Cavs having a rough patch
Posted October 4th, 2007 by Brian Windhorst
After two years of virtually nothing but good news coming out of Cavsland, this summer and early fall have been a bit of a shock to the system. Some of it is understandable and some of it isn’t, but it surely seems like I’ve written more negative-toned stories about the franchise over the last 10 days than the previous year.
The latest being about Shannon Brown getting in a fight at a bar. The video that has been on TV shows Shannon getting the worst of it and there appears to be good reason for him to be upset. The Cavs have done some homework, too, and have dug up a bunch of other details behind the scenes that support Shannon’s side. However, I’ve read the police reports and Shannon is accused of breaking the club rules and hitting a bouncer in the face. Who knows if the police will bring charges, but it wasn’t a good incident from either side based on my viewpoint.
Add the contract stalemates, Damon Jones’ trade demands and Eric Snow’s knee surgery and this has not been a great start to the season. In my opinion, there are more headaches to come. The trip to China in two weeks will be a great team-building exercise and a nice diversion for this group. But take it from someone who has spent a period of time in the Far East, it will take a week for them to get right when they come home. Because they are going in the middle of the preseason instead of now — when a bunch of teams are in Europe and Hawaii — it will have a lag until nearly the start of the regular season I suspect. Trust me, it will show up. Then there’s that start of the season, a brutal schedule that immediately sends them to the West Coast for their toughest road trip of the season. Last year the Bulls went 1-6 on a West Coast trip in November and it took them a month of great play to recover.
But my job along with reporting this news to you is also to add perspective and so here it comes. All the problems the Cavs currently are dealing with are fixable and they have plenty of time to deal with all of it. Some adversity now pay actually pay off in the long run, the Cavs have been a team over the last few years that reacts well when challenged and they are certainly being challenged right now.
Here are the positives right now and they are significant. LeBron James is in great shape and is looking good in camp. The rest of the Cavs’ front line is healthy. There is a lot of optimism about Daniel Gibson and Shannon Brown from the coaching staff. There is also a lot of talk about more new offensive components being installed by Mike Brown. I am from Missouri on that one, I’ll be watching closely in the preseason and reporting to you. But so far the players are positive about it.

I loved reading Ferry’s prepared statement: ”We know Shannon is a person of high character, and what he experienced several nights ago was very upsetting.” Yes, nothing says “high character” than strutting into a club with a dress code while wearing a baseball hat and a hoodie. He was probably there to collect trinkets for the poor.
But on the bright side, I’m positively delighted that Sharon Reed was there to bring folks this “exclusive” story. Granted, Shannon Brown is an extremely sexy woman herself, but who better to be the first to show people that exclusive video than an anchorbroad who stripped down to her birthday suit for that mass nudie downtown photoshoot. Ted Koppel would only strip down to his boxers.

Hey -
Any news on the cavs having interest in newly released Dan Dickau?
I would like to see the Cavs bring in more basketball IQ guys to play with Lebron, not sure if he exactly fits the mold with what they want as he is a bit of a defensive liability, but he can run an offense.
Do you think the Cavs have interest at all?
October 4th, 2007 at 11:54 am
You’re a little late, Zack. As lousy as Dickau is, he’s already been plucked off the waiver wire by the Clippers.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Eh, if going into a club with a hat on is the worst of this team’s legal problems, I’ll take it. But seriously, Alan, you think wearing a hat and hoodie makes Shannon Brown a “questionable” character? Besides, if you actually watch the all the reports on 19’s website, you’d know that Shannon had permission from the club’s owners to wear a hat, as do most celebrities who go to the club.
This isn’t a non-story…it should be reported. But this is also hardly a big deal.

alan t. ever so obsessed with BW’s blogs always has to be the first.
i mean you know are a loser when the first thing you do everyday is come this same spot so you can jump on any negativity associated with the cavs
October 4th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
cool, thanks for the heads-up alan. didn’t see any news about dickau at all after he was released.
