Bubba Don't Know Nuthin' 'Bout No Embryos

I mentioned President Obama's new embryonic stem cell policy a few days ago to illustrate how Obama politicizes an issue while pretending NOT to politicize it. I wasn't commenting on the policy itself, which can be fairly described as 'anything goes.' Obama places no restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, though he said he expects scientists won't be irresponsible enough to clone human beings (I wonder if the Tuskegee Airmen would agree that scientists won't be irresponsible…Dr. Mengele, please report to research).

I found Obama's comments on embryonic stem cell research to be simplistic and dismissive. Obama referred to embryos as "these tiny cells," and referred to the previous government policy as being a "false choice between sound science and moral values." Comments like these made me wonder if Obama even knows what an embryo is, because you'd have to be stone cold stupid not to see there is a moral issue here.

Then I heard former President Bill Clinton bloviating on the issue on CNN in a discussion with former Obama Surgeon General candidate, Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Get a load of this. You'll rarely hear anything this dumb:

Gupta: Let's talk about something you talked a lot about in the early part of your presidency, stem cells. There was an order today providing federal money for embryonic stem cell research. First of all, let me just ask you, as someone who studied this, is this going to always be as divisive an issue as it is now? Is this going to be the abortion of the next generation? Or are people going to come around?

Clinton: I think – the answer is I think that we'll work it through. If – particularly if it's done right. If it's obvious that we're not taking embryos that can – that under any conceivable scenario would be used for a process that would allow them to be fertilized and become little babies, and I think if it's obvious that we're not talking about some science fiction cloning of human beings, then I think the American people will support this….

Gupta: Any reservations?

Clinton: I don't know that I have any reservations, but I was – he has apparently decided to leave to the relevant professional committees the definition of which frozen embryos are basically going to be discarded, because they're not going to be fertilized. I believe the American people believe it's a pro-life decision to use an embryo that's frozen and never going to be fertilized for embryonic stem cell research….

But those committees need to be really careful to make sure if they don't want a big storm to be stirred up here, that any of the embryos that are used clearly have been placed beyond the pale of being fertilized before their use. There are a large number of embryos that we know are never going to be fertilized, where the people who are in control of them have made that clear. The research ought to be confined to those….
But there are values involved that we all ought to feel free to discuss in all scientific research. And that is the one thing that I think these committees need to make it clear that they're not going to fool with any embryos where there's any possibility, even if it's somewhat remote, that they could be fertilized and become human beings.

Words fail me. Bill Clinton has invented the 'unfertilized embryo' that cannot become a human being. It goes without saying that there's no such thing. An embryo, by definition, is a FERTILIZED egg. Conception has already happened. The embryo, by definition, IS a developing human being. It is called an embryo for the first 8 weeks, after which it's called a fetus. I have no idea why Dr. Gupta didn't correct President Clinton on such a basic error, especially after Clinton repeated the error over and over and over again.

Once Clinton's error is corrected, once Clinton is brought to realize what an embryo really is, then Clinton's words amount to a refutation of the Obama embryonic stem cell policy, because Clinton limits stem cell research to those cells that cannot become a human being, which would exclude embryos. Clinton's error refutes both himself and Obama. Clinton admits in his own uninformed way that there is a moral issue surrounding human life here.

Sounds to me like Clinton and Obama, the people claiming to be promoting science over ideology, don't know much about science in the first place. After all, it was candidate Obama who answered "it's above my pay grade" when Pastor Rick Warren asked him when human life began (John McCain gave the scientifically correct answer to the same question – "at conception.") If Obama doesn't know, maybe he shouldn't be so partisan and glib about embryonic stem cell research. Maybe he shouldn't have distorted and demonized the previous Bush policy, which at least gave consideration to both sides of the issue instead of only one side, as Obama does.

Rev, I think I accidentally deleted your comment. It got caught up by the spam filter for some reason, and evidently I hit the 'delete' button when I meant to hit the 'approve' button. Sorry buddy.

  • The Reverend

Is this the beginning of a new vast Ohio.com conspiracy experiment?

I'll be monitoring the situation and looking out for the black helicopters.

    Anyway…

Clinton, obviously, got his terms mixed up. And…he's not the president, so what he says, like his Jesse Jackson statement during the primary, should be taken with a grain of salt.

"I found Obama's comments on embryonic stem cell research to be simplistic and dismissive. Obama referred to embryos as "these tiny cells," and referred to the previous government policy as being a "false choice between sound science and moral values."

Those embryos ARE "tiny cells." The previous Bush administration's efforts in denying any further "destruction" of those "tiny cells" IS making a "false choice between sound science and moral values."

Furthermore, any casual observer realizes what the last 10 years of Republican political manueverings have been all about….political posturing to maintain a radical minority base of voters. Bush's stem cell actions were meant to satisfy that radical base.

