Cavs 98, Bobcats 91
–This was a case study in how the Cavs hope to play in the playoffs. The idea is for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Ben Wallace to help each other out at both ends. It worked well for tonight, just the fourth time they have played together and the healthiest they have both been in awhile. With Z playing well on offense, he was able to punish the Bobcats for shading toward LeBron James. LeBron had 10 assists and five of them went to Z. Also, with Z attracting more attention as he goes for offensive boards, Wallace had more space to work and he got six of them. On defense, the help defense in the interior was good, especially with Wallace. He came from the weak side a lot, which helped him get 15 rebounds overall.
–The Cavs nearly got bit with Jason Richardson getting hot from the outside. If you remember, he had a 19-point quarter against the Cavs earlier this season. He had 14 in the fourth and several came over the hands of Devin Brown, whom I thought was playing good defense. In fact, other than a spurt or two, the Cavs played reasonable defense all night. But I also thought the Cavs offense got stagnant in the fourth, an old problem. LeBron got into a stretch where he was just tossing up shots, he went 2-of-8 in the fourth.
–After the game, we got to ask LeBron about DeShawn Stevenson’s comment from Thursday for the first time. If you are behind on this one, Stevenson told the Washington Post that James was “overrated” after he shut him down in the last minute of Thursday’s loss to the Wizards. Now, James had time to come up with something because we first asked before the game and he said he’d answer after it afterward. Here is what LeBron said:
“With DeShawn Stevenson it is kind of funny. It’s almost like Jay-Z saying something bad about Soulja Boy. There’s no comparison. Enough said.”
Ahem, this was supposed to be a slap and it is mildly funny. But even if you understand the Hip Hop references here, it’s not a fitting retort. I suppose that will have to come on the court at some point. LeBron is Jay-Z in this scenario and he is saying, as Jay-Z, he wouldn’t say something about a guy like Soulja Boy, who I guess LeBron is implying is second-rate. It would’ve been so much funnier if LeBron had said Vanilla Ice or Milli Vanilli. Am I dating myself? But it doesn’t much hold water since Soulja Boy’s song is played at every arena and LeBron himself has danced to the song on the bench during games. Two things I think come out of this: Stevenson laughs and Soulja Boy himself may be a little upset.
Recap:
Pregame
Starting lineups
Bobcats: Raymond Felton, Matt Carroll, Jason Richardson, Emeka Okafor, Nazr Mohammed
Cavs: Delonte West, Sasha Pavlovic, LeBron James, Ben Wallace, LeBron James EDIT: I mean, Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
Officials
Steve Javie, Tony Brothers, Pat Fraher
–Z is back after missing six games dealing with a bulging disc in his back. Supposedly, he will play his regular minutes. But Z is a rhythm player and has been throughout his career, so he may show some rust in this one.
–This is a good matchup to see how the Wallace/Z combination fare. Okafor will stay near the basket and be a prime part of the offense. It will be interesting to see how they help each other out.
–Watch out for Earl Boykins trying to prove a point to the Cavs today. He’ll be a tough cover for West or Damon Jones and I expect him to get up plenty of shots.
–The Bobcats have been playing pretty well of late, although they are simply a terrible road team. Richardson has been playing very well and Felton always seems to give the Cavs problems with his driving ability.
Halftime — Cavs 47, Bobcats 40
–You can already tell the major difference Zydrunas Ilgauskas makes for this team. Although it wasn’t a great offensive half, Z’s 10 points are a factor as are his three offensive rebounds. LeBron has six assists already and several are just playing the two-man game with Ilgauskas. It opens up the offensive options.
–The Cavs also did a nice job of playing defense in the second quarter after a rough start. They are allowing a little too much penetration, but they toughened up after Mike Brown called two timeouts to try and snap them into shape. Those defense lulls continue to be a major issue with his new version of the team.
