OK, folks I’m coming off the island vacation I am currently on for 15 minutes to give a brief update for tonight. I spoke with some Cavs officials yesterday and I am told they have about 15 guys they will be would be willing to draft if they can get in with cash and or taking back a player with their trade exception ($2.1 million). These guys would be available from picks 22-40, I am told. So when those picks arrive, start paying attention.
Another source has told me the one guy the Cavs covet in this draft might be Jared Dudley. He’s an undersized power forward from Boston College. In some ways, he’s a classic Danny Ferry pick, because he’s sort of undervalued. The last ACC Player of the Year to get this little run was Josh Howard, by the way. I’ve never seen him play, so I can’t really rate him. I understand he was impressed at the Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando.
I would say the chances of the Cavs getting into the draft at this point are about 50/50. It will depend on how the night develops, as usual.
I am also told the Cavs are not really close to any trades at this point. Earlier this week there was some buzz about the Cavs getting Beno Udith from the Spurs and perhaps their draft pick this year. I am told that is not happening right now.

I certainly hope the Cavs can get in this draft (DAMN YOU JIRI WELSCH!) guys like Nick Fazekas and Aaron Gray would certainly help our frontcourt should we get rid of Andy, and Aaron Affalo or Caleb Green would be nice pickups for the backcourt in case Sasha leaves. Just a thought…these guys will be available late first early second…
Thanks Brian! Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
Lose Andy and sign Fazekas? Charlie’s lost his mind.
Two responses:
First, “a classic Danny Ferry pick?” Talk about a sentence being high on the unintentional comedy scale.
Second, it’s good that the rumors involving Danny Ferry also involve dudes that suck so badly, the beat writer doesn’t even know his name. Brian, that sucky guy’s name is Beno Udrih. Not Udith. Udrih. Anyway, hope Ferry grabs him. It will be comforting to know Ferry’s keeping it classic, if not real. Besides, I just can’t get enough of the name “Beno.” Great name. Second only to “Mo.”
Looking at what Golden State did in the draft, lets start this rumor. Harrington/Jackson/Jasikevicius(he picked up his option) for Hughes/Pavlovic(sign & trade to even out $) I think both those players fit well into Nellie ball. Isn’t Stephen Jackson Mike Brown’s prodigal son? Jackson played his best basketball with Brown.
Spazmatic Alan Tucker, r is next to t on the keyboard. Look down and you’ll see what a mean. If Windhorst typed Udith, it was a typo. He knows who Beno Udrih is, and he does not suck. He just happens to play behind one of the best PGs in the NBA and Popovich probably doesn’t trust his defense at this point in his career. Cleveland would be a natural fit for Udrih, not only because of the Cavs needs and his playing style, but also because he’s Slovenian and Cleveland has more Slovenes than any city outside of Slovenia.
Let’s just call him “Beno.” He’s no Jaques Vaughn, but he’s soon to be ours. Once Ferry gets The Bean wrapped up longterm, maybe he can take another couple summers off.
Three summers on the job and one new young promising player who’s most often compared to BJ Armstrong to show for it.
No one even remembers how BJ Armstrong played. Horrible comparison.
This draft sucked. Totally predictable. The Cavs should go out and sign DaShaun Wood right now. Point guard who can penetrate, dish, and score. I don’t care if he isn’t “long” enough. Steve Nash, Tony Parker, Chris Paul, and Allen Iverson aren’t LONG!
I have to wonder if the Blazers would have taken Verajao or Gooden and Hughes in place of Steve Francis and Channing Frye. Zach Randolph is the low post scorer everyone fantasizes about when they’re pushing more touches for Big Z.
Kevin, it wasn’t a typo. Brian may indeed may have been drunk and running naked on the beach when he wrote it, but it wasn’t a typo. Even a lot of guys that know their basketball don’t know his name, because indeed, he sucks. The Cavs need don’t require another slow white guy to blaze down the floor to sizzle and burn high on the entertainment griddle. As if the Cavs aren’t deathly boring as it is.
