Take deep breaths as deadline nears

Posted February 21st, 2008 by bwindhorst

Woke up this morning to an explosion of e-mails about the potential trade I reported the Cavs were thinking about last night. It is important to point out that the Cavs and many NBA teams have discussions about big trades all the time. Obviously they intensify around the deadline as teams get serious about shaking up their roster. The Cavs are no different. The rumors that I have heard may only represent 10 percent of what the Cavs are thinking/talking about. I talk to various people from various teams across the league, I don’t have sources in every organization and the information I bring to you is the best and most credible I can find. The overall chances of a “blockbuster deal” — and boy has that term been devalued a little in the NBA over the last couple weeks — are still less than 50/50 in my opinion.

As a Cavs fan what you need to know is that the front office is honestly looking at trying to make a deal to improve the team. That is the real reason why I decided to write the story about them considering a major deal. They are not simply standing pat as I hear them often being accused of. And not just for the top available players in the Jason Kidd/Mike Bibby class. They are trying to get creative and trying to balance out the short term and long-term benefits. Let me also add something else, I think the Cavs do like the team they have now. And that comes from players, from coaches and from the front office. If there is nothing done the Cavs still feel like they have a shot to beat anyone if they can get fully get healthy. LeBron James of course would like to get better and that is not original thinking, who wouldn’t? But he’s also made it clear he likes his teammates, so remember that if nothing happens by 3 p.m.

One more thing just to calm some of the waters. I have not once heard Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ name come up in a trade rumor this season. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t come up in trade talks, but he is not part of the potential deal I was talking about. However, Z and the Cavs do have a little issue going on behind the scenes about him playing for the Lithuanian national team.

Take deep breaths as deadline nears…

Bookmarked your post over at Blog Bookmarker.com!…

  2. Brent Says:

Good work Brian. Boy, dropping that trade nugget less than 24 hrs before the deadline sure did get the masses fired up. Thanks for keeping the Cavalier faithful informed. It would be nice to be able to make a deal that allows us to get better without losing any valuable pieces. However, I agree that our team as it stand, when healthy of course, will be dangerous for ANY team come May/June.

  3. Kardiac Keith Says:

Good post. I am glad Z isn’t going anywhere. Hes the man

  4. MSW Says:

Brian - if it doesn’t go down, will you at least let us know what players from the opposing team were involved?

  5. thecrowning Says:

good god, then dont report it…

  6. doc Says:

Why is important to “know that the front office is honestly trying to make a deal to improve the team”? Who cares. Isn’t that why Boatshoes has a multimillion dollar contract? Isn’t that his job? That needs to be reinforced? That he’s “trying real hard”? Give me a break. These desperate attempts to shill for the front office are beneath you.

  7. larry d. Says:

Good question doc. We’re all aware Ferry’s been working the phones since forever.

I am wondering if the Lithuanian team has a point guard or shooter they might trade.

Brian, I love ya, but do you work in the Cavs’ PR dept. or for a newspaper? I mean, I know if the Cavs do well, you do well, but come on…

If it’s not going to happen, what’s the point in talking about it?

  10. heathmalc Says:

The reason a first round pick is needed is so that the Cavaliers can trade their pick, and the one they recieve in-trade, along with a certain Cavs player for a member of an inter-divisional player.

  11. Jon Says:

i’m disappointed - the way he spoke about it earlier made it seem much more concrete. i was so excited, i even dreamed about it! now it looks like once agaiin typical cleveland disappointment.

  12. mike Says:

Brian, what kind of feedback do you expect to happen when you blog that you aren’t even paying attention to an important game because the Cavs are working on a blockbuster trade?

Why report it if you can’t offer any details or can even substantiate it?

  13. Chris Says:

Hey Brian, if this mystery trade does happen, how will it effect the Cavs opportunities to improve this summer. Could they be giving away too many valuable assets for a quick fix now, or do you think that they still would have enough “bullets” to continue to improve later. Thanks man.

  14. Tyrone Drake Says:

    Brian,

If the so callled trade does not go down, I still would like to know what it could have possibly been. Thanks!!

