The Sarah Palin Show

by Da King on October 4, 2008

in Democrats,GOP,presidential race,Uncategorized,voting

I heard yesterday that the Nielsen ratings for the Palin-Biden VP debate were 40% higher than for the first McCain-Obama presidential debate. A transcript of the debate can be found here.

And the audience wasn't tuning in to see Joe Biden.

The VP debate was all about Sarah Palin. Democrats were eagerly tuning in to watch Palin fall flat on her face, and Republicans were watching anxiously in the hopes that she wouldn't.

It was a good night for the Republicans. Palin, who only 5 weeks earlier was occupied with running the state of Alaska, more than held her own with Joe Experience and his 36 years in Congress (36 years FOR CHANGE, apparently).

It wasn't that Biden had a bad night. He stayed on point, hammering home the idea that McCain was just like Bush, the key Democratic strategy for this presidential election. Biden displayed an expansive knowledge of political history. Adding to the gravitas of Biden's words was the fact that about half of his talking points were actually true. The other half, not so much. Palin also had some mis-statements, but it's pretty clear that Biden, not known as one to be constrained by anything so bothersome as the truth, won the Creative Political Fiction award for the night. Once the fact checkers get done analyzing the debate, I'm sure they will reach the same conclusion. Here are a few examples of Biden's, um, creativity:

Biden, Mr. Foreign Policy Expert, claimed NATO had driven Hezbollah from Lebanon prior to Bush screwing it all up. Wrong.

Mr. Foreign Policy Expert claimed that when he voted for the AUTHORIZATION TO USE MILITARY FORCE IN IRAQ, he wasn't voting for an authorization to use military force in Iraq, he was just voting to give Bush the authority to use a Dustbuster to vacuum the Iraqi desert, or something like that. Palin cleaned Biden's clock on that nonsensical position.

Mr. Foreign Policy Expert claimed Obama never said he'd negotiate with Iranian leaders without precondition, which, of course, Obama did say.

Mr. Foreign Policy Expert claimed that Gen. McKiernan said the surge strategy could not work in Afghantistan. Palin responded correctly that McKiernan (though Palin mistakenly called him 'McCellan') said no such thing. In fact, McKiernan said principles of the surge strategy COULD be applied in Afghanistan.

Biden claimed he was taken out of context when Palin confronted Biden for being against the use of coal for energy on that rope line. To be clear, Biden said there will be "no coal plants in America" on that rope line. Out of context, my fanny.

Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, which McCain did not do.

Biden said McCain also voted against funding the troops like Obama did. Untrue. There was only one bill for final passage, one that contained no timeline for withdrawal. Bush had already indicated that he'd veto any bill that had a withdrawal timeline. In the final bill presented for a Congressional vote, Obama voted AGAINST funding the troops. McCain voted FOR funding the troops.

Biden said he was for offshore drilling, but Palin pointed out that Biden had previously called drilling a "raping" of the environment.

Biden was grossly exaggerating when he claimed McCain had voted against alternative energy 23 times. We all know how bills get hundreds of add-ons thrown into them. McCain wasn't voting against alternative energy at all. As McCain said during his own debate, "nobody is against alternative energy."

Biden falsely said McCain was for deregulation, when McCain called for more regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. One fault with Palin in the debate was how she dodged the deregulation question. I am completely baffled by this non-response, especially since McCain also avoided the subject in his debate. As Democrats are repeatedly attacking Republicans on this issue, the Republicans are leaving all their ammunition in the gun. I don't get it.

Biden said no American would pay a higher tax rate under Obama than they did under Reagan. That is false. The highest tax rate under Reagan was around 28-29%. It would be 39% under Obama.

Biden claimed people will pay more taxes under McCain's health plan. Not true. They will pay less, since McCain's health care tax credit far outweighs the fact that they are taxable.

Biden claimed Palin instituted a windfall profits tax in Alaska. Not true. Palin made tax reforms that increased taxes on oil companies, but they weren't a windfall profits tax.

Biden said the financial bailout incorporated the four principles Obama laid out (as if Obama has provided any leadership on the bailout, which he hasn't), but two of the four principles Obama referenced in his speech are not included in the bailout package.

Biden repeated the same distortion of McCain saying "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" comment. McCain actually said the economy was in crisis.

As for Palin, her mis-statements were:

She claimed McCain's health care plan would be budget neutral. It would not be. It would reduce government revenues and not replace them.

Palin said Iraq troop levels were at pre-surge numbers. This one is true in spirit, if not precisely true. Troop levels are still a little higher than before the surge, but they have come way down.

Palin claimed that “millions of small businesses” would see tax increases under Obama’s tax proposals. At most, several hundred thousand business owners would see increases.

Palin said it was the VP's job to "preside over the Senate." Nope. The Constitutional power of the VP is only to break a tie vote in the Senate.