In fact, Palin's vp selection was also meant to satisfy this same extremist element…..get them all excited. McCain's weird campaign, many times, had that same goal in mind. Since McCain's loss, the GOP practice of extremist-base baiting has continued. Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and others, not to mention Steele, have been spewing stupid, imbecilic, phrases…..meant to calm the nerves of that same very extreme minority base.

The Republican Party must break with their very freaky symbiotic relationship with this extremist base….if they wish to survive.

Don't forget, I've long predicted, because of the Bush-Cheney regime, that the GOP has been fatally wounded. The GOP is a wounded elephant, still dangerous, but near death. Total reform is the answer. I still see no signs of that happening.

  • Da King

No conspiracy on my part (yet). I couldn't figure out why your post ended up in my spam box.

And we don't use black helicopters. Too expensive in these recessionary times. We use directional microphones. You might want to check the black van down the street.

I definitely agree Clinton is real confused, but he used the same language about embryos a last month. It's a pattern. And if I'm not supposed to pay attention to what a former president says, why do YOU continue to focus on people like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Ari Fleischer, and Frank Gaffney ??? I think you miss Bush.
    —-
Did the embryos photos I posted look like MORE than just tiny little cells to you ? They did to me, just like abortion is about a little bit more than just a "choice." These are moral issues, even if you want to pretend they aren't. Human life IS worth more consideration than a hangnail.

I'll just ignore all the partisan dreck you spewed out that was off the point. It isn't worth dignifying. Why can't you simply accept the fact that some people look at things differently than you do ? Why can't you just argue the issues instead of engaging in endless demonization ? It makes you appear unbalanced.

Btw, there's nothing "extremist" about wanting to preserve human life and draw some boundaries around embryonic stem cell research. In case you haven't realized, Rev, WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS. It is our nature to want to live, not to destroy ourselves. Yours is the far more extremist view.

I'd say the death of the GOP is greatly exaggerated. Bush did wound them, no doubt (like Carter did to Dems), but just wait a few years. I assume you are aware that Obama's own 10-year budget plan, with all of Obama's rose-colored assumptions, will still leave us with a national debt of $23 trillion by 2019. America isn't going to put up with that nonsense for very long. Fiscal conservatism will be back in style very soon, not that it ever wasn't in style. Bush just didn't follow it. All the GOP has to do is return to it, and even at their worst, the GOP is more fiscally conservative than the Dems, who will literally spend us into the poorhouse if left to their own devices. We have more than one party for a reason. It's a very good reason.

Personally, I'd like to get rid of both parties and start over, but that isn't very realistic.

  • Tory Bug

*sigh* You know why pro-abortion folks like to refer to unborn babies as 'tiny cells'? It helps them justify murdering babies to themselves. It's kind of like if your grandmother has to live with you for 9 months while she waits to be admitted to a retirement home. Is it ok to just shoot her in the head because you don't want to be bothered with her or because the smell of her hair cream makes you want to vomit?

As a former pro-abortion person (I called myself pro-choice until I realized not everyone in the equation actually had much of a choice), I know all too well the logic of those who don't believe that the unborn have any rights. I was wrong in my thinking, believing so much of what I was told I should believe until I began thinking for myself. I kind of realized that my neighbor probably wouldn't like much it if I decided he was unwelcome to live in my neighborhood, so I used a vacuum tube to suck him out of his house and dismember him. Nor would I like it if he decided likewise about me.

If Clinton misspoke, then why did he keep repeating the misstatement? Don't be a fool. Clinton was/is terribly misinformed and didn't bother with educating himself before the interview. He truly came off as not the sharpest tool in the shed, and if a Republican had made a statement that so obviously showed his lack of knowledge on the subject, you know the media would have torn him apart.

  • Da King

    Tory,
Excellent post. Those who don't acknowledge a moral issue with abortion and embryonic stem cell research are just trying to relieve their own consciences. Either that, or they've bought into the nonsense being spewed by the politically correct crowd without really thinking about it. I congratulate you for seeing that ending a human life should not be taken lightly, as if it's nothing more than putting the garbage out on the curb. It amazes me that more people don't see that, including our current president.

Great point about the media too. Imagine if, say, Sarah Palin made those ignorant statements that Clinton made. She'd be the butt of jokes from here to eternity. But since it's Clinton, the media goes into radio silence mode like it's WWII. With the biased media we have, I don't know how a Republican ever wins an election. It's like trying to win the 100 yard dash while carrying a 50lb anvil. Huge disadvantage.

"Either that, or they've bought into the nonsense being spewed by the politically correct crowd without really thinking about it."

This I believe is the position both Clinton and Obama are in.

  • Da King

What kills me is that Dr. Gupta never corrected Bubba's anti-scientific bilge. Obviously, Gupta knows better. Maybe he was just too polite to call our ex-prez a dope.

  • larry d.

I've always thought Gupta is a joke as a journalist and his nomination certainly was a joke.

Obama's got to be the worst nominator ever.
