A premature dong

Posted April 3rd, 2008 by admin

Bulls 101, Cavs 98

–I hearby nominate Ben Wallace’s dunk attempt with 2:30 left in the loss to the Bulls as the symbolic moment of the Cavs season. Ahead by two points, it might’ve given the Cavs key separation. It was right in front of the Bulls bench and the crowd was ready to explode, which probably would’ve forced a timeout. Instead, somehow, Wallace ran into the rim on the way up. It was shocking. It looked like such a lock, the sound crew at Quicken Loans Arena had already started playing their Big Ben chime but it had to be cut off in mid-dong. This season so many times everything looked it was set up only for the execution to fail.
–This was the first game the Cavs had everybody available since mid-Janauary (except Eric Snow, but he is not a rotation player anymore). But it turned out not to last. LeBron James hurt his lower back in the third quarter and couldn’t sit down during the fourth. After the game he said it limited him during the fourth quarter when he scored only one point as the Bulls zoomed past. He wasn’t sure how he’d feel by Saturday afternoon. Although, I must say I thought Thabo Sefolosha did a quality job on LeBron down the stretch, staying close to him yet working through pick-and-rolls so as not to let him get a corner.
–Delonte West made three defensive plays in the last two minutes and two of them were good. He got a steal when he got his hand in the passing lane while helping on Joakim Noah. Then he drew a charge as Ben Gordon tried to drive past him. However, running over Gordon as he took a 3-pointer with 1:42 left was a bad mistake. That is the sort of stuff that costs games. Gordon is a 90 percent free throw shooter.
–In the second half two things happened to the Cavs. First, they allowed the Bulls to get too comfortable in their drive-and-kick game. Primarily Daniel Gibson was abused because he couldn’t keep anyone in front of him. Larry Hughes, Luol Deng and Gordon were all hot and when that happens the Bulls usually win. Second, they stopped pushing the ball in transition. They had zero fastbreak points in the second half and just nine free throws. That combination spelled doom.
–Hughes was strong tonight and he deserves credit. Most impressive to me was how committed he was to running the offense, he had nine assists and made a lot of good decisions with the basketball. If he did that more with the Cavs instead of taking spot up jumpers he would’ve been much more valuable. As for him going 11-of-17 shooting, he had one of his nights. He’d been shooting 37 percent with the Bulls, worse than he was with the Cavs.
–It is a mystery when Gibson truly will be able to get back on his feet. He is just 4-of-17 since coming back and it is obvious he is not 100 percent. I know that Mike Brown wants to create a rotation and stick to it and I respect him for that decision. But again, I believe Damon Jones should be getting chances. He has made shots all season long and he runs the offense better than Gibson does. I understand Gibson is hurting, that must be accounted for. At midseason on the last shot, I’d have said Gibson was about 75 percent. Now, you can just see his balance is off because of that foot.
–When the Cavs were struggling to score late, I question having Wallace and Anderson Varejao on the floor together. If not Zydrunas Ilgauskas then Joe Smith needs to be out there. It just makes the Cavs too easy to guard. Especially tonight because after Andy threw a bunch of stuff in last night he started thinking he could make post moves and one-handed bounce passes in the lane and whatnot tonight. That said, Wallace had three blocks, three steals, and eight rebounds and took charge. It was a quality effort.

Recap:

Pregame

Starting lineups

Bulls: Krik Hinrich, Larry Hughes, Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah
Cavs: Delonte West, Devin Brown, LeBron James, Ben Wallace, Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Officials
Dan Crawford, Matt Boland, Courtney Kirkland

–Ben Wallace is going try to play again tonight. He told the Bulls media he’d actually been dealing with a pitched nerve in his bad, which we had not been told about. We were told it was a strain and spasms. Maybe it is all the same, I don’t know. Considering it is the Bulls, you know he wanted to.
–Last time the Cavs played the Bulls Joakim Noah shamed Andy Varejao. Ilgauskas did not play in that game. Let’s see if the tables turn tonight.
–Drew Gooden won’t play with a abdominal strain. He doesn’t like to miss games, so you know he is hurting.
–The Bulls are a jump shot team. The Cavs need to keep them off the offensive glass and rotate to contest shots. If they do, they will have an excellent chance to win. Chicago can get hot from the outside but it usually doesn’t last. Which is why Larry Hughes fits in so well.

