Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs underwent an MRI Tuesday for what was announced as a sprained knee, taken out by a low blow from Browns' quarterback Brady Quinn during Baltimore's 16-0 Monday night victory at Cleveland.
Drawing a personal foul penalty, Quinn hit Suggs as Quinn was trying to tackle cornerback Chris Carr, who recorded the second of two third-quarter interceptions thrown by Quinn.
"What happened last night was a gross injustice," Suggs' agent Gary Wichard said. "Brady was trying to make a tackle and Terrell didn't even have the football. Brady's a pretty strong guy, take him on high like you're supposed to. If you want to make the tackle, make the tackle. Don't take his knees out and potentially end a career or season."
Wichard said he hopes Quinn is slapped with the same fine that has been levied against other clients who get paid to sack quarterbacks, like Jason Taylor, Dwight Freeney and Elvis Dumervil.
"My guys are getting fines, warnings to protect the quarterback and they're getting blocked into the quarterback, knocked by 320-pound guys into the quarterback," Wichard said. "When the role is reversed, things should be done from an equal standpoint.
"If I'm a quarterback, I'd be smart enough not to wake a sleeping giant. You've still got to drop back and face these guys and they're real (ticked)."
Quinn tried to apologize to Suggs on the field and again after the game. Quinn said he knew Suggs from time training together in Arizona.
"I was trying to go for the ballcarrier, trying to make the tackle on Carr," Quinn said. "(Suggs) came across the last second in my vision. I was upset about it on the field. I'll be praying for him. I couldn't have been more sorry about that, that was never the intent. I'm sorry to Terrell and the rest of their team."
Speaking in a conference call Tuesday, Browns coach Eric Mangini compared Quinn's hit to the one Browns receiver/returner Joshua Cribbs suffered Monday on the game's final hook-and-lateral play.
"It looked like Terrell was coming to block him and Brady was trying to make the tackle and he tried to cut through," Mangini said. "I don't think Brady had any intention of hurting someone. It's not anything we teach or we believe in or anything I've ever known Brady to believe in. I take Brady at his word."
Wichard said his cell phone was "ringing off the hook" when his clients saw Suggs limping off the field. Wichard guessed Quinn was "(ticked) off" because he'd thrown another interception.
"It's a tight fraternity," Wichard said. "That's why Ray Lewis did what he did. If you want to do what the big boys are doing, do it clean. If you don't want to do it, get out of the way. Don't dive at somebody's knee, that's not heroic at all.
"I'm sure Brady hated to see (New England quarterback) Tom Brady taken off the field a year ago. Brady launched into (Suggs) based on what he wanted to do."
If anyone watches the play, Quinn was clearly going to make the tackle and Suggs came in at last second and braced himself for the contact. You can tell when a player has intent. These defensive guys are whining because of the sometimes petty calls on them for QB hits. WHat is this now, these players play a violent game. This type of play happens all the time and its accidental too. You can tell the difference with intent and Quinn didn't have that look about it in that play. And agents………just keep collecting off the players and stay in the closet. No one cares to hear what you have to say.
Quinn tackled with a mission. It was no accident. He will be fined, and should be fined, as all of the defensive players have been getting fined for "touching" the quarterbacks. They're not allowed to use that power to take out other players. Inexperienced, dumb move. He's going to have some defensive players looking for him…..
He didn't take out the guys knees on purpose! He was going for a tackle, saw Suggs coming his way and tried to get his pad level lower than Suggs. Smaller guys need to get lower than bigger guys because if they don't they get plastered! R. Royal caught a pass out in the right flat and before he could get completely turned around, E. Reed was up on him hitting him at the knees. Reed was in a full sprint. Royal was defenseless at the time. This is another example of a smaller guy getting low. Royal just didn't get hurt. Reed was not flagged. If Royal would have been injured nothing would have been done or said to Reed because there was no intent to hurt Royal.
You guys are wacked. Quinn wasn't about to make a tackle, he was no where near the ball carrier. Suggs just witnessed the INT, had his back to Quinn, and was just starting to turn around; he was completely unaware of Quinn. Quinn wasn't going after Carr, he was clearly going right at Sugg's knees. It was a cheap shot and uncalled for. He should get a very stiff fine for his intent.
Friggenwacko,
Your comments fit your name perfectly. Watch the replay. The hit was not below the knees, but just above in the thighs. And you tell me what you would do if you were in Quinn's place. A 210 lb guy with a 300+ DL coming at you. Yeah sure, Quinn should have let the guy flatten him. It was not INTENTIONAL, so quit crying. Nobody is mentioning the stupid flag on the Browns when Flaco got bumped by two Browns.
And a forearm to the head on Cripps was a good play ?????? At the end of a game that was already a Win for the Ravens. Go cry to the Steelers. You are what your name says along with all the other whiners…….
Pingback: Suggs’ Agent, Clients Ticked At Quinn « Hollywood Celebs
Quinn is a quarterback not a linebacker. I have to laugh at two things. The first one is the agent,Wichard, who said that his cell phone was ringing off the hook from his other clients. That's so much BS-do you think his clients have nothing better to do than complain about one of his boys getting hit supposedly at the knees by a quarterback? He thinks pretty highly of himself doesn't he? The other one is Ray Lewis, Mr. clean himself. He shouldn't even be playing football let alone complaining about someone else getting hit. What a joke he is! He should be behind bars.
Do you really think that Wichard, the agent, gives a rats whatever about Suggs? He's more worried about a career ending injury or a little less about the season ending injury since the season is half over. All those "moneygrubbing high-priced lawyers" care about is their money. They have ruined football and most other sports. It's even funnier when they try to talk like they know something about football. "What happened was a gross injustice." "Suggs didn't even have the football." That's pretty easy to say when you're sitting in the stands, when you're down on the field and things are moving so fast that you don't even know who has the ball half the time and you see someone out of the corner of your eye that's a lot bigger than you are you better hit him low. You don't stick your forearm in someone's neck when they aren't even in the play though. I just hope Cribbs is all right. He's the best!
