Fourth quarter thoughts vs. the Bengals
Posted September 16th, 2007 by Pat McManamon
SCORE
First down — Before the play, I say I agree with the Browns decision to go for it on fourth-and-inches with more than 14 minutes left. Gotta keep scoring to win this game, and punting the ball does not let you score.
Second down — The Browns don't make it. Guess they should have punted.
Third down — Well it's safe to say that Derek Anderson has justified the faith the Browns front office and coaching staff showed in him. Ditto for Jamal Lewis.
Fourth down — Apparently both teams agreed before the game that rushing the passer and tackling would be illegal in this game.
Fifth down — Braylon Edwards lays out for a touchdown pass. Anderson now has five. This is the team that was described to the world during preseason. Gigantic credit to them for hanging tough after a dismal opening week.
Sixth down — Carson Palmer is pretty unbelievable. And where does Glenn Holt come from? With 3:39 left, the Bengals cut it to six. Now is when good teams win games by running the ball and the clock. Can the Browns do it?
Seventh down (we've completely lost the concept on this down thing, by the way) — You would hate, hate, hate to give Carson Palmer one more chance to win this game when you're ahead by six.
Eighth down — Leigh Bodden's interception ends the game. What a game. What a win. What an effort by the Browns, who rebounded from an amazingly tough opener. Credit to them all.

It's too bad all the Browns naysayers were watching Charlie pace the sideline for the Seahawks this week. They missed a pretty entertaining game.

Chaz! Where are you? Oh yeah, on the inactive list.

Thank you Browns ! If only for a week. Good to see the offense play well. But where is the defense? Oh well. I guess we won….that'a what counts. I watched the game but am still in doubt it really happened. The only regular game I liked better was the 51-0 licking the Brownie put on the Steelers in the late 90's.

Great game! Just wondering though, why didn't Browns take a delay of game ( even 2 delays) before punting with 1:13 left. We might have been down to :35 till end of game

Yep. One game proves it. So everything's fixed?
I think what we do know is this:
1. After 2 games, still no scoring defense.
2. After 2 games, no idea which offense will show up for the next game.
3. The difference on offense isn't Charlie. He played about one of the eight quarters you've seen.
4. The Browns' season is 16 games, no less, no more.
5. Maybe Romeo is cured of that nonsense about flipping coins.
That's all we know. Come to think of it, I'm not so sure of #5.

Be happy Bear…gosh, they just did what every fan has been wanting to see since '99.
no scoring defense?? go build a ant farm….
who knows who will show up next week, but it was a good game

Thanks, Matt, but defense will count when you want to think about the playoffs. THAT'S what every Browns fan wants to see. 40+ points allowed per game might be fun to watch in a schoolyard, but it means Not For Long in the NFL. Even Derek's 5 TD throws were eclipsed by Carson's 6.
So I flipped a coin. (What else?) I'll be watching the Seahawks for a while, if only to see Charlie pick up a playoff bonus check for pacing the sidelines and learning.
Good luck, anyway.

Definitely need to fix the defense as the season goes along, but it was a great game nonetheless. Love seeing highlights of the "playmakers" finally making big plays. Sorry Bear, but a lot of credit should be given to the quarterback. Frye can only dream of having a game like this. But he will spend this season learning how to run the scout team each week. Don't be so quick to punch Seattle's playoff ticket either.
Go Browns
