Pregame
Starting lineups
Cavs: Daniel Gibson, Larry Hughes, LeBron James, Drew Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Clippers: Sam Cassell, Quinton Ross, Corey Maggette, Tim Thomas, Chris Kaman
–Hughes is back after missing three games, no minute restrictions. Devin Brown was out of the rotation before Larry got hurt. It will be interesting to see who loses minutes tonight. Damon Jones may be the guy, but he’s played steady since the preseason.
–Cuttino Mobley is out with a leg injury for the Clippers. So is Elton Brand, who has a torn Achilles
–Kaman is third in the NBA in rebounds, Ilgauskas is fourth. Both are also good offensive rebounders. Keep an eye on that battled tonight, Kaman has been playing great and one of the main reasons the Clippers are 4-1.
–Ruben Patterson has been effective in guarding LeBron for periods in the past and the Cavs have had trouble guarding him when he plays power forward. He could be an X factor.
–Clippers are a good 3-point shooting team, if the Cavs are late in their rotations, they will pay.
Halftime — Cavs 50, Clippers 44
–The Clippers are having a classic coming home game, they look low on energy and sloppy. It happens coming off long road trips and if you don’t believe me wait until you see the Cavs Wednesday. The Cavs can win this game if they want it, but I’m not sure yet. This second half in a way may define whether this is a successful trip or not.
–The Cavs offense has been much better tonight than in Sac. They’ve got 28 points in the paint and 15 free throws, they are driving it and pushing it. Mike Brown used his practice time here well.
–LeBron is really working on Quinton Ross, who is giving up 60, yes 60, pounds to him. If he keeps posting him up he will continue to have success. LeBron has four steals in the first half, by the way.
–Larry Hughes has come back and played well, making 4-of-5 shoots. Devin Brown has also done well of the bench, right not Sasha is the odd man out.
–Maggette is having his way with 18 points, the Cavs may need to alter their defense on him a bit. He’s getting open lanes and getting to the line. He also has six boards.
–Ilgauskas has just two rebounds in the first half, but Gooden has 12. Could easily reverse in the second half.
Postgame — Cavs 103, Clippers 95
Stars
LeBron James, 22 points, eight assists and six picks…He was in complete control in the fourth
Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 25 points…In a great rhythm
Drew Gooden, 18 points, 17 boards…who’d have thought Ira Newble would prevent him from going 20/20
Sam Cassell, 29 points on 19 shots…he’s still got it
–There is one game left, but the Cavs have to consider this road trip a success. The Clippers went after it in the second half and the Cavs handled it. They played in the fourth quarter like they were 100 percent sure they were going to win. If the ending had gone different in Utah this thing may really have been special.
–LeBron had five assists (one for a 3) and two baskets in the fourth quarter, meaning he was responsible for 15 points. Yet the way he did it was more impressive than if he’d scored them all by himself. The Cavs actually ran offense instead of standing around in the fourth quarter and the Clippers couldn’t cover it.
–The Cavs had 54 points in the paint tonight, a season-high. They also shot a season-best 51 percent. These numbers are related.
–Ilgauskas’ rebound streak ended tonight, but he really played his best offensive game of the season with 13 points in the fourth quarter. Chris Kaman ate him up in the third and he responded by outplaying him at both ends down the stretch.
–The Cavs’ opponents are shooting 36 percent in the fourth quarter in their wins. Tonight the Clippers shot 35.
–Devin Brown and Damon Jones combined for 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Newble had eight rebounds in 15 minutes after he had seven in Phoenix. How long can the bench keep this up? Larry Hughes, Daniel Gibson, and Drew Gooden did even play in the fourth, and it wasn’t their fault.
–The Cavs were 4-0 in Cali last year and they’re 3-0 this year.
–Oh, um, the Cavs were 16-of-27 at the foul line and 2-6 in the last minute.
–Hughes look pretty good in his return with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. But he was limping pretty bad in the second half. Sasha Pavlovic also had back spasms and Brown looked like he tweaked a leg muscle late in the game. Come back tomorrow for the injury report.
