Cavs vs. Bucks

Starting lineups

Bucks: Mo Williams, Michael Redd, Desmond Mason, Yi Jianlian, Andrew Bogut
Cavs: Daniel Gibson, Sasha Pavlovic, LeBron James, Drew Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Officials
Jim Clark, Bennie Adams, Tommy Nunez

–The Cavs only reserve big man right now is Dwayne Jones with Cedric Simmons out with another left ankly injury. The Bucks have a good big man rotation with energy man Dan Gadzuric and Charlie Villaneuva coming off the bench. Keep an eye on that.
–Desmond Mason has developed a bit of a rep as one of the guys in the league who does a good job on LeBron on defense. Let’s see how he handles him tonight when he’s hot and rested.
–The Bucks have not been scoring very well in the early season and the Cavs spent their three off days working on defense. Of course, Williams will be everything Gibson can handle and Redd can go for 40 if he’s hot from the outside.
–Eric Snow is back and available, but he’s probably not in the rotation. That is unless Charlie Bell, Redd or Williams gets going, then watch how fast Mike Brown tries his defensive stopper.
–Drew Gooden has always seemed to play well against the Bucks. Now he’s got a new opposite number in Yi Jianlian. Drew is stronger than Yi, we’ll see if he can take advantage.

Halftime — Cavs 53, Bucks 49

–Cavs had a 14-point lead and then got lazy and it showed as they turned the ball over seven times in the second quarter which led to — prepare — 14 points. Also, Cavs are being beat on second chance points. Cavs are effort challenged at the moment.
–Royal “with Cheese” Ivey has 11 points off the bench. Enough said.
–LeBron can get to the basket whenever he wants, we’ll see how much he goes. The Bucks have been bringing doubles and then backing off and he’s attacked when they’ve backed off. We’ll see if Milwaukee sticks to that plan.
–Early in the game the Cavs were posting up a bunch and then they went away from it. The Bucks outscored them in the paint and at the line in the first half. Cavs can’t win that way.
–I thought Drew Gooden’s attempt at being a point guard on that one possession worked out just fine.
–Ira Newble has his moments out there, but he sure seems to get beat on a lot of rebounds, too.

Postgame — Bucks 111, Cavs 107

Stars

Michael Redd, 34 points, 20-of-25 free throws, seven assists
LeBron, 24 points, seven assists, seven rebounds
Mo Williams, 20 points, nine assists
Daniel Gibson, 26 points, 5-of-8 on 3s

–Bucks played very well, they must be given credit first off. They worked their game plan well and took advantage of the way the officials were calling the game by using drives to get fouls and free points.
–Now that’s out of the way, the Cavs’ defense is just flat out not getting it done. There is no reason to talk about the offense right now. It’s doing its job and then some. Coming into this game, the Bucks were averaging 89 points and shooting 41 percent from the field on the road. Tonight they get 111 and shot 48 percent. And that was after a 5-of-17 start.
–Redd was great in the third quarter but he made contested shots. That spurt did not decide the game. It was Redd driving and the Cavs reaching in and being slow to rotate that made a difference. Mo Williams drove through the lane a couple of times and went around three guys.
–In their six losses the Cavs are giving up 108 points and 48 percent shooting. That is why they are 5-6. Not because of injuries or holdouts. This team needs to play defense to win, even more so than getting great performances from LeBron, which he had tonight.
–Royal Ivey had 10 points this season until tonight, when he had 15.
–Bucks had more rebounds, scored 15 more points off turnovers, had more fastbreak points, more second chance points and a load more bench points. Amazing the Cavs just lost by four.
–Speaking of injuries, Donyell Marshall is out another eight weeks. The team announced it after the game, which is quite shady to say the least. And they announced it quite poorly. Here is the press release, word for word:

“Cavaliers forward Donyell Marshall today completed a period of additional examination and evaluation for his sprained right wrist. The initial treatment of rest and immobilization for 7-10 days was step one and has been completed. After additional opinions and evaluations were gained, step two started today with a cortisone shot to the impacted area of his wrist. A period of further immobilization, and then rehab to promote healing and resolution of his symptoms, will now commence. It is estimated that the complete treatment and rehab process will take 6-8 weeks starting today. Donyell will be listed as Out during that time period and his status will be updated as appropriate.”

