Hughes out for a month
Posted November 16th, 2007 by Brian Windhorst
The Cavaliers will make an annoucement today that Larry Hughes is expected to miss about a month with a bone bruise in his left leg. It stems from the collision he had with Leandro Barbosa on Nov. 3. He missed three games after it but when he came back he was limping and obviously not playing well. He went just 2-of-12 against the Orlando Magic Wednesday and left the game limping. In Los Angeles in his first game back, he sat out the fourth quarter limping.
This is part of the Larry Hughes experience. He is a fragile for a pro basketball player. He has always played hard but his body just can’t handle the banging like others. Last year the ankle injury was a freak accident. The finger injury happened during play but he got unlikely when the first surgery ended up failing. So he’s been fragile and unlucky.
It is hard to predict how this will affect the Cavs. They had not been getting much production out of Hughes and there was a logjam at guard. Sasha Pavlovic will likely be the starter again and Devin Brown and Damon Jones will keeping getting big minutes. Still, they again have three rotation players from last season out with injury with Eric Snow and Donyell Marshall.

If Larry had any conscience whatsoever he would be giving back some of his salary a la Travis Fryman. He’s been committing highway-robbery since he’s been here.
Give him a flu shot he’d probably have to miss two weeks.

Even though Hughes has given the Cavs very little on offense I think they’ll really miss him on defense. Point guards have been shredding the Cavs this year, and I think having Hughes and Snow out at the same time has a lot to do with it. I expect another huge game from Deron Williams tonight.

LARRY HUGHES IS THE BIGGEST BUST IN CAVS HISTORY> GUARANTEED> AND THE WORST PART IS WE HAVE OUR HANDS TIED!! WE CANT DO ANYTHING WITH HIM AND BECAUSE OF THE MONEY HE IS GETTING< WE CANT GO OUT AND GET ANYONE NEW!!! HE IIS THE REASON THIS TEAM WILL FAIL!!! AND HE IS THE REASON DANNY FERRY WILL HAVE CHRONIC HEARTBURN!!!!
November 16th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
he adds nothing when he’s healthy. we have to get rid of him.
November 16th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
I agree with JoBu. Even though, Larry is awful, he is still the best on the ball defender (with Snow) we have at the guard position. Problem with both of those guys is that they are offensive liabilities, with Snow being less of one as he realizes that he can’t shoot. I’d rather have Snow out there then Larry. Wow…
D. Gibson on Deron Williams? Yikes. Not good.

Oh no, what will the Cavs ever do without Larry Hughes? Out a month with a “bruise”? I can’t even begin to imagine how long he’d be out with something like poison ivy or a cold sore or a case of the ouchies.
November 16th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
I really wanted larry huges to play well, specially with the personal issues with his ill wufe and late brother. But this is business and a Must needed trade has to take place with all this dead weight(damon jones, ira newble, eric snow,ETC.) blocking out the bright light of our shining star. LBJ!!!
November 16th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
ADIOS, Larry, and good riddance!
Don’t let the door hit you on the behind on your way out the door…it might give you a bruise and make you miss 2 more weeks.

LeBron cannot be shouldering this much load this early in the season. He deals with it in the playoffs but he can’t keep carrying the team on both sides of the court.
Dan Gilbert needs to step up and:
1: Fire Ferry. Yes, his hands are tied now but he put us in this situation. Gilbert needs to send a signal that the team is committed to keeping LeBron and it starts but getting rid of the guy who hasn’t done anything decent but re-sign Z.
2: Go in to the luxury tax or make a big move. Hell, go for Kobe. Kobe and LeBron aren’t exactly best friends but I think at this both would take such a situation. Buy out Hughes, send Gooden, Verajao, and Gibson. Kobe still gets 6 assists per game. Imagine them all going to LeBron.

Better yet — trade for the 1 guy that made Hughes a productive player and got him his big contract: Gilbert Arenas. He has a bum leg now, so he’d fit right in. Injury history + contract make Hughes practically untradeable, so start thinking about other alternatives.
True story: my son attended the Larry Hughes basketball camp this summer. He came home on the first day with an injured finger. Hughes never made an appearance at his camp, and karmic coincidence, my son recovered and didn’t miss a game.

How is this a disappointment? When you go into the NBA.com site and look at stats there is one forproductive combos [best five, best four, three, two… ect. When you look at Cleveland in this all our best combos are without Hughes! Not shore but the best 4 combo was Z,LB,Boobie,Sasha [it is how they produce with stated combo is on the court.
Hughes draws us done, look at last year when he was hurt a Sasha played, we started winning the close games

There goes that Mark Price fee.

When are you going to write the story of what an utter disaster Ferry has created for this team? Can you possibly Lebron staying beyond his current contract if this team isn’t completely overhauled?
November 16th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
I think we need to get Lebrons conditioning coach to work with Larry! Lebron is constantly going down (and scaring all of us), but then he gets right back up and keeps on playing. Hughes gets a love tapp on the leg and he’s out for a month. Crazy!! He has to be the most fragile player in the league…and also the most overpayed!

