Offloading some musings

Posted November 18th, 2005 by bwindhorst

It is late, but here’s what’s on the brain from Brian after Orlando game:

  • I don’t want to say Z was in the zone tonight or anything, but dude threw three no-look passes, setting a career-high in that catagory, and all of them actually were caught.
  • Mike Brown has learned quickly, no matter who’s fault a defensive breakdown is, he almost always yells at Drew Gooden.  Or at least that what it seems like.
  • They never play Usher’s Yeah song anymore at Q, wonder why?  Last season they belted it out like six times a night and would always used canned footage of the few games Usher came too.
  • After the game, Pistons-Rockets game is on huge TVs in Cavs locker room.  Yao Ming dunks on Ben Wallace.  Quoth LeBron: "Yeah, Yao, dunk on his (backside), somebody beat them, we’re trying to catch them."
  • Damon Jones, who still isn’t talking to the media, practices his preposterous high leg kick during warm-ups.
  • Mike Wilks can throw down some of the nastiest dunks on the team.  He can get up.
  • Steve Francis has to lead the league in complaining to the officials.  Tonight, however, I thought he was right at least twice.
  • I think Dwight Howard can jump higher than LeBron, the only guy in the league I thought could do that was Josh Smith.  He’s going to be crazy good.
  • Speaking of Dwight Howard, it looked to me like he twice fouled LeBron hard on purpose within a few minutes of each other in the third quarter.  One wonders if it was a message from Aaron Goodwin, Howard’s agent who LeBron fired last spring.
  • I’ve been on a huge Warren Zevon kick lately.  He has some of the best lyrics of all time.  "I’m hiding in Honduras, I’m a desperate man; send lawyers, guns and money, the s— has hit the fan!"  That and The Killers, especially Smile Like You Mean It.
  • I find covering a team on a winning streak is sometimes no fun, there is no controversy to write about.
  • I will be interested to see if Damon Jones or Eric Snow can keep Allen Iverson in front of them in Philly tomorrow (or, actually, tonight, since it is nearly 2 a.m.).  Let’s just say their tactics didn’t work in the two preseason games with the Sixers.  He averaged 33 points in those two games.
  • I find it mildly comical to refer to Hedo Turkoglu as Hedo Turkey-glue.
  • I respect that Sasha Pavlovic is keeping his head up after getting benched, but Luke Jackson looks better by the game.

OK, I have to sleep and get ready to go to Philly.  Sorry to disturb the chat room passing as my comment section.  By the way, my latest podcast is here.

Peace.

OUCH. A nasty bite from the man who used to run amok in Kent. Man, that hurt. I was merely going to ask Brian for more information about this Damon Jones goose-step I’ve never seen (but would like to). And then I was going to ask about Brian’s form-fitting shirts and slacks he wears on the Cavs beat. The late great Warren’s words were clearly a foreshadowing prophesy:

“He’s the hairy, hairy gent, who ran amok in Kent. Lately he’s been overheard in Mayfair. You better stay away from him, he’ll rip your lungs out Jim. Huh, I’d like to meet his tailor.”

  2. Phi Says:

Brian, your blog sucks. I will just read the sports page. You offer nothing that I can’t read in the paper. I’m done. Parting shot…To:Alan Tucker…What in the hell are you talking about? no need to respond. (Terry Pluto 4ever)

    Phi: Thanks for stopping by.

Alan: “A saw a werewolf drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic’s…his hair was perfect.”

Ok, Ok, please procede. All clean comments are welcome, even from Phi.

I loved that the game was on ESPN High Def last night, it is one of the best HD channels out there, but the damn announcers were so dry it made Reghi look good. I don’t understand why they can’t find better announcers. There has to be a ton of people that want that job that are GOOD at it.

What is up with LBJ? He seems off his game lately. He needs to start passing more and that will open things up so he can attack the basket.

I used to have that Werewolves of London LP. My Dad loved that song.