Talk about burying the lead. This is semi-NBA standard, I remember the release from the Suns when Amare Stoudemire had knee surgery and the word “microfracture” was in the last paragraph. I will now commence to make a comment about the promotion of healing and resolution of symptoms. The Cavs are going to need another big man and sooner rather than later. Ira Newble played 26 minutes and had just two rebounds. He’s fighting but he can’t do it night in and night out against so many bigger bodies.

Quotes:

Mike Brown: “107 points and shooting 47 percent from the field should be good enough for us to win any basketball game we play. We’ve got to figure out what our identity is.”
LeBron: “We know what we need to do defensively, we have to continue to get better and figure some things out.”

Who draws more iron, Devin Brown or Larry Hughes?

Why in heck is Devin Brown allowed to hoist threes when he’s obviously nothing more than a bricklayer?

brian November 20, 2007 at 8:08 pm

The front court bench really needs to be addressed. If AV is not going to be signed, the FO really needs to bring in another big. I don’t think Simmons or Dwayne Jones should be getting major minutes, nor can they rely on Marshall.

Things are going okay so far, but Z and Gooden will be burnt out at the end of the year if they keep playing near 40min a game. You can tell it hurts the overall defensive energy as well, especially in the second half.

Maureen November 20, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Those Bucks uniforms are ugly. Is their alternate mascot a Christmas tree?

Who is the color commentator tonight along with Fred McLeod?

Maureen November 20, 2007 at 8:28 pm

a ha – it is Campy Russell.

Rob November 20, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Devin probably draws slightly more iron, but he makes 1/10th of what Hughes does.

They are always talking about the “hockey assist” on the broadcast. If Mike Brown is so serious about it, the Cavs should publish the teams hockey assist stats. Who leads the Cavs in hockey assists?

Wess November 20, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Any news on the Cavs signing a big man ala PJ Brown?

JoeHoops November 20, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Lebron is just the shit. Blocking shots, fancy passes, spectacular dunks. This guy is on a tear. I watched Kobe the other night and he played well, but damn Lebron is just on ANOTHER LEVEL this year compared to the other stars in the league. He is big and so damn athletic that when he gets going, NOBODY is going to stop him. Lets hope it continues!!!

MattW November 20, 2007 at 9:11 pm

The Cavs seem to be scoring at will tonight. They *should* easily win, but I’m worried about them falling back into the old habit of playing down to their competition.

MattW November 20, 2007 at 10:03 pm

It’s the fourth quarter now, and it’s easy to see how the Cavs’ lazyness in the second quarter has hurt them. They need to finish the game off the way they began it.

Dan November 20, 2007 at 10:26 pm

cavs are playing lazy and have no one to blame but themselves. lebron had several turnovers, disgustingly lazy play. also, i know drew gooden is known for the occasional brain fart but this whole game has been a brain fart for him. it was frustrating that as the home team we couldn’t get any blatant calls this game, rough officiating. lets hope for a better outing tomorrow against the hapless timber wolves.

MattW November 20, 2007 at 10:29 pm

“it was frustrating that as the home team we couldn’t get any blatant calls this game, rough officiating.”

That seems to be pretty f****** common this season for the Cavaliers.

JoeHoops November 20, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Devin Brown needs to update his website…. http://www.dbrown23.com/

brian November 20, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Ugh, our bench is so thin right now. Ira Newble just cannot get 25+mins a game.

Sasha and Gibson are an absolute sieve on defense on the perimeter, and it doesn’t really matter how many 3s Boobie makes as long as the opposing team keeps scoring 100+ every game.

The season is early though, have to keep patient. I think there is a 0% chance Ferry keeps the roster the same this year; a change will have to be made at some point.

Wess November 20, 2007 at 11:08 pm

The bench is thin and Ferry is REFUSING to get a big man in here when there are several available right now.

T.M. November 20, 2007 at 11:59 pm

How long before LeBron starts getting frustrated? With ANY kind of help this would be a surefire 50-win team, he’s that good, but right now there’s a good chance they’ll be a lottery team. All we hear about is Kobe’s whining, but imagine LeBron with that team? Considering the complete silence from the front office, they MUST have something cooking, either that or Ferry needs to be canned, because this is pathetic.

LeBron’s numbers in the past 3 games: 113 points, 31 rebounds and 29 assists (or somewhere near that)… the cavs record: 1-2. This is starting to get really frustrating. I thought maybe after a wild game against the Magic (and especially after the win against the Jazz), this was a team ready to establish itself as a top 4 team in the east. LeBron is certainly establishing himself as the best player in the Association, and yet his team is sub-.500. Yeah it’s early, but something needs to change ASAP or he will get restless, even if its his hometown and he hasn’t shown any signs of wanting out thus far.