October 4th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Nah, John. I’m rarely first, haven’t been for months. I’ve just taken the past two days off from work, this blog sometimes is fun, so I’ve posted a lot over the past two days. But thanks for your Cavs opinion, it sure added a lot to the discussion. What did you think of doc’s blue heron remark? I’m still chuckling about it.
October 4th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Dan Dickau??? I’ve got to agree with alan t. on that one-Dickau is a skinny non-athletic short weak slow 12th man. Thank goodness we passed on that stiff.
At least we have Laaaaary Huuuuuughes.

Lebron is a carpetbagger. A wannabe, the nouveaux rich always like the Yankees. They think it’s cool. It’s a complex thing.

“Nah, John. I’m rarely first, haven’t been for months. I’ve just taken the past two days off from work, this blog sometimes is fun, so I’ve posted a lot over the past two days. You may not be first everytime jackass, but you don’t fool anyone. You’ve already have read any new blog entry and are waiting to jump on anything anyone else says in the off-chance you can’t think of anything to retort on immediately from Brian’s blog.
And posted a lot over the past 2 days only??? Get real - go thru every blog entry over the last 2 months, from the moment your coma emergency ended (allegedly), you practically have every 3rd post on average and post into the wee hours anytime something you consider humorous enters that pea brain of yours. Its hard to ignore your idiocy when its so prevalent here.
And once more, you seriously have the gall to call someone out for posting something not exactly related to the blog entry? DO NOT EVER call anyone out for that when 90% of everything that you spew is unrelated to the topic at hand.
Face it man, you got nothing - being negative and ridiculing others is what your life is about. Like I said before, find a coma of your own and just let it end now. You’d seriously be doing yourself a huge favor.
October 5th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
I was there when Shannon got punked. It was not his fault whatsoever. The bouncers were picking on him for wearing a hat, which is against Liquid’s dress code. But the owner specifically exempted Cavs players from having to comply with that dress code. So the bouncers got physical with him, trying to make him take off his hat, and Shannon tried to plead his case that he was on the cavs…the bouncers didn’t recognize him. Anyway, the report of him punching a bouncer in the face is complete b.s. All the bouncers got on a big power trip and roughed him up pretty good. It was completely unwarranted, unnecessary, and excessive.
October 5th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Rick, you’ve got serious anger issues, dude. My prescription is chicken soup and new age music. Some Yanni and Tesh for the soul. Try it, it works. PETA used it on Michael Vick’s dogs, and now they all live together in perfect harmony at John Amaechi’s house.
October 5th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
Pat, the place is called “Liquid?” Who names a club “Liquid?”
October 5th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
Who names a kid Alan??
And I got anger issues? What do you call your idoicy throughout the history of this blog? Let it go man…go see the sun one day…hey, the Indians are up 1-0 - you can get on that blog, scream at that organization and wonder why they only won by 8 runs, find some fault with CC and his 6 walks. You know you have it in you - go seize the day over there until the playoffs are done…
October 5th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
By the way comaguy, thanks for your opinion…sure added a whole lot to this discussion. Why don’t you stick to the topic at hand?
October 5th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Silly pretentious name or not, I’m curious, Pat. That club must not be a small room. So how was it that you were around at the exact time the bouncers first confronted Brown, as well as the exact time that Brown snuck back in?
Anyway, who cares if he gets into a bar fight. Maybe this is a good thing, most of the guys on the Cavaliers play like the elephant that’s scared of the mouse. I’d like to see if Brown has any NBA talent, or if he’s just another chump that will be playing in Europe in three years. I’d like to see him get major minutes. Though unless a rash of guys go down with an injury bug, I don’t see how he’ll ever get the playing time to prove himself.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Actually, “Rick,” I’m one of the few people that seemed to always support Shapiro when the Indians were having problems. I’ve long felt he’s a magician that’s somehow been able to turn water into wine, with no room for error. Why do Ferry and the Cavaliers get the sacred cow treatment? I’ve never been able to understand that. Perhaps that’s one of the topics you should discuss with your shrink. If you don’t beat him to death first.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
“Alan”, since after your initial post or 2 you completely go off the deep end in every blog, why the quotes around my name? What point are you trying to prove? That you’ve outsmarted yourself in thinking that its not my real name? That you’re an asshat beyond all measure? That you’re just a shriveled little dick who feels triumphant with all the attention I and others here give you due to your pissy attitude and just telling you to go away?
