Speaking Of Global Warming….

I'm happy to report that GOP Senators, along with 4 Democrats, voted down the Boxer-Lieberman-Warner Climate Bill, in a move that will kick the cap-and-trade carbon tax can down the road until next year, when support for the economy-killing bureaucratic monstrosity will presumably be stronger.

There is more to say about the alleged "consensus" on global warming, however. Al Gore famously declared the global warming debate to be over a while back, and many seem to agree with him. As proof of scientific consensus, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) is cited. In February 2007, the IPCC found a 90% or greater probability that human activity (the burning of fossil fuels) was the cause of global warming over the last hundred years. The IPCC claims the planet has warmed just short of a whopping 1 degree in the last century, which Democrats took as a clear sign that America should abandon this free market capitalism nonsense at once. Of course, Democrats also think the existence of one poor person anywhere in a country of 300 million is sufficient reason to abandon free market capitalism, so we may not want to listen to them. When I think of the Dems economic socialist intentions, the saying 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' always pops into my mind.

But I digress. The IPCC's declaration on man-made global warming was signed by 19,000 scientists, and these were REAL scientists, not the FAKE kind that private industry uses. These were GOVERNMENT scientists, you know, the good ones. We know they are good, because government NEVER lies, a lesson that poor Winston Smith was forced to learn the hard way in the George Orwell novel 1984. Not to worry though, Winston was only a fictional character. There are NO examples of government ever lying to it's own citizens in real life (this is doubly true on sundays, when Congress isn't in session).

Now, I admit that 19,000 agreeing scientists is a lot, and it does sound mostly consensual, sorta like Bill Clinton's sex life….

Except when almost 32,000 American scientists have signed the Oregon petition, which states:

We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth."

So, what's going on here ? Do we have a consensus or don't we ? It seems we don't. Could all 32,000 of these American scientists be the BAD kind ??? That seems pretty unlikely to me. Scientists aren't really good or bad anyway. I was just funnin' the Dems before, because they immediately demonize anyone who doesn't hold with their global warming alarmist theories. Scientists just follow the scientific data (in theory).

I don't pretend to know who is correct about global warming. I'm not an expert on the subject. I'm just pointing out that there DOES seem to be a debate still going on, no offense to the Algoreans.

If you Republicans think you are going to build a movement around global warming denial, go ahead and try it. You are going to get your heads handed to you in November anyway.

Da King June 10, 2008 at 3:08 am

Republicans ???

I was talking about scientists.

larry d. June 10, 2008 at 8:00 am

Who said anything about a movement about global warming denial?

The Reverend June 12, 2008 at 6:52 am

Answer to larry: Republicans

Da King June 12, 2008 at 8:30 am

If you watched the Senate debating the Climate Change Bill last week, you'd see that most Republicans believe in global warming, a fact that I pointed out in my previous post on that subject.

larry d. June 12, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Come on, King.

Why on earth would the Reverend watch a Senate debate when he can just wait for John Cusack to tell him what to think about it all on HuffPost?

The Reverend June 12, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Everyone, except the flat earthers, agrees the earth is warming.

It's what's causing it, where the arguments start.

I should have been more specific. Republicans believe in global warming, but they don't necessarily agree that man is causing it.

Da King June 13, 2008 at 11:54 am

Actually, I read some data that says the earth hasn't warmed in the last 10 years, that it has cooled.

And those Senate Repubs I was talking about mostly did seem to think man was causing global warming. They only disagreed with the economic boondoggle of a solution that Barbara Boxer and crew were proposing, and whether the boondoggle would even have any effect.
