Andy’s Signed According to ESPN

Update: By now you’ve probably heard Varejao’s contract is worth up to $50 with incentives and the sixth year isn’t fully guaranteed.  Based on that, the contract makes much more sense.

ESPN reports that the Cavs have come to terms with Anderson Varejao on a six-year $50 million deal.

That’s over $8 million per year, giving Varejao a significant raise over the $6.2 million he opted out of for the coming season.

Given how contract negotiations went the last time the two parties bumped heads, this is akin to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers making nice.   The last negotiations were contentious to say the least.

Varejao had his best year as a pro, starting in 42 games in place of an injured Ben Wallace and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas 2005, The Sequel. Soon to be better known in NBA circles as “Z2.” It’s going to be almost as delightful as “Rocky V,” I’m sure.

What a waste of money. Obviously no one wanted him, I don’t understand why they signed him for so much?

Why did they sign him for so much? Because Ferry assumed Boozer would opt-out, thereby giving him Charlie Villanueva on the roster to use as leverage in Varejao’s negotiations, that’s why.

Just like nearly everything else Ferry has done over the course of the past four years, it took two minutes before his only plan fell through. Accordingly, Ferry could subsequently choose to sit down at a desk on a telephone and patiently use managerial skills to work out a trade for a forward, or, he could take the easy way out, and promptly grossly overpay a role player to an unmoveable contract that will haunt the team’s salary cap for years.

Guess which route he chose.

I don’t think signing Andy V. long term at a price is a bad deal. Long term is he our starting center after next year ? Maybe our back up center if Shack stays and Z retires or vice a versa ? Another question I have is Shack won a title with Kobe and one with D-Wade . Who were the power forwards on those teams ? I don’t know either. What does that say ? Could either of those teams win a championship next year or has the game evolved past that ? I would like to see a article about these thoughts.