And additionally, is this your new strategy on me…using the anger card? Guess we’re past the stalking and joehoops accusations. Here’s a clue - the anger thing ain’t gonna work either because it’s not anger. It’s pity, maybe even apathy at the incessant idiocy you continue to show here.
Granted, Ferry hasn’t done a great job. How is harping on that day after day, hour upon hour, post upon post going to change that? Everyone here is in agreement he’s made major boneheaded moves - you are radical about it. That Yanni crap you spoke of before? Have you tried it yet? You know, before you cast ridiculous observations, stop, count to 10 and look inward. Just a thought.
October 5th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
By the way, I’m out for the weekend so you have 3 days to come up with a witty retort comaguy. Make us proud “alan”!
October 5th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
“Asshat.” “Shriveled little dick.” “Jackass.” “Pissy.” Peabrain.” Wow, Rick. Edge, wit and command of the English language, I’m surprised they didn’t offer you Pluto’s job.
October 6th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Get a room, you two.
Rick you need help especially. It seems you can not discuss the Cavs without a verbal assault on those you discuss with. Additionally, there is really no Cavs discussion between you two in the first place. More like a close relationship turned bad. So I suggest lots and lots of make up sex. Get a room, you two.
October 6th, 2007 at 11:42 am
Carpetbagger? He’s from the area moron. So the hell what if he’s a front runner. Who cares. Time to grow up.
As for Shannon’s beat down…It’s funny that they didn’t recognize him, but not funny that they were way too aggressive. If he’s got a case, it’ll be settled.
October 6th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Bouncers may not be the most likeable group in general, but why not just take the stupid hat off?
October 6th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
But larry, that would make too much sense for a kid with a warped sense of entitlement. Must think he’s still in high school receiving high praise for being a McDonald’s All-American.
October 7th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
I saw Boatshoes in Little Italy last night. Does that count as a celebrity sighting? His kids are cute. He’s tall. He has a surprisingly severe case of acne (scarred cheeks and some active pustules as well). And, tragically, he was sans boatshoes.
October 7th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Ferry’s face has “active pustules?” Eeewww. Gross. That’s even more sick than this.

From Missouri? Windhorst, that’s a fine new expression you’ve introduced me to. Thanks!
October 8th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
With Ferry busy dumper-diving for Hornets, you’d think he’d have enough sense to pick up Marc Jackson for dirt cheap, and then kick Varejao to the curb.
October 9th, 2007 at 1:01 am
I was on euroleague.net checking out what Trajan Langdon is up to, and I noticed that Marc Jackson has just been scooped up a Greek team. Oh, well.
October 9th, 2007 at 11:42 am
Starting with the statement, “lets make it simple and see if we can explain this without getting into an economic diatribe,” the Cavs column was fairly insulting to BJ readers today.
I especially liked the part where Gilbert said his company is doing great, and in case you don’t believe it this information has been confirmed by his employees in the Cavs’ front office. That’s the kind of aggressive research that threatens to cross over into the economic treatise (I think ‘diatribe’ isn’t the word BW was going for) category.
To be honest, I don’t care about the economics. The bottom line: Ferry sat on his hands all summer and, so far, it looks like the Cavs are replacing Pavlovic and Verajao with Simmons and some guy who’s name I can’t even remember.
October 9th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Hey Larry, Ferry didn’t sit on his hands all summer, they attempted to make the team better. That isn’t done by overpaying for Pavlovic and Varejao, and Alan if you think Varejao has leverage you are more un informed than I thought. The idea that we can’t live without his energy and defense is a point, but let’s not make him out to be the next Rodman here. He has no leverage, say they stay in Europe. ok if they try to come back to the States they are still Restricted free agents, and they will make more money over here than in Europe. Alan, you can’t whine about signing Wesley last year and then complain we didn’t sign Marc Jackson, are you kidding me, Marc Jackson that is your answer, a over the hill player who can hit the face up J but brings nothing else to the table, we have a big who is supposed to shoot and that is Marshall. Larry we are replacing Pavlovic with Devin Brown and Shannon Brown lets see how it plays out. For all who think we suddenly got that much worse we will see, but the only teams that made moves over the summer were the Celts and the Magic who overpaid for Lewis and will be complaining in 2 years with his contract. Bulls did nothing, along with other teams. Letting the young kids play is a good thing, lets see how it plays out.
