Wizards vs. Cavs

Cavs 121, Wizards 85

–So this was didn’t finish the way anyone thought it would. This was historic tonight, folks. The Cavs set records for points in a quarter (43 in the third) and their 39 assists and six turnovers is a first since they started keeping the turnover stat. There’s a bunch of the other records, but please go look at my story on Ohio.com for that. I do write for a newspaper, too, by the way.
–So a bunch of stuff went the Cavs way, they got all the loose balls, Larry Hughes was dunking, Devin Brown was hitting 3-pointers, etc. That stuff isn’t going to happen but a couple times in a season. More important, the Cavs’ ball movement was off the charts. It has been getting better and better over the last month but you can see they are really committing to it now. Sasha Pavlovic had seven assists, that’s a career high and he did it in 19 minutes. It’s easy to mock Mike Brown’s drive-and-kick offense, but there’s no doubt they have been working on it and it’s getting better.
–Bad break to lose Sasha to a foot injury because he was just starting to break out of his slump. He has a sprain and there’s an MRI set for tomorrow. He was able to leave the arena without crutches, but he might be out a bit. I have a good idea why he’s breaking out, though. His dad, Dusan, is finally here. Usually he and the family come for Christmas but he wasn’t around last month. He was a great player in his day and he’s got the hard Cold War stare that just cuts right through you. When Sasha was in his first year with the Cavs, Paul Silas once said to me “I don’t like that guy, he gives me dirty looks because I don’t play his son,” I said, “Paul, he looks at everybody that way.” He doesn’t speak any English, which is too bad because I’d love to interview him. Sasha talks to him on the phone after every game, even if it is 5 a.m. in Serbia. In fact, all Sasha does is talk to people at home on the phone. His bill must be outrageous. Anyway, Dusan is here and I expect Sasha to continue to play better when he gets back.
–Zydrunas Ilgauskas got a lot of frustrations against Brendan Haywood out tonight. Haywood’s had quite a bit of success against Big Z over the last few years. Z went 10-for-10 tonight and none of them, in my memory, was an offensive putback. They went to him and he executed, especially on his mid-range jumpers, which had been shaky of late.

Tonight’s recap

Pregame

Starting lineups

Wizards: Antonio Daniels, DeShawn Stevenson, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood
Cavs: Larry Hughes, Sasha Pavlovic, LeBron James, Drew Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Officials
Steve Javie, Brian Forte and last seen doing a Cavs game in San Antonio, Mark Wunderlich

–This is a interesting matchup of two hot teams. The Wiz are getting huge seasons from Butler and Jamison, who the Cavs have always had trouble guarding. Supposedly they are playing much better defense this season, too. We’ll see about that. But they have some talent on their bench, especially Darius Songalia and the rookie showing lots of promise, Nick Young.
–The Cavs will need to hold serve here, they are already down 0-1 in this series and there could be a tiebreaker. These two teams could end up playing in the playoffs again, right now they’d be the 4-5 matchup.
–Lenny Wilkens is here and is being honored at halftime. Before the game he had a photo op with Mike Brown and Danny Ferry. Ferry and Brown were smiling, Lenny wasn’t. When working the book The Franchise with Terry Pluto (ahem, available at all local book retailers and online at Amazon.com), we interviewed Lenny, former Cavs GM Wayne Embry and former owner Gordon Gund. Even 20 years later, the emotions involving the Ferry-Ron Harper trade are very raw. All three men got pretty heated when talking about it and all three have their own version of events. It was such a hot spot and murky, Terry and I didn’t really address it all that much in the book because it would’ve just been these guys yelling about each other. Here’s the point, Lenny’s is still mad about it today and even though he probably doesn’t have anything against Danny, it’s probably not good for his blood pressure to be posing for pictures with him.

Halftime — Cavs 52, Wizards 46

–Cavs are shooting 54 percent at home and are only up four. That should be somewhat concerning. When the Wizards went zone the Cavs settled for lots of jumpers in the second quarter after they lived on feeding Z early on.
–Even though it looks ugly, recently Z has been able to finish with back to the basket moves. Giving him touches only helps because even if he misses, there are not usually long rebounds and it gives the Cavs a chance to get back on defense.
–Nick Young posterized LeBron on a dunk early in the second quarter. It was pretty impressive. We’ll see if LeBron gets him back.
–Larry Hughes is celebrating his 29th birthday by airballing layups.
–So far the Wiz bench as outplayed the Cavs, that group didn’t play all that well in the second quarter. They’ll have to pick it up in the fourth.
–Expect Jamison or Butler to get hot in the second half.

Postgame — Cavs 121, Wizards 85

Stars
LeBron James, 23 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists
Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 24 points, 6 rebounds
Drew Gooden, 18 points, 10 rebounds

Quotes
Eddie Jordan: “It was painful, bordering on embarrassing. We played them without LeBron (in December). I certainly remember LeBron saying very shortly after our game that he was going to remember all the butt kicking they got while he was out and people talking about him and that when he came back he was going to get some payback. This was one of those paybacks.”
LeBron: “Offensively we were unbelievable tonight. We were near perfect.”

