We are mostly sheep;just watch as our freedoms are eroded one by one. Soon only the news that the "STATE" considers worthy will cross the airwaves. Some in our country have dumbed down education and made many depending on the STATE for their very financial exsistence i.e. welfare programs,Social Security,Medicare and Medicaid. Now there is a push to get everyone depending on the STATE for the public healthcare option. Like sheep we follow with many not even researching any of these issues.Wake up and do your jpbs as informed citizens. Read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I believe there are many passionate people on both sides and what everyone needs to realize is that we live in a capitalist society. Both sides have equal access to the airwaves. It just so happens that the right listen to talk radio more than the left do. That is not the fault of the right and won't change if the media is controlled. The left would rather listen to music than keep up with the current issues. I know this is a generalization and is not true of everyone but you can see it in the ratings. There are liberal radio talk hosts out there but they don't get the following like the conservative talk show hosts do.

Look at it this way, if liberals started supporting and listening to their talk shows then things would change. The conservatives tend to keep things to themselves until things get so out of hand that they must speak up. They are then labeled an 'angry mob' by the left.

Our freedoms are precious and if we're not careful, they will be taken away from us. Once they are, it will be too late to react. Get informed and do your due diligence.

And Obama picked Biden. What's your point ?

I'm not optimistic either, because there will always be some dishonest power-hungry politician like Obama who will shoot public campaign financing down.

McCain picked Palin...and look where that got him.

We agree on public campaign financing. It's the only way to stop the American decline. I'm not optimistic.

frank,
The Republicans used to have more money. I don't think that's true now. The money follows the power, as you pointed out, and the Dems have the power.

I've come to believe in public campaign financing. Too bad Obama doesn't. He broke his pledge. McCain did believe in it, and look where it got him. Obama had an enormous money edge in '08.

Mr. averagejoe5,
Yes, I do think the Republicans have more money, and they have about a 25 year head start. The number of radio stations that broadcast conservative talk shows far outnumber the progressive ones. However, progressive shows I listen to don't want the Fairness Doctrine reinstated either. They seem to be confortable with the status quo.

I think that I understand the people the people you are talking about. I wouldn't characterize them as Libs. They're merely the boys who bought off the Democratic Party about 30 years ago. Nothing liberal about them. Republicans were drawing financially from the defense industry old money, and the Bible Belt. At the time, Republicans became pretty successful at raising money and winning elections. A group called the Democratic Leadership Council, led by Bill Clinton, decided that to compete, they would have to focus on raising money first and tend to their traditional constituency second if at all. The Reagan tax cuts had their intended effect of dumping a ton of money on Wall Street which fell into the hands whose ride on the speculative bubble gave them the hubris to think that they were somehow exempt financial common sense. These people weren't liberals, they weren't conservatives, they were Democrats and they were Republicans. There's one thing they have in common. To put it gently, they are investors who realize that the biggest return for their money comes from buying politicians on the cheap. Nothing will change until we remove money as the main source of electoral success, and the main predictor of a politician's vote.

Rev says, "However, I realize that extreme conservative capitalists believe that Americans should not have the right to hear both sides"

I really wonder what color the sky is in your world. Are you actually trying to tell me that the liberal side of the argument is NOT being heard in our country ? Obama in the White House. Democrats in control of Congress. The left having the advantage in tv, newspapers, Hollywood, and schools. I mean, you couldn't have made a more incorrect statement than the one above.

But yeah, the conservatives have those two or three radio stations. Ewwww, so scary.

frank this was your statement, maybe I misunderstood: "Don't worry. Your side has the money. Money always wins." Did you mean that the Republicans had the most money?
If so, that is not true. In fact it is the other way around. Many of the richest of the rich are Libs, million dollar bonus' are peanuts to these people. They are billionaires. They support liberal causes including lib politicians. This is why things will never change no matter how much talk in Washington.

Mr. averagejoe5,
I know about Soros, but would you let us know about the political activities of the others? The Rev is right about the fact that we as a country, own the airwaves. The right wing has successfully outbid anyone else for their use. I'd suggest you read some of Robert Parry's posts at Consortiumnews.com for how this came about.

The original purpose of the Fairness Doctrine was to prevent one side of a political issue from going unanswered. If the one side, as it is today, presents nothing but lies....call me crazy....but I would think that in a reverse situation, conservatives would want equal time to counter the lies.

That problem exists in spades on radio today. The zillions of lies from the crazy right have no airtime on public radio to counter them.

However, I realize that extreme conservative capitalists believe that Americans should not have the right to hear both sides,....but instead, to hear what they want to hear. You know, like shopping for breakfast cereal.