October 9th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
The Rockets made some moves, including moves that would have been doable for the Cavs. The Suns also made at least one move I can think of off hand. It seems like Golden State also resigned some players, which the Cavs failed to do.
All I read this summer was how all the other GMs were on vacation too and Ferry’s going to be patient–If all he does is re-sign his restricted free agents everything’s going to be fine. He hasn’t done that yet.
Hopefully Shannon Brown will be a revelation and Gibson will continue to improve. But the team’s second biggest strength last year was its depth on the front line and that’s not there right now. I’ll bet Verajao can make a pretty penny in Rio and I hear the weather’s fairly nice in February.
October 9th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Oh, come on Brian. Stop writing things I never wrote.
Marc Jackson, for one, is a perfect stop-gap type player to fill in for Varejao. You can sign a guy like that for cheap, a one-year deal, and would produce numbers in the neighborhood of Varejao. Then let Varejao and his agent go curl each other’s hair while still holding on to Varejao’s rights.
The fact is, unless that Simmons kid is able to immediately show something decent given the need to give him increased playing time, Varejao’s leverage increases everyday. For God’s sakes, Ferry imposed three more years of Ilgauskas, and now there’s no backup. That’s like giving Dick Cheney three more years without spare Energizer batteries for his pacemaker. Not a chance in hell.
And who said anything about Varejao being another Rodman? It was Reverend Pluto that compared Varejao to Rodman, not me.
October 10th, 2007 at 10:27 am
Alan, Marc Jackson averaged 7 points a game in 18 minutes, the same as Marshall, so that is your idea of pressurring Varejao’s agent huh? Can’t believe you are not a Gm yet, once again you just babble on about nothing and think it is cute. I enjoy reading your ramblings because it just shows your basketball ignorance. You would not be happy no matter what the Cavs do. If you think Kapono deserves the full mid level you are crazy as well, Toronto overpaid for him, that is what teams do to acquire pieces they believe they need, just like we did for Hughes, but at the time these players are coming off great years. All Kapono does is shoot, he wasn’t even in the rotation for the Heat in the playoffs that much, at least Varejao plays D and rebounds. And no Devin Brown is not Pavlovic, but we also have Shannon Brown and Gibson to help fill the position, so let’s see how it plays out.
October 10th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
Brian, really, are you awake? Your first sentence is just … well … idiotic. Jackson plays Varejao’s position. What more needs to be said? Right now there’s nobody else, unless you count some new skinny kid with long arms. Devin Brown, a career journeyman in the cheese mold of Damon Jones, was brought in for one season for no other reason than Pavlovic isn’t there. Now the Cavaliers really don’t need Pavlovic. It’s Luke Jackson time, too many guys playing the same position.
But Varejao’s position is different, both with respect to the court and with respect to his bargaining position. Way different. They’ve got a grossly overpaid guy with Bernie Kosar-like declining skills for three more seasons. People will be counting the days left on that contract like they did with Ferry’s player contract. Other than Simmons, who else is there? So you sign Marc Jackson for a year, a guy that could aptly fill Varejao’s position for one season. And if Varejao’s agent and Ferry reach terms, then fine. If not, that’s fine, too. But instead, they’ve painted themselves into a corner. Nobody left on the free agent market. And they can’t trade Gooden, which is the only reason Gooden was signed in the first place, because Varejao ain’t there. It’s a Catch-22, and this is all Ferry’s doing.
