The Limbaugh Distraction

by Da King on March 3, 2009

in civil rights,conservatism,Democrats,freedom,GOP,liberalism,Uncategorized,White House administration

Last sunday on Face The Nation, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said [Rush Limbaugh is] “the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party.” Emanuel also said Limbaugh has been "praying for failure' of the Obama administration. He went on to say "…it’s our desire that the Republicans would work with us and try to be constructive, rather than adopt the philosophy of somebody like Rush Limbaugh.”

Notably, nobody had asked Rahm Emanuel a question about Rush Limbaugh. Emanuel just volunteered the above information. Previously, President Obama said people shouldn't listen to Rush Limbaugh, as if the entire GOP is but a parrot of Rush's daily radio talking points. ABC News' George Stephanopolous and talking head James Carville, both refugees from the Clinton administration, have called Rush Limbaugh the head of the Republican party. You may remember that Stephanopolous was criticized recently for getting HIS talking points directly from the White House. It seems abundantly clear that the strategy to demonize Rush Limbaugh, and by extension to demonize the entire conservative Republican ideology (by casting Limbaugh as it's leader), is coming directly from that same White House.

When Rahm Emanuel says Republicans shouldn't "adopt the philosophy of somebody like Rush Limbaugh," what does that mean ? What is Limbaugh's philosophy ? We can find out by perusing Limbaugh's recent speech at the CPAC conference. Limbaugh literally tells us what his definition of conservatism is:

"I want to tell you who conservatives are…When we look out over the United States of America… we see Americans. We see human beings. We don't see groups. We don't see victims. We don't see people we want to exploit…We do not see that person with contempt. We don't think that person doesn't have what it takes. We believe that person can be the best he or she wants to be if certain things are just removed from their path like onerous taxes, regulations and too much government…We recognize that we are all individuals. We love and revere our founding documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. We believe that the preamble to the Constitution contains an inarguable truth that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life, liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. [Applause] Those of you watching at home may wonder why this is being applauded. We conservatives think all three are under assault.
We look over the country as it is today, we see so much waste, human potential that's been destroyed by 50 years of a welfare state. By a failed war on poverty…There are no two things or people in this world who are created in a way that they end up with equal outcomes. That's up to them. They are created equal, given the chance…We want everybody to succeed. You know why? We want the country to succeed, and for the country to succeed, its people — its individuals — must succeed. Everyone among us must be pursuing his ambition or her desire, whatever, with excellence. Trying to be the best they can be. Not told, as they are told by the Democrat Party: You really can't do that, you don't have what it takes, besides you're a minority or you're a woman and there are too many people that want to discriminate against you. You can't get anywhere. You need to depend on us… take a look at all the constituency groups that for 50 years have been depending on the Democrat Party to improve their lives. And you tell me if you find any [who's problems have been solved]. They're still complaining, still griping about the same problems. Their problems don't get fixed by government. And those lives have been poisoned. Those lives have been cut short by false promises, from government representatives who said don't worry about it, we'll take care of you. Just vote for us.
…I want any force, any person, any element of an overarching Big Government that would stop your success, I want that organization, that element or that person to fail. I want you to succeed…the people who have achieved great things, most of it is not inherited. Most wealth in this country is the result of entrepreneurial, just plain old hard work. There's no reason to punish it. There's no reason to raise taxes on these people. Barack Obama, the Democrat Party, have one responsibility, and that's to respect the oath they gave to protect, defend and follow the US Constitution. They don't have the right to take money that's not theirs, from the back pockets of producers, and give it to groups like ACORN, which are going to advance the Democrat Party.
"President Obama…he's forgotten it's not his money that he's spending. In fact, the money he's spending is not ours. He's spending wealth that has yet to be created. And that is not sustainable.
President Obama, in six weeks of his administration, has proposed more spending than from the founding of the country to his inauguration? Now, this is not prosperity."

Thus, when Rahm Emanuel says the GOP shouldn't "adopt the philosophy of Rush Limbaugh," he is saying the GOP should stop being the GOP, because individual liberty, equality of opportunity, limited government, low taxes, etc. are supposed to be core Republican principles (I say "supposed to be," because Republicans often haven't followed their own stated conservative principles). Such a philosophy isn't something Rush Limbaugh dreamt up. That philosophy predates Rush by over two hundred years. It's the philosophy espoused by our founding fathers and enshrined in our founding documents. It's the philosophy of freedom that made America great. Obama, Emanuel, and company would have you forget all that, by placing the focus on the "divisive" Rush Limbaugh instead. They are saying, in effect, 'forget about America's founding principles, because Rush Limbaugh is a blowhard." I'd respond, "Rush Limbaugh is not the issue, the abandonment of America's core principles is the issue." The Democrats are using the Limbaugh distraction to mislead Americans into blind submission to the will of the Obamans. That's utter nonsense. You SHOULD listen to Limbaugh or someone similar, just as you SHOULD listen to Obama, and SHOULD listen to everyone else, from the far left to the far right. That's the only way to arrive at an informed decision. When political operatives like Emanuel tell you to STOP listening to the opposition, to stop questioning Obama for the sake of "unity," and when they start characterizing any disagreement as divisive and destructive, well, those are the very people you should be worried about. There should never be a time in America when Big Brother is not questioned, and Obama is certainly no exception, especially with so much at stake. Rush Limbaugh doesn't represent power in this debate. Obama does. And we should pay very close attention. Pre-Obama, liberals said it was imperative to speak truth to power, but now, it's questioning power that troubles them. Yesterday's activist becomes tommorrow's oppressor. No, thanks. All oppressors are the same to me. You can have them.

