They may have divided the carries at Clemson, but Browns running back James Davis was so close with C.J. Spiller that he couldn't stand losing his roommate during his senior year in 2008.

Senior football players at Clemson are allowed to have private rooms, but Davis said that lasted only one game before he asked to be reunited with Spiller.

"My senior year, I'd been having good years all the way up, I didn't want to change anything," Davis said Thursday after a sweltering practice during Browns organized team activities. "I wanted to keep rooming with C.J. He gets me up in the morning. I didn't want to miss a meeting or anything like that.

"He'd get up and play the music, that gets me up. If I have nobody in there, I can't really hear my alarm clock."

Davis didn't say who took over that role last season with the Browns. But it seems like the two will remain close friends, even after Spiller was drafted ninth overall by the Buffalo Bills in April.

"He's a great guy, a great church guy. He'd come pick me up every Sunday," Davis said of Spiller. "He's got a door key to my house. He'd say, 'Get up, man, we've got to go.' He's probably one of the best persons I ever met in my life."

Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown, who had served as the Browns' executive advisor since the 2005 season, has relinquished his official title.

Spokesman Neal Gulkis said Brown will continue to be around the team and that he recently spoke to the Browns' rookie class.

Brown, 74, has been one of owner Randy Lerner's most trusted advisors. Brown also developed a close relationship with several players, including former running back Jamal Lewis.

Hall of Fame receiver Paul Warfield's role is also reportedly being evaluated. Warfield has been a special assignment scout and special assistant to the general manager since 2004.

Both Brown and Warfield are still listed on the Browns' organizational list on the team's web site.

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, signed March 14 as a free agent from New Orleans, said he's known defensive coordinator Rob Ryan since he was coming out of the University of California in the 2002 draft.

"My only visit coming out for the draft was New England he was the linebacker coach there. I thought they were going to draft me," said Fujita, who was selected in the fifth round by Kansas City. "I wasn't recruited coming out of high school, I had no recruiting visits for colleges. So when I went there, I remember Rob took me out to lunch and bought me a hamburger. I thought that was the coolest thing.

"It was a little dive bar, but it was a hamburger he bought for me."

An eight-year veteran, Fujita isn't sure if he'll play inside or outside in the Browns' 3-4 scheme.

"It remains to be seen," he said. "We have a lot of linebackers who can play a lot of different positions and I think that's one of our strengths. A lot of us have a lot of versatility and that's going to be one of the big strengths of this defense."

After spending the past four seasons in New Orleans and winning the Super Bowl last season, Fujita said Cleveland will be a big change for himself, his wife Jaclyn and their twin daughters.

"It's a huge change, but a change that my family is embracing," he said. "We love to explore new areas of the country and for us, that's a part of it. It's not just playing football on Sundays, it's getting to know the country well. We know that there is a great fan base here, we've always heard a lot about it, so we are excited about that."

Browns coach Eric Mangini didn't seem overly upset over kicker Phil Dawson's decision to skip this week's off-season training activities.

Dawson, who has been seeking a raise from his $1 million salary in 2009-10, did not participate last year, either.

Asked if Shaun Suisham, the former Redskins and Cowboys kicker signed on Monday, would get a chance to compete for the job, Mangini said, "We have to get to 80 by time traininng camp starts. As each restricted guy or rookie signs, we have to release somebody. How the final configuration of the 80 turns out, I'm not sure. We have Reggie Hodges, who also punted for us last year. Whether we'll keep all four … it's nice for each one we do have has the opportunity to punt and kick during this block of time."

Punter Dave Zastudil is rehabbing from knee surgery and is not participating in drills.

Dawson has been with the Browns since 1999 and excelled in tough conditions in Cleveland and during road games in Buffalo.

"Phil does a really good job in tough environments to kick," Mangini said. "It's so unpredictable week in and week out, dramatic shifts in temperature, precipitation. He's done a nice job over the course of his career."

