Varejao situation and breakdown

Posted July 4th, 2007 by Brian Windhorst

I’m the middle of an 18-hour travel day here but I have a few minutes. I gotten some various e-mails on the Anderson Varejao story I wrote for today’s paper. Please allow me to elaborate. In it, I quote an NBA executive, and I’ll tell you now that is it a general manager but not from the Central Division, who has been told by Varejao’s representation that he has an offer above the mid-level exception. I expected the mid-level to be between $5.5-$6 million, so higher to start.

I personally speculated it could’ve been the Grizzlies, but my source did not tell me that. But this morning I read about new Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace in South America to meet with Andres Nocioni. It may be the Grizzlies after Varejao, it may not be. Maybe it is from a team that wants to do a sign-and-trade with the Cavs. It may be that there is no offer and there’s posturing going on. But I know what is being put out there and so I reported it.

Let me just add two points here: Even if it is overpaying a little, were someone actually able to sign Varejao to a deal that averaged $7-$8 million per season, the feel is the Cavs would likely match. Athletic big men are hard to find and Varejao is a potential long-term replacement for Zydrunas Ilgauskas. If it gets to $10 million a season, then it’s a different story. Secondly, with Darko Millcic becoming an unrestricted free agent today, the game totally changes. Darko is younger and has more upside, especially on offense, than Varejao. With no restricted status to deal with, he may become more attactive than Varejao all of a sudden.

Also, Darko has the same agent, Marc Cornstein, as Sasha Pavlovic. So with all this stuff going on, and with Cornstein spewing venom at the Magic (and it sounds like he’s got a point) Pavlovic is on the back burner for now. It seems having Pavlovic back is a large priority for Danny Ferry, so his contacts of players like Morris Peterson, Matt Carroll and the like are probably backup plans if Sasha talks go poorly.

  1. LEBRON JAMES Says:

I say let them both go. all you need is me, i am the man. I am Lebron dammit.

  2. J.Quarles Says:

The Cavs are in a pretty tough position having made some really bad decisions when they did have money under the cap (D. Jones, I. Newble, L. Hughes). It is funny that our needs are about the same, some outside shooting at guard, a point guard and ensuring a solid backup at power forward/center.
I hope we can keep both Sasha and Andy and totally agree with you about Darko Millcic. Do we have any interest in Jamaal Magloire or Mikki Moore?
The point guard I would love to see here is Mo Williams.

  3. Darko's Mom Says:

I’d love to see Darko in a Cleveland uniform… Larry Brown nearly destroyed the kid in Detroit… Darko is just starting to come out of that demoralizing three years and his up-side is great. He is only now starting to show his potential. Convince him to sign for the mid-level for a year as a showcase test run. He could flourish in Cleveland and go for the big money next year when he succeeds. Makes sense for all considered. It’s a win-win for all. The kid is only going to get better. 7 footers with a nice shooter’s touch don’t grow on trees. Throw in a chip on his shoulder and an attitude and you’ve got a great low-post presence not afraid to mix it up…. he’s a far cry from that distraught kid we saw languishing on the end of the Piston’s bench. He should be the one Cleveland targets.

  4. Darko Milicic has the angries at YAYsports! NBA Says:

[...] up on him, it seems that it’s actually fans of the Cavaliers who want a piece of Darko. Even Brian Windhorst comments that this is a possibility, especially with Anderson Varajeo rumored to have a big, overpriced deal [...]

  6. kj Says:

i know everyone likes to bash a GM who’s terrible signings only lead to an eastern conference championship in his second year at the helm, j quarles, but in fairness, newble was signed by the TRUE idiot paxson to that silly contract, not ferry. yes, ferry HAD TO overpay hughes but jones’ deal wasn’t that bad, moneywise…

  7. JB Says:

Please…CAVS don’t give Varejao the big money…He is not worth. Trust me..
We need offense…. If they do, I’ll remind you next year what a mistake it was.

  8. Reality Check Says:

Still laughing at Detroit for passing on Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh….for Darko, only to parko his butto on the bencho for 3 years, a completely wasted #2 pick. That’s right, Pistons, you are a laughing stock!