Democrats call Limbaugh the leader of the Republican Party and he says he is not a Republican but a conservative. I am both but I think that he really doesn't consider himself a Republican. I pay dues to the Party and I dare anyone to show that Limabaugh does that.

All Fascist regimes need an enemy, and usually those enemies get invented by the state. Now that Bush is gone, the “our way or else” democrats need a villain to demonize in public and serve as the nebulas opponent standing in the way of their glorious plans. Since the GOP has lost its way and has no real vision or leader, Rush is the closest thing to the head.

It’s also a nice play for the Dems because unlike Bush and other elected conservatives, Rush can’t lose elections and then disappear. He will always be around to demonize.

  • Da King

I'm not a Republican. I'm conservative on fiscal issues, more libertarian on social issues. I believe in the founding principles, which is why I have an aversion to the political left. They don't believe in them, except when it's politically convenient. Mostly they want to overturn them.

In any case, all this nonsense about Limbaugh is just a way to attack the messenger while obscuring the message. That's why so many liberals insert the words "fat druggie" in front of Limbaugh's name, to disparage him personally. I'm not a big Limbaugh fan, but I'd never tell anyone not to listen to him. That's the stuff of tyrants.

  • The Reverend

This is America, where we can listen to, read or view whatever we want.

But I disagree with the notion that the Democrats needed a new villain. Rush is the one who started this fight. He's the first person to come out openly wishing Obama to fail, after what?….two weeks after the inauguration? Despite what Republican revisions want us to believe, Democrats, in office or out, never wished openly for Bush to fail. We realized that if Bush failed, which he eventually did, the whole nation failed,….which is what eventually happened.

Its seems odd that a Democratic, "our way or else", President would take all that time talking to Republicans, showing them respect. You know, if he's really an "our way or else" kind of leader. It seems odd that Obama would have items yanked from the stimulus bill that Republicans complained about, if he's really an "our way or else" kind of president.

  • Tory Bug

I agree, DK. I think that there are those in the Democrats' ranks who need to have someone to hate. With GWB retired, they're left grasping. In the end, I believe that these are people who can't be satisfied, even when they're getting what they want. IMO, it's only a matter of time before they start hating the Obaminator, too.

I don't know of *anyone* who wants Obama to fail. However, I don't think he's making choices that will pull us out of the recession we're in, but rather choices that will extend it. He's got a very Hoover feel about him, with his ginormous spending spree. That's my biggest problem with him. That was my biggest problem with GWB, too, the 'stimulus'. Plus ça change…

  • Da King

Rev says, "Democrats, in office or out, never wished openly for Bush to fail."

LOL. Can't believe you made this statement, Rev. Must be that selective amnesia again. Liberals would have put Bush in prison if they could have. I don't think prison equates with success.

Liberals wished for the failure of almost everything Bush did for 8 years. I'll assume you were out of the country. That's the only way you couldn't know how the libs tried to destroy Bush.

  • Da King

But I agree that Rush is not a new villain. He's been a villain to liberals for twenty years. They are just resurrecting him now for some new political spin.

  • alan t.

Who cares. All I know is Limbaugh had lost a ton of weight. Literally, a ton. As in 2,000 pounds less than what he used to weigh. I just now saw a picture of him from last month, and he looks like he's gained that ton back. Plus, for good measure, an additional 800 pounds. A 2,800 pound weight gain. Seriously, this guy is dead from a heart attack within a year. I hope he doesn't go into full Oprah mode by blaming his thyroid instead of pointing his big fat fingers at the Twinkie buffet.

  • Christopher

Rush is obviously a very powerful person but its very weird (and a little scary)that a sitting president feels the need to comment on him. BHO and staff seem to make critical comments on the media normal operating procedure. Not a good sign…

  • larry d.

    A very creepy sign indeed.

  • Da King

But alan, if Rush dies of a heart attack, how is he going to run for president in 2012 ?

Oh well. If Rush goes, I guess that'll make Sean Hannity the leader of the GOP. At least the Dems will have SOMEBODY to demonize. That's what's important.

  • The Reverend

    alan t…….that's some funny stuff.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "the 800 lb. gorilla in the room".

    And to larry and Chris..

Relax, Obama included Rush Limbaugh's name in a whopping ONE sentence. That may sound like "normal operating procedure" to some, you know, ONE sentence, but not to many.

It's the teevee media, especially, who have played up the Limbaugh statements. The proof is in the QUESTIONS media have been daily asking Gibbs, and other Dems,…..they're mostly about Rush.

  • larry d.

A president and his chief of staff openly singling out individual members of the media for criticism–it's all good! Reminds me of Nixon, even.

  • Tbomb

But Alan he knew enough to wear black…it helps make one appear thin. But I'm guessing a black tarp was not the way to go.

  • Da King

    larry,
Do you think Obama will publish his enemies list online to make it, you know, transparent ?

Or will he leave it on a desk in the White House like Clinton did ?

  • larry d.

I'm sure it will all be part of the "Database" King but The One's enemies are always plainly in sight thanks to his lackeys in the press.