Anyway, now that Atlanta was able to get a point guard, I get the feeling Ferry is going to make an effort to get Luke Ridnour. So Beano Cooke, or whatever his name is, may end up collecting dust on somebody else’s chair. I’d much rather see Mo Williams, but we’re talking about Danny Ferry here.
I’m long. Sign me.
I’d rather see Mo Williams too, but Udrih is not a slow white guy. When you’re talking about basketball, a slow white guy is, by default, a slow white American. European players don’t qualify–particularly if they’re not slow. If Beno Udrih sucks so much, why would the Spurs, with the best international scouting department in the league, draft him? And yes, it was a typo.
I can’t believe we’re arguing about typos. My money is that it wasn’t a typo. If you look at the letters on the keyboard, they ain’t even close.
But since we’re talking about dumb topics, I might as well bite the chum you just tossed in the water…by default, Europeans aren’t slow white guys? Dude, I haven’t seen a fast European white guy since the demise of the East German women’s swimming team. Where’s Ilgauskas from, the Congo? Good God, the man is blacker than night!
Why would the Spurs draft The Beanster? Because when you’re selecting 28th, you’ve got nothing to lose. When you suck so badly that you’ve actually lost your backup job to Jacque Vaughn, another guy that, coincidentally enough, also had been selected 28th, then the plain fact of the matter is that your talent level is hovering in a UFO somewhere in the Dan Dickau Triangle.
Nick indeed has made an excellent point, although he wasn’t nearly specific enough. What in the world is Jay Bilas’s problem? Every NBA draft, every year he’s been commentating about the NBA draft, everybody Bilas has raved about has been “long.” Thank goodness Ron Jeremy has never made himself eligible for the draft. Bilas’ head would explode.
I don’t know if Beno “sucks” or not, but does anyone believe he will be a major upgrade at point guard?
Beno’s stats this past year, his third season in the league, are no better than Gibson’s rookie stats. Are other teams interested in Beno? Why couldn’t he beat out Vaughn? If San Antonio’s coach doesn’t like his defense, will Mike Brown?
Why would a team that’s just seen its limitations revealed in the NBA Finals be wasting time chasing a player like Beno?
I tried Beano. Didn’t help.
BW, please put a link to the Ohio.com Cavs page on your blog page (like the other one had).
the bobcats just waived brevin knight, who would be a good fit as back-up PG for the cavs. sheesh, i’d never thought i’d be saying that but here we are…
excuse me for breaking up the “all beano all the time” thread…
and tucker, i knew you were dumb but really, R is “not even close” to T on a keyboard? really? jeebus…and showing your ignorance further you state “Europeans aren’t slow white guys? Dude, I haven’t seen a fast European white guy since the demise of the East German women’s swimming team.” well, sasha, being an “white eastern european,” is not slow. so there’s an example on the CAVS, much less the league, of a non-slow white eastern eurpoean.
seriously, are you even *trying* anymore??
I just gotta say – it’s high comedy watching all you guys bicker like a couple of drunk homeless people outside a bus station. alan tucker, who ARE you???
i can’t believe that no one has commented on joakim noah’s “look” last night. bowtie, hairdo, suit combo = straight cash pimpin.
happy 4th, everybody. I LOVE USA!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you BW. Much appreciated!
Alan Tucker, have you ever played on a basketball team? Personalities sometimes have much more to do with playing time or the lack thereof than does talent. If Popovich doesn’t get along with a player, the player won’t play. That’s what happened here. Amon Ones didn’t play for how long this season? It wasn’t all because he’s the worst defender in NBA history. And r is directly next to t on the keyboard. If it isn’t on your keyboard, you’ve probably got Cantonese characters on your keys, since Roman letter keyboards all have the same configuration.
I can’t believe you’re actually still here arguing that Beno is talented and Udith was a typo. You’re still 0 for 2, no matter how many times you’re going to keep swinging and swinging at the wiffleball.
Sheesh-by Euro I refer to any foreign player. You forgot to mention your thoughts on Mr. Bogut, he of #1 pick in the entire draft status. He was just a singular example, sorry you didn’t get it.