October 10th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
So what you’re saying is…if the Cavs had signed Marc Jackson first, before you were able to share this brilliant plan of yours to force Varajeo into camp, then you would have applauded the move and said it was the best thing Ferry had ever done, right? Seriously comaguy? Who here doesn’t believe that you wouldn’t be the first in this blog to come post of how moronic and ridiculous the move was, make some utter ridiculous comment of how Ferry should be wasting his time planting false rumors with the media instead of signing a washed up player like Marc Jackson, yada yada. You’re just a schmuk man - everything the Cavs do is rotten, everything you say is golden…can’t have it both ways comaguy.
October 10th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Oh, in case I wasn’t making myself clear, Brian, when I was speaking of those Bernie Kosar-like declining skills with three years remaining, I was referring to Ilgauskas, I was not referring to Marshall. Varejao’s plays Ilgauskas’ position as well as a purported “power” forward position. Nobody else really plays Varejao’s position, I’m really not sure what position Marshall plays, and nobody else does, either, which is why Varejao’s agent still has some firm footing. I’m pretty sure that Marshall doesn’t know what position Marshall plays, either.
Speaking of Marshall, I went back and enjoyed reading the always effervescent high-on-life columnist stylings of Reverend Pluto after Marshall was signed. Classic post-1996 crazy Pluto. Kiss the local management’s ring, and then write something ludicrous.
“General manager Danny Ferry made a shrewd move in signing the 32-year-old power forward. Ferry realized that it might be a long shot finding a point guard who can consistently make long shots. He knew it was possible Eric Snow could be the starting point guard. So he looked for the best, most experienced free-agent shooter available — and that was Marshall.”
October 10th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Rick, if you’re going to be your usual juvenile self and call me names, at least spell your Yiddish correctly. I’m a “schmuck.”
And no, Rick, I wouldn’t have said it was the best thing that Ferry had ever done. But it would have been the most prudent thing he’s ever done. Obviously it wouldn’t have “forced” Varejao into camp. But signing Marc Jackson is something he could have easily done six weeks ago, and it would have proven to people that Ferry has some semblance of foresight. Now what’s the backup plan? Some new kid with stretchy arms, and a tall 34-year-old guy who plays like he’s 84, only he does it while stumbling around the three-point arc on both offense and defense. Varejao isn’t Karl Malone, but at least he doesn’t loiter.
October 10th, 2007 at 8:18 pm
The best thing Ferry ever did was hit that 40-foot turnaround jumper against Kentucky.
Or was that Laettner?
October 11th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
It was Mark Alarie. Isn’t anyone on this newspaper staff going to comment on our pitiful display the other night? 62 points? I don’t care that Lebron played 15 minutes. Did anyone watch that game? Hughes has lost it. He has ZERO confidence now. He has no business shooting anything other than layups. Bald Z looked and played like Chunk from the Goonies. Isn’t anyone the least bit concerned?
October 11th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Well, you know, if the only thing you get from my relatively few posts is that I’m juvenile and a name caller, so be it. I’d rather be that than thought of as a negative, angry soul who has nothing going for him in his life and has to post countless times on a sports blog to feel validated.
I’ll say it again…I understand apathy towards Ferry, I understand disappointment towards his moves in the past. I understand that no matter what an organization does, there will be detractors. What I don’t get is this misguided hostility from you day after day, post after post, towards the Cavs, Ferry, Pluto, Windhorst, and whatever else - if a sports team makes you feel this much hatred, I truly can’t imagine what kind of life you live. You can end it you know, comaguy. I mean, if that comagirl isn’t out there for you, why bother with anything really. The Cavs, this blog, its all meaningless really if all it does is anger you. WHO keeps a freaking quote from a sportswriter and brings it up 3 years after the fact to prove a meaningless point??? How sad are you really man??? We all knew Donyell wasn’t worth it in that first year, we agree with it, you harp and harp and harp on it and bringing up an article from years ago?? Dude, relax, go see the sun, take in a comedy, get a blowup doll, just anything to get your mind and life away from the Cavs for a week or two.