Halftime — Cavs 55, Bulls 45

–The Cavs went on a nice 12-1 run late in the first half to build themselves a lead. Though the Bulls have done some nice passing to get guys open around the rim at times, overall the Cavs have been pretty aggressive on defense. The Bulls were a little hot early and then they cooled off a bit. Ben Gordon, Larry Hughes and Luol Deng are a combined 14-for-21 and the Cavs still have a 10-point lead. They have also forced 12 turnovers.
–The offense has been pushing the ball well tonight, wanting to keep the Bulls from setting up. It has resulted in some ugly fastbreaks — West made a couple decisions I am still scratching my head on — but that has allowed them to get some easy shots and forced a lot of fouls. The Cavs have 17 free throws to the Bulls’ 10. The turnovers have made it easier.
–Ben Wallace has been pretty solid in the first half. He blocked two shots, took a charge and has three baskets. When he is playing next to Z it seems like he can be effective.
–Other than a couple impressive layups in traffic it didn’t seem like LeBron had a special half, yet he ended up with 18 points. A large reason is he got to the foul line seven times by attacking, especially in transition.
–West has seemed to improve his floaters in the lane since coming to the Cavs, I didn’t know that was part of his game before he came here. I do know he’s been working on them a little bit with Cavs development coach Chris Jent.

Postgame

Stars
Hughes, 25 points, nine assists, eight rebounds

Hughes is having one of his rare gems.

Don’t like this game…making me nervous. Andy still looks out of sync, I know he had a good game last night. Z looks great tonight. LeBron looks like he has more energy too.

  2. Tom Says:

Apparently, when LeBron checked back in at the 8 minute mark, it wasn’t him.

What is GOING ON!? My only clue is that we’re out of energy after playing last night. Everyone looks 2 steps slower.

  3. Josh Says:

If I see Andy jog down the court and jaw at an official one more time… seriously, who neutered that guy? No effort at ALL.

Well, they lost a game. Only a matter of time before Alan, TP’s hair, and the rest of the circus take the floor. Let the ripping begin! In fact, I’ll start it, just so no one thinks I’m a homer or anything, right?

For the record, I think I’m done defending Mike Brown. He has talent on his roster, he has players, lots of pieces who should fit and be able to mesh together just fine, the chemistry looks fine between the new guys and everyone else… and Mike has no idea what to do with it. None. I’ve tried to see what he’s trying to do, and I just cant figure it out. No Sasha whatsoever, Z running 30 feet from the basket to put his hand out at the ballhandler, then lumbering back to try to keep his man from dunking the ball, blind faith in Andy but no faith in Joe Smith or Wally from night to night. I mean, it’s not rocket science right? Maybe we were wrong about Damon Jones. Read that sentence again. Running out of time to figure this out, coach. The clock is really ticking now.

Bad loss, but I’m certainly not going to pretend it matters. In the big picture, we wont remember this game. I’m sure Larry will, but no one else. I just hope the poor Chicago fans who are all excited about this performance arent shocked by the 4-19 and the 8 turnovers in the next game. But hey, those were the days, right Mike C?

  4. LeCavalier Says:

    The horror…………the horror…..

  5. Matt Says:

Way to give the game away with jumpers, fellas. I guess we figured, gee, if Larry Hughes can hit all his jumpers, so can we!

  6. Corporate Whore Says:

Terrible loss. I realize that the 4th spot is basically locked in, but to have a 17 point lead against a shitty team at home and lose? This team does indeed look to be a very good candidate for one and done. James looks so tired. Don’t necessarily just look at his scoring numbers (though, those are down, too). Look at his rebounds/assists. The last few games, those are down considerably. Maybe he’s just resting. That’s the hope anyhow. This is a bad loss. This sucks.

  7. Jay Says:

Corporate Whore Says: This team does indeed look to be a very good candidate for one and done. I agree with that. The other teams in the East are too good and the Cavs seem like they don’t care half the time. I wonder if Mike Brown knows what he is doing half the time.

  8. ttss. Says:

The cool thing about Mike Brown is that if he decides to jump from a plane he can just use his pants to land.