  15. brett Says:

thanks - i dont know why everyones flipping out. hearing that a blockbuster is in the works pumps me up!! enjoy the day

  16. brendan Says:

I was so pumped I could hardly sleep last night….but now it appears to just be the routine rumors swirling around the deadline.

It is easy to hate on Windy b/c it looks like he is just trying to credit Ferry’s efforts–but he wasn’t lying. The cavs were talking blockbuster deal, and he was reporting it. He never said it is like about to be official or anything…he just said Ferry was active…I hope even if we do nothing we can find out who this proposed deal involved!

  17. mike Says:

This is just a PR stunt.

  18. MSW Says:

If the trade doesn’t go thorugh and Windhorst doesn’t back it up with some of the potential details, like which opposing player it was, then I will forever be skeptical of Windhorst playing patsy for Ferry here just so it looks like Ferry is doing something when really he isn’t.

  19. thall Says:

Some of you all are too emotional.LOL Thanks for the info….BW.

I’m going to roll with the Cavs trade or not. To be where they are now….given all the injuries they’ve had is a testament to Lebron, the coaching staff, and the rest of the team. Have they lost some games they should have won…sure. Have they stolen a few….sure have. It’s the ups and downs that go with an injury riddled team this time of year in the NBA.

  20. ricky Says:

i like the team the cavs have right now too. its good enough when everyone is healthy to make it back to the finals, even if i dont think they can win it b/c the west is just so competitive right now. but next year they will have the pieces to go out and make some deals to make this roster better so if we are patient, next year could be really special. or it could suck, if ferry cant pull the trigger. either way, shit will go down next year. can’t wait to hear who was in this trade

  21. Pepe Says:

BW. If you aren’t going to report the trade rumor then don’t report anything.

This whole thing was kind of classless on your part, IMO. Plus the shill job for Danny Ferry only worsens it.

  22. Unreal Says:

I can’t believe you’d stoop this low for a PR stunt. It’s easy to say there’s a 50/50 chance of the Cavs making a big trade. It’s win/win for you. Ferry’s a joke and so are you.

  23. Mechie Says:

Understand something, no matter how much Big Z is loved in Cleveland nobody else wants Z on their team. You dont have to worry, Z will finish his career in a Cavs uniform, the game has changed so much to an uptempo game that a big slow footed center isn’t wanted anymore. You can give Z away>

  24. Here...nothing! Says:

As unpopular as Ferry is, Windhorst is going to take a credibility hit if nothing goes down. You don’t create a buzz like this for a GM who is pretty much universally viewed as inert and inept like Ferry, and then not have him take you down with him when it all ends up being much ado about nothing.

Personally, I find it pretty curious that Windhorst is the only person reporting all of these supposedly hot rumors. Granted, the PD’s Cavs coverage blows chunks, so I’d fully expect any two-bit news outlet to scoop them, but no other local or national outlet is reporting that Ferry is doing anything today.

For Windy’s sake, he’d better hope something happens, or he’s going to look like Ferry’s personal PR department. Sorry, but stories about how he really, really, really, honestly, truly tried to make a deal just aren’t going to cut it with this fan base anymore.

  25. Biff Says:

You can’t get on Windhorst’s case for not reporting the details of the trade. If his league sources told him he couldn’t leak the details, he doesn’t really have a choice. Burning bridges with your sources is not a good way to good future info. Even though it stinks to know that SOMETHING is going on without knowing exactly what it is, wouldn’t you all prefer that to dead silence?

I doubt this deal is going through just based on the lack of additional info this morning. My best guess would be Milwaukee but who knows.

  26. craig Says:

    since when don’t reporters REPORT!!!

we want details brian! You make Rick Bucher and Marc Stein look good!

  27. Cedric Says:

Yeah, nobody wants a big slowfooted center anymore. Especially Phoenix. They didn’t want one so badly that they gave up a perennial allstar for Shaq’s corpse.