If we break the bank to re-sign Andy and Sasha, how have we improved the team? Can we expect either to improve THAT much, to the point we could beat the Spurs? No, there has to be a MAJOR, MAJOR move…along with, oh, I don’t know…ADDING AN OFFENSE. Ferry, don’t make the mistake of thinking you are anywhere close to reaching the Finals again, let along WINNING them. Arenas and Wade could’ve led either team to an upset of the Cavs. They’re coming back, ya know.

  9. kj Says:

oh yeah, “reality check” i’m so afraid of the wizards with arenas cuz they really handed it to the cavs last year in the playoffs…oh wait. the cavs won in six. next…

but wade is a real difference maker in the east! look how he lead his team without shaq in the line-up, why they were… umm, actually under .500.

are you people serious. do actually WATCH nba basketball?? jeebus…and don’t gimme that “wade won the nba title” crap. it’s all about shaq, fools…and as we saw in the recent playoffs, he’s too old to make a difference anymore come playoff time.

  10. Alan Tucker Says:

Crediting Ferry for the Cavs “reaching” the finals is like crediting Gerald Ford for ending the Vietnam war. Saying it’s absolutely preposterous would almost be an understatement.

And Brian, there’s a substantive difference between “reporting” and “disseminating.” Sorry, guy, but you have a tendency to spread unfounded rumors fast and loose. It’s the journalistic equivalent of watching that dude Kobayashi consume 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes, and then having to stand behind him.

Speaking of Kobayashi, yesterday he finally lost an eating contest! In the highly competitive world of professional eating, this is like Mike Tyson being floored by Buster Douglas.

  11. Reality Check Says:

kj…you’ve sunk to the level of “tool,” or A.T. Arenas dropped in 40+ on the Cavs, and if you think the Wiz don’t have the ability to upset us, you’re pretty naive. And Shaq may be aging, but WITH Wade (not alone), they can be a more potent 1-2 punch than we have, without question. Although Miami has apparently lost Kapono (as we stupidly did, as well), so they could hurt a bit. The point is, with Noah now in Chicago, and other superstars returning healthy, the Cavs will by no means have a waltz to the Finals again. And if Cleveland does not make a severe upgrade in talent, we will be forever a bridesmaid. That’s reality. Check?

  12. WTF? Says:

It’s funny that people think Cleveland should let Varejao walk because “we need offense.”

    1. The Cavs already have a scoring PF (Gooden) yet never run any plays for him, and

    2. Varejao is a defensive force. You can rip him for flopping, but the guy consistently derails opposing offenses in the 4th quarter by rebounding, drawing offensive fouls, or causing turnovers. And he’s still learning.

I guarantee that if the team lets him walk, you same fans are going to be talking about how the Cavs should sign a guy like Ruben Patterson because “we need defense.”

  13. Alan Tucker Says:

Referring to Gooden as a “scoring PF” is like referring to Craig Ehlo as a “scoring SG.” I honestly don’t think so.

It may also be helpful to note that if you want to have a play called for you, then the capability to remember it might come in handy. Perhaps our blog host can confirm this, but it’s reasonable to assume that Gooden is always the last guy to leave the locker room after a home game. Car keys can be hard to find.

  14. doc Says:

How does a beat reporter for a second rate midwestern local paper afford to jet off to the South Pacific for a vacation? Was he able to dupe Knight Ridder into paying for a “scouting trip” to check out some cannibal named Maui Kola who’s allegedly a ferocious rebounder?

  15. Alan Tucker Says:

doc, get with the current events, man. The Beacon Journal has had three owners in a little over a year. Knight Ridder had absolutely nothing to do with the blog host’s vacation nor with the rag…uh, I mean the publication he writes for. And don’t demean Maui Kola. He’s been described as a Polynesian Varejao.

  16. RFN Says:

kj, come on man. NONE of those signings helped us get to the finals. Great team defense instituted by Brown and James’ brilliance is what got us to the finals. Those were all bad signings (maybe not Jones), but what’s done is done. He needs to do MUCH better this time around.

  17. Alan Tucker Says:

Maybe not Jones? Jones wasn’t a bad signing? Four years of cap space? Good God, there was actually a period of time when Jones was so far down the row of plastic chairs, he was even playing behind THIS Ferry guy:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvOm7dPS0Uw

  18. Randy Says:

Please please please send Larry Hughes packing. Aside from being a career 40% shooting (Cleveland, his brick-firing is not an aberation) he’s a sulking me-first bad attitude teamate. His reported chemistry issues with Lebron won’t change, the dude wants to jack his 20 shots irregardless of situation. Get rid of this dude-don’t worry about equal value, get him off our roster so we can move forward.