–When I looked at the Cavs schedule at the start of training camp, I said the best-case scenario is them starting 4-4. After the preseason, my expectations were lowered. They have continued to get better every game, shown more confidence, and the offense has started to come around even with all sorts of injuries and a constantly changing big-man rotation.
–O.J. Mayo was hanging out in the hallway outside the Cavs locker room after the game. He got a steady stream of hellos from players, agent-types, hangers on, and even a handshake from Mike Brown. Meanwhile, nobody seemed to pay any attention to Penny Marshall.
Quotes
Mike Brown: “When our defense shows up, we give ourselves a pretty good chance to win and it showed up in the fourth.
LeBron: “This is the best offensively that we have played in three years. The way we are getting the ball upcourt, sharing the ball, and getting into our rhythm, this is the best we’ve played this season.
Mike Dunleavy: “Ilgauskas made some big shots. They set him up with LeBron penetration and we had to help.”

Gooden has been a beast!
It’s great to see us running and offense and maintaining the lead when Lebron is on the bench.
Let’s fix that “Cavs at Kings” title…

I think you mean “Cavs at Clippers”, not “Cavs at Kings”
Game ball: Damon Jones.
Thank you for hitting free throws in the final minute.
We won this game thanks to our dominant front line, right down to new backup PF, Ira Newble. The guards limited their shots, shooting well in the process, and the frontcourt won this game.
Go Cavs!

Z really looks good. So glad to see him playing 2-man with LeBron. That might be the x-factor to this season, being able to get solid production out of Z.
If the cavs keep this up, alan’s friend may go comatose earlier than expected!
Yet again, Mr. Windhorst predicts doom and gloom for the Cavs and just as he was wrong in most of his Cavs predictions last year, he is wrong again so far.
It is clear to the trained eye that the Cavs are playing like a championship-caliber team, insomuch as when it comes to the final quarter, their defensive pressure and overall intensity pick up and they give themselves a chance to win. That has been true of every game so far save for the Dallas game. That’s the sign a quality club, folks. I used to watch teams like the Celtics and Lakers do this in the 80’s. The sense those teams gave was that they could win every night. I defy anyone to tell me that the Cavs don’t look like that kind of team right now. And that’s with early injuries and key components not playing!
Oh, and despite what anyone may say, LBJ is clearly the best player in the league. His command of all facets of the game ( save perhaps the FT’s and jump shots ) INCLUDING defense now is absolutely a joy to watch.
Mr. Windhorst might want to re-evaluate his comment before the season about this season being a “transition year” for the Cavs. That is if he wants to save any face this season!
The Genius has…spoken!
Z continues to astound me!! WOW!! another amazing game!!
Gooden was incredible but I am still amazed at how good he can be one night and how awful he can be the next. NO CONSISTENCY!! if he could play like this night in and night out, he would be an all star!!
I dont know what is worse… lebron’s continued struggles from the line or Boobie’s continued foul trouble in the first half!! BOTH VERY ANNOYING!!! BOTH HAVE TO BE FIXED!!!
DEVIN BROWN CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AS WELL AS OUR OFFENSE!!! Looks so much better than last year!!! and tonight was the first night I saw our defense behave like last years!! great lock down defense in the 2nd half
last but not least, I found it intersting that hughes and pavlovic saw no playing time whatsoever in the 4th quarter!!! HMMM, very intersting…. its nice to see 16 million dollars sitting on the bench when we need them the most!!!
great win tonight!!! This team looks good!! we should be proud of them!!! GO CAVS!!!!! oh yeah, genius is a loser!
I was at the game tonight and the Cavs looked very active on offense in the fourth quarter (and really for the whole game). It’s not something we saw with consistency last year, and it seems to be a good sign in the 7th game of the season. Lots of cuts, good passes, and people finishing. If Brown can keep getting good production out of his bench (Brown, Newble, Jones), the Cavs could really have something here.
Good defense by the Cleveland Cavaliers drama boys, if only we could patch up the difference, this will be a Cleveland good season. They are running, switching in defense, rebounding see those efforts. We don’t have yet the Cavaliers team down.