–I am keeping a little ledger in my head of Wally Szczerbiak and Sasha. There is a competition between these two to win minutes when Daniel Gibson gets back. So far in this one, neither have done much at all.
–Notice the Cavs went to Joe Smith a lot more in the post in the first half. They liked the matchup I am sure, but I just think more plays need to be run for him in general and not just kick outs for 18 footers. The guy is the best scoring option in the post after Z.
Postgame
Stars
LeBron, 33 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds
Z, 16 points, nine rebounds
Wallace, 15 rebounds
Richardson, 33 points
Quotes:
LeBron on Z: “It’s a treat for me to get him back and for all the rest of our bigs. They know they can open it up with Z being out there.”
Wallace: ” “I don’t know if a lot of people know but once your back starts acting up and it is not loose and right, it causes your whole body to pretty much shut down. It’s a little bit looser and I’m trying to feel my way through it.”

Cavs: Delonte West, Sasha Pavlovic, LeBron James, Ben Wallce, LeBron James
Glad to see our cloning experiment finally worked.
“Cavs: Delonte West, Sasha Pavlovic, LeBron James, Ben Wallce, LeBron James”
Great! With two Lebrons there’s no way we’re losing this one…
That was the first thing I noticed, too. Pretty funny. But for full disclosure, he should have typed James’ name five times.
Did anybody else read the apologist nonsense in the newspaper about the number of Cavs games missed because of injury? If Lance Allred had signed a one-year contract and then missed the season because Mike Tyson had munched on Lance’s ears, Windy would somehow find a clever way to add 82 to the number of games in the Cavs’ “injury-riddled” season.
Somebody please tell me with a straight face that the Count’s and Blimpy Marshall’s missed games are a valid argument for anything other than an argument that local sportswriters are biased and allow their biases to be reflected in their writing. Come on, Brian.
How about Ben Wallets’ 8 rebounds and 2 missed WIDE OPEN dunks at it’s only half time. Oh, that’s right, Ben’s not in rhythm yet…
Hey, is the Cavs game being shown on FSN Ohio? I was looking to watch the game, on my cable system’s FSN Ohio was The Best Damn Sports Show Period, or whatever the show is called, a bunch of video clips of the 50 most outrageous sports moments.
Anyone know what’s going on with Szczerbiak? I mean everyone keeps saying the shots will fall but isn’t it a bit of an extended cold spell by now? Any cause for concern?
Word is that Wally took over Larry’s old locker. Unfortunately, he’s been filling Larry’s shoes and then some.
I wouldnt be too concerned about Wally just yet… not with Sasha back, Damon playing well, Devin playing well… this team is 10-11 quality players deep when Gibson makes his return.
Not to cloud all of our reckless negativity with any optimism or anything, but there were glimmers tonight where our interior defense was tough to contend with. I think all the Z haters are going to end up rather quiet very soon, now that he has some muscle next to him in the starting lineup instead of Gooden’s learning disabled a$$.
This is a big week for the Cavs. The 3 seed isnt out of the question, nor is another 50 win season. The schedule looks nice down the stretch and the roster is healing up. Right on schedule.
Oh boy, Dan Gilbert is in the booth again. Gag!!!!!!!!!! Get him out of there.
Is it just me, or is Ben Wallace averaging about two MISSED dunks per game? He keeps bouncing the ball off the back of the rim when he tries to dunk it. Hello? We are paying $15 million a year for what exactly?
15 million a year for the 15 rebounds he got tonight, and the toughness on defense. not for points. as simple as that
Szerbiak’s ongoing struggles mirror the other so-called “shooting experts” who can’t buy a bucket once they enter The Gund / The Q. Jiri Welsch, Larry Hughes, (until recently) Damon Jones, Donyell.
In most of the other cases, they NEVER found their shot.
There are slumps, then there are all-out disasters. And Wally is showing all signs of the latter. He is not helping the Cavs at ALL right now.
Yeah, Josh! You go, girl! Jump! Jump! Spread those legs! Wave those pom-poms! But holy Christ, shave those armpits!!!