Brian,

We all know that one game doesn’t tell the story about a team’s defense. Neither do numbers, but more knowledge helps.

Surprisingly, the Wizards are actually a slower team than the Cavs, based on pace factor. They score 6 more ppg because they are a lot more efficient.

Defensively, they’re right next to the Cavs, with a rating of 105.7, 14th in the league. The Cavs are 12th at 105.5, meaning we’d give up 105.5 points in 100 possessions.

Mike C January 23, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Can we get an update on the Drew Gooden/DeShawn Stevenson beard-off?

Cavs are making the defensively-improved Wizards look lost so far…

LeCavalier January 23, 2008 at 9:56 pm

I hope Ira is ready to go in the 4th. We wouldn’t want him pulling anything…

Jim January 23, 2008 at 10:00 pm

YEAH! Eric Snow is in! I figured we’d have to be up by 60 for that to happen.

Tom January 23, 2008 at 10:06 pm

34 assists and only 4 turnovers!

MIKE BROWN THE OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT!

The DEFENSIVE MINDED WASHINGTON WIZARDS! LOL!

LARRY HUGHES HAS TWO DUNKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ERIC SNOW IS ALIVE!

LARRY HUGHES HAS TWO DUNKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom January 23, 2008 at 10:08 pm

DWAYNE JONES WITH THE THROWDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michele January 23, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Good win by the Cavs…alot of heroes tonight.
So what’s the story on Pavlovic’s foot? He’s finally playing some decent ball.

Temple-Man January 23, 2008 at 10:57 pm

We’re not the only fans who should get pissed at their team’s effort some nights. Was that the Washington GENERALS tonight or what? Nice to see us take advantage of a team that just didn’t care. Normally we go down to the wire no matter how bad the other team is playing. Nice job by Z getting off to a great start also. The real test will be Friday.

Hondo17 January 23, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Matt – They looked like the same ole wiz to me. Totally rely on jumpers and absolutley have no inside presence. Look, they are a talented team and on any given night can tear it up. However they still just don’t have a enough to beat the Cavs in a 7 game, lockdown gritty playoff series.

Tom January 24, 2008 at 12:29 am

Brian – where is the story on Ohio.com?

LeCavalier January 24, 2008 at 1:27 am

Surprise, surprise, the Wizards and their “vaunted” defense are fraudulent. Looks like another season of 35 to 41 wins is in the cards for Fast Eddie’s squad.

Dr. Doom January 24, 2008 at 7:36 am

“Larry Hughes is celebrating his 29th birthday by airballing layups.”

I guess like a lot of people, Larry has been 29 forever.

brayden January 24, 2008 at 7:45 am

just imagine if lebron played in that last quarter??? 50 plus points oh and illgauskas. 10 from 10 for illgauskas. by the way wizards were supposed to give us a challenge maybe they should chalenge under 12 players. they played shocking with out there inquired star. some bad news is our team playued a good game tonight pavolic played well but larry hughes 4 points ??? we gotta do something now lebron can you get a better player ??????? i dont think so

JoeHoops (President AlanTuckerFanClub.com) January 24, 2008 at 8:45 am

Right now the Cavs could beat anybody in the league. Problem is, they could play horribly in the next game. What we need now is consistency.

jmoe January 24, 2008 at 9:43 am

Maybe Ferry isn,t so dumb after all. Did Gibson make
the 3 point shootout? If not I vote for Damona and his
custom ball rack. I wonder if the Reverend and Brian will
ever do a fashion show with the illustrious Mr. Jones.
They could even get their own Mohawks. Oh wait you
have to have a median strip for that. Sorry guys.
And would everyone please start using their own
screen names again. Like Tucker and Joe Hoops.
Reverend Billy please issue a pox on the run and
gun Suns. Put some cement in their shoes.

billy January 24, 2008 at 10:02 am

last night on the radio, joe tait said that you could count the suns coming in to ctown with a victory over the wolves, well big joe, you lost your prophet license because the suns lost, so just stick to calling the basketball game and leave the prophecy to the prophets. good win for the cavs but we still have a long way to go, i hoping they lose so they could break up this over acheiving team(sorry about the spelling, i use to cut english class) GRACE AND PEACE, BILLY

Taco-pants January 24, 2008 at 10:47 am

the wizards have been playing their tits off for the last week and they looked completely gassed. great win, but of course we’re going to shoot the lights out when the shots aren’t being contested. so i guess gibson is back in the rotation now that sasha is hurt? personally, i’d rather see devin in there.

great job last night, Z. good luck with amare. my advice? sweep the leg.

Thoughts on the Cavs win over the Wizards:

- Is “win” a big enough word? Is “rout” more appropriate?

- This game was a case study on the importance of a good front line to an NBA team. LeBron, Z, Drew and Andy combined for 71 points, while the Wizards “big” men, Butler, Jamison, Haywood, Blatche and Songaila, only managed 48. The Cavs outrebounded the Wizards by 24, 53-29. But perhaps most importantly, the Cavs made it absolutely miserable for the Wizards inside, so the Wizards settled for jump shots, which they missed with regularity in the second half.