  28. craig Says:

i have season tickets for sale, every game, below face value center court…shout me a hollar and ill give u my email if anyone is interested.

section 225, row 14, seats 13 and 14….reallly reallly great seats for only $35 face each but i will always sell them for $30…

  29. craig Says:

I can email the tickets too !

  30. cavs1616 Says:

I always enjoyed Brian Windhorst’s articles that I have read in the past. They all seem to have relatively concrete information, yet I rarely come across any story where it seems BW does not give all the details he knows. Hence, I figured this was decent info. As all, I hope he can at least say what this “blockbuster trade” could have been. It is like saying the US satelite that was shot down last night is going to land on the White house, and the next day you find out it is a white shack located on a deserted island.

  31. Zack Says:

Lots of hating going on. Brian did what Brian does, and that is report on what’s happening behind the scenes to the best of his ability. If he can’t disclose who the players are in the trade due to exposing his sources, he can’t disclose them. If he was able to, he would.

    He is no hypebeast.

Just about 3 hours left to find out what may happen.

Houston just traded Bonzi Wells and Mike James to New Orleans for Bobby Jackson. This is more in line with the type of move I expect the Cavs to make.

Man, Bonzi Wells would have been a nice pickup for the Cavs. Not sure why either of these teams would make a move in the Conference that could come back to haunt them in the playoffs…

  35. J Beanie Says:

All interesting stuff. Just like last year. Ferry will work and work and work but when it comes to pulling the trigger, he won’t. I don’t know if it’s because he can’t or if he just can’t get the right pieces in place have the other team so OK, pull the trigger Danny. I’m not expecting a “blockerbuster” but I do but Ferry gets some minor deal done along the lines of a Flip Murrar-type deal.

Craig- I’d be very interested in some of those tickets. Leave me a comment on my website (jbeaniesports.wordpress.com) or send me an email (bhovey15@yahoo.com). Thanks man.

re·port - an account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc

BW is NOT reporting. He’s rumormongering and, as many have stated, he’s doing it so we all see how hard Ferry is trying. It stinks of PR.

BW, either willingly or unwittingly, is being used by the Cavs front office to spin the Company Line.

BW’s actions of the past 24 hours are antithetical to real reporting. And he should be ashamed.

  38. Glutton for punishment Says:

Who would wants Cavs stiffs? Unless Ferry can drug somebody, I’d rather he do nothing.

  39. Wow Says:

Hey Brian - When the trade doesn’t go down at 3, will you tell us what they were talking about?

  40. Scott Says:

Why all the hate? Perhaps Windhorst should have refrained from blogging about a potential deal if he couldn’t really report more than serious discussions. Fair enough. But I don’t think he’s a shill for Ferry.

Further, fans who think Ferry is deemed an inept GM are sadly mistaken. We all want to improve the team and keep LeBron. Our free agents didn’t work out as we’d hoped but none of those signings — Hughes, Jones or Marshall — were especiallt egregious at the time. I saw Hughes play in person in DC on a dozen occasions, and I was glad when the Cavs signed him.

I think fans resent Ferry for not sharing much publicly, but it’s premature to condemn him. For my part I’m relieved we didn’t sign Bibby or Kidd — but wish we’d taken a better shot at Gasol. That said, everyone thinks the Griz gave Pau away.

As the team stands now, we can still compete for a title, if we’re healthy.

  41. mike Says:

Brian, I’m looking foward to your article tomorrow where you talk about ‘how hard’ Ferry tried to pull off a deal.

  42. ryguy Says:

great job to get are hopes up then let it all come crashing down

  43. Kevin Says:

My question is how was nobody else in the media able to pick up this mystery man rumor? Honestly, I’ve never vheard of a more vague rumor. “Sources tell me the Cavs are having a serious discussions about a blockbuster deal.” What kind of garbage is that? Brian better tell us who this player was after the deadline or else something really sishy happened. (John McCain’s scandal has nothing on this mother!)

  44. Hilla Says:

I heard that David Aldrige (ESPN.com) reported that the “secret player’ is Shawn Marion of the Heat.