Jay-Z is one of the greatest, most consistent rappers of all-time. Soulja Boy lucked out and got one hit record. It’s a perfect analogy. LBJ is still the king.
I am happy to report that the trial separation between the Cavs and myself is going well. I didn’t watch a second of tonight’s game and it appears that both me and the team benefited: They won and I didn’t waste my night writing rants that nobody really cares about. This could be a winning formula for the remainder of the season.
HAHA he called him Soulja Boy
Point LeBron.
It sucks we don’t play the Wizards again this year.
If the wireless Google at the arena wasn’t working, I’m guessing the plethora of pasty white reporters at James’ locker had to ask Branson Wright to translate.
I am overwhelmed with joy to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jay-Z.
Biff – it’s just the regular season man. You write some good stuff. Don’t stop posting just because the Cavs went through a rough spell. They had plenty of rough spots last year and they made it to the finals.
The comparison works because Soulja is terrible while Jay-Z is one of the greatest ever.
this board sucks, im going to play some kickball.
Let me clarify it for you Brian.
Jay Z = Legend with success over a decade
Soulja Boy = Crappy flavor of the month who wont be around next year.
whatever, deshawn stevenson. you don’t even have one of the top 3 beards in the eastern conference, so shut your mouth.
and by the way, it’s totally out of line for someone to be posting under the name “frank stallone”. unless that happens to be the real frank stallone, in which case it’s an honor to share this message board with you, sir.
I am impressed with Windhorst’s hip hop knowledge. LeBron had days to come up with an answer and he dissapointed me for the reasons that Windhorst pointed out. Anybopdy else miss half the Detroit game cause ABC was showing infomercials? I didn’t have any problems with FSN.
Sidenote- Jay-Z used to be better when you make money you get comfortable, but I still don’t understand why now when he raps he sounds like he’s holding his breath…
The wireless was good enough for Brian to look up a few rappers on Wikipedia. Although, it’s clear his knowledge of Milli Vannilli and Vanilla Ice is his own. I don’t know whether to be impressed, horrified or surprised at his didacticism and musical pedantry. At any rate, Brian’s blog makes the terribly written Branson Wright column about this incident superfluous. Although, if Mr.Wrong didn’t steal the scoop from Brian then he would’ve stolen it from Hoopshype.com
It is quite an honor to be dissed by the one and only, Frank Stallone. It’ll also be quite an honor to hear what some panic stricken posters on this site have to say when this team finally gets healthy and knocks the Celtics out of the playoffs in round 2. Looking forward to that.
Thoughts on the Cavs win over the Bobcats:
- 7 in a row at home is always good. Keep sending the fans home happy. Another fantastic performance by LeBron is just icing.
- You have to like the production we saw out of all of the bigs with Z back. I really think fewer minutes will lead to more efficiency from all of these guys.
- If you are the type to complain about Mike Brown’s rotation, watch Szczerbiak’s minutes. It would take some serious intestinal fortitude to sit the $13 Million shooter your GM traded for at the deadline, but if yesterday is any indication, that’s about to happen. Unless Wally can take the lid off the basket, he’s going to be the odd man out come playoff time.
- Jason Richardson = Ricky Davis with a better college pedigree? Or am I being to hard on him?
Go Cavs. I’m really looking forward to tonight’s game.
Mike C.
This will be our starting 5 in the Playoffs…
Z
Wallace
Lebron
West
Boobie
Hate to say it, but no way we get by Detroit this time. THey are looking TOUGH and DEEP. They will not allow Lebron to win the series singlehandedly like they did last year…gaurantee they will be studying the video of the Spurs sweeping us.
brian , it’s quite clear you do not listen to hip hop , lebron’s analogy was on point . jay z is a legend , a wordsmith . soulja boy is lyrically challenged , he’s garbage , he just happen to have a catchy song that was complete garbage to me .