On the basis of who was the more honest, Palin won the debate. On the basis of who was the bigger bs-er, Biden did.

larry, that link doesn't work….are you sure there really is a site like that?

King: Factcheck.org has it about right. Understandably, you attempted to beef up mistakes by Biden.

But none of this is really the point of the debate comparison….do you think?

If you can honestly say that Palin proved by her performance that she's ready to be a heartbeat away…then just say so. The nation didn't see that.

The nation saw a frenetic display of college-like recitalism after all night cramming. It's the best she could do being as unqualified as she currently is.

Put her back in the oven…..she's still unbaked….and maybe in a number of years she'll be ready for prime time. I don't ever see her being a national figure but I could be wrong.

  • John Warren

    Dear Editor

Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is the best future leader for this nation, not Senator Barak Obama. Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is also would be better at leading our nation in the future after a McCain Presidency than Senator Barak Obama would be in leading our nation in the future starting in January 2009. There are great reasons our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin would be a better future leader than Senator Barak Obama. The greatest reason for our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin's is ideology. Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is conservative in that she is pro life, marriage, guns, low taxes, low government spending, small government, unintrosive government, traditional and judeo Christian values, Bible reading and prayer in our public schools, and military spending. Senator Barak Obama is a liberal who is anti every thing that I have described that our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is pro about or for. A second reason that our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is superior is because of experience. As a governor she has two years of executive administrative governing experience that Senator Barak Obama does not have. A final reason that our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is superior is because of political accomplishments. When our soon to be beautiful Vice President Sarah Palin came to office she accomplished 3 major things which are as follows: she showed great leadership in the 3 following areas: government reform, the state budget and the economy, and wise use of natural resources. She reformed government by standing up to the big oil companies by breaking up the monopoly on power and resources. She insisted on competition and basic fairness which ended the control that the oil companies had on the state, and thereby returning control of the state back to the people. She also stood up to the special interest and lobbyist, and produced major ethics reform. She lead well in the state budget by generating a surplus which came about by vetoing a half billion dollars of wasteful spending, ending the abuses of earmark spending by congress, and by getting rid of the private jet, the chef, and the chuffer. Economically under her leadership she brought about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. She also suspended the state fuel tax, and when oil and gas prices went up dramatically, and filled up the state treasury, she sent a large share of that revenue back where it belonged – directly to the people of Alaska . On natural resources she has shown great leadership by beginning a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence. When the last section of the pipeline is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart. Senator Barak Obama has done nothing, so please vote John McCain for President and give to our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin the opportunity that she deserves leading the nation into the future after a John McCain presidency. When our soon to be Vice President does lead the nation as President after a John McCain presidency. She will be the greatest President that we have ever had. Finally she is smarter than Senator Barak Obama

    Thank You

    John Warren

Biden won the debate, Palin won the commercial. At this point, that's all the R's have left. Like every other neocon, Palin refused to address the issues, instead adopting the George Bush approach that if I talk loudest and maintain my lies while at the same time telling them how great they are and that God loves them, they'll listen to me. Yes, that's tough and feisty and all, and certain people are drawn to that, then they return to their regular lives and paying bills and worrying about health care and then they realize…..Palin wants to tell you how great and hard-working you are so that you will ignore the issues.

The problem with calling these things "debates" is that they are not. They are commercials. Were it truly a debate, she would have lost significant points for avoiding the questions. So, sure King, she won. The commercial. And the polls show that it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Americans like her, yes, but not for Vice President.

I think you all have to face the facts that the R ship is sinking……..even Krauthammer's jumped off.

I think Rev is right. She was the right choice for a desperate candidate, but it is unlikely she'll stay on the national stage if McCain loses. I will say it's interesting, King, that everyone else who "factchecked" had a lot more in Palin's column than you do. I guess that's why it's your show, though. And I watched McCain say "the fundamentals of our economy are strong"…..how can you say he never said that? We all saw it.

Finally, is it too much to ask her to put a "g" on the ends of words? The word is helping, not helpin. It is putting, not puttin, gosh darn it. I shudder to think how neocons would react if Mr. Obama talked that way. The most stunning thing to me in the whole debate was that she actually made Joe Biden look………human. I thought he did a great job of holding back and not getting all longwinded like he usually does. He had a couple spots, but for the most part stayed on point.

  • The Reverend

John Warren used this phrase……"our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin"…10 times.

    …..and then this….

"Finally she is smarter than Senator Barak Obama."

    Freakin' scream.

  • Ghost of Vince Foster

    Exacto, John Warren.

The winning ticket of McCain/Palin will become Palin/? in 2012

  • roysoldboy

King, Palin was right about the duties of the Vice President. Let me quote Article I, Section 3, Clause 4 to prove that she was right.

"The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote unless they shall be equally divided."

Clause 5 says, "The Senate shall choose their other officers, and also a President pro tempore, in the absence of the Vice President, or when he shall exercise the office of President of the United States."