So...we have allowed profits to drive media....and now, we are only told what the corporate capitalists want us to hear.

Yeah, yeah, Americans have the right to choose....but when all there is to choose from is biased and propaganda filled....then what?

Rev, that was such a dumb comment.

Conservative radio is biased.
Liberal radio is biased.
Sports radio is biased.

Hell, even that Saturday morning radio show about fixing your house is biased towards home owners and do-it-yourselfers.

Where is the outcry there!!! Where is the social JUSTICE!!! Why isn't there an equal number of shows for lazy, apartment renters who depend on others to fix things for them?!!!

Oh wait... that's liberal radio...

Conservative radio is....at minimum....biased, though I contend conservative radio is little more than propaganda based on lies and distortions.

According to the comments here, it appears that conservatives do not want biased conservative radio, the airwaves on which they broadcast being owned by the people, to have any counterwight bias from the left to even existbe.

Some conservative thinking, that. According to conservatives the public airwaves are to be used exclusively for the purpose of spreading biased, and false, information.

At least conservatives are being up front about it.

Rev asks, "Does the government have any obligation at all to combat false, fraudulent disinformation and propaganda when it is taking place non-stop over airwaves that all Americans own?"

I love this question. It is so completely perverted. First is the presupposition that conservative talk radio is all lies, which is nothing but a reflection of the Rev's own political bias. Second is the notion that the government must combat the "lies," which is nothing but an advocation for government censorship of free speech, a demonstrably anti-american idea. Maybe the liberal stormtroopers can burn all those conservative books next, Rev.

As always, the liberal stormtroopers see nothing wrong in the media areas where liberals have the advantage (nearly all of them), only in the ONE area in which conservatives do. Sieg Heil, Rev.

I would ask Rev to answer an off topic question but he doesn't see how anything other than radio waves are involved at all in the services provided by Mark Lloyd.

Oh what the heck, Rev can you tell me how we really learn what is going on in DC without at least some right oriented newscasts? I will simplify this by asking how we keep up with the twists and turns of our present administration concerning so many things. Yesterday morning the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius said on tv that the public option wasn't the be all, end all that it had been. My morning paper reported that today but right after I read that the reporter on Fox News said that last night people higher up than she said that that part of the much discussed health insurance bill was back in its important position.

Rev, how do we know what they are doing? Lloyd has sounded the death knell for other than liberal talk radio. Whoops!!! Rev have you noticed the word that keeps popping up in that discussion. Diversity. Why that is even part of Lloyd's title. Well now, what happens if all the local radio stations in the nation that carry Rush Limbaugh have people of those diverse groups listed as the owners? Black or Hispanic people could easily be on boards of directors or at the head position. How would Lloyd deal with that? If I can see the use of diversity surely some sharp lawyers can take that a bit further.

It just gets better and better.

Joe, I don't think that the Rev would want to talk about the Dems wanting to make sure that we have a Dem majority in Congress in perpetuity, which is what I think they have in mind. There is no attempt here to balance what goes out on radio since they did try that with the Fairness Doctrine and they know it won't work any better now than it did then.

This attempt to destroy conservative talk radio is nothing but the desire to destroy those people so they can't tell the other side of political arguments. I am sure that few Dems really believe that Stu Smalley was disseminating nothing bur propaganda.

Rev, how do you know they are lies or disinformation that Rush or Beck or Sen Stu Smalley tell on the radio. Are they? or is that what you choose to believe because they don't match your perception of truth. What if right now the Dems actually do want to turn us into a communist country like they promised in the 60's? Not that I believe that, but let's just say for instance...

First, roy, King's post primarily concerned itself with radio.

The radio spectrum is owned by the public. That is not true of newspapers, cable teevee, or even education.

Since we own the radio spectrum....the government has every right to protect against lies, propaganda and disinformation on those radio stations. No one is suggesting that right wing radio should be eliminated.....just balanced with other stations that correct the right's errors.

Rev Red, there is a chance that when you punish a group for not broadcasting what local liberals want to hear by taxing those stations out of existence that there just could be some kind of conspiracy involved.

Lets hear you comment on the words of King talking the print media, faculties at most state universities, national television, Fox excepted, being left oriented. Do you really believe that he is wrong. I never can see why lefties like you can't see what is going on around you.

It is quite obvious to me why Mark Lloyd didn't think there needed to be another Fairness Doctrine since the first one didn't work as the left wanted it to work. With the insertion of this latest "control" of conservative talk radio I can see why he felt that way. If this thing gets past the Supreme Court, as my son said, there is no more freedom of expression if it doesn't agree with what progressives are thinking.

King, a great job of reporting this obviously long planned bit of liberal crap to us.