I’ve never heard of a trade rumor where the player’s name had to be kept secret. Very strange. I’m sure nothing will happen though…..and the only reason I say that is because Danny Ferry has NEVER made anything happen. I don’t buy the argument that we don’t have the right pieces to make a deal. Everyone’s making deals. Dallas traded a guy that’s retired. I mean, c’mon. Enough of making apologies. Let’s get something done.

  45. Marc Says:

    * Chances that the Cavs will make a blockbuster trade according to BW - 50/50

    * Actual chance that the Cavs will make a blockbuster trade - 0 (zero)

    * Chance that Ferry is spreading dirty rumors to get the fans on his side for one day - 100%

    * Chance that the fans will turn on Ferry when the Cavs fail to make even a minor deal - 100%

  46. jim Says:

Danny Ferry is working non-stop for the next two hours trying to make a trade to bring the ENTIRE dream team here to Cleveland for Eric Snow, who is a hot commodity due to his lockdown defense (see last years finals, Parker, Tony).

I agree with all those who say why are we even talking about this? Maybe if ONE Cavs rumor had come through in the past how many years, it would have a little credibility, but why hype up potential deals that likely will never hapen? I read about Pao like the day he was headin to LA, not three weeks prior. Kidd reports came out correctly like an hour before he would have been there. But we have a year-long rumor mill rolling claiming everyone and their uncles are coming here but no one has. Especially a god-darned PG. Cmon it has been years.

  47. dc Says:

ESPN may have just outted BW’s alleged blockbuster:

SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:24 PM ET ) Maybe … call was about Ben Wallace in a possible deal with the Cavs. I’ve got to stress that it was from what I’d call a third party source … not someone directly involved in the negotiations. So … take it with a grain of salt … but interesting …

SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:25 PM ET ) The deal as I heard it … by the way … had Drew Gooden, Ira Newble, Shannon Brown and Cederic Simmons coming back to Chicago.

  48. Eric Says:

Lebron really should demand a trade this summer. He’ll never even get close to being on a good team if he stays in Ohio.

  49. Biff Says:

If Danny Ferry is even DISCUSSING Ben Walace right now instead of pursuing trades that could potentially help the Cavs, he should be fired on the spot. With 90 minutes left to the deadline, if he is in talks to take on one of the 5 worst contracts in the game and a player for whom the Cavs would have ABSOLUTELY NO USE, he is an idiot and should be fired. Just talking about this deal at this time would be inexcusable.

  50. Greg Says:

Here are the details of the blockbuster:

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=1711~356~601~2506~383~1017&teams=18~18~25~5~5~5&te=&cash=

  51. Kevin Says:

Ok, now the rumor is that the mystery man was indeed….. Ben Wallace!? Apparently the supposed deal would send Drew Gooden, Ira Newble, Shannon Brown and Cedric Simmons to the Bulls. I like this deal under only one condition, that being the acquisition of a point guard. I believe this is what they’re trying to do, considering how BW mentioned a possible other deal. Interesting…

  52. Groddo Says:

  57. Brad Says:

    Brian,

It seems as if the Cavs are working harder to tell everyone they are trying, rather than trying to make a deal. I’ve read your blog, heard you on the radio and hear Fred Mcleod on the radio saying the same thing. Let’s face it, Ferry is afraid to pull the trigger. We “tried” for a year to get Mike Bibby and couldn’t get it done. Everyone keeps saying that, when healthy, this is a team that went to the finals last year. It’s time to realize that Lebron does not going to stick around just to make it to the Finals. Every year we need to do whatever we can to have a team that can WIN the title.

  58. Chuck Says:

No way it was Marion - the agent connection with Varejao is well documented.

For the record, I see no reason to doubt BW or his source. Ferry has certainly made offers for A Miller, M Miller, Gasol, Kidd, & Garnett, don’t you think? He just hasn’t pulled any of those deals off. That’s the real issue - can (or should) Ferry complete a trade. Complaining that BW is “shilling” or Ferry is “spreading rumours” are kind of silly, and monumentally more speculative than anything BW has ever reported, and mostly just a reflection of the tired old defeatist Cleveland attitude - we couldn’t possibly be working on some big trade, because our boatshoes GM is a lousy negotiator and doesn’t do anything but surf for porn and overpay free agents. Yawn.

