Quinn to start vs. Packers

Brady Quinn will start Saturday night's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, the Browns just announced.

It was not known if coach Eric Mangini based his choice on recent practices, a body of work during training camp and the off-season or the flip of a coin (just kidding!).

It does mean that Mangini will throw Derek Anderson to the wolves, er, Dawgs, when the Browns host the Detroit Lions next Saturday in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

When he was last seen there in a non-scrimmage situation, Anderson was upset when some fans cheered after he suffered a knee injury Nov. 30 against the Indianapolis Colts, ending his season. Quinn has been a fan favorite since he was drafted with the 22nd overall pick in 2007.

Ironically, the television monitor in the Lambeau Field press box had Derek Anderson listed as the starter.

Quinn got at least a few snaps against his brother-in-law A.J. Hawk, a starting inside linebacker from Ohio State.

Also of note, the Browns were again wearing their brown pants, which were last sported during the '08 preseason against the New York Giants. In that contest, the starters fell behind 30-0 on the road before the Browns fell 37-34 to the defending Super Bowl champions.

Inactive for the Browns were offensive lineman Rex Hadnot (knee), receiver David Patten and tight ends Steve Heiden and John Madsen.
Heiden tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee on Dec. 15 and underwent surgery four days later. Patten hasn't practiced since last Sunday's scrimmage.

Among the inactives for the Packers was rookie linebacker Clay Matthews III, son of the long-time Browns linebacker, and rookie nose tackle B.J. Raji, the ninth overall pick who signed late Thursday.

One Response to Quinn to start vs. Packers

  1. Marc says:

Marla, your totally biased slant toward favoring D.A. at QB is mystifying. Do you base it on D.A.'s choke job in 2007, or the season-long debacle last year? Can you give us one—JUST ONE—reason why the Browns would want to sit Brady Quinn with a clipboard for a 3rd straight season without seeing what he can bring to the offense?

Isn't it time for this unsettled QB debate to end, so we can move forward with this team? If D.A. was a future hall of famer, don't you think he would've distinguished himself FAR beyond Brady at this point? It hasn't happened.

Bottom line, every time Quinn gets in the game, he moves the team downfield. Finishing things off in the red zone must be a team-wide effort, from the coaches on down. D.A. is an erratic turnover machine.

It's time for some real objectivity here. The team's best QB had 10 points on the board (and taken away) last night in his two drives.

The other two backups-at-best QBs combined for 3 INTs and zero points. Case closed.
