In 2006, North Korea attempted a launch of a Taepodong-2 ballistic missile. The launch failed, with the missile blowing apart about 40 seconds after takeoff. In response to the North Korean launch, the United Nations issued Resolution 1718, which stated, "[We demand] that the DPRK [North Korea] not conduct any further nuclear test or launch of a ballistic missile." The North Koreans ignored the resolution, and launched another test of the Taepodong-2 ballistic missile last week. Rogue regimes like North Korea treat UN resolutions like the toothless requests that they usually are. Saddam Hussein ignored about 14 UN resolutions regarding WMD inspections in Iraq during the 1990's. Iran hasn't cared a whit about multiple UN resolutions calling for Iran to alter it's nuclear ambitions.
So, now that North Korea has proven it will ignore UN resolutions, guess what President Obama wants in response to the Korean missile test ??? He wants ANOTHER UN resolution, of course. Here's Obama on the missile test:
We will immediately consult with our allies in the region, including Japan and the Republic of Korea, and members of the U.N. Security Council to bring this matter before the Council.
I don't mean to single out only Obama here. Things were much the same under Bush and Clinton too. If countries like North Korea and Iran were responsive to the international community, they wouldn't be considered rogue regimes in the first place. NK and Iran didn't comprise two of the three countries in Bush's "axis of evil" for nothing (notably absent from the axis of evil now is IRAQ. I wonder what happened there ?)
President Obama called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in response to North Korea's launch. After a three hour closed door session, the Security Council announced…..nothing. They couldn't agree on a response. Obama is urging for a strong response to North Korea, whatever that means, but Russia, China, Libya, Uganda, and Vietnam all called for restraint by the UN (is the UN ever anything OTHER than restrained ?). These countries are saying a strong UN response will endanger the Six Party Talks (that North Korea is already ignoring). Russia even laughably claimed to be "studying" whether North Korea actually violated any UN resolutions, which NK so obviously did.
Ironically, the North Koreans launched their Taepodong-2 missile on the same day Obama called for "a world without nuclear weapons." While I applaud Obama's notions to reduce strategic nuclear weapons, stop their proliferation, and secure nuclear material around the world, there will NEVER be a world without nukes. That genie is out of the bottle. There's no going back. Obama was being naive in that respect. At this point, it is the dark threat of mutually assured destruction that keeps nuclear weapons from being used. If the major powers like the U.S., Russia, and China abandoned their nuclear weapons, it would actually increase the threat that rogue regimes and terrorist groups like Al Qaeda could pose to the world if they acquired nukes. The rest of the world would be defenseless.
Obama also reversed course on European missile defense, and is attempting to use it as a bargaining chip to get Iran to stop it's nuclear program. Here's Obama again:
"Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile activity poses a real threat, not just to the US, but to Iran's neighbours and our allies. The Czech Republic and Poland have been courageous in agreeing to host a defense against these missiles. As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward with a missile defense system."
I guess you could call this a kind of nuclear cap-and-trade policy, but to my way of thinking, this bargain should not be struck, even if Iran does agree to it. Iran isn't the only nuclear threat to Europe, not to mention that Iran cannot be trusted to keep their side of the bargain, any more than North Korea could be trusted to keep it's past pledges.

FYI – Don't forget to attend the Cleveland Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th. The event will take place from 4-6pm. The location has been moved from Public Square to Mall C. Nuclear weapons aren't the only thing proliferating. So is the government confiscation of our hard-earned money.

Appeasement II might be the proper name for Obama's performance last week. He talked so tough about North Korea and so tough about those nasty, arrogant Americans and won some points with residents of many European nations but I don't think he made any points with heads of state.
Maybe we should call his performance more of a Campaign Appearance II. It seemed he was campaigning for President of United European states. Does he know something about his longevity in the US.
All the talk by Obama about North Korea was nothing but talk. Doesn't the action of the Security Council tell this?
King I have a guy asking me when the US has to ask for permission to do anything. I wonder if he thinks that North Korea doesn't need to do those things. He won't answer since all he wants to do is portray the US as a bully nation and won't allow comparisons with others.
roy…
"Does he know something about his longevity in the US."
Obama may not, but I do….he'll be president until January 20, 2017.
And how do you KNOW that ? Did you call the Psychic Friends Network ?