Test… Is this thing on?
November 16th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
You’ve got to think Gilbert’s wondering about this bald headed GM he hired.
November 16th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Yo Larry D, quit complaing about Ferry. Last year, only one GM did better than him, the dude from San Antonio. Now zip it.
November 16th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
You guys’ grammar is really killing me lately.
November 16th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Why can’t Larry Hughes just get a career-ending injury and be done with it? And no, I am not wishing pain and suffering on Larry. A career-ending injury for Larry would be a papercut on his index finger. He is a creampuff.

JoeHoops in a triumphant return to his original screen name roots. It’s the smell of victory, like Billy Corgan coming back and calling himself the Smashing Pumpkins.

Yo Corporate Whore, yes I am back. Is that idiot Tucker still here?
Go Cavs! Go Lebron! Go DJ! Go Ira! Go Z! Go Wild Thing….oops, too bad, he blew it!!
November 16th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
JoeHoops was gone?
Where’s he been–a waterboarding vacation with old Boatshoes, getting the head screwed back on straight?

Hughes has been an utter disaster. He makes dinner bell Mel Turpin look like a superstar in retrospect. The problem is they can’t trade him because nobody wants his contract (not to mention his poor play). I suggest, when he comes back, that Larry take a seat on the bench. Play him 10-15 minutes a game max. Make him earn his playing time. He’ll stay health that way. And he will not demoralize the team. If they can package him in any kind of deal, do it!

“Yo Larry D, quit complaing about Ferry. Last year, only one GM did better than him, the dude from San Antonio. Now zip it.”
Just because LeBron James carried the Cavs on his back to the NBA Finals last year doesn’t mean Danny Ferry is a good GM. It also doesn’t make Mike Brown a good coach.
LeBron covers up a lot of holes and that’s what he is doing now with the Cavs. Also part of your job as GM is to maintain a certain level of salary cap FLEXIBILITY for the future, of which the Cavs have NONE.
If this team wasn’t so bogged down by over-priced, long-term deals given to players past their prime, then maybe they could do something to get some more talent around LeBron.
Maybe they could afford to slightly overpay for a player like Anderson Varejao. Heck, if I was Verajao I would probably ask for $9 million a year from Ferry seeing what he gave Marshall, Jones, and Hughes….not to mention the deal he gave Z when the Cavs were the ONLY team bidding for Z’s services after they had already paid Z MILLIONS while he sat out 2 1/2 years with a bad foot.
Ferry is awful. To say he is good because the Cavs are winning is foolish.
The Cavs won last year in spite of Ferry and Mike Brown. They will continue to at least be competitive as long as LBJ is playing for them.
Although if we continue to let Danny Ferry run his course…..that won’t be much longer.
I can’t believe Daniel Gilbert has given Danny Ferry the opportunity to tear this franchise down for the SECOND time……ouch.

All the beef I have read here is definitely justified. I for one was one person who did not want us to give a lot of money to Hughes to begin with. Yeah, he average 22/6/5 his last season before we signed him but he played in an uptemo offense that created a ton of possessions. A players scoring average/productivity should always be based on 2 things: points per shot attempts and total offensive possessions. Also, what is this talk of Larry being a good on the ball defender?? Point guards have been shredding the cavs THIS year? They have been shredding us since LBJs rookie year if not further back. Every good PG we have played recently has torched us (see Iverson, Paul, Williams, Nash, Terry) Hughes plays the passing lanes well but still gambles too much allowing gaping holes in the weak side. This team without LBJ A) doesnt make the playoffs B) is barely a 30 win team for the season. Yeah, we have had a good record without Lebron in games he has missed, but I attribute this as an abborition rather than an underlying measure of how good our team truly is. The departure of Hughes, Marshall, Jones, Snow (the last 3 being moreso of their productivity-salary ratio ) and actually having draft picks in 2009 (thanks Paxson, Jiri Welsch for a 1st rounder. How do these A-holes get into this business again?) will paint a very clear picture of whether LBJ stays in Cleveland or not. Heres hoping that in the future we get a true PG, one with size and an overall good skill set of running an offense/playing D and shift Boobie over to the 2.

I would just like to add I agree Ferry should be shown the chopping block if this season does not turn out very well. How on Earth Gilbert allowed Larry to get a FIVE year contract is beyond ludicrous. How do you give an injury prone, streaky shooter that brings little else aside from scoring that long of a contract. I have issues with the $$$ (aside from the fact there was not really anyone else out there; Redd was NEVER going to suit up in Cleveland and Im not sure Ray Allen would have fit in with our scheme) but the length of the contract is what really irks me.

s-o-f -T sof capital t. He should just move into the weight room at the practice facility in Independence and sleep there and lift weights all day. I remember I fell out of a 20 ft tree a few years back. I was only down for a week.