Perhaps fearing that Phil Dawson's absence from organized training activities could become a prolonged holdout, the Browns signed kicker Shaun Suisham and waived kicker Leigh Tiffin.

Suisham has appeared in 57 games since joining the league as an undrafted free agent with Pittsburgh in April, 2005. He's made 87 of 110 field goal attempts and all but two of 103 extra points. Suisham played in eight games in two stints with Dallas from (2005-06, 2009) and in 49 games with Washington (2006-09).

The Bowling Green product's best season came last year, when Suisham hit 20 of 24 field goals and 25 of 26 PATs in 14 games with Dallas and Washington.

At Bowling Green from 2001-04, Suisham became the school's all-time leading scorer (361 points) and set a team record with 45 career field goals. As a senior, the native of Wallaceburg, Ontario was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award.

On Monday night at the Akron Browns Backers Banquet, Browns general manager Tom Heckert revealed Dawson's absence from OTAs, but gave no details.

Dawson has been seeking a new contract for some time. He may also be upset over the Browns having no backup kicker in training camp, which may have contributed to a calf injury that cost him five games in '09.

According to the NFL Players Association web site, Dawson's salary for this season is $1 million, the same as 2009.

Asked if it was a contract issue, Heckert said, "I don't want to get into that, but that's not the whole thing with him." Asked if his Dawson's absence was related to the circumstances surrounding his injury, Heckert said, "I don't know the exact answer to that. You have to ask him."

Canadian doctor Anthony Galea, charged Tuesday in U.S. Federal Court with smuggling and drug-related offenses, made three trips to Cleveland last year, according to an investigative report on ESPN.com.

A story by ESPN's Mike Fish said Galea's former executive assistant Mary Anne Catalano told authorities that the doctor made three trips to Cleveland between Aug. 27 and Sept. 11 to treat 11 professional athletes. She said two received HGH therapy, while most of the others received an IV drip of vitamins and Actovegin, a drug extracted from calf's blood that is illegal in the United States.

Galea's most frequent destination among eight major U.S. cities was Cleveland, where he cared for 11 of 23 athletes named by Catalano, ESPN.com said.

No athletes were named in documents filed in federal court in Buffalo that charged Galea with smuggling, lying to federal officials, unlawful distribution of HGH, introducing Actovegin into interstate commerce and conspiracy to defraud the United States, ESPN said. But three unidentified NFL players were listed in the documents, the story said.

A patient in Cleveland, identified as "Athlete L," had four HGH treatments between Aug. 13 and Sept. 11, which also included at least one injection in his knee, ESPN said.

Galea has treated golfer Tiger Woods, but Woods said earlier this year that was for platelet therapy after his knee surgery following the 2008 U.S. Open.

The story describes Galea as the "go-to doctor for injured elite athletes." His activities in a U.S.-Canadian smuggling operation were exposed after Catalano was stopped at a Buffalo border crossing Sept. 14 with a bag containing medical supplies and growth hormone. Catalano told authorities she and Galea met athletes in "hotel rooms and their homes," with the athletes also paying their travel expenses, ESPN said.

Among the other cities named in ESPN's report are New York (three athletes), Boston, Tampa, Fla., and Washington (two each), Orlando, Fla., San Diego and San Francisco.

Punter Dave Zastudil (leg) and linebacker Eric Barton (neck) reported to the start of Browns' off-season training activities but were not allowed to participate in drills, according to general manager Tom Heckert.

Also participating was nose tackle Shaun Rogers, arrested April 1 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on gun charges.

But the Browns' five unsigned restricted free agents — linebacker Matt Roth, fullback Lawrence Vickers, running back Jerome Harrison, safety Abe Elam and linebacker D'Qwell Jackson — were not in attendance. Also missing was kicker Phil Dawson.

Dawson has been seeking a new contract for over a year. He was the only kicker in training camp last summer, which likely contributed to a calf injury that caused him to miss five games in 2009.

Asked about Dawson's absence, Heckert said, "It's not mandatory."