  59. Chuck Says:

now the word is that it’s Ben Wallace….

  60. Chuck Says:

    or Szczerbiak….

  61. Mike Says:

    Sounds like Ben Wallace…..

  62. Mike Says:

We’d still nee a good shooter if the bulls deal goes through

  63. ricky Says:

if they could pull a small deal for someone like delonte west, that would be nice. wouldn’t have to give up much and we get a young point guard talent. a blockbuster just seems so unlikely

  64. Groddo Says:

  65. Mike Says:

Szczerbiak would be nice, if he could stay healthy!

  66. Hilla Says:

58 minutes to go, and nothing has happened. What a surprise.

If anyone wants to start a http://www.firedannyferry.com website, I’d be happy to apply for a spot as a contributing writer.

  67. nick Says:

  68. nick Says:

Pepe says :BW. If you aren’t going to report the trade rumor then don’t report anything.

This whole thing was kind of classless on your part, IMO. Plus the shill job for Danny Ferry only worsens it.

i’m with you 100% on this

  69. calmdownpeople Says:

calm down, this it what happens when you have two expiring contracts and little talent outside of lebron, boobie, and andy. I don’t expect nething to get done, but i do believethat we could get delonte west if we tried.

  70. Cedric Says:

    I hope Ferry contracts syphillis

  71. WTF? Says:

I love that many Cavs fans hate Ferry for surrounding Lebron with inferior talent, yet these same fans also condemn Ferry for failing to pull off a big trade.

Hey, nitwits: If you think the roster around Lebron is garbage, how can you expect Ferry to make a major trade?

Personally, I hope Ferry’s cell phone battery dies and he fails to pull off any deals. The team is so close to getting out of salary cap hell, it would be a shame if he ruined it with a contract like Ben Wallace’s.

Oh– and you can’t call Windhorst a “shill” for the Cavs if he’s confirmed these rumors with other teams. It’s not like Windy is sitting on Ferry’s lap, taking dictation while he blogs.

  72. Tom Says:

Ben Wallace’s contract! That’s TERRIBLE! Wallace, Duhon, and Joe Smith does not make our team THAT much better.

  73. scott Says:

Why the hell would we want Wallace? we already have defense, we already have bigs, we already have bad free-throw shooting, we already have an underperformer with a terrible contract, but at least he adds 15 points a night. If they acquire Wallace and have to hang onto Hughes too, Ferry should definitely be gone.

  74. ricky Says:

man rumors are for big ben, but they don’t want larry hughes. big shocker. i bet nothing happens. im glad, i’ll be patient

  75. Tom Says:

I only like the deal because of Chris Duhon. They should just trade Gooden for Duhon and Joe Smith.

  76. MJ Says:

Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, and Chris Duhon for Hughes, Gooden, and Shannon Brown

Then Newble and Marshall to Seattle for Szcerbiak

That is the blockbuster trade being proposed.

Positives: Smith and Duhon have expiring contracts; replace Larry with a guy that can shoot

Negatives: Ben Wallace is a joke on the offensive end and he is on the downslope

Essentially the Cavs are trading Hughes for Wallace (whose contracts expire in the same year) and Marshall for Szcerbiak (whose contracts expire the same year)

Do I do the deal? I would ask LeBron first.

  77. Ricky Says:

    So where’s the updates? Weak.

  78. MJ Says:

Don’t worry guys, nothing is going to happen. I guarantee it. If something actually happens, I will give one million dollars to every person that has posted.

  79. Mike C Says:

    Posting for a million dollars.

  80. Mike C Says:

Now that it’s clear that there are a lot of rumblings around the Cavaliers, will all the people who called Brian a shill for his posts last night and today apologize.

  81. LeCavalier Says:

Just Say NO to Ben Wallets!