I which I could see some Cavaliers games live. I was looking for tickets all the good seats on ticketmaster were taken I had to check broker. And man you don’t want to do that especially for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thanks god there sites like Ticketwood which work as comparators here is the site

Thoughts on last night’s Cavs win in LA:
- LeBron James has been the best player in the league during this trip. He is a force offensively, he’s passing well out of the double team, and he’s defending the opponent’s biggest threat down the stretch. We’re beginning to see an air of inevitability at the end of close games.
- Ilgauskas was very effective again, making the Clippers pay when they double-teamed LeBron off of the pick and roll. I’m not sure how long he can keep it up (38 minutes again last night), but his production has been a difference-maker so far, making up the offense that Varejao and Marshall would (or wouldn’t) provide.
- At the same time, the offense seems to be more effective with Z as the second scoring option. When Hughes, Pavlovic or Gibson have been thrust into that role, the results have been hit-and-miss (quite literally). Z taking on the secondary scoring role allows the wing players to pick their spots, which should make them more efficient.
- There’s still one more game, but any Cavs fan has to be happy with this West Coast trip so far. Not only have the Cavs won 3 games, but the 2 games they lost both required playoff teams (Phoenix, Utah) to get near-heroic efforts from their stars (Nash, Deron Williams) to beat the Cavaliers at home. Yes, the Cavs could waste this progress by coming out flat tonight against Denver, then again on Wednesday against Orlando, but right now things are looking very good for the wine and gold.
- Still, the Cavs wins have come against the Knicks, the Warriors, the Kings and the Clippers. Not really a championship contender in that list. At least they haven’t had a letdown game yet. That’s progress for this team.
Go Cavs.
Mike C.
Britney Asbourne? Catchy.
i don’t care how many times they beat the likes of a warrior ,clipper , and a king , throughout this long season , their shortcomings will be exposed . you will see lack of play making from the point position , lack of shooting from the shooting guard position , and lack of offense/offense creativity from the coaching .these are things that can not be hidden in an 82 game season , especially once you start playing against the elites(mavs, spurs, suns, jazz, rockets).i hope these victories against inferior opponents does not make management rest(like they did this summer) and create this false illusion that their roster is good as is.
Outstanding road trip by the Cavs thus far, and right now LeBron is definitely playing with a purpose. With a little luck, the Cavs could conceivably be 4-1 on this West Coast swing. Awesome.
The “given goal?” Have you guys ever watched a basketball game before?
Priceless.
Mike C. – you’re absolutely right. At this point, it’s just about scrapping to get W’s. Obviously this team is raw right now. Pavlovic and Hughes have hurt more than helped, Varajeo’s not here, Marshall’s not here, Snow’s not here, Damon Jones is logging big minutes, Gibson hasn’t learned to stay out of foul trouble – and yet, they’ve quietly put together 4 wins in 7 games. Austin Carr said it best in his blog – they’re thinking a lot on defense – not reacting. And once they start reacting, they’ll will be back in really good form.
What’s nice about this so far is we really haven’t needed any 50 point performances from LeBron like I thought we would. He’s never really going to go off when Z is on the court anyway. When Marshall comes back and they play small LeBron might torch some teams, but for now, they’re working through Z.
I’m wondering if Z put in some serious extra time this summer or if he has been hiding an injury or something. He’s showing me moves this year that I haven’t seen him do in the last 3 year. When he pump faked from 20, put the ball on the deck with his LEFT HAND, made a sweeping hook that just missed with his LEFT HAND, and then tipped it IN with his left hand – all with about 4 clippers surrounding him – I fell OUT OF MY SEAT! He’s bringing that up and under move. I’m just in awe right now at how well he is playing on offense. I certainly hope he can keep it up. I’m just glad he doesn’t do that falling away 1 handed hook that he started resorting to last year.
I wonder if he’s stronger now or something. Last year whenever he tried to back people down – he would get pushed out of the paint. That doesn’t seem to be happening this year.
Anyway, Cavs need to just keep scrapping together for wins. By the end of the season, if everyone is healthy, the defense will be better than last year (if Varajeo is back) now that we have Devin Brown, and our offense is already better than it was at any time last year. This is definitely a team built for long playoff series. I just hope they don’t play down to their competition like they did last year.
