Climategate: This Is Not Science

by Da King on November 28, 2009

in global warming,Uncategorized

My biggest problem with the advocates of anthropogenic (man-made) global warming has always been their obvious closed-mindedness, which is utterly inconsistent with the principles of science. The "warmers" won't engage in debate. They demonize global warming agnostics and questioners as "flat-earthers." They question the motives of dissenters. They ignore any data that isn't consistent with their beliefs, which makes those beliefs appear predetermined. These characteristics of the warmers make them appear almost like cult members, driven by ideology. I can understand this from a political standpoint, because politics is often little more than thuggery. I can't, however, accept this type of behavior from a scientific standpoint. Science is supposed to be the pursuit of truth, not the pursuit of an agenda. Science is not fixed and unquestioned. It doesn't have an end. It is an ongoing endeavor.

Wikipedia explains the scientific method as follows:

The Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.[1] A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.[2]

When existing scientific hypotheses are disproven, as the IPCC hockey stick graph has been disproven, then explanations or alternate hypotheses are called for. More scientific inquiry is called for. What we have witnessed with the Climategate e-mails has been precisely the opposite of science. We have witnessed scientists acting like ideologically-driven thugs (aka, politicians). The e-mails reveal scientists rigging data and attempting to squelch dissenting opinions. At the center of the storm are two man-made global warming advocates, the climatologists Michael Mann of Penn State, and Phil Jones, director of the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit, from which the e-mails were lifted. The Wall Street Journal describes some of the e-mail communiques between these two scientists:

The real issue is what the [e-mail] messages say about the way the much-ballyhooed scientific consensus on global warming was arrived at, and how a single view of warming and its causes is being enforced. The impression left by the correspondence among Messrs. Mann and Jones and others is that the climate-tracking game has been rigged from the start.

According to this privileged group, only those whose work has been published in select scientific journals, after having gone through the "peer-review" process, can be relied on to critique the science. And sure enough, any challenges from critics outside this clique are dismissed and disparaged.

This September, Mr. Mann told a New York Times reporter in one of the leaked emails that: "Those such as [Stephen] McIntyre who operate almost entirely outside of this system are not to be trusted." Mr. McIntyre is a retired Canadian businessman who checks the findings of climate scientists and often publishes the mistakes he finds on his Web site, Climateaudit.org. He holds the rare distinction of having forced Mr. Mann to publish a correction to one of his more famous papers.

As anonymous reviewers of choice for certain journals, Mr. Mann & Co. had considerable power to enforce the consensus, but it was not absolute, as they discovered in 2003. Mr. Mann noted in a March 2003 email, after the journal "Climate Research" published a paper not to Mr. Mann's liking, that "This was the danger of always criticising the skeptics for not publishing in the 'peer-reviewed literature'. Obviously, they found a solution to that—take over a journal!"

Mr. Mann went on to suggest that the journal itself be blackballed: "Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal. We would also need to consider what we tell or request of our more reasonable colleagues who currently sit on the editorial board." In other words, keep dissent out of the respected journals. When that fails, redefine what constitutes a respected journal to exclude any that publish inconvenient views.

Notice the circular logic contained in the above e-mail exchanges. Mann and Jones only want peer-reviewed journals to be taken seriously regarding man-made global warming, but when a peer-reviewed journal publishes anything that the warmers don't like, the warmers move to exclude them as a peer-reviewed journal, thus closing off the dissent (and the science). This is not science.

Here's more reported by Robert Tracinski at RealClearPolitics:

You can also see from these e-mails the scientists' panic at any dissent appearing in the scientific literature. When another article by a skeptic was published in Geophysical Research Letters, Michael Mann complains, "It's one thing to lose Climate Research. We can't afford to lose GRL." Another CRU scientist, Tom Wigley, suggests that they target another troublesome editor: "If you think that Saiers is in the greenhouse skeptics camp, then, if we can find documentary evidence of this, we could go through official AGU channels to get him ousted." That's exactly what they did, and a later e-mail boasts that "The GRL leak may have been plugged up now w/new editorial leadership there."

Not content to block out all dissent from scientific journals, the CRU scientists also conspired to secure friendly reviewers who could be counted on to rubber-stamp their own work. Phil Jones suggests such a list to Kevin Trenberth, with the assurance that "All of them know the sorts of things to say…without any prompting."

I love the part where the warmers say they "can't afford to lose" another group of climate researchers. What can't they afford to lose ? Their grants, their big salaries, their perks, or what ?

There are a number of other e-mails indicating the deception of the warmers.

Here's one about hiding the fact that global temperatures have been DECLINING:

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.

Here's one that doubts global warming science:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.