Please forget about Delonte West. The dude looks like a thug, has more tatoos than Larry Hughes, and does not penetrate. Let’s focus on a true point guard who can penetrate and break down a defense and distribute the ball. Oh, and be a leader-not a thug.

  19. Dave Says:

If it were only that easy to trade Hughes…in the NBA salaries have to match up to a certain extent. No one wants to take on a contract like that, especially for a cold-shooting player with a vast injury history. Not only would we not get equal value for him in return (if anyone was actually willing to take him), but we’d still be burdoned with someone else’s bloated contract.

As for Varejao…I’d hate to see him go, but he’s not worth a huge contract. I hope to see Ferry get creative and see what he can conjure up. There’s no standing still because Chicago’s getting better, Toronto’s getting better, Orlando’s getting better…heck, even Atlanta, Boston and Milwaukee are getting better. With LeBron we’ll always be an elite team, but there will be other teams right there with us. Plus, it doesn’t seem like the West is going to be getting any weaker any time soon. Just as it seems like San Antonio, Dallas and Phoenix may be a year or so away from declining in talent (however slightly), teams like Denver, Portland, Utah and Golden State are poised to get better.

  20. Randy Says:

I’d trade Hughes and his attitude for somebody’s bloated point guard salary, at least that type of player can contribute here. (Steve Francis?).

If that doesn’t work, I’d trade Larry Hughes to anyone willing to give me a bologna sandwich with doritos thrown in. The guy is a negative factor in every respect-addition by substraction. (sorry Michael Reghi).

  21. Randy Says:

OK-I’ll settle for anything off of Taco Bell’s $.99 late night menu for Larry Huuuuuuuughes.

To think this guy got an additional $2M check after the CAVS won 50 games, criminal. And the guy still pouts? Sheeeesh.

  22. Alan Tucker Says:

Hughes landing on another team is a pipe dream. Just like the crazed delusion that James would sign a real extension simply because that imbecile Ferry exercised all available resources to go on a stiff spending spree. Unless Ferry is agreeable to taking six to eight Troy Hudsons in return, everybody is staying.

It absolutely sucks to be a Cavaliers fan. It’s like taking a cheese grater to my own nuts.

Oh, and it doesn’t make any difference, but if the stuff that various local sportswriters toss out there has a kernel of truth (I’ve seen Ouija boards with a higher and more reliable accuracy rate), Hughes technically got a $2 million bonus each of the last two seasons because they won 49, not 50. Enough to add a few more Bentleys to the fleet. The Lakers also would have won at least 49 if they played in the East, but hey, that’s totally besides the point. Glad Ferry agreed to the extra nonsense that Hughes’ agent stuck in there. It’s better than having $4 million go towards colon cancer research, or something utterly ridiculous like that.

By the way, doc has a point. How does our blog host afford it? Did ESPN ask him to write a feature about Fiji’s Arena Football League team?

  23. jmoe Says:

Unless the Cavs shake up this team bigtime they will not win a championship. Overspending on AV and SP will not help. Neither
is coordinated enough to help Lebron on offense. AV is a liability
with the basketball and SP can,t create off the dribble. Do whatever
you can to dump them and Hughes and Z and get some real athletes
in here such as RL and LR or Blatche or Artest. Somebody that can
shoot and somebody that can block shots and kick some butt or forget
beating even Orlando. Chicago will spend until they win. Danny Boy
you better kick baldy in the ass right now or its over.

  24. larry d. Says:

I heard Wesley sent him out there, in search of Bison Dele. Unfortunately, he returned with only a couple Finnan one-liners to show for the trip.

What’s everyone so down on Ferry for? He’s already signed Romeo and he’s been haggling with the Spurs for two weeks now, trying to pry Beno loose. It’s only July so he’s on track to surpass last summer’s haul.

  25. Russ Says:

If Brian wrote this blog on the plane this his vacation is tax deductible.