  9. Michele Says:

It is unacceptable that Damon Jones rots on the bench especially with Gibson clearly not at 100%. Damon and Sasha could’ve helped this team win this game but coach potatohead is more concerned about proving some kind of point. We all can see that Andy and Ben do not compliment each other on the floor but by the time our coach figures this out it will be too late. It’s time to fire Mike Brown after they get swept out of the first round of the playoffs. It’s been 3 years now since this team has worked on any offensive fundamentals and it’s really beginning to show.

  10. Ed Says:

Simply put - worst loss of the season. I realize it’s likely meaningless, but it could make things interesting down the stretch as far as home court is concerned.

A win would have basically locked up the 4 seed in my mind….now maybe it’s not a lock. The Cavs appear to be coasting and the Wizards have some winnable games remaining. They’re gonna beat Miami and move to 3 games back.

This team looks out of whack right now….and Mike Brown looks as clueless as ever. I said when they made the trade that it put a lot of pressure on Mike Brown, and it’s not looking good right now.

The disturbing thing of late is the horrible defense. 3 games in the last 6 where teams have show over 50%??? Come on….that’s supposed to be Mike Brown’s area of “expertise”.

Tonight he stuck with Szczerbiak late and rolled with Ben Wallace late when it appeared the Cavs needed Z’s offense on the floor.

And why is Sasha not playing at all?

Hopefully this will be a game we all forget, but right now it’s hard to have much confidence in how this team looks.

  11. alan t. Says:

I wonder why LeBron’s rear license plate still says KNG OF AK, but the front license plate now says I LUV WALSH.

  12. Temple-Man Says:

A recurring theme with this team is it’s inability to blow out inferior opponents or build on big leads. With the Bulls playing like cannon fodder and the Cavaliers up by 17, I really thought we were going to run away with this one and give the starters some much needed 4th quarter rest. But once again, we took our foot off the gas and let a disorganized jumble of mediocre misfits back in the game. Whenever we get a lead we start jacking 3s and throwing bad passes. This includes the KING in a big way. New thing to work on this summer: Killer Instinct!

Historically, good teams put bad teams against the wall and drill them full of holes when they don’t come to play. The “cavalier attitude” always seems to be “let’s screw around with this lead until they catch up”. Note that in spite of the Cavaliers being 8 games over .500, we’ve actually given up more points than we’ve scored. Simply put, when we lose, someone is kicking our behinds. When we win, it’s almost always by a slim margin.

Since LeBron will probably have some free time come mid-May, he and his teammates should watch some old tapes of Magic’s Lakers or Jordan’s Bulls and learn how to relentlessly pound bad teams into whimpering little girls. Then you can spend the 4th quarter on the bench laughing and joking with teammates during 12 minutes of pure garbage time. It’s not a bad way to live in the NBA if you have the focus.

Larry Hughes…what a jerk! Good riddance. His good game tonight angered me more than all his bad games here. Clearly $13 million/year wasn’t worth giving a decent effort for us. Even Joe Tait ripped him the post-game for showing us what he refused to do in a Cavalier uniform.

  13. MJ Says:

I really can’t see this team getting past the 2nd round. And depending on who we play the first round, we can get beaten. Although I think we can handle Toronto or Philly in the first round, Washington has a chip on their shoulder and they are now at full strength with Gilbert, Jamison, and Butler. Honestly, I can see the Wizards beating us in 6 or 7 games in the first round. Our defense is still lackluster and our offense is, well, attrocious.

By the way, how pathetic was that Ben Wallace attempted dunk in the 4th. With that dunk, we would have been up by 4 and who knows what happens. I mean, the guy gets no lift. If anybody notices, he only gets blocks when players have the ball around their chests. It is a scary thought to imagine what type of player Big Ben will be by the time he contract expires……he will possibly be a towel-waver.

  14. MJ Says:

What alan t.? That comment makes absolutely no sense. Why would LeBron ever love Walsh?

  15. alan t. Says:

I may have been mistaken. Granted, he was going about 160 MPH in a school zone when I saw his car, but I think LeBron’s front plate actually said ILUVDONNIE.

By the way, I enjoyed the blog headline. Isn’t there a way for the Cavs team doctor to do something about those premature dongs?

  16. Douglar Says:

AT… I got the Joke, and I laughed (some people are a bit slower).

