Pelosi Lies About Waterboarding Knowledge

House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who was the ranking House Democrat on the Intelligence Committee in 2002-2003, when the enhanced interrogation techniques were used on high-level Al Qaeda detainees, says……she didn't know nuthin' 'bout no waterboardin'.

Bull. Crap.

From the New York Times:

As was common with the most secret programs, the C.I.A. chose not to brief the entire committees about the interrogation methods but only the so-called Gang of Four — the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate and House committees.

Nancy Pelosi was one of the Gang of Four. Here's what another of those Four, ranking Republican Porter Goss (R-FL), who would later become head of the CIA, said of those briefings:

“We were briefed, and we certainly understood what C.I.A. was doing,” Mr. Goss said in an interview. “Not only was there no objection, there was actually concern about whether the agency was doing enough.”

Goss' statement is corroborated. In September 2002, Nancy Pelosi was one of four who was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites, which included a description of the harsh interrogation techniques, including waterboarding. From a Washington Post article called 'Hill Briefed On Waterboarding In 2002':

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

"The briefer was specifically asked if the methods were tough enough," said a U.S. official who witnessed the exchange.

Yet long before "waterboarding" entered the public discourse, the CIA gave key legislative overseers about 30 private briefings, some of which included descriptions of that technique and other harsh interrogation methods, according to interviews with multiple U.S. officials with firsthand knowledge.
With one known exception, no formal objections were raised by the lawmakers briefed about the harsh methods during the two years in which waterboarding was employed, from 2002 to 2003, said Democrats and Republicans with direct knowledge of the matter. The lawmakers who held oversight roles during the period included Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Sens. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), as well as Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan).

Perhaps not many in Congress knew about the waterboarding technique being used, but Nancy Pelosi was certainly one who did. Now she is lying about it and insulting the intelligence of the American people.

We've seen this phony passion play before from top Democrats. Remember how so many Dems wailed about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction for years, throughout the 90's and again in 2002 when the Iraq war was being considered. Then later, when no wmd were found and the public opinion polls shifted against the war, the Democrats pretended that everything they said before didn't exist, that it was all due to "Bush's lies" (which were also "Clinton's lies," btw). Nancy Pelosi was one of the big liars about the wmd issue as well. It's deja vu all over again.

Pelosi lying?! Nooooo! Can't be true!

  • The Reverend

No question that Pelosi and other Democrats were briefed on this stuff.

However, there are a couple of issues to consider.

First, Pelosi said that she was never told that the techniques were actually being used. She said she was briefed on the list, but she wasn't told that those tactics were being implemented. Sounds like a stretch to me too, but she didn't say she didn't KNOW about the torture techniques.

Secondly, there's absolutely nothing that Pelosi could do about the information. She couldn't tell anyone because the stuff was classified. If she complained in the briefings, no one would ever hear about it, that's classified as well.

You'll get no disagreement from me that both sides have accountability issues. The Democrats knew that they didn't have the votes to do anything about any of the Bush crimes, and they were too spineless to act on principle, and even now, they're calling for no accountability or threats of prosecution of the Bush criminals. Still spineless.

  • larry d.

Wow, Reverend. You've just lost any credibility on this torture issue that you may have imagined you once had.

    "accountability issues"?

  • Tbomb

Well, waterboarding isn't torture anyway, right.

  • larry d.

Waterboarding is simply a clerical error, Tbomb. Just ask Reverend.

  • angry conserv

She did not LIE. Our representatives have arrived at the point that thay can say anything they chose because nothing is a lie if there are no consequences to any statements or actions. We scream vote them all out yet we keep voting for our specific clowns thus they have no reason to be truthful and honest.

  • The Reverend

larry…..I respect a mind that is unorthodox, mine trends that way as well, but excuse me, what the hell?

Congress has oversight obligations. When those oversight obligations are neglected, "accountability issues" present themselves. If Americans don't hold their representatives accountable, then the democracy ain't worth much.

But the "waterboarding is simply a clerical error" comment……I'm not getting. I could make a joke about it, however.

See, waterboarding could be wrong because of a clerical error….if no cleric was there to offer the last rites to the detainees. Somehow, I don't think that's what you were driving at, though.

  • larry d.

You should be screaming for Pelosi to be dragged away in shackles, Reverend. The torture could have never happened if she'd done her duty to her country.

    Instead, it's an 'accountability issue.'

  • Da King

Only the GOP is criminal, larry. Dems just make "mistakes in judgement."

    Panem,
There must be some political consultants somewhere that tell these politicians to point when they lie. I guess the idea is, if you lie forcefully enough, with emphasis, then the people will believe it.

  • The Reverend

"The torture could have never happened if she'd done her duty to her country."

The Bushies were torturing before any Committees heard anything about it. Pelosi didn't order torture. And she couldn't talk about it without going to prison. I guess that's what she should have done.

Some are to be held accountable for not blowing the whistle on the crimes…..some are to be held accountable for, you know, carrying out the crimes.

  • Da King

Since when did info being classified ever stop a Democrat from divulging it ? They always do it, and they NEVER go to prison for it. Name the last Dem charged with such a crime. They never even get charged. You never heard of the NY Times ? They're the Dems faves when it comes to divulging state secrets.

Maybe Pelosi could have at least objected if she had any, you know, objections. I think that's the whole point of Congressional briefings, and maybe Pelosi shouldn't be lying about it now. Just a thought.

  • Da King

And I think Bush and the CIA should get a medal for keeping America safe from foreign enemies of the state.

  • averagejoe5

She is a big liar, look at her eyes and the way she talks when asked a question.

  • Da King

Most of them are big liars, joe, and the higher up the Dem power chain they rise, the bigger the lies get. Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Hillary…the truth just gets in their way.