Darko is intriguing to picture in the cavs rotation and would have to be considered an upgrade at even his current potential. I like Varejao and it’s entertaining to see him frustrate offensive players. But I think it’s mainly due to his drawing charges and flopping which is not looked upon with respect by the other players in the league anymore. Big men who move there feet seem to have there way so I wouldn’t exactly say he’s a plus defender. Drawing charges and filling the lane after shots are part of a team’s defensive strategy. In general I’m not impressed by a 6′10” 240 forward whose solely tries to draw a charge against 6′0” guards off the dribble.

  26. Randy Says:

Alan-good stuff, but cheese grating to your nuts?!

I’m not that all disatisfied as a season ticket holder with going to the NBA finals, and I could care less what anybody says about the east conference. Let’s tweek the roster and keep movin……….while we are saddled with contracts, so is just about everyone.

Hughes wants everyone to kiss his sorry shooting ass, or he goes to his corner and pouts. Other than that…….let’s get a point guard and an offensive coach and get on with it. Cheese grating your nuts….not quite that bad!

  27. Alan Tucker Says:

Actually, Russ, if you re-read what he wrote, he’s not talking about Milicic being on the Cavs at all. He’s writing about Varejao’s value being diminished on the open market due to Milicic now being out there. Why screw around with an agent representing a restricted free agent when you can sign a better all-around player playing the same position, not to mention one that’s totally unrestricted.

What I find enlightening is that totally contrary to our blog host’s memorable giddy post from last summer, for the second straight year, it appears that none of the available veterans out there are going to come to the Cavs for that elusive “ring.” Grant Hill happily signs with Phoenix for the veteran’s exception of $1.2 million, and Ferry is out there begging some agent for a multi-year piece of the crumbs from Beno’s garlic bread. It would be ridiculous if it wasn’t so incredibly sad.

  28. kj Says:

hey “reality check”, i am going by REALITY!!! the cavs BEAT the wizards in LBJ’s first ever playoff series. of course, they could “upset” us!! any team in the playoffs can upset another team!! that why it’s called an upset! but the cavs would be favored in EVERY playoff match-up with ANY team in the east. fact.

oh, yeah, wade and shaq REALLY proved what a potent one-two punch they were this year. but your right, with shaq a year older and wade coming off major surgery and showing a propensity of getting injured every year, they CLEARLY will be the team to beat! jeebus..

i am dealing with FACTS, kids. the fact is that the cav went to the finals. whether you want to give ferry credit for it or not. whether you want to give brown credit or not. they beat all comers in the east and chicago getting a ben wallace replacement in the draft is NOT going to make them better than the cavs. natural improvement by sasha, gibson, brown, andy and most, importantly, LBJ will be enough IF ferry makes no other moves. would i like him to make a move? yes but i’m not gonna throw out the baby with the bath water. we MADE THE FINALS. it was not a fluke or stroke of luck. the best team wins 7-game series. and you would think you cavs fans, assuming you actually are cavs fans, would recognize that the MEGASTAR beats the team in the nba most often. remember the early 90’s? that’s why we can beat any team in the east. now, when we run up against a far more experinenced team in the finals with a near megastar, yes, we got defeated handily. but it was a valuable learning experinece just like the detroit series last year was. and i don’t expect the team to shoot that poorly in a series ever again. and on the plus side they held SA to their lowest point avg. of any of their series.

i am a cavs fan. i also know alot about NBA basketball, if i may immodest for a moment. so, i tend to look at the positives when it comes to the team i root for. now, i have critized Z as much as anyone has critized any player on this blog. i have also taken my shots at hughes. but the people on here lately with your, quite honestly, stupid predictions and warnings, have gone wayyyy to far the other way. and don’t give me that “realist” crap either cuz windy’s “realist” predictions lost to my “homer” predictions this season. so, ya know, what? the “homer’s” won this year. so, you self-decribed realists get to eat crow and most importantly, shut up for a while.