So when is Windy going to confess that he’s not voting for LeBron for MVP (if he does, he might lose his voting privileges).

LeBron will finish 5th in MVP voting (Kobe/CP3/KG/T-Mac/LeBron).

  17. Dan Says:

truth be told, that effort was upsetting…ok lebron hurt his back but if it were that bad he would have been out… im sorry his back hurts but the guy is expected to drive and if he cant finish cause of his back he still should be able to kick it out as everyone on the opposing team collapses on him. even at 50% hed be better than most people guarding him in this league…his lack of aggressiveness the past few weeks is starting to hurt this team and it better not be there come playoff time or we will be out in the first round

  18. larry d. Says:

The key dunk Wallace missed was at the end of a beautiful Varejao one-handed bounce pass in the lane.

  19. doc Says:

That’s a pretty bad loss folks. At home, full contingent of players, playoff drive, Larry Hughes, and they lay a giant egg in the second half.

Anyone else a little worried that Bill Duke might be better off back in the jungles of South America slicing his cheek with razors? In the Bobcats game, he puts Lebron back in with 5 minutes left and 5 fouls and lets him guard JRichardson (their quickest, most aggressive, most dynamic offensive player). Amazingly, Lebron fouls out trying to stay in front of him. Inexplicably Sasha and Damon Jones are buried on the bench so journeymen like Devin Brown and JerryMaguire and midget shooting guards like Boobie can play. He likes going three on five at the end of games (Wallace and Varelao on the court together). He calls stupid “momentum halting” timeouts after other teams make a couple of hoops, like a college coach. He lets Lebron jack 5-7 threes a game despite the Almighty one clanking away at 30% on the year. I’m just sayin’….. Does Lebron need a strong willed coach to reach his potential? Larry Brown? Phil Jackson?

I spoke to a couple buddies recently who arent Cavs fans. They all said that they hate watching the King play basketball. I was aghast. How could you not like watching the King? But then I listened for a bit…. It’s all isolation and pounding the dribble and one on one. He doesn’t move the ball. Firing a cross court skip pass when you get triple teamed with the shot clock running down isn’t moving the ball. They claim that he accumulates stats for the simple reason that he dominates the ball so much; of course he’s going to have 6-7 assists a game. Almost like the stat line is deceiving. Word around the league is that guys don’t like playing with him. That he’s a ball hog….. I don’t know if I buy the argument, but as this putrid season winds down, it does give you something to think about over the long off season.

  20. doc Says:

Lebron’s yahoo messenger password is “quentinrichardsonsexpiringcontract”

  21. Eric Says:

Stop blaming Lebron, you Cavs fans are delusional. The Cavs are badly coached and put together. James should have pulled a stevie francis on draft day

  22. Corporate Whore Says:

Your MVP voting is really dumb, douglar. Really, really dumb. I can see Kobe and Paul, they’re not better players (in the same class) but they are on better teams. But the other two? That’s just hating. Pure and simple. You only unearth yourself after losses or poor games by James. Over the WHOLE season, James has been great.

“his lack of aggressiveness the past few weeks is starting to hurt this team”…That’s a good point, but the fact is that without him, this team blows, so it’s hard to “blame” him for losses. The 4th quarter, he was terrible, but you can’t just discount a bad back. No can do.

BW is right. That missed dunk by Wallace was very symbolic of this season. And it was a huge play in the loss. Ben, Ben, Ben…

  23. Corporate Whore Says:

Doc, sounds like your friends are haters. That’s the way our offense is set up. I sure hope they’re not Kobe fans, because that would be very funny.

“Firing a cross court skip pass when you get triple teamed with the shot clock running down isn’t moving the ball.”

Huh? Of course it is. Especially when 9 times out of 10 he finds the open man. Open looks have never been a problem in the Lebron era. I’d rather trust the opinions of opposing coaches than fans of other teams. Why is he triple teamed? I wonder? If your comparing him to the great PG’s then of course he falls short. He’s not a PG.

You are right about the three point attempts, though. Remember Brown isn’t his boss, so he ain’t stopping him! That’s what makes Coach Brown a joke at times.