James November 21, 2007 at 5:39 am

Well this game proves more than anything, just how much we need AV. Quality big men are not dime a dozen in this league and we are so thin up front it is ridiculous. Apparently Cedric Simmons has the weakest ankles of anyone in the association as he has been questionable with an ankle sprain his entire career. We won last year because we killed people on the boards and defensively. We are not winning this year because we are getting killed on the boards and playing horrible defense. People want to complain and moan about Larry Hughes play and AV wanting too much money, but it is clear that this needs to be a defensive team, and those guys were extremely integral in that.

Jerry November 21, 2007 at 7:42 am

The arrogance of this front office is astounding. While I agree that Varejao should not be signed at his price, their failure to bring in any frontcourt help is crippling the Cavs right now. And it seems that everyone in the world wants Earl Boykins except Ferry/Brown. Why we wouldn’t want a relatively inexpensive dynamic scorer/ball handler/hometown favorite is beyond me. I know, I know, the D. Well, the guys we have out there right now are matadors, so…..As great as LeBron is, he can’t do it alone. Plus, I know Dan Gilbert puts a lot into the ADHD Playhouse known as the Q on game day, but I attended the Jazz game and as usual, I left the arena with a splitting headache. It’s so contrived. Mr. Gilbert, please pay more attention to your team roster.

Mortimer November 21, 2007 at 7:55 am

Forget about Earl Boykins……..Danny is working on getting Andre Miller, Jason Kidd, or Mike Bibby. Let this thing work it’s way out.

Mortimer November 21, 2007 at 7:57 am

What’s more embarrassing, Devin Brown’s shooting “touch” or his WebSite with 2006 data?

If anyone is taking Earl Boykin’s roster spot it’s good ole Devin.

Mike C November 21, 2007 at 9:56 am

Thoughts on the Cavs loss last night:

- There were some easy Bucks baskets last night, and an awful lot of free throws, but something has to be said about how difficult some of those shots were for the Bucks. The shots that Michael Redd was hoisting in the 3rd Quarter were ridiculous. Villaneuva *banked in* a 3 in the last six minutes. If those are the shots that they take on a regular night, it’s no wonder that they haven’t been scoring 90.

- Only here could someone decide to take shots at Devin Brown after last night’s game. The guy is shooting 37% from the field, but you want to kill him on a night where he shoots 50%. Nice timing.

- Still, both Devin Brown and Ira Newble had +/-’s of -10. The Bucks’ bench was contributing while the Cavs bench, you know, wasn’t.

- Does it make sense to point out that Sasha only had 5 points in 27 minutes when it wasn’t exactly the offense that cost the Cavs the game? I’m not sure, but I know that the Cavs need some better production out of Pavlovic.

- I don’t know what should be done, but the Cavs need to find some energy. The team is already grinding because of the minutes, and there’s no relief in sight. They need to get some healthy bodies in here. They play a back-to-back tonight, and another on Saturday and Sunday, both with the second game being on the road. The schedule-makers certainly didn’t do the Cavs any favors so far this season.

Go Cavs,

Mike C.

jmoe November 21, 2007 at 10:24 am

The Cavs were getting beat pretty good on the defensive
glass last night. Bogut and Jianlin and Vanillawafers were
pounding the O boards while Melon Muff and the Two Toed
Sloth watched them eat glass. Donyell and Larry are on the
IRL list (I really lost interest). Troubled times in the land of
the sword. The next two weeks are brutal Boston 2 New
Jersey 2 Toronto 2 Detroit .

alan t. November 21, 2007 at 11:27 am

Donyell Marshall’s wrist. Who’s been treating Marshall, the same Monty Python doctors who treated Brad Daugherty’s foot? New day, different story. Just announce that the guy is out for the season, and be done with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf301EVMJqM&feature=related

larry d. November 21, 2007 at 11:37 am

They should get that doctor who repaired Hughes’ finger on the case.

Mortimer November 21, 2007 at 1:40 pm

How about Danny Ferry activating himself? I’d say he’s a better shot than Devin Brown and Ira Newble as it is.

Danny Feeeeeery for threeeeeeeeeeee!