  6. Heath Says:

Bob - The Cavaliers are off to their best start since 1976-1977. If it means LeBron’s off for a couple of games, this means the TEAM is really doing it together. I am guessing that James will be on his game for most of the year. Also, Jim Durham is a well-respected PBP man, but Steve “Snapper” Jones with out Bill Walton is kinda like Hall without Oates. I agree with the “dry” assesment from last night.

Alan, you’ve got to stay off the sauce before typing on Brian’s blog. :D

Hey, Phi..who are you? Pat McManamon???

  7. YAY Says:

Bron is shooting 52%. I’ll take that. The ball isn’t in his hands as much. Stats aren’t everything, although I will agree at times he looks a little unsure out there this year. The whole offense does though.

Why isn’t anyone bitching about Dan Gilbert anymore?

  8. Alan Tucker Says:

Heath, if you knew anything about Warren Zevon’s stuff, you’d know I’m not on any sauce. Just making a reference about a hairy, hairy gent who ran amok in Kent. Go look at Brian’s diploma. Then go look at a werewolf. Then put the two together. Voila.

And damn, Bob. You sure know how to make an old man feel completely ancient. Excuse me while I go take a pill to shrink my cantaloupe-sized prostate. Your DAD loved that record??? Usher and the Cavs pole-sliding cheerleaders forever, Dude.

  9. Alan Tucker Says:

Oh, one more thing, Heath. Inaccurate analogy…I’ve always liked Steve Jones’ color commentary on nationally televised games, going back to when he worked on the NBA games on USA. But Hall without Oates? Come on, get real. I agree that Jones and Walton work well together, but it ain’t Hall without Oates. Not even close. It’s more like Larry without Moe.

Oh, and I am sorry about what can be considered as “chatroom” material, Brian. But if there is good reason to bring the Three Stooges into an enlightening cerebral discussion, then damnit, I’m going for it.

  10. bob Says:

hey brian, you’re forgetting luke jackson. white boy has hops. or so he said, with his higher vert than josh smith

  11. Mike in Seattle Says:

Read the paper, Phi? What paper? the PD? Doesnt Conley “cover” the cavs for that rag? Hint: conley steals his stuff from windhorst. also, did anyone see conleys rant a couple months ago on the pd cavs blog that he was ordered to take down? classic.

thanks for the coverage brian, unlike PHI i don’t have time to waste by reading a paper. this is my main source of Cavaliers info.

  12. Bob S Says:

That Luke Jackson comment was not from the regular Bob. Which of course is me, and this white boy has some mad hops. Sorry for making you feel old, Alan. If it makes you feel better I am about three months older than Mr. Windhorst.

  13. Kevin L Says:

Keep this stuff coming! Questions for your next blog:

    1. Is Drew getting it more than he did last year or does he just not hang his head as much. Seems like Mike Brown pulls him aside as he heads to the bench each time out. Is that when he is getting talked to? Doesn’t seem as worked up as last year.

    2. How can you say Luke is looking better? Sure he hit a couple 3s and didn’t get toasted on D, but 2 of 8 vs O and DNP vs Philly? That doesn’t seem like a breakout performace. To me, it seems that the ball just flies out of his hand spontaneously anytime he goes to the paint. Sasha did have a sweet spin and attempted dunk vs. O and Luke didn’t manage much at all even in scrub time.

Just trying to keep the blog goin’

    Thanks,

    K

  14. Brian W. Says:

    K,

Drew still screws up on defense, but he is playing more under control right now.

Luke is getting better by the game at both ends, trust me. He didn’t play in Philly because Larry and LBJ were on the floor 100 percent of the time. Had nothing to do with the way he played before.

  15. ms Says:

How could you have attended the Orlando game and thought that Luke played well? He can hit the wide open three and isn’t embarassing on defense, that’s about all I can see.

  16. T-Bone Says:

How about those lyrics to ‘Excitable Boy’. Zevon was an amazing songwriter.
