Cavs 109, Grizzlies 89
–This game was almost like a feel-good practice. The new guys all played well in their own way and the fans were able to greet them. The Grizzlies didn’t put up much of a fight at the start. It reminded me of the game against the Pacers in December when Anderson Varejao played his first game and LeBron James came back from his injury and Larry Hughes made like every shot.
–The biggest thing you can take from this was how well the front line looked. LeBron, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace and Joe Smith combined for 73 points and 36 rebounds. Wallace was able to get plenty of open looks for dunks, which is all you want him to take, and they dominated around the glass. Then again, you aren’t going to be facing the likes of Kwame Brown and Darko Milicic every night. But, Anderson Varejao isn’t in the picture either. The Cavs are banking on that front line to be a massive strength and it showed promise out of the gate.
–Wally Szczberiak wasn’t always in the right place, but he hit a couple 3s. If this is an average game for him, he’s an addition. When he gets going he may have a 30-point night.
–Delonte West missed a lot of shots, he went 2-of-12. He’s having a terrible shooting year, which is one of the reasons the Sonics chose to move him of their point guards. However, he did have six assists and three steals. Want to know what Larry Hughes’ season-high in assists was? Six.
–We will know more about this team after Wednesday when they play in Boston. There are signs there that this could really work out, but I need to see so much more. So this was an easy first step, let’s see what happens next.
–Dan Gilbert spoke to the media before the game. Here’s the best of what he had to say:
“I thought it was pretty important to do something. We got to the Finals with this team, but the competition got harder and it was going to be a bigger challenge than last year. We are trying to build something here. You pay $375 million for a franchise and then break even for a couple years, you can’t start getting cheap now. It’s a big commitment, but before we even look at money we look at what is right basketball wise first. If you do it money first, you may start getting (the front office) gun shy even thinking of ideas.
Recap:
Pregame
Starting lineups
Grizzlies: Mike Conley, Juan Carlos Navarro, Rudy Gay, Hakim Warrick, Kwame Brown
Cavs: Delonte West, Devin Brown, LeBron James, Ben Wallace, Zydrunas Ilgauskas
–West and Brown in the backcourt does NOT give the Cavs a lot of shooting in the backcourt. Not too far off from the Eric Snow/Larry Hughes days if you ask me. But this is just a trial. Wally Szczerbiak will get major minutes off the bench. The problem I see is that if you play Wally with Damon Jones you are going to have some defensive issues. We’ll see, lots to learn over the next few games.
–Mike Miller and Anderson Varejao are out tonight.
–Let’s see how Mike Brown uses his frontcourt rotation. How much he plays Big Ben and Z together and how many minutes Joe Smith gets. I for one think there’s going to be some playing time issues with the bigs when Andy gets back. Someone’s minutes are getting slashed a bit.
–Overall, there’s a lot of excitement here. I expect the performance to be uneven, which is why it is fortunate the Cavs are playing one of the worst teams in the league.
Halftime — Cavs 59, Grizzlies 38
–I am tempted to throw out much of what you see tonight because the Cavs are sort of playing on emotion and the Grizzlies are so horrible.
–However, there are some things you can tell that will last past tonight. Opposing teams are going to pull their 4s out and force Ben Wallace away from the basket when they can. To me, this transition will be interesting for him. But Wallace is so much better defending the high pick-and-roll than Ilgauskas because he’s so much quicker. He’s trying pretty hard tonight, too. He had a steal on the first play of the game and made some othe defensive plays.
–West is very active on defense and he pushes the ball big time. This could be a major upgrade. I have said for some time that they Cavs would benefit from just having a point guard who has good instincts in setting up easy offense. That was not a strongsuit of anyone before, even when LeBron did it he looked to score first, which is what you want. But you want someone running and setting stuff up, which West is showing a little bit tonight.
–Wally Szczerbiak looks like he’s not comfortable with wear his shots are coming from just yet. That’ll take a bit. Joe Smith was very solid in the first half, he was 4-of-4 and had a couple rebounds.
–No one is paying attention, but Devin Brown and Damon Jones are really playing well. Devin had six assists in the half and Damon’s hot shooting is continuing.
–It won’t matter tonight, but man the Grizz are stubborn in how they guard LeBron. They played him 1-on-1 last month and he lit them up for 51. They are doing it again tonight.
