A confirmation of sorts

By Marla Ridenour

While he didn't use the word staph, Browns general manager Phil Savage confirmed Thursday's report on Cleveland.com that wide receiver Joe Jurevicius contracted an infection after having arthroscopic surgery on his knee in January.

"At some point following that procedure, he acquired an infection from which he is recovering," Savage said in a statement released Friday. "He has been rehabilitating here in Cleveland and is expected to take part in the team's off-season activities."

The team will hold organized activities in May and a minicamp in June.

Savage may be thankful the story didn't come to light during free agency. The staph infection center LeCharles Bentley contracted after tearing his left patellar tendon in training camp of 2006 has jeopardized his career. To no one's surprise, Bentley continues to train in Phoenix as he attempts a comeback this summer. Receiver Braylon Edwards, tight end Kellen Winslow, safety Brian Russell and linebacker Ben Taylor have also had bouts of staph since June, 2005.

The Browns have had their facility inspected and treated since the first breakout and Jurevicius may not have picked up the infection in Berea.

Can someone please get a bottle of Pine Sol up to the Cleveland Clinic, stat?

Seriously, or build a new facility from scratch. This is ridiculous.

Borowski was MRI'd this morning at Cleveland Clinic. What say we take some over-under action on # of days until he gets staph. (And I know MRI is not surgery).

Sheesh. Are all these procedures done in the Modell Wing or what?

I read elsewhere that the folks who inspected and treated the Browns' facility came from (you guessed it) the Cleveland Clinic.

As to Marla's comment that "Savage may be thankful the story didn't come to light during free agency," I keep asking myself why it would have mattered. It wouldn't have affected the Stallworth signing since Joe wanted to move to the #3 spot anyways. I suppose there could be some players for whom it could have affected their decisions to consider the Browns, but I'm not convinced it would have carried that much weight.

Then again, I've never been in the position to consider an offer from an NFL team, so what do I know? Still, it wuld have been nice to have that statement explained. It's not as if she had to keep the story short because she was running out of internet paper.

Maybe Savage is worried that this staff pandemic is going to start scaring free agents away.

It sounds as if this staph may be MERSA and very difficult to kill, as it is resistant to all but two anti-biotics. Anyone know exactly what it is?