EVERY team in the east has AT LEAST as many serious flaws as the cavs and none of them have the great equalizer of those flaws, LBJ. so why the hell should i be playing “chicken little” like so many of you on here are? it makes no logical sense.

and the FACT is that both jones and marshall WON games for us in the last two years during the playoffs. quite frankly, that’s all i care about. that alone makes them decent signings. yes, marshall is getting old right before our eyes and yes, jones shooting stroke was not what it had been earlier in the year. it happens. and don’t forget how most of you were cheering both signings esp. after marshall hit 8 or so 3-pointers against the cavs the year before!

we have an owner that is spending money and will go into the luxury tax zone, where few ever tread, to try and win a title. which is more than modell or jacobs or dolan or gund or stepien et. al EVER did. so quit your bitchin’ and moanin’. and quit worrying about other teams and let other teams and cities worry about the cavs…

  29. kj Says:

oh yeah, tucker, too bad we misssed out on a guy who makes larry hughes seem like cal ripken. brilliant analysis, as always! when can we expect to read your work on ESPN.com? soon, i hope…

  30. Terry Pluto's Hair Says:

Uh, kj, I have to admit that I couldn’t quite finish every last word of your novel. However, I did read Chapter 5 (”EVERY team in the east has AT LEAST as many serious flaws as the cavs and none of them have the great equalizer of those flaws, LBJ”) and I have to ask you something.

Don’t you find it at all unsettling that every team in the East has improved itself since the end of the season, except for Cleveland? When you consider that just about everyone added a draft pick (or two) and even the worst teams (the Celtics, Bobcats, Magic, and Knicks) made major additions, are you not concerned about the East being a lot harder to win this year?

I think much of the complaining on this board has to do with people’s frustration that the Cavs have apparently hamstrung themselves and can’t make any major improvements. All this, during an offseason in which the draft was supposedly very deep and numerous star players are available in trades.

Also, you conclude Chapter 4 by mentioning that “the “homer’s” won this year. so, you self-decribed realists get to eat crow and most importantly, shut up for a while.”

I’m not sure I agree. Getting humiliated by an opponent in front of a bored national TV audience doesn’t seem like much of a victory. And it’s not just grumpy fans on this blog that think so. I believe most players and teams respect the Cavaliers even LESS than they did before the Finals. (BW has even alluded to the fact that none of the Cavs playoff opponents believe Cleveland was the better team.) Only a Cleveland sports team could appear in a championship game and somehow turn it into a “We Suck” commercial.

Your optimism is precious. But I don’t believe the maturation of Sasha Pavlovic, Anderson Varejao, (assuming either stays in Clev.) and Daniel Gibson is going to somehow propel the Cavaliers to a championship next season.

  31. El_B Says:

If Memphis offer too much to Varejao (i.e. more than say $6-7m per), we need to facilitate a sign and trade. Perhaps we could get Kyle Lowry (who seems like a decent point guard prospect) and Stro Swift (problematic but functional big) in return. Mike Miller would be better, but I think that’s asking too much realistically, and I can’t think who we could sweeten the deal with to get that to happen - a shame because he’d be a nice fit with LBJ IMHO. Also, getting Mo Pete would be better than retaining Sacha, so exploring some sign and trade options with Toronto might be a way to offer him a little more than the MLE.

  32. kj Says:

unbelievable, “t. plutos hair.” why should ANYONE care whether “none of the Cavs playoff opponents believe Cleveland was the better team.” how does that matter at all? is it not possible it sour grapes? in fact, is it not probable? funt, i even remember the cavs saying chicago “got lucky” to beat in ‘98. an how the bulls were “just one guy.” how’d that turn out? hmm? furthermore, getting no respect actually HELPS the cavs because they can continue to use that as that most common of sports motivation, “we don’t get any respect.”

your analysis of “everyone” in the east getting better than us is beyond “precious.” and how, nostradamus, do you know that? i trust you will enlighten us with how noah will propel the bulls past the cavs. or how stuckey will re-energize the pistons to the top of the conference. or how the magic, with the ever-dangerous rashard lewis ( who got man handled by ERIC FREAKIN’ SNOW when the cavs played the sonics. ERIC “SIX FEET, THREE INCHES” SNOW ). and yes, jason richardson strikes fear in any opponent just by the mere mention of his name. oh, and how could i forget the genius move of the knicks to get another low-post scoring, ball hogging malcontent to go along with the low-post scoring, ball-hogging malcontent they ALREADY have! yes, yes, i have seen the light!! the cavs will be lucky to make the playoffs! oh woe is me and clevleand!

we got swept in the nba finals. we have NEVER BEEN TO THE NBA FINALS. by any REASONABLE judgement the season was a major success. we have the best young player in the game and yes, gibson, pavs and brown WILL improve. trying watching an nba game sometime. you’ll see that it happens to a lot of guys on alot of teams. every year, even. but oh, wait! i forgot! we are a cleveland team, so it won’t happen for us! how could i be so blind??

oh my gosh! i almost forgot the celtics! they got a 32-year old jump shooter who just got BOTH ankles surgically repaired! curses! the celtics dynasty is sure to rise again now! oh, the horror for us lowly clevelanders! fate has struck us the cruelest of blows again!

