.

  • walter

thanks for conceding that contrary to the Bankrupt America website, the $34 million figure is for more than just a window makeover and that Bankrupt America is just repeating the false republican tea party propaganda

    thanks again

  • The Irreverend

Wallie's Word of the Day for Monday, August 16, 2010:

    de·lu·sion·al \-ˈlüzh-nəl, -ˈlü-zhə-nəl\ adjective

synonyms delusion, illusion, hallucination, mirage mean something that is believed to be true or real but that is actually false or unreal. delusion implies an inability to distinguish between what is real and what only seems to be real, often as the result of a disordered state of mind

The following can indicate a delusion:

    1. The patient expresses an idea or belief with unusual persistence or force.

    2. That idea appears to exert an undue influence on his or her life, and the way of life is often altered to an inexplicable extent.

3.Despite his/her profound conviction, there is often a quality of secretiveness or suspicion when the patient is questioned about it.

    4. The individual tends to be humorless and oversensitive, especially about the belief.

    5. There is a quality of centrality: no matter how unlikely it is that these strange things are happening to him, the patient accepts them relatively unquestioningly.

    6. An attempt to contradict the belief is likely to arouse an inappropriately strong emotional reaction, often with irritability and hostility.

    7. The belief is, at the least, unlikely, and out of keeping with the patient's social, cultural and religious background.

    8. The patient is emotionally over-invested in the idea and it overwhelms other elements of his or her psyche.

    9. The delusion, if acted out, often leads to behaviors which are abnormal and/or out of character, although perhaps understandable in the light of the delusional beliefs.

    10. Individuals who know the patient will observe that his or her belief and behavior are uncharacteristic and alien.

You are 10 for 10 dude. Get some help!

  • walter

so let me get this straight…..you use the racist term boy and that makes me delusional

just when I thought that I've heard it all……

  • walter

from Dave's story…….."In fact, the Pentagon says that there are literally trillions of dollars that it cannot account for.

Now how in the world do you lose track of trillions of dollars?

That takes some major league incompetence."

I would think that if the military can turn a blind eye to the murders of thousands of innocent Iraqi and Afgan civilians then stealing trillions of Americans taxpayers dollars would be considered childs play

shorter republican tea party propaganda……..no problem with American service personel engaging in the murder, torture and abuse of innocent Arabs……but stealing, now that's got to stop

    is that about right?

  • Da King

"the false republican tea party propaganda."

You do make me laugh, wally-world. You are proven wrong on the $20 billion figure, and you use it as proof you were correct. What color is the sky in wally-world ?

  • Da King

Almost nothing you say is "about right."

  • walter

actually, Pepper was awarded the $20 mil for the renovation of window replacement, mechanical and electrical system upgrades, ADA improvements and a new roof and davit system."

the other 13.9 mil was awarded to Pepper for Phase 2

    https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=4c0611b4ceaabdd618960632af70c0a2&tab=core&_cview=1

  • walter

so the stealing doesn't have to stop?

well, I guess if murdering innocent civilians doesn't have to stop why should the stealing from the American taxpayer have to stop

    just sayin'

  • walter

"You are proven wrong on the $20 billion figure…."

    huh?

  • Da King

There's something seriously wrong with you. Now you're making up your own arguments and arguing with yourself.

  • walter

so I guess I'm right……republican tea party propagandists believe that murdering innocent civilians doesn't have to stop but the stealing from the American taxpayer does

    just sayin'

  • Da King

    Still arguing with yourself.

  • walter

how'd that $34 million for a window makeover work out for you?

  • Da King

It made me out to be right, and you to be wrong. Thanks for asking.

  • walter

that's just what I mean Dave…….being honest is just NOT in your makeup

  • CJ

Most of this seems to be peanuts compared to what really got the country into its current situation, a 7 trillion dollar unjustified war and the billions of dollars used to bail out the real ruling class of America. Yeah, some of this spending looks absurd but 15,000 is only .000015 of just 1 billion let alone hundreds of billions and trillions. So, again, curbing some of this silly spending would not help much to fix what the government practices of the past 10 years have gotten us into.

  • larry d.

The stimulus cost $800 billion, and it will be over a trillion after interest on all the borrowed money. That's not peanuts. Your $7 trillion number is La La Land. Unjustified or not, the Iraq War has cost us less than the stimulus and has provided far more jobs so far.

"Senate Probe: US Base Guards Tied to Taliban
Pentagon Exercising No Oversight Over Contractors
by Jason Ditz, October 07, 2010

A Senate investigation has expressed serious concern about the Pentagon’s hiring of private Afghan contractors to guard US military bases in Afghanistan, noting that they had next to no information about who was being hired and exercised no oversight over them.

But matters only got worse, as the probe found that in many cases the warlords in charge of providing large numbers of the guards were Taliban agents, and some of the people provided had Taliban ties."

the Pentagon creating jobs for the Taliban…….that's kinda special

    Support the Troops?
    No way!
by Justin Raimondo, October 08, 2010

Winfield says the whole platoon knew about what was going on with the "thrill killers," and the same can be said about the entire country when it comes to atrocities being committed in Iraq and Afghanistan by US troops, and I don’t just mean Abu Ghraib. This grisly record is common knowledge, and, in deciding to join up, the prospective US soldier is consciously choosing to ignore or downplay the moral aspects of being asked to commit atrocities: it’s much more important to him (or her) to make a living.

This is the definition of a moral monster.

There was a time, not so long ago, when the decision to seek a career in the military did not involve becoming such a monster. That time has long since passed. To put on an American uniform today is to become complicit in a criminal enterprise, and this characterization is not by any means limited to the thrill-killer platoon but to the entire killing machine deployed to carry out Washington’s grand design."

ignoring and downplaying atrocities for the sake of job creation……yeah, that's the ticket

Bankrupting America….or staeling from the American taxpayer?

"Soldier gets 21 months for lying about money
By ADRIAN SAINZ Associated Press Writer Published: Friday, October 8, 2010 at 5:23 p.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, October 8, 2010 at 5:23 p.m.
    ( page of 2 )

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A U.S. Army officer who approved supplies contracts in Iraq was sentenced Friday to 21 months in prison for lying about contents of a package he sent to the United States containing more than $100,000.

Maj. Charles E. Sublett pleaded guilty in July to sending almost $108,000 in sequentially numbered $100 bills and more than 17 million Iraqi dinar, then worth about $11,600, from Balad, Iraq, to his wife in Killeen, Texas. Customs officials in Memphis intercepted the FedEx package in January 2005.

He was indicted in January this year. In return for his guilty plea, the government agreed to dismiss a bulk cash smuggling charge. He was never charged with stealing the money."

he was never charged with stealing the money…….why would he be…..he's a member of the worlds largest criminal enterprise…..the U.S. Military