Postgame
Stars
LeBron, 25 points, seven rebounds, 11 assists
Ilgauskas, 22 points, 13 rebounds
Wallace, 12 points, 10 rebounds
Hakim Warrick, 21 points, nine rebounds
Quotes:
LeBron: “Ben’s ability to get up and rebound and throw down dunks (showed his potential),” James said. “He’s rejuvenated.”
Joe Smith: “This might have been the first time in a long time I got chills when I took the court. When we ran out on the court for warm-ups the crowd reaction and how they accepted us, I kind of got goose bumps.”

Biff…
Sorry. I forgot it was an all-Cavs ugly squad. Now, if I could just remember whether Derrick Chievous was good-looking or not.
I wonder what is left in Gilberts budget now for the halftime
shows. Could it be Finnegan and Windy doing Dancing with
the Stars or better yet as the opening band for the Bucket
Boys? Or how about Damona doing cartwheels over the
scorers table with Mercado chasing after him like a Duchess
in heat? Or Delonte redoing his tattoos for the next episode
of Cops? Any thoughts Mr. Grinch?
Biff-nice find of that Edgar Jones photo!
Was I right or was I right on that one?!!
You were right. That was the only picture I could find. There aren’t nearly as many Edgar Jones galleries out there as one might think. This seems to be another case of the media’s anti-Cleveland bias causing one of our great athletes to be slighted.
By the way, if any of you want some high comedy, go over to truehoop and read the Kobe vs. Lebron article.
Hi from a Cav fan in Montana.
Anyone read the current Adrian Wojnarowski article, “Ties that Bind” re James and his ties to Jay -Z ?
What are the thoughts?
I’d really like to hear Brian Windhorst’s comments on that one.
Biff, Edgar Jones was one mad dog, some of the nastiest dunks I’ve ever seen. By the time he got to Cleveland, he was a little washed up, but he had some spectacular moments before he got to Cleveland, both offensively and defensively. I once saw him shatter a backboard. One ugly crazy toothless dude, especially the times he let his afro fly. Coulda played for the Blue Jackets in the 70s.
And Terry Pluto’s Hair, I stand by my comment that I was the first guy to refer to Pavlovic as “Dracula” in this blog. With that said, doc is correct, the Count from Sesame Street looks suspiciously like him, too. At least Pavlovic’s most recent sabbatical has been productive.

I read both articles mentioned. The LeBron vs. Kobe just shows how the MVP is silly. LeBron is better in every statistical category and the writer from LA pretty much says that if Kobe doesn’t win it it will be the biggest crime in human history.
The Jay-Z article to me is just more anti-cleveland bullshit. I would like to hear what Brian has to say about the subject though.
Bob Montana……..please realize that the National media wants and is intent on portraying LeBron James as moving to a big market precisely since that is what they want. They are letting their emotion overide the facts.
Facts are that there is NOTHING that points to LeBron leaving……not Jay Z, not Stephen A. Smith’s lame rumors, et al. The only concrete thing we know is that LeBron is finalizing a $25Million dollar home (which wouldn’t be easy to sell) in Akron and that his mother resides locally. While none of that means necessarily he is leaving, neither does inane articles featuring Jay Z bouncing along with Beyonce.
Get a grip……..Stephen A. Smith doesn’t make LeBron’s decisions.
LeBron can rent out the house for parties. Just because a guy is building a house somewhere doesn’t mean it’s his home. A lot of the wealthier dudes have multiple residences, if they’re not simply renting out the Ritz, like Manny Ramirez is.
The Knicks and Nets being such an outright embarrassment is the worst possible thing for Cleveland, and Jay-Z along with Beyonce’s big fake melons aren’t much of a factor. The Nets had seemed to make perfect sense, but the Knicks obviously are back in the mix. If anybody doesn’t think that the NBA office won’t be making a swarming full-court press on LeBron, his people and his corporate partners to head east, they’re smoking something. There’s too much money at stake, and I doubt neither the 36-year-old Ben Wallace nor the 35-year-old Z are going to hypnotize him either way.
Hey Brian:
Any word on us making any roster moves or getting involved in any of the bigger names that may become available (Flip Murray, Sam Cassell, Jamall Magloire, Brent Barry etc.)?