  33. doc Says:

Grant Hill just signed for 1 million a year from the Suns. Um, weren’t we supposed to have veterans banging down our door to play with Lebron, especially coming off an appearance in the Finals? Im sure getting embarassed on national TV had nothing to do with Hill opting to sign for pennies with a team that got knocked out in the second round. Did Ferry forget to deodorize his sweaty boatshoes when meeting with Hill’s agent? A million bucks a year. That’s not even the mid level exception.

And KJ: Will the improvement of Sasha, Brown, and Gibson at least offset the just as likely continued decline of Z, Bongyell, ESnow, Hughes, etc etc? I sure hope so. It would be nice to at least tread water.

  34. Terry Pluto's Hair Says:

    1. “why should ANYONE care whether “none of the Cavs playoff opponents believe Cleveland was the better team.” how does that matter at all?”

I was making the point that it’s not just Cleveland fans that are down on the Cavaliers as a contender. The entire league in which they play thinks Cleveland is a pretender. I think that’s a significant consideration, even if you don’t.

    2. “your analysis of “everyone” in the east getting better than us is beyond “precious.” and how, nostradamus, do you know that?”

Uh, by using common sense. You talk about needing star players to win NBA games. But apparently you don’t consider Zach Randolph, Ray Allen, Jason Richardson, or Rashard Lewis in that class. That doesn’t even take into consideration the fact that each of those players represents a major upgrade from the guy that was there before them.

Not only that, but nearly every other team drafted between 1-3 young new players. I’m willing to guess those players will represent an improvement on most of those clubs’ rosters.

How can you not think every other team has made significant moves to improve themselves? Jesus, I didn’t say the Cavs would miss the playoffs next year. I simply pointed out that Cleveland is behind the curve on making offseason improvements.

    3. “yes, gibson, pavs and brown WILL improve. trying watching an nba game sometime. you’ll see that it happens to a lot of guys on alot of teams.”

First, I recognize that young players may improve. (See #2 above, genius.) Second, Pavlovic may not even play in Cleveland next year. Third, my point was that those guys may improve, but I don’t think it will be enough to push the Cavs over the top. And finally, “trying watching an nba game sometime” is not a sentence.

    4. “i almost forgot the celtics! they got a 32-year old jump shooter who just got BOTH ankles surgically repaired!”

As if you wouldn’t be trumpeting the Cavaliers as the 2008 NBA Champions right now had Ferry somehow swung a deal for Ray Allen.

  35. cavs fan Says:

how come we aint hearing nothin about mike bibby because bibby will be next pippen for lebron james whats good ferry step ur business up and start doing some sign n trade wit mike bibby.

  36. Randy Says:

I still can’t get over Alan cheese grating his nuts over the Cavs!

  37. No Name Says:

doc and Allen, it is called frequent flyer miles. I am sure with his travels to the far east last summer and throughout the season he racked up quite a lot of them.

And Allen, to say the Cavs suck just shows how naive you really are. The Cavs beat the Pistons, you are absent. After they get swept you come back and act like nothing happened. IMO, you lose all credibility. Can you possible say something positive about the Cavs withouth saying something negative.

As for the lack of moves, who says they are not doing anything? Just because ESPN does not say anything are we supposed to believe that Ferry is sitting on his hands doing nothing? Let’s see what happens once we are officially allowed to sign someone before jumping to conclusions. So far, there has only been one major free agent, Rashard Lewis, that supposedly has been signed.

