The Wealth Of Nations Doesn't Happen By Osmosis

by Da King on November 3, 2008

Time for a little economic straight talk. This week's headlines informed us that Exxon/Mobil made a record profit of $14.3 billion for the 3rd quarter of 2008. Barack Obama immediately added this tidbit to his campaign stump speech to illustrate the unfairness gap between the haves and the have-nots, and also to bash John McCain's tax plan. The Barack Obama's of the world get very upset when private companies make such large profits. They see it as E-V-I-L and G-R-E-E-D-Y. In ObamaWorld, the more money you rake in, the more evil and greedy you are (federal government excepted). What Obama and friends leave out of the equation is this – Exxon/Mobil also paid $11.3 billion in taxes for the 3rd quarter. Isn't that enough ? Isn't that too much ? That money funds those endless government programs Obama loves so much (Obama has proposed increasing spending on no less than 175 government initiatives. I wonder when he finds time to sleep). You see, in order for Obama to redistribute wealth, there must be wealth to begin with, and it's our private sector that creates it. With so many American businesses struggling and/or failing right now, why is Obama holding up for derision the one company that is doing the best ? The reason is, Democrats play class warfare games to get elected, but Obama should realize that killing the golden goose doesn't make for very smart economic policy. It's not like we'd be better off if all our companies were losing tons of money, as the automakers, banks, airlines, and many others are doing. Count me as one who wishes all our businesses were as successful as Exxon/Mobil. That would take care of 98% of America's problems right there. In order to help our businesses be successful, which in turn enables our citizens to become employed, successful, and prosperous themselves, it just might be a good idea to HELP the business sector rather than add ever more hurdles for it to overcome. That's why John McCain's tax/economic policy, which lowers the business tax rate, keeps the capital gains tax rate low to encourage investment, and enables American businesses to be more competitive, is a REAL GOOD idea, while Obama's tax/economic policy, which penalizes business success and adds new business burdens, is a REAL BAD idea, unless we as a nation have some sort of perverse death wish.

While I'm on the subject, let's explode another Obama falsehood, one that he's repeated about 100,000 times by now. McCain's tax/economic policy is NOT the same as George W. Bush's, not at all. Bush cut the individual income tax rates for 100% of us, like Obama is proposing for 95% of us. McCain is NOT proposing individual income tax rate cuts. What McCain is proposing is to cut the business tax rate from 35% (second highest in the entire world) to 25%. I only wish McCain was cutting that tax rate even lower to attract more new businesses and more new jobs to this country. The object of taxation isn't to centralize wealth in the hands of the federal government, it's to help the people. Nothing helps people more than jobs. No government entitlement even runs a close second to employment for promoting the general welfare.

All this brings me to the news item of the day. In Janurary 2008, Barack Obama described his energy policy as follows:

Let me sort of describe my overall policy. What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there. I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted. That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

Obama plans to bankrupt the coal industry, by design. The coal industry supplies 70% of our electricity. Funny, the Messiah didn't mention his coal bankrupting plans when he was campaigning in coal mining states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. He pretended to be a friend of coal then.

During the same interview, Obama went on to say, "under my plan, electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket".

And you folks thought Obama was a friend to the middle class. You won't think so when you get your utility bills during an Obama administration. Obama's plans for coal come from the same left wing environmental mindset that have restricted our domestic oil supply and stopped nuclear power, leaving us dependent on countries like Saudi Arabia. If you are naive enough to believe Obama when he says he isn't beholden to special interests, you better think again. The environmental lobby is one of those special interests. Barack Obama will hurt every person in this country to appease them, by his own admission.

Most amazing of all is, Obama said he planned to bankrupt the coal industry and send electricity prices soaring BACK IN JANUARY, yet we haven't heard a word about it until now, on the verge of the election. Millions of people have already voted, and I bet next to none of them knew about this.

Instead of getting substantive information from the media, information that could help us make an informed decision about who should be the next president, we get "hope and change", and we get questions like the ones that Leisa Zigman, a reporter for KSDK-TV in St. Louis, asked Obama during a recent interview:

1.) “Your presidential campaign may go down as the most organized in history. Yet the polls remain tight in Missouri. In the last seven days what else can you say to sway undecided and McCain-leaning Missouri voters?”
2.) “Today, Bob Clark, founder of Clayco Construction, sent a letter to his employees. In part it read, ‘Sometimes, but rarely, a person appears at the right time and the right place to transform ordinary people into thinkers and doers who can accomplish more than they ever thought they could. That truly is the definition of inspiration. Barack Obama has this quality. I have witnessed it personally many times.’ In 2004, Mr. Clark raised thousands for the Bush campaign, but for the past two years, he’s raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for your campaign. Please respond.”
3.) “Who has helped your campaign more: Missouri U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill or Oprah?”
4.) “What was it like when you were in St. Louis in front of 100,000 people? What were you thinking as you looked out from the Arch to the Old Court House and beyond?”
5.) “Many people are worried about your safety. What are your thoughts in light of the alleged skinhead plot?”

One only marvels at how the Messiah maintained his composure under such withering journalistic scrutiny.

Wake up, America. You only have one more day.

No, the wealth of nations don't happen by osmosis but loss of wealth surely comes from Obamosis — i.e., soft socialism.

America stands at thge edge of an abyss. Could the country's ability to think actually have been so rotted out by the government schools over the years that it will actually electd a fraud like B. Hussein Obama to the presidency?

There's more that's funny about B. Hussein obama than the sounding of his name and his big ears. From his life story to his associates to his policies, the guy is as queer as a three dollar bill.