  82. mike Says:

Chad Ford: (2:38 PM ET ) Wow … too close to call right now. Apparently, one of the reasons the Cavs are pushing that Hughes be in the Bulls deal is that they want their expiring contracts and Donyell Marshall to get ahold of Wally Szczerbiak. So the Cavs would add Wally, Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and Duhon. Could it be three new starters around LeBron?

  83. Chuck Says:

    I want my million, too!

  84. kj Says:

if these “details” are correct and that’s who we end up with, well, it will confirm my worst fears and that is that ferry is reacting in a panic to appease the moronic press and moronic “fans” like doc, biff, et al by making ANY kind of deal just to prove he can do *something*. color me unimpressed, if it turns out to be true…

  85. Greg Says:

I guess MJ just saved a ton of cash.

  86. Ed Says:

Yeah….Ferry is gonna make a trade because the fans and message board trolls tell him too….LOL.

If these deal land the Cavs Wallace, Duhon, and Wally for Hughes, Gooden, and dead weight, then I think this makes the Cavs better.

If Joe Smith is also coming this way, that will help too.

I REALLY hope the Cavs can somehow get Delonte West in the Seattle deal…..

  87. biginternetpants Says:

my internet pants are very large.

  88. biginternetpants Says:

I am very concerned about the state of my big internet pants.

  89. Joe Says:

I think Ben will be better once he gets to wear his headband again!!!!!!!

  90. Taco-pants Says:

wallace and sczerbiak???? someone tell me how this is an upgrade!!!!!

if we’re going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade - which i think ferry has to do right now for obvious reasons - at least let’s not blow all of our assets and saddle us with more shitty contracts. this is nuts.

  91. FreePoker4Cash Says:

According to ESPN News the Cavs, Bulls and Sonics may be working on a 3-way deal….I’m assuming Hughes, Wallace, Gooden, Wally, and Marshall are involved…..

  92. jim Says:

Kj you are either illiterate or just an idiot….Have you been paying attention at all over the last few days? What’s that? Oh, you just wanted to get up on your high horse and pretend that unlike the rest of us, you are the only one who understands the NBA and the Cavs? Thought so. Retard.

  97. Ed Says:

ESPN News reporting a 3 way with Cavs, Sonics and Bulls.

Cavs would net West, Wally, Big Ben and Joe Smith I believe.

Sonics would take Marshal, Duhon, Newble,

Bulls would get Gooden, Hughes, and Ced Simmons

Just waiting league approval - according to ESPN News.

  98. Hilla Says:

This is weird. Why haven’t we heard either way whether this deal has been done??? It’s 42 minutes past the deadline. What is going on???

here’s what the seattle sonics beat writer just posted about 20 minutes ago: Just confirmed a three-way deal has been revised. The Sonics sent West and Szczerbiak to Cleveland and it’s believed that they will receive Donyell Marshall and Ira Newble. Cleveland is also expected to net Ben Wallace and Joe Smith and Chicago will get Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden.

  101. doc Says:

Wallace, Joe Smith, Delonte West, Wallyworld…… i gotta think about this one.

But no apologies to BW. I was embarassed for him reading this blog post. Either report some news or not. Don’t plead for “understanding” because poor Danny boy from Duke is “working so hard”….

I hate to be another Z basher (given his inevitable coronation into the Cavs Hall of Fame according to BW) but has anyone else realized that the big lumbering lithuanian has pretty much lost it on the offensive end? His points come on O-rebound put backs and dunks off perfect Lebron feeds anymore. His 15 footer has been in Siberian hibernation for months and those gangly, awkward moves around the hoop are cringe inducing. So maybe Wallace plays the 5 in crunch time. He gives you better defense, equivalent rebounding, can run on the break….. maybe this trade works. Joe Smith is underrated. Wally and West ought cancel out whatever you lose from Hughes on offense….

  102. jason Says:

    it’s happening: Szczerbiak, B. Wallace, Delonte West to Cavs;
Hughes and Gooden to Chicago; Newble, Donyell M. to Sonics.