- Hopefully this will make everyone think twice when they want to add Gooden to a deal to bring in a point guard. Depth on the front line is vital, and when you don’t have it, well, you’re the Wizards, the Nets, the Bulls, or any number of teams that aren’t going anywhere come playoff time.

- I kept checking the schedule to see if the Wizards were on a back-to-back. They looked completely worn out in the second half.

- The Cavs are currently one game off of their halfway pace of last year. They are currently 23-18, and last year at this time they were 24-17, and in the midst of a streak where they lost 6 out of 8. After all the hand-wringing, the team is arguably in a better spot right now than they were a year ago.

- The Suns lost in Minnesota despite shooting 56% from the field. How? Well, the T-Wolves outrebounded the Suns 48-26, which resulted in the T-Wolves shooting 17 more shots than the Suns. Here’s hoping the Cavs take some notes, and remember that they aren’t going to beat the Suns by running up and down the court the whole time.

- The NBA League Pass Preview is on again this week, which let me watch the end of the Bulls-Pacers game. The Bulls have 3 commentators in their broadcast booth. It’s overkill, and it’s miserable. Joe Tait deserves his lifetime achievement award tonight.

Go Cavs.

Mike C.

Brian January 24, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Finally the end to the drive and kick and more attention to ball movement. We’ll be unstopable when Boobie starts hitting again. Everybody was shooting well and rebounding well. All the Sasha haters are nowhere to be seen today and Dwayne Jones got some extended garbage time on the floor. Good day in C-town.

LeCavalier January 24, 2008 at 1:28 pm

The Cavs played the Suns pretty tough in Phoenix in November. Although things fell apart in the 4th quarter and Nash couldn’t miss.

I still like our chances if we cut off Nash’s passing lanes and contest every shot.

Lord knows they can’t stop LeBron or Zydrunas.

Dan January 24, 2008 at 6:14 pm

haha God bless Eric Snow for the person he is and all but his jump shot has to be the ugliest thing since Mateen Cleaves

Darko January 24, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Danny Gibson has been told that he’s going to be in the 3pt, and Rookie/Soph games over the allstar break, but hasn’t formally committed to both yet. If his health is good at decision time, he will do both. That’s from a Cleveland television station last night, but can’t remember which one it was I heard it on.

JBJB January 24, 2008 at 8:11 pm

ESPN is reporting that Sasha will be out 2 months with the foot sprain.

Corporate Whore January 24, 2008 at 8:48 pm

No, Mike, if Gooden can be traded for a good PG, they will do it in a second. They have to. Yes, having great front court depth is very important, but so is having one competent shooting guard. If Gooden can get you that, you do it.

billy January 24, 2008 at 10:24 pm

it is so funny that sasha had his best game since his hold out, and now he is out for 2 weeks. the funny thing about it, is that people are actually going to say that we will miss him. heck i say give shannon a chance, but potato head will give the mins to damon jones and e snow before he admit that he was wrong about shannon. GRACE AND PEACE, BILLY

JoeHoops (President AlanTuckerFanClub.com) January 25, 2008 at 8:47 am

I hope Sasha being out of the lineup doesn’t throw things off. I know he hasn’t been playing well, but the team has really gelled with this starting lineup and the other guys coming off the bench. Hopefully this doesn’t screw up our momentum!

larry d. January 25, 2008 at 9:41 am

Boy if the Cavs would have nabbed Luis Scola last summer, like they were reportedly planning to do, or traded for a draft pick for Big Baby, trading Gooden for a shooter would be a no brainer.

billy January 25, 2008 at 10:51 am

i wish yahoo.com stop teasing us, they said it was rumor that the trailblazers and cavs were talking about jarret jack and another player for larry hughes, all i got to say is heck yeah, do it, do it. what did i tell ya about the sasha comments, joe hoops please tell me you post that on purpose just to humor me. sasha sucks and that fact that he is out is a good thing. GRACE AND PEACE, BILLY

JBJB January 25, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Lebron’s OT stats this year from ESPN:

Cleveland has played five overtime games this season, with James averaging 38.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 9.8 assists in those contests.

These are unreal numbers, this guy owns OT.

Brian January 25, 2008 at 5:23 pm

The Wizards game marked his first back-to-back games scoring in double figures since early December. In his last two games, he averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds and was shooting 56.3 percent from the field (9 of 16) and 40 percent from behind the arc (2 of 5).
“That (stinks),” Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas said. “He was playing so much better. He had been struggling with his confidence a little bit.”
Cavs coach Mike Brown said Pavlovic was “playing great basketball.
“He’s starting to do those intangible things on the floor. That excites me about Sasha.”
In the previous two games, Pavlovic started out defending Miami’s Dwyane Wade and Washington’s Caron Butler. Wade will be a starting guard on the Eastern Conference All-Star team, and Butler could be added as a reserve.