King there you go listening to Palin again. Too bad the San Francisco Chronicle has totally debunked her claim the Obama intends to bankrupt the coal industry. They answered her and said it was an out right lie — or should I say another out right lie. Also the supposed audio tape has been on line available for anyone even you to hear for the last January 17. Read it

According to the Government Office of Accountability (GAO) 2/3's of US businesses pay no taxes at all between 1998 and 2005 and 68% of foreign companies operating in US also paid no taxes what so ever in the same time period. Nice loop holes if you ask me.

I retired — early by choice I might add- from one of those big corporations. I was on the board. I know what did and did not happen. That chemical company thrived as long as the technical and marketing folks had a say in how the business was run. When the financial MBA types started with their magic and the company forgot about the quality, technical expertise, and customer the downhill fall started. I watched the "magic" those accountants performed to make the numbers look good for the shareholders and yup I was one of them. Still I left in disgust because I could and have never regretted my decision for a day. That company has not folded yet but it is a lot smaller and the stock has gone from $43 to last I looked < $2. As you can see my choice to leave was a good one.

You got me fired up now. Osmosis is a process by which molecules of a solvent pass through a semi-permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution thereby equalizing the concentration on both sides of the membrane. No the wealth of nations does not happen by osmosis because if it did the wealth would be equalized through the population instead of 10% of the population holding 90% or whatever of the wealth. It is about time for the top 10% to put in a permeable membrane so the wealth can begin to equalize some –by osmosis.

  • mary

got that reversed in my aggitation — from a more concentrated solution to a less concentrated solution therby equalizing the concentration on both sided of the membrane.

Obama will make new jobs .
    Build and fix roads =jobs
New development in energy = jobs
Hold down the national debt and we don't have to take loans from China.
What you didnt say is Mccain will increase the deficet more than Obama. What you want is personal wealth not a rich country. Not everyone earning more than 250k is in any postion to hire anyone. Most small businesses deduct so much they don't pay taxes.
Here is a pie chart on exactly how much Mccains cutting down earmarks will actually mean
    http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2008/09/john-mccains-bi.html

and who will create the countries biggest deficet ? Mccain

  • Da King

    mary,
I'm mystified as to how quoting Obama's EXACT WORDS could be an outright lie. That's pretty rich.

Of course 2/3rd's of businesses don't pay any taxes – they don't make any profits.

  • Da King

    Andrea,
Interesting that you say McCain would raise the national debt and Obama will lower it, when McCain said he'll balance the budget in his first term and Obama said it's not a priority for him to balance the budget. Maybe Obama IS magic.

I'm not close to rich, and the financial crisis cost me my job, so don't talk to me about how all I want is personal wealth. If all I cared about was a couple bucks in my pocket and "free" stuff, I'd vote for Obama. What I want is the correct policies to help the country as a whole, as opposed to policies that
will hurt the country financially for generations to come. If you can't see how helping businesses in America succeed is smart policy, then I feel sorry for you.

  • Da King

    Vince,
Judging by the reactions here, maybe the government schools are to blame.

Let's consider what you said about Exxon.

How was it possible for Exxon to make such a record profit?

Unregulated commodity traders bubblized the cost of crude, completely contrary to normal supply and demand fundamentals. Crude prices, and thus gasoline prices, doubled even though demand had only increased slightly. This created a windfall for Big Oil. Big Oil had done nothing whatsoever to merit those record profits….it was a direct result of a gamed system without oversight.

To prove my point…..why has crude dropped more than 55% recently, and gasoline as well? Has world usage dropped 55%? Of course not. The prices had been artificially gambled up and are now returning to fundamental levels in pricing again.

Exxon didn't deserve those record profits and that's why I'm not going to shed a tear when Obama taxes them.

To try to build some kind of larger socialist case using Exxon as the launching pad is misleading.

  • mary

Well the paper that gave the interview seems to think it is a lie. What he said is that we should build clean coal technology plants not old technology coal plants. If someone wants to build an old technology plant instead of a clean technology plant then they can but the cost of the cap and trade would bankrupt them. The clean coal technology plants would not have a cap and trade and would be cheaper to build. I did listen to it.

Perhaps those companies did not make any profits because of all the loop holes the Republicans have put into the tax code for big business.

I am done here. Bye everyone.

  • The Reverend

This was conveniently left out from what Obama said…..

"But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is, is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it. If we can’t, then we’re gonna still be working on alternatives."

  • Ghost of Vince Foster

"Judging by the reactions here, maybe the government schools are to blame."

Of course, King, of course — only there's no 'maybe' about it.

Once you begin to analyze things with this insight in mind, the seemingly contradictions dissolve, and things make sense.

Consider: Over a generation of kids have not only been stupefied in general by the public school, but also brainwashed into believe that America is not an exceptional country in spite of all the evidence that we indeed are.

Does that mean all kiddies in the public school have been so crippled? Of course not; just the majority of 'em.

You see these victims of the government schools — and I'm not speaking of the Negroes who the public schools have literally committed academic genocide on — posting against you all the time on your own blog.

Their ignorance and illogic is mind-blowing. And what would be humorous if it wasn‘t so pathetic is that these defects do all their blovating with such an air of certitude. It's as if they can turn their quiz answer of 2 + 2 = 5 into being correct just by their insistence.

This is the true mark of a public school victim — all hot air and no substance; high self-esteem but ignorant in math, science, history, English, Civics, etc., and not to mention reasoning ability.

And it is these people — the stupefied masses like the Akron Atheist (a.k.a. “The Reverend” ), Rebecca or whatever she’s calling herself these days, along with the legion of government dependents — more than anything else that is killing the U.S. Constitution, our Republic and prosperity.