Now, sit and think on that a while but I’m sure you’ll come back with a witty (in your sad, demented world only) and defensive reply. Because one thing we all also know is that this comaguy can’t stay away from this blog - he needs the attention. Oh, and make sure you spellcheck every word I wrote here and let me know of anything else I may have mispelled. Unlike you, I won’t make another post after the fact saying I mispelled something and here I am again to correct it!
October 11th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
I don’t spellcheck, Rick. Don’t even know how to use it. But when a guy take time out from his very busy schedule, tucks away his Crayola Crayons and his Elmer’s Glue into his toybox, and then throws a tantrum and calls me names, I’d at least appreciate it if he would use proper Yiddish. I grew up with that sh*t, so at least have the good graces and common courtesy to use it properly if it’s going to be directed at me. I’m a “schmuck.”
By the way, doc, who was Chunk? It’s been a lot of years, I liked that Goonies movie a lot, but I don’t remember who Chunk was.
October 11th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Windhorst - I’m surprised at your lack of commentary on LeBron’s decision to wear a Yankees cap to Game 1 of the ALDS. I did read the paragraph you wrote on the topic for ESPN, but McManamon’s column left a lot to be desired (namely Mr. Pluto).
Personally, I think it’s completely ridiculous for a city to turn its back on LeBron because he showed his support for HIS favorite baseball team. Bad publicity? Sure, but it doesn’t call for the criticism he’s received. The Cavs don’t pay LeBron to be an uber-fan a la Drew Carrey. They pay him to win games (and hopefully championships). Hell, he could celebrate his first NBA championship wearing a Yankees cap and a Steelers jesery, with his face painted Maize and Blue.
If LeBron leaves for New York, it won’t be because he’s a Yankees fan. It will be because of poor management of the Cavs and an unsupportive fan base.
Alan - “schmuck” is an English transliteration of a Yiddish word. Yiddish, in it’s written form, uses Hebrew characters. So when writing the word in English, it’s sufficient to use a phonetic spelling. Thus, “schmuck” and “schmuk” are both correct.
October 11th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Chunk = http://lacrudarealidad.blogsome.com/uploads/lacrudarealidad/sloth-goonies.jpg
Even though i don’t miss the good Reverend Pluto, this McManomaman dude is horrendous. You know how you feel embarrassed for someone who farts in public or is caught picking their nose when you pull up alongside them at a red light? That’s how I feel when I read Pat’s Points or whatever the hell it is. He may want to mix in some coherence and normal syntax the next time he writes a column. The ABJ is in danger of falling behind the Canton Repository in area prestige. And you notice how Reverend Pluto doesn’t write as much since his boy Charlie Frye got smoked out of town? You can tell he’s heartbroken. Nothing beats that profile he wrote about Frye the day before the Steelers game about how the local boy was such a fighter and never gave up and how he earned this opportunity and on and on….. classic. Just wait for next year when he clamors for Savage to take a flyer on Julian Edelman in the 2008 draft.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Marc, I know we’re both members of the tribe, and I’m not talking about the Indians, so we both know that schmuck has only one correct English spelling. Only a goy like Rick would put corned beef and pastrami on white bread, and only a goy would spell it any other way than schmuck. In fact, I just checked with Webster’s online, and even they have it only as schmuck. I’m a schmuck.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:46 pm
Hey, doc, what’s the deal, I clicked on your link for Chunk, and it says it’s forbidden.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Oh, and who the hell is Julian Edelman. Some Jewish kid is playing football?
October 12th, 2007 at 10:02 am
His name was actually “Sloth”. Chunk was the fat kid. http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Football/Pix/gallery/2004/05/26/timzaccheo.jpg
Edeleman is Kent St QB.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Alan, if you think Marc Jackson can fill in for Varejao, you continue to look ignorant. The man plays no D and doesn’t rebound. Just keeping you on board with reality Alan, and what was idiotic the fact that I actually had stats to back up my thought or that you actually said in a blog earlier that signing Jackson would have provided Varejao’s agent with leverage. I know you write so many stupid entries that you lose track of reality but please try to stay up with the rest of us humans. Pet your dog and suck on that thumb Alan and have a nice evening watching the Celts or Mavs or whatever bandwagon you are riding this week.