Or are we going to roll with the NBDL guys?
I think Newble can play the 3 on the all-uggo team.
I can’t believe I’m writing this, but has anyone else thought that if the Cavs were to win a championship in the next couple years, Lebron might actually be LESS inclined to stay when his contract is up?
I honestly wonder if he’d feel less guilty about leaving his hometown team. Kind of like, “Hey, I won you guys a championship. I have nothing else to accomplish here. See you in Brooklyn.”
Now, before you tools get all pissed off and accuse me of complaining about the possibility of the Cavs winning a title, please take a deep breath, relax, and give careful consideration to the following things:
1. I would love it if the Cavs won a championship. I’m not suggesting otherwise, and
2. I’m kinda drunk right now.
Food for thought.
Can we now nominate Z, Count, and Waldo for the
Mokeskie award or must they be retired.

According to ESPN.com’s Trade Machine, LeBron will come off the books the same season as Wallace and Z. If this is correct, that would mean that there will be a great deal of money to re-sign LeBron, and there would be a significant amount remaining to sign another marquee player. Also, we’ll have a bunch of players coming off the books at the end of next year (up to $33 million), so another premium player could be signed from those expiring contracts.
I’m not saying it’s impossible that LeBron would leave, just that the financial and personnel pieces are in place to keep him.
Hey, hey Alan T. , leave Beyonce out of this one…
Also, Alan you should google “Sasha Pavlovic Dracula”. Funny stuff…
- I agree that LeBron will be more inclined to leave if the Cavs win a Championship between now and 2010. While I don’t expect much loyalty from my athletes, I do think LeBron really wants to bring the first Championship to Cleveland in half a century. If he thinks the Cavs are close, then I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes another 3-year contract to stay in Cleveland, knowing he can always force his way out if he wants. But if he wins a title, I think he’ll feel free to expand his empire and go to a bigger market.
- Still, the NBA finds ways to get its players into the markets it wants. So the Lakers magically get Pau Gasol while Kobe is still relevant. Boston gets Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Miami gets bailed out of the Shaq contract in the same year they are actively tanking to get Michael Beasley. There’s no doubt in my mind that LeBron will end up in New York while he’s still in the prime of his career. It just might be when he’s 28 instead of when he’s 25.
- I can put up with quite a bit, but disparaging the authenticity of Beyonce’s physique crosses a line.
If Lebron is leaving, the fans can’t change it. Perhaps not even Danny Ferry can. As a result, I would suggest enjoying the next two years of the greatest player on the planet playing in Cleveland to their fullest. Better to take it all in while we have it than waste our energy worrying about a future that we can’t control.
That’s an interesting point.
LeBron has always made clear he wants to be considered at the level of a Tiger or MJ and the only way he could do that in Cleveland would be in a dynasty scenario with the Cavs winning five or six championships.
And some championships would probably have to be in a row. The Spurs have never won back to backs, and even though Duncan’s got four rings, it’s just not the same as Magic and the Lakers, MJ and the Bulls or Bird and the Celtics. It’s not fair but it’s true.
If LeBron thinks the team’s on the verge of dynasty-like domination, he might stay. If not, I kinda doubt it.
I think Lebron wants to win championships as his first priority. If he thinks he can win them (or more) in Cleveland when his contract is up, why wouldn’t he stay? It’s not like he is having trouble being a global icon playing for Cleveland. No other team can offer Lebron as much $ as the Cavs. Gilbert & Ferry will do everything possible to keep Lebron. Franchise value goes down the minute Lebron leaves. Okay, I am really just trying to convince myself he will stay be drinkyond 2010. It’s all just speculation, LBJ doesn’t even know he is going to decide in 2 years. Here’s hoping Lebron’s era in Cleveland can match Jordan’s era in Chicago. Sorry, I have to stop drinking before posting.
Not sure what happened to this sentence in post above:
“Okay, I am really just trying to convince myself he will stay be drinkyond 2010.
should read:
“Okay, I am really just trying to convince myself he will stay beyond 2010.”
I think my cat’s paw hit my mouse pad, moving my cursor…
Your cat’s paw hit the mouse pad, moved your cursor AND spelled out the word “drink”?? That is one talented cat.