Here's one about a global warming skeptic scientist:

Next time I see Pat Michaels at a scientific meeting, I’ll be tempted to beat the crap out of him. Very tempted.

Here's an attempt to hide the facts about the Medieval Warming Period:

Phil and I have recently submitted a paper using about a dozen NH records that fit this category, and many of which are available nearly 2K back–I think that trying to adopt a timeframe of 2K, rather than the usual 1K, addresses a good earlier point that Peck made w/ regard to the memo, that it would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “MWP”, even if we don’t yet have a hemispheric mean reconstruction available that far back….

More possible suppression of evidence:

Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? [the UN's Fourth Assessment Report]
Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis.
Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address.
We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.

This stuff is distrubing, to say the least. Perhaps all scientific credibility is not lost, however. Another climatologist at the East Anglia CRU, Mike Hulme, had this to say about the e-mails:

"This event might signal a crack that allows for processes of re-structuring scientific knowledge about climate change. It is possible that some areas of climate science has become sclerotic. It is possible that climate science has become too partisan, too centralized. The tribalism that some of the leaked emails display is something more usually associated with social organization within primitive cultures; it is not attractive when we find it at work inside science."

Amen to that.

King, good post. Thank God it is finally coming out that this is about the money and the special interests of one political party and their big money followers ie Goldman Sachs et al, scheming to make a profit off of the backs of the American people. Sad thing is their lemmings, the ones that believe this Democrat party is our fathers democrat, labor union middle class protecting party are color blind. It isn't, and it's leaders are passing legislation to benefit these gazillionaires like George Soros and "Blood and Gore". What has this administration or even the 2 previous done for the American worker? Sent jobs away? Extended the unemployment benefit? When the government takes over, it causes people to rely on them and kills their spirit. That's why when you see pictures of people in Cuba they have hallowed eyes. They have no purpose or drive unless they realize what the govt has done to them.
We have an opportunity to change our economy back to the union labor production days of yore with energy transformation. We do not need to do it by stealing money and jobs from Americans and their businesses. We do not need to create a false emergency or crisis. This is America, the greatest most inovative brilliant country on earth. We need to do it as our fathers did by letting the investors invest into the ideas of the entrepreneurs and letting the entrepreneurs get the people back to work at a living wage instead of the cut wages the Obama administration is promising.
Global warming or climate change is a lie. I believe the conspiracy of the movie 2012 is more likely to happen than what the govt and it's bribed scientists are proclaiming. These emails are proof of the scheme.

  • larry d.

A non-story. The faith-based hockey stickers know what's best and the numbers that are used to convince the masses are beside the point. Just like healthcare.

  • Da King

    joe,
That's why I'm so alarmed at the incredible expansion in government spending that has been going on for the last decade, which, if the Dems get their way, will venture to stratospheric new heights. It almost seems like these politicians are TRYING to destroy the country.

The Democratic party of our fathers is long gone. It died when JFK died, in my opinion. It's all about government control now.

  • Jeff

King, look up the Cloward Piven Strategy.

It is the template for communist revolution in the USA, and it is happening. And C AP and TRADE is a big part of the picture they need to collapse the system.

106 Trillion in unfunded debt. If the progressives could cease all the profits of the fortune 500 companies, it would take 140 yrs to pay todays 12 trillion debt, and that alone doubles in 10 yrs. You can not kill the golden goose, and expect to still get the eggs. Somehow liberalism did not learn that simple lession.

Check out TRVTH on facebook, for more absolute truth.

  • Da King

    Jeff,
I'll have to check out TRVTH, but I am familiar with the Cloward Piven Strategy to flood the welfare rolls and collapse the system, in the hopes that it will bring about revolutionary Marxist change. We are well on our way to accomplishing that, and Prez Barry seems to embrace many Cloward Piven principles, including, to quote Cloward Piven – "a massive drive to recruit the poor onto the welfare rolls" (ObamaCare, Cap-And-Trade), "cadres of aggressive organizers" (ACORN, SEIU), "a federal program of income redistribution" (redistribution of wealth), "crisis strategy" ("never let a crisis go to waste," as Rahmbo said). C-P called for a "profound financial and political crisis" to effect this change, and Prez Barry speaks of the "fundamental transformation of America," and throws the word "catastrophic" around pretty often to describe what will happen if his policies aren't implemented. Pretty eery stuff. I may have to devote an entire post to this subject. Thanks for bringing it up.

And weren't both Cloward and Piven Columbia University professors, the very same institution that Prez Barry attended ??? What a coincidence.