There is only one couse of action that will end the insanity in N. Korea. The US should wiat untill Kim Jong Il calls for one of his frequent dog and pony shows when all of the elite are to attend and fire crusie missiles into the building, as well as otherother key structures and destroy their command and control ability and inform China that they will have to undertake a massive humitarian effort of their vassel state. No amount of bluster at the UN or negotiation will change the situation. For 60 years it has been a state run gulag in which the people have no rights, no future and whose is main concern is survival. For 60 years this has been the situation and it only gets worse as the rest of the world ignores the forgotten people of that country. Yes inncoent people will die but to let the concentraion camp contiune is a greater crime. I challenge anyone that believes there is no evil or aggression is never acceptable to do learn about the regime and the conditions of the forgotten people in that hell hole.
King , who you got in 2112 Sarah? Obama was being naive with respect to nuclear weapons? Who was more than willing to ignore N.Korea and Pakistan in his quest to make sure that Iraq didn't attack us with nuclear weapons they were not close to acquiring nor had the ability to deliver? The same guy who pulled troops and resources out of Afghanistan and launched the debacle against the cruel and evil dictator of Iraq whom his own father and the esteemed team of Ronny,Rummy and Dickhead had no problem with when he was actually pulling off the very war crimes that they later used as the rational to take him out!
make that 2012
Tbomb,
I don't have anybody in 2012. I don't believe in the Psychic Friends Network (but Miss Cleo told me it would be Al Franken).
I doubt it will be Palin.
Bush doesn't have anything to do with Obama's dream to get rid of all nuclear weapons, but thanks for the history lesson.
And Tbomb, I'm pretty sure Bush's father had a problem with Saddam Hussein. It was called the Gulf War.
angryc,
I'm eager to hear what the UN comes up with. Yesterday, I heard Hillary say she expected a strong RESOLUTION, like that will make any difference. Maybe they'll draft a resolution denouncing Kim Jong Il's failure to follow the previous resolution. If that's all they do, the UN will disprove Obama's pronouncement that "words matter." If they are only words, they don't matter at all.
TBomb – They don't need to send a bomb with a missle, the can send it in a suit case.
TBomb they don't need to send a bomb with a missle, they can send it in a suit case or other type of container. They could easily get it into the US through our borders.
As I read Tbomb's little piece about how bad Bush was I kept looking at who wrote it because it sounded so much like the good Reverend in tone, word choice, and was replete with the same nicknames Rev uses. I just couldn't believe that it was such a great imitation of Rev.
T-bomb knows the truth. Truth, when told by people who know it, sounds….I don't know…..similar.
Well constructed comment T-bomb. Short, and yet, so very accurate.
Roy,
Rev, Tbomb, and Jimmyjames sound almost identical. Could be they just all get their talking points from the same far left websites. Or it could be something else. I have no way of knowing. All I can see is e-mail addresses.
Rev, you as a Republican whoops, I'm sorry ,Libertarian ,don't repeat talking points? Please! Hey Avg.,I thought WimpyII's claim to fame was that "…we haven't been attacked since 9/11…" so why are we still so vulnerable? This just in King: terrorists are probably not deterred by the prospect of mutually assured destruction.
Tbomb, I assume you were addressing me about talking points.
Go read my post again and then tell me if it was Republican talking points.
I agree that extremist terrorists probably wouldn't be deterred by MAD. I didn't say they would be, but that doesn't change my point. North Korea WOULD be deterred, maybe Iran too. People think twice when their actions will certainly result in their own deaths. They'll be much more reluctant than if they think they are the ONLY ones with nuclear weapons.
Duh King, learn your history the CIA put Saddam in power in the 50's.Bush Sr. gave the chemicals to Iraq in the first place. Sr. had enough sense not to invade Iraq, to make it the breeding ground for terrorists that it is today. The Bushies always talked a good game about Democracy in the Middle East, but we love dictators because they keep their people under their thumb.Saddam never ranked in the top ten in dictators in the world. Two things Hatfields vs. McCOYS and oil.
Sanctions work. Saddam was pitifully weak, witness the little resistance by his military. That weakness came because of sanctions. So, resolutions with punitive sanctions can and do make a difference.
Having said that….N. Korea's Leader is looking for some international attention, he's a hopeless narcissist. All the attention has been paid to Af-Pak, Iraq and Gaza/Israel……so Dear Leader is throwing a failed-missile launch tantrum.
And average is right…..the N. Korean people are living in a bad situation…..but I don't see that as the condition triggering yet another American military adventure. Emotionally, I'm with average…let's f*ck the Dear Leader up……but too many lives will be lost as a result, just to satisfy my emotions.
