DJ loves him some DJ

Posted November 21st, 2005 by bwindhorst

It is no surprise to me that Damon Jones and Terrell Owens are boys and proud supporters of each other no matter what.   As Damon said the other night in Philly to a reporter: TO just wants the ball.

When athletes hang out, usually they play video games, go to clubs, compare personal chefs and, in the case of the Minnesota Vikings, pass loose women around a chartered boat.  When DJ and TO get together, they might just sit around and look at themselves in handheld mirrors.

ToConsidering the pressure they compete under, it is understandable why having a massive ego is sometimes vital in sports.  Damon doesn’t just say he’s the best shooter in the world, he actually believes it (he also believes he’s the best looking guy on the Cavs and probably the NBA).  No doubt that is comforting when you’ve got to make a jumper in front of 20,000 people or make clutch free throws like he did the other night in Philly.

After three weeks of not talking to the media, DJ finally spoke up today.  He made it pretty clear that even though the Cavs are playing well, he’s playing well, and everyone thinks the idea of bringing him and Donyell Marshall off the bench together is smashing, he’s still not happy.  Nor will he happy until he’s the starter.  The conversation between him and the media went like this:

Branson Wright, Plain Dealer: Did it have anything to do with Eric Snow being the starter, not speaking to us?
DJ: Next question.
Branson: Are you comfortable with your role coming off the bench?
DJ: Next question
Yours truly: Can you not be fully happy unless you’re the starter, is that what we’re getting out of this?
DJ: Next question.

Draw your own conclusions from that.

This, mind you, less than 48 hours after the biggest Cavs win of the season to get the team to 8-2.  Damon did say Mike Brown has handled the team well and Brown said he had no problems with Damon…YET!

Boozer_lakers_1In other news, Carlos Boozer isn’t just sitting around waiting for his hamstring to heal.  He’s buying a $6.8 million house in LA. Today is his 24th birthday…Happy Birthday, Carlos!

I’ve gotten e-mails asking me what other stuff I read regularly on the net.  Well, today I have decided to tell you.

I don’t even understand the Damon Jones thing…Specifically, the point guard thing. The plain fact of the matter is that DWAYNE WADE was the Heat point guard. Jones, for all intents and purposes, was the SHOOTING guard. Why was he being advertised in the Cleveland/Akron media as the Heat’s point guard?

Wade isn’t a pure point guard, and neither is Jones. Jones has been doing that Chucky Brown/Jim Jackson lonely nomad thing for a very good reason. Jones has a nice outside shot, but not much else. Very limited talent. Granted, Eric Snow does not have the point guard skills of a Kidd or a Stockton (and I’m including Kid Rock and Dick Stockton in this analogy…face it, Snow really just ain’t all that good), but Jones hit that undeserved golden jackpot just like the travelin’ Ira Newble did. Ah, to be a professional athlete in a major sport with guaranteed contracts. Must be nice. Jones should just tuck in his shirt (and his ego), and do his job. And that’s make those outside shots. The more accurate you are, the more minutes you’ll get. Stop being a freakin’ baby that’s played on a third of the franchises in the NBA. You admirably stuck it out, and the Cavs contract is your just reward. Go buy a Porsche and quit being a flaming girlyman.

    Brian,

    Love the blog.

I’m worried s— will hit the fan once the Cavaliers lose a few in a row and Eric Snow is still starting. We need a biopsy because Damon Jones might be a clubhouse cancer.

something tells me that loozer won’t have the balls to show his face at the gund/q/whatever *again* on 12/20

Give Jones what he wants. Ferry should put his Duke brain in motion to try to find some way to pedal Snow and Gooden to the Knicks for Antonio Davis. Those two guys are clearly the two biggest weaknesses in the Cavs starting lineup. Aside from Claymation Station Z. It’s the last year of Davis’ big contract. So clear out cap space for next season, and the Cavs wouldn’t lose any level of talent for this season.

Damon Jones is no big deal. All this sound and fury signifying nothing. His ego wont be a problem he is just a character having fun with the media and as usual they are falling for it hook, line and sinker. He has never been a problem in any locker room he’s been in and doubt he will start to be one after 8 or so years in the league.

Gooden and Snow for Antonio Davis? Wow, how idiotic is that. Someone needs to step away from the realgm.com trade checker and turn off the computer.

Hoopshype.com is just a site that compiles media links. You can find the same links at insidehoops.com and to a lesser extent prosportsdaily.com

How idiotic is that??? Take a whiff of some smelling salts, Pal. Then get some sleep.

This is from my own marshmallow brain, and I don’t even know what goofy site you’re talking about. Snow adds nothing substantive other than a bloated contract for many years to come. Jones is a potential troublemaker that can fill many of Snow’s minutes, and Gooden is a guy now in the last year of his contract. Gooden is every bit as dependable as a condom made of Silly Putty. The Cavs will not give him big dollars. Ferry was a lousy player, but I’m really starting to like his management smarts. The Cavs presently have other guys that can easily fill Snow’s and Gooden’s spots, and Davis is a very decent and very tough player who has a giant contract that’s ending. It’s been months since I read it, but if memory serves, he’s making something like 13 million dollars this year. Furthermore, Davis can play both two positions, both power forward and center.

But the point isn’t acquiring a guy like Davis. The point is if Ferry can hypnotize a good player like Larry Hughes to sign a free agent contract to play in a comparative hellhole like Cleveland, then he can certainly hypnotize somebody else, too. The plain fact of the matter is without any cap space nor first round picks for the future, there is no other way to really improve during the remainder of James’ current contract. And isn’t that what this is all about? Making James happy by making him a winner? Otherwise, you end up with a team like the Timberwolves. Basically, keep shuffling the other parts without a real upside. The team is pretty much stuck with what it has now. So they can’t subsequently go out and sign guys like Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel. But clear out cap space for the immediate future. Then, you can.

Of course, if you have some sort of genius alternative as to how they can really improve beyond this year, I’d be willing to read it.

I notice that Boozer’s new house in L.A. has an elevator. I admit I’m every bit as lazy as the next guy, but just how bad of a boo-boo do I need to have on my foot and on my hamstring in order to get my insurance to pay for a home elevator? I’m willing to intentionally fall down the steps if that’s what it takes. Chicks dig home elevators.