  103. kj Says:

getting west makes this deal *far* more palatable than the one proposed earlier in the day. plus we kept djones and boobie. we know have 4 very solid shooters on this team to punish teams who double LBJ. and while i was never really a fan of wallace ( always thought he was slightly over-rated even in his glory years) at least he will rebound consistently and play much tougher than gooden. and LBJ needs a tough guy down low to whack the rasheed’s of the world when they take cheap shots…but getting west was the cherry on top and ( unhinged ferry haters stop reading now ) ferry deserves credit for this deal. guess he was “trying” after all, eh?

  104. kptb Says:

I fail to see how this is an upgrade.
Delonte West - shooting under 40%, 3 assists, 7 points
Larry Hughes is better than that.
Wally Sczerbiak - serviceable but nothing to be excited about.
should be able to replace Newble and Simmons on offense - defense is doubtful.
Ben Wallace and Joe Smith barely make up for Gooden and Marshall, neither can catch the ball any better under the basket and score than what the Cavs are giving up.

  105. Tom Says:

This is an upgrade - Delonte is a good point guard and Wally is a sharp shooter. This looks like a good fit for the Cavs.

  106. kptb Says:

This makes Ben Wallace the highest paid player on the Cavs roster - that is not even a bad joke.
All the people talking about Larry Hughes’ contract should go a chew on that piece. Ben Wallace - the one and undoubted Cavaliers star player! (at least salary wise)

  108. Ed Says:

“Ben Wallace and Joe Smith barely make up for Gooden and Marshall,”

    Huh??? How do you figure….??

Gooden and Smith are a wash. Gooden is younger but right now I’d rather have Smith. Gooden has “lottery pick” syndrome. He still thinks he’s a STAR. Smith knows his role and does it pretty well.

Wallace and Marshall??? Come on….no comparison even if Ben has lost some of his game.

Wallace was unhappy in Chicago and I think a move to a contender will motivate him. Plus he’ll play more PF alongside Z and with Andy. What about Andy and Ben playing alongisde each other? Could be nice.

Wallace IS overpaid….BUT….the Cavs were going to PAY that money anyway to an UNHAPPY Hughes. So that’s a wash contract wise.

Marshall and Newble were practically dead weight. they have played of late because of injuries, but aren’t worth much.

West has sucked in Seattle this year. But his career stats show is a good shooter. And he’ll get open shots playing with LBJ, unlike those awful Seattle teams.

Wally gives us another shooter. Every expert and non-expert has noted th Cavs need more shooters around LBJ.

Now they have Gibson, Sasha, Damon Jones, Wally, and West. Z gives them a post presence and Andy and Ben are bangers who can defend PF’s like Bosh, KG, and Rasheed in the East. Joe Smith gives us a competent 4th big guy. A role Marshall used to occupy.

Smith is easily an upgrade over Marshall.

hope this helps you see it was a good deal.

  109. Tom Says:

why can i never get this page to update

  110. kptb Says:

If you look at the per 48 minute stats, then Ben Wallace is pretty much the same a s Marshall
“Wallace and Marshall??? Come on….no comparison even if Ben has lost some of his game.”
    Ben 7.51 pp48m, 13.00 rp48m, 2.66 ap48m
    Donyell 12.51 pp48min, 9.13 rp48m, 1.49 ap48min
Granted, Ben is the better defender but he is not going to spread the floor for LeBron at all. He is porbably going to clog the lane even more. There is no need to guard Ben Wallace if he is more than 5 feet from the basket, freeing another person to try and stop LeBron.

  111. smrtazz Says:

this is a fantastic trade. Joe Smith could be a huge part of this trade. He’s having a great year. Wallace and Z on the floor at the same time? That sounds pretty sick. Delonte West is an immediate upgrade at PG. i can see him dishing out 8 assists and 2 steals a night, if he’s healthy and clicks….
and last but certainly not least, really, please repeat after me….
THE CAVS JUST GOT RID OF LARRY HUGHES!!!!!