  24. Mike C Says:

Thoughts on the Cavs loss to the Bulls:

    - This team has been using excuses all year, from injuries to back-to-backs to the trade. And those things really are enough to justify some losses. But last night was a game they had no business losing, and they lost because they stopped executing. And instead of looking internally deciding they have to do more, they’ll blame it on outside factors. Again. That’s not going to change for the rest of the regular season.

    - Say what you will about Mike Brown, but he didn’t cause Ben to miss that dunk, and he didn’t cause Wally to miss that wide-open 12-footer. He didn’t go tell the team to stop guarding Hughes and Gordon. At some point the *players* are responsible for executing on the court, and the *players* didn’t do that in the second half last night. And Brown (maybe) drew up a fantastic last-second play that got Boobie Gibson wide open for a game-tying 3, which he clanked. I’m not going to blame Mike Brown for last night. The players mailed in the second half, and it burned them, plain and simple.

    - I know that the rotations seem questionable, but would someone like to show me the group of 7 guys who have brought it every night and executed at a high level? Brown is basically rolling the dice every night hoping that the group out there works. That has to be miserable as he tries to get the team ready for the playoffs. I know that I’ve been just as wishy-washy as Brown when it comes to deciding who can help the Cavs and who can’t. Sometimes Damon looks good, other times he’s getting abused by Chauncey Billups. Sometimes Devin Brown looks like the second-best scorer off the dribble on the team, other times he plays 29 minutes at gets 6 points. Wally went 10-8-2 last night, but against the Sixers he had 1 point. The fact is that Mike Brown has 2 starter-quality players on his bench in LeBron and Z, and the rest of the guys are supposed to be reserves in this league, because they are too inconsistent.

    - As for having Z in the game late last night, I would have perferred to see him in there, but the Cavs didn’t lose because of the offense last night.

    - I, like everyone else, am happy to see Larry Hughes playing for someone else. But I’m still not sure why we had to throw Gooden in for the privilege of taking on Ben Wallace. Joe Smith does not make up the difference.

    - Watching LeBron James for the first 4 months of the season was a treat. But he hasn’t been the same since the beginning of March. He looks like Tracy McGrady now, and that’s an insult to a player of LeBron’s caliber. Maybe he’s hurt, maybe he’s resting. But anyone who is saying that he’s not as much fun to watch right now is completely justified. Still, anyone who says, out of hand, that they don’t like watching LeBron James play is a) not watching him play, and b) is holding some kind of grudge.

    - But still, when was the last time you thought that LeBron was having a good time out there?

    Go Cavs.

    Mike C.

  25. Ricky Shade Says:

Brian, glad to see your starting to figure out Brown is a horrible coach. How can anyone explain our inbounds play to end the game? Are you kidding me! Anyone in the freaking gym can come up with an inbounds play better than that. Once again, it won’t be talked about because LeBron bailed his a&* out and got Boobie a wide open look. HORRIBLE COACH, PERIOD!

  26. alan t. Says:

During the summer, the Cavs might as well trade Snow and the pretty white boy for Zach Randolph. At this point, what’s the difference if they lend a helping hand to get the Knicks under the 2010 cap, it’s going to happen anyway. If bumblin’ Ferry doesn’t trade for Randolph, somebody else eventually will.

For the lonely who struggle with a premature dong, I stumbled across an old column with some sizzling hot tips from Delonte West on how to get a chick into the sack.

  27. doc Says:

You’re right MikeC, there is something different about Lebron over the past month or so. It’s called “disillusionment”, “frustration”, “Inability to look at ugly-ass Delonte West day after day”, “Boatshoes-itis”, “Newyorkophilia”, whatever you want to call it. The exciting thing is, the entire lovable cast of characters is back next season! Cavs 2008-09: The year Ben Wallace has a spoon inserted next to the giant fork in his back!

  28. Brittle_Fingers Says:

Good post, Temple Man. I couldn’t have said it any better myself. But I’ll try anyway…..

To say this loss was beyond inexcusable would be a huge understatement. The Chicago Bulls have nothing to play for. You have them down 17 in the second half in your own building. Sure, Larry Hughes and Ben Gordon started playing out of their minds…..but that’s when you exert your will on them, rather than watching them do it to you. If you have to, slam one of them to the floor with a hard foul. Let them know who’s going to win tonight…..let them know who’s boss.