  38. kj Says:

ahh, “t. pluto’s hair,” WHY do you think the league being down on the cavs as a contender is ” a significant consideration” exactly? what does that have to do with anything? really. i’m being serious.

ahh, and it’s “common sense” now to KNOW as you do, nostrdamus, that each team has made “signifcant upgrades.” funny, how you don’t mention what those teams have lost as well. and i gave you REASONS why those players who signed are not real threats. your posts, on the other hand, are long on opinions, short on facts and reason(s). and NONE of those players named are superstars. none. zilch.

and you state further that every team drafted 1-3 young players! you’re kidding? you mean that crappy teams get to draft young players? does this happen every year? look, genius, every crappy team drafts new players every year. and about 60% make a contribution to their teams the next year. and hardly ever does a rookie end up being the “final piece” to a championship contender. let me ask you again, cuz you seem to be avoiding it, how will stuckey help the pistons beat the cavs next year? how about noah for the bulls? do you not understand that randolph was a MORONIC pick-up for the knicks as they already have a low-post scorer in curry? see, i don’t know if you actually watch basketball but it’s kinda hard to have two low-post guys demanding the ball on the floor at the same time. oh and i’m the same guy who said the early coronation of the bulls last summer when they signed wallace was bunk. and i was proven right. and all the pundits and “realists” were wrong. again. how many times do they have to get it wrong before you guys start thinking for yourselves and stop worrying what writers and other teams think of the cavs?

and i would not have been thrilled if ferry got allen by giving up what the celtics gave up at all! and i would be praying that his two surgically-repaired ankles are ok.

cleveland is perhaps “behind the curve” on signing free agents but the part none of you seem to be getting is that the other teams are doing more than the cavs so they CAN CATCH THE CAVS!!! HELLO?? we’re at the top! we’re the hunted! we’re where every team in the east wants to be!! that’s why their making crazy moves left and right because they knew ( and know ) that once LBJ got a taste of the finals he was going to shut the door on the east for may a year. period. and if you don’t think that that’s true, well, you haven’t been paying attention…

and btw, lewis is soft and orlando will be killing itself down the road if it signs him to a max deal, as is being reported…

btw, maybe you basketball geniuses could point to all the brilliant and numerous free agent moves SA made last season to allow them to win the championship after not even making the finals the year previous. hmm?

  40. Tucker's Pink Taco Says:

No Name, how entirely right you are. Tucker is as moronic as they come. Like you said,

“And Allen, to say the Cavs suck just shows how naive you really are. The Cavs beat the Pistons, you are absent. After they get swept you come back and act like nothing happened. IMO, you lose all credibility. Can you possible say something positive about the Cavs without saying something negative.”

That’s exactly what I’m saying! Why the hell are people still even listening to this imbecile? It’s like a doctor telling someone they’re going to die only to leave the bedside as soon as they show signs of living. I can only pray that either 1) the Cavs win a championship or 2) LeBron does end up signing an extension. and I pray for this not as a cavs fan, but only because the Pistons series showed that as soon as Tucker is blatantly shown to be the idiot he is, he’ll pull a copperfield and disappear. If either of those two things above happens, I feel it won’t just be a temporary exile, but that Tucker will be gone for good to spout his nonsense elsewhere.

  41. Alan Tucker Says:

No Name, when in the hell did I say the Cavs “suck?” Your posts would make a helluva lot more sense if you wouldn’t make stuff up.

And big freakin’ deal. The Cavs beat the Pistons. So? Prior to that, they beat two WNBA teams. And after that, they were so outclassed, that many in the rest of the country now refer to them as the worst finals team ever. Almost makes me yearn for the Cuyahoga River setting itself on fire.

kj, what in the f*ck does Larry Hughes have to do with Grant Hill? If Hughes agrees to give back $14 million of what he made this year, then he’ll equal what Hill is going to get from the Suns. What in the world are you talking about? No, seriously, what kind of happy pills are you on?

  42. No Name Says:

    Allen,

I appologize, I misquoted you. You stated is sucks to be a Cavs fan. While I understand the difference, I took it to mean that the team sucks as well. I stand by what I said earlier, but I do appologize for misquoting you.

  43. Randy Says:

NoName-you should join Alan for some serious cheese grating of your nuts.

  44. Paul D Brown Says:

As long as Cleveland never obtains any “Knob-Jobbers” (Bob Huggins thugs or loyalist)I see nothing wrong with requesting a hand from bonofide talents.

  45. Orlando Vacation Says:

Be Neighbourly In Your Orlando Vacation Home…

People who choose to stay full time can have numerous reasons for doing so. They could be Disney employees thus enjoying the luxury of a very short journey time to work, since the majority of vacation rental villas are very well situated to access Walt…