  • roysoldboy

This off subject, but what nationality did President Barry enroll in Columbia as? We aren't allowed to know that but we know that he got in with the far left crowd at Columbia and that he went to Pakistan for a year after graduation without an American passport. Oh wait, we don't know he didn't have an American passport since those records are also locked away.

Yes, he may well met those two professors at Columbia but he met Alinsky later than that and it is the Alinsky influence that has influenced so much of what he has done the most. Now we all know that too many of his czars have been influenced with the Cloward and Piven and Alinsky teachings for him not to be influenced by his old teachers.

I communicate with TRVTH all the time at Gouverneur Times all the time and he does have some "out there" thoughts to go along with his really good ones. We are usually in agreement, but not always.

  • Tory Bug

I'm so confused about this global warming thing now, I seriously do not know what to think. I was pretty convinced it was real, but those conclusions obviously weren't based on good science. And if you throw out the work by all the people involved in this scandal, there isn't enough to say with any level of certainty what's correct.

Perhaps this global warming stuff will go the way of the great global cooling fright of the 70's. As for me and mine, I'll continue to treat this planet respectfully, conserving its resources. But I'll stop buying recycled toilet paper, lol.

  • Da King

    Roy,
We don't know much of anything about Obama's school years. Barack "Transparency" Obama has kept as much of his life locked away as humanly possible.

But I did hear he was going to release his original birth certificate, as soon as the ink dries :-)

  • Da King

    Tory,
I have an open mind about global warming, but when I see this kind of dishonest behavior from the warmers, it really makes me wonder what they are trying to hide. If they are right, what can they possibly have to fear that makes them engage in this type of behavior ?

  • Da King

Think about the environmentalist scare tactics.

In the 60's, it was DDT and the population bomb.
In the 70's, it was the new ice age.
In the 80's, it was the China Syndrome anti-nuke protests.
    Now, it's global warming.

  • The Reverend

So, I guess we're good to go then, right? Nothing should be done….no ice is melting, no sea levels are rising…..and scientists are all faith-based because they're commies…or something.

    All good stuff to know.

    Party on.

  • averagejoe5

How do we know if the ice is melting or if the sea levels are rising. 1 skewed result or false statement nullifies the whole project because there can be no faith in the results shown on paper. It make the opinions of the other 35,000 scientists just as valid if not more so than the Gore bribed scientists. Maybe Beck has been right all along. He seems to be more and more lately. It's like saying there is no God or Creator because he hasn't revealed himself to us. But if you take a real hard look at the details and the billions of precise systems it takes to make this universe work, how could there not be an ultimate creator. Both sides have their opinion, we'll never know who is correct until life ceases.

King, in your message to Tory. They are lying. That is why they did what they did and why they are trying to hide the facts. What has happened is their lies have caught up to them. This is all about the money, the power and the control. He who has large portions of these things rules the world. Who is more powerful and has greater control, a man with huge sums of cash or the man that creates and dispurses our energy sources. If you sell the public on a crisis and then bribe the govt to pass legislation to benefit your project the energy guy wins hands down.
Funny thing is no matter how much proof you have on any subject, the libs will always go down with the ship.

  • Da King

    Rev,
So, you have no problem with scientists lying to you ?

    Figures.

  • Jeff

He also has no problem with Liberal politicians lying to him either, his only problem is with the truth. The truth makes his pointy little head hurt, so he needs to put his aluminum foil hat back on.

  • Da King

    joe,
    Two words – global government.

  • Da King of Reason

So, it's not science. Fine. It's still happening. And you can deny that all you want, but it's too damn bad you won't be around in 200 years, when the really drastic effects will start to take place and you'll have to think of some other ridiculous explanation- will it be aliens manipulating our climate? The government trying to establish a dictatorial ownership of the people by ruining the world, thus forcing the people to submit to its outrageous demands? The fact that there is a black President, gay marriage is legal in several states, and a language other than English is being spoken prominently in America, The Land of the Free Unless You Are Not A Straight White Male?

It's time people realize: we're not "Going Green" to necessarily save the environment in the short term; we're worried about the future of the human race. And if that's too much for you to fathom (existence beyond my own lifetime?! PrePOSTerous!!), I suggest you do us all a big favor and go start a colony of idiots somewhere in the South (EDIT: expand the current colony of idiots everywhere in the South). You'll be free to drive gas-guzzlers and pollute all you want, and even procreate within your own family! And all the Illegal Aliens will be your slaves! That's the American Dream!

Meanwhile, the rest of us will be out making the world a better place for EVERYONE to live, not just attempting to make our own lifestyles a tidbit more comfortable.

  • Da King

Did that little irrational rant make you feel better ? I hope so.

Meanwhile, I'll keep looking at the science (or the lack thereof). Thanks.