There is absolutely no killer instinct on this team…..no heart. There hasn’t been for years. As Temple Man said, we’ve given up more points than we’ve scored this year…..that’s because we never blow anybody out. We play to the level of our competition, which means we always let them set the tempo and then try to match it. We’re PASSIVE.

I won’t even watch another game until the playoffs.

  29. Josh Says:

This is exactly what I’m talking about. Alan, if LeBron ends up wearing a New York Knicks jersey in our lifetime, I’ll buy your double-wide trailor for twice what it’s worth (insert handshake here). Who in their right mind would go play for THAT franchise? Their salary cap is destroyed until 2015, rumor has it Larry Brown is headed there to be the head coach, and Donnie Walsh is only slightly younger than George Burns at this point. Sure, perfectly valid place for LeBron to go, especially considering the collective bargaining agreement is set up for the Cavs to offer him the most money.

Spin doctor this thing all you want, Alan and clones, but until the Cavs fail to be competitive, LeBron is going nowhere. The Cavs have been in the playoffs consistently and the team is good enough to compete at a high level for years to come.

Last thing, another prediction: Mike Brown will be gone long before LeBron James….

  30. LeCavalier Says:

Speaking of Ben Wallets… Rumor has it that he’s tested positive for Geritol…

  31. Jay Says:

Sasha doesn’t play because he has been terrible. And he wanted a new contract. There are alot of delusional Cleveland players out there. Damon Jones should be playing though. I love how Brian wonders why Andy and Small Ben play at the same time. It’s because Brown can’t coach!

  32. alan t. Says:

Josh, two years ago, I posted that I would wager $1,000 with anybody out there who was that certain of himself, and we’d hold the money in a bank account until 2010. Not surprisingly, no takers for the bet. A lot of people talk garbage and trash with hateful posts, but when it comes to putting money where their mouth is, the silence is deafening.

$1,000, Josh. The Knicks or the Nets. There’s a team out there that will take Randolph, so I’m guessing it will end up being the Knicks, but it really doesn’t matter, does it? After all, you’re so sure of yourself. We’ll hold the money in an interest-bearing account.

I ain’t kidding here, and no cash for my big trailer is necessary. And if somebody like Rageaholic Rick wants to put money where his steaming personal attack bile is, I’ll pony up $1,000 for him, and for anybody else out there, too.

  33. Josh Says:

Even if you were serious, and there’s no way you are, considering we’re on a message board on the internet, I never said Brooklyn wasnt a possibility. If the Nets are in a position to contend in 2010, and the Cavs are not, he could very well bolt. It’s going to take a combination of things going sour here, and while it CERTAINLY isnt a foregone conclusion, it is possible.

The KNICKS, the initial topic of discussion (apparently you skip around), are an also-ran, has-been franchise. They are no longer relevant in the NBA landscape for the reasons I listed above, and when that Big Apple honk, David Stern, finally kicks the bucket, they’ll matter even LESS. That was the point. Any player who goes to New York in the next 3-4 years is a complete fool, and I dont believe that LeBron James is even a slight fool.

Back to your bluff… if I knew who you are (dont want to), and we had some sort of agreement drawn up, and if it would be for the Knicks, I would gladly take your last $1,000. However, the reason your bluster and half-measures were met with silence is simple; no person in their right mind places wagers over the internet. That and we’re all (maybe?) adults here, not teenagers on the schoolbus. So no matter what you say, you are kidding, and if not, well, how about just letting me hold the $1,000 until then?? I’ll take good care of it.

  34. alan t. Says:

Uhh… Josh. I’m not talking about wagers over the Internet, and it wasn’t and isn’t a bluff. Simple exchange of phone numbers through e-mail suffices. And as far as I know, no teenagers bet $1,000 on the school bus. Maybe a bag of pot, but not $1,000.

  35. Dale Says:

The Cavs will beat Orlando Saturday and suddenly the Cavs are the team no one wants to face in the playoffs again. Way too much drama here for one meaningless loss, folks. Relax. You probably gave up after the Cavs were down 0-2 against Detroit in the playoffs, but then maybe a little adversity in life cripples you; the winners take the hit, smile and get back up for another fight. We’ll still incredibly finish with about 46 wins, which is incredible with all that transpired–only about 4 less win than the last two years. Relax.