Sure enough the lady from Alaska was right about the duties of the Vice President. Luckily Biden didn't call her on what she said and very professionaly Ms. Ifill didn't ever seem to be trying to influence the debate.

I agree with you that she more than held her own. I must mention to a couple of commenters, and they know who they are, that I heard some pundits say before the "debate" that Palin had to direct the topic to energy as often as she could and she did just that at least enough times, but allowed Biden to say some very untrue things about that field of thought.

I always put the word "debate" in quotes like that because these things aren't really debates at all. They are question and answer sessions that don't come close to the Lincoln-Douglas debates as "debates". I don't think that Lincoln would have prosecuted that Civil War if his debates were like the present made for TV Q & A sessions. We are lucky that television hadn't come into vogue, that year, yet.

  • The Reverend

    roy…

In those blurbs from the Constitution…..I didn't see anything other than a VP's ability to break deadlocked votes.

Palin talked of expanding some "flexibility" in the Constitution in order for the VP to help advance the president's "agenda" better in the Senate.

Even Joe Sixpack knows better than that.

She simply makes stuff up……and then blind supporters, like yourself, repeat the stuff she makes up…swearing that it's all true.

    Weird stuff.

  • Ghost of Vince Foster

    King,

To see the effect Sarah Palin has on the GOP base, check out these pictures of her rally in California yesterday.

The media is clueless about her attraction to the averag eperson.

Reverend Red it seems that you are beginning to really suffer from that liberal disease I call selective reading. For some reason you called Article I, Section 3, Clause 4 of the Constitution a blurb from the document itself. If you read all the words things will always make more sense to you. Here the "blurb" is one more time for you to read and try to determine what all the words are and what they say.

***"The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote unless they shall be equally divided."***

Those words say that he has one duty and only one, and that is to preside over the Senate. Now I know that you of the far left were very taken aback when VP Cheney said that according to the Constitution he had a legislative duty and that is because of being the presider and having a vote at times. I suppose you don't know that it has been done a time or two.

Really, Red, the Constitution says only that much about the VP until you look at the part that says he takes the chair if the Pres can't perform his duties and that part is in an Amendment.

It is painful seeing those with that terminal disease, liberal thinking , that you have not reading all the words. You go on with your selective reading ways and you will never have to open your eyes to the fact that libs aren't really as smart as they think they are.

  • roysoldboy

Hot dang, Ghost do those pictures look a bit more crowded than an Obama rally in the same facility would look?

  • da truth

So roy and Vince are you implying you have any chance of winning California whatsoever? Man, no wonder conservatism is dead.

  • averagejoe5

Ghost – this is happening all over America. Today my brother went to a Palen rally. Last week it was scheduled in a venue that held 3000. There was so much response they moved it to a venue over twice the size. My brother got there an hour early (2:00PM)to get a good seat. THe place had been full since they opened it at 10AM. There were an estimated 5000 people waiting outside to see if they could get in. Many came and left when they couldn't find a seat. Many waited outside and listened over the speaker system. (In 95degree sun)

In another small town in FL she filled a stadium with over 20,000 seats and there were people standing outside waiting to get in. She is liken to the Beatles or Elvis.

America loves her and the great thing she has going for her is that the less fear she shows and the more strength she exudes the more they fall in love with her. Nothing is as appealing as a strong woman, to both men and women.

This is going to be a landslide.

I wonder what Father Flagel is saying now?

  • Da King

    roy,
You're right. Palin described the duties of the VP accurately. I should not have included that in my list of errors. Take one error away from Palin.

And I noticed that none of the Dems here disproved anything I said about all of Biden's bs. I'm not surprised by that one bit. If anything, I went easy on Biden. He said several other things that are arguably wrong, that I didn't include in the list. I stuck with only the ones that were obviously wrong. One example is when Biden said he didn't support McCain's policies on Iraq when Palin pointed out that he did. In fact, Biden DID support McCain's policies calling for more troops in Iraq until 2006, when Bush started supporting the same idea. It was only then that Biden changed his stance 180 degrees and contradicted his own previous position. Palin had it right. There's a lot more too.

But Biden did sound very experienced and confident in spouting his continuous distortions and falsehoods. That's probably why Dems think he won the debate. They aren't so bothered by whether a thing is true or not. They only care if it's anti-Bush or not.

  • Ghost of Vince Foster

Yes, Average Joe, Sarah is exciting the country — although the Drive-by media is lothe to report it.

And even McCain is starting to catch fire as he make the case that the mortgage mess can be laid at the feet of the Dims and BO in particular who got so much money from Fanny & Freddy.

So as I mentioned to King, don't believe the polls. There are biased (until maybe a week before the election when the pollesters' reputation is on the line).

The polls right now are designed to form public opinion, not to report on it.
