Foley's Message Parlor
Posted October 4th, 2006 by Chip Bok
Florida Republican Mark Foley took big chances sending raunchy e-mails and lewd text messages to congressional pages. Maybe he thought he would be protected. Or maybe we was committing political suicide. He resigned his seat.
On the other hand, he's still following congressional procedure. He has checked into rehab, giving alcoholism a bad name.
The question now is what did House Speaker Hastert know about Foley's messages and when did he know it.
The Washington Times thinks Hastert is Foley's keeper and he should step down too. The Wall Street Journal asks why go after Hastert when Democrat Gerry Studds actually seduced a page 23 years ago and was allowed to remain a member of congress for 13 years after being censured?

oh yeah, you right-winger! it's the darned MSM again! i mean after all, ABC just ran a tv movie filled with lies and inaccuracies about clinton, so they CLEARLY are the tool of the left! jesus…it couldn't be that MATT DRUDGE might be wrong or doing the bidding of his right-wing masters, could it? drudge is the sicko who said this "And if anything, these kids are less innocent — these 16 and 17 year-old beasts…and I've seen what they're doing on YouTube and I've seen what they're doing all over the internet — oh yeah — you just have to tune into any part of their pop culture. You're not going to tell me these are innocent babies. Have you read the transcripts that ABC posted going into the weekend of these instant messages, back and forth? The kids are egging the Congressman on! The kids are trying to get this out of him. We haven't got the whole story on this."
oh yeah, that's REAL nice stuff from drudge. blame the victim.
answer me this, burns, is there ANYTHING, any act that you right-winger's won't defend your party on? cuz i see people making excuses and blaming the victim on this foley mess and it's ALL coming from the right-wing. have you people no shame? isn't there ANYTHING that will make you say "gee, that guy's a republican but i have to say he crossed the line." is there? at what point do politics FINALLY take a back seat to common decency?

"i mean after all, ABC just ran a tv movie filled with lies and inaccuracies about clinton, so they CLEARLY are the tool of the left"
I guess you just confirmed that ABC continues to put out incorrect information.

"cuz i see people making excuses and blaming the victim on this foley mess"
I've read the Drudge post over and over and fail to see where the victim is being blamed

burns,
you right-wingers astound me. re-read my post and re-read the quote where drudge refers to them as 'beasts' and that they're not 'innocent babies.' yeah, you're right that's CLEARLY not blaming the victim…
oh, and here is what the lawyer for one of the pages says about your boy drudge's 'report,'"Calling the story "a piece of fiction," Stephen Jones told the Daily Oklahoman that "there is not any aspect of this matter that is a practical joke nor should anyone treat it that way."
so, we have a person on record in a actual NEWSPAPER saying drudge is a liar.
and yes, abc TELEVISION ran a hit piece of fiction but that was written and funded by right-wingers and abc NEWS division had nok\thing to do with it, and according to some reporting, actually complained to the network about the inaccuracies.

here's something else for your right-wing conspiracy nuts. your own party is telling you to "shut it!" or thye told hastert hping the rest of you would get the message!
from todays chicago tribune:"Comments that Hastert made in a Tribune interview suggesting the scandal had been orchestrated by ABC News, Democratic political operatives aligned with the Clinton White House and liberal activist George Soros were considered a serious misstep in national Republican circles, an official said. Senior Republican officials contacted Hastert's office before his news conference Thursday to urge that he not repeat the charges, and he backed away from them in his news conference.
"The Chicago Tribune interview last night–the George Soros defense–was viewed as incredibly inept," a national Republican official said. "It could have been written by [comedian] Jon Stewart."

oh no, right-wing conspiracy nuts and drudge lovers! more "bad" news for y'all in your attempts to, as per all republicans, try and blame the democrats and to NEVER take personal responsibility!
today from the hill newspaper: "Longtime Republican was source of e-mails"
By Alexander Bolton
"The source who in July gave news media Rep. Mark Foley’s (R-Fla.) suspect e-mails to a former House page says the documents came to him from a House GOP aide.
That aide has been a registered Republican since becoming eligible to vote, said the source, who showed The Hill public records supporting his claim.
The same source, who acted as an intermediary between the aide-turned-whistleblower and several news outlets, says the person who shared the documents is no longer employed in the House.
But the whistleblower was a paid GOP staffer when the documents were first given to the media.
The source bolstered the claim by sharing un-redacted e-mails in which the former page first alerted his congressional sponsor’s office of Foley’s attentions. The copies of these e-mails, now available to the public, have the names of senders and recipients blotted out.
These revelations mean that Republicans who are calling for probes to discover what Democratic leaders and staff knew about Foley’s improper exchanges with under-age pages will likely be unable to show that the opposition party orchestrated the scandal now roiling the GOP just a month away from the midterm elections."
awww, too bad, huh? i'm SURE chip will have a great cartoon lambasting the hypocritical party of "family values" and their corrupt leadership. oh, and speaking of corrupt, karl rove's personal assitant just resigned because she took illegal gifts from old convicted felon jack a. and per the slimy white house, they wait til almost 5 p.m. on a friday evening to annouce it. they are freakin' hilarious, aren't they???

Hurray for good old fashioned morals, family values and Republican whistle blowers!

oh, nice try sam! here's a website where ya can go see how there are actual WRONG reporting in that story: http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001782.php
now, let me just mention the most salient point here. solomon says the land deal was a "sale" BUT it was actually a land transfer, and this is important, WHERE NO MONEY CHANGED HANDS. go read the rest of the story to see how bogus this "story" is.
btw, unlike the repubs, i and most other dems and progressives DESPISE corruption and have no problem hangin ANY dem politician out to dry, such as wm. jefferson. that dude needs to resign if the accusations are anywhere near true.

No nice try. I just post facts presented by those who know, unlike you.
"Senate ethics rules require lawmakers to disclose on their annual ethics report all transactions involving investment properties - regardless of profit or loss - and to report any ownership stake in companies.
Kent Cooper, who oversaw government disclosure reports for federal candidates for two decades in the Federal Election Commission, said Reid's failure to report the 2001 sale and his ties to Brown's company violated Senate rules.
"This is very, very clear," Cooper said. "Whether you make a profit or a loss you've got to put that transaction down so the public, voters, can see exactly what kind of money is moving to or from a member of Congress."
"It is especially disconcerting when you have a member of the leadership, of either party, not putting in the effort to make sure this is a complete and accurate report," said Cooper. "That says something to other members. It says something to the Ethics Committee."
Other parts of the deal - such as the informal handling of property taxes - raise questions about possible gifts or income reportable to Congress and the IRS, ethics experts said.
Stanley Brand, former Democratic chief counsel of the House, said Reid should have disclosed the 2001 sale and that his omission fits a larger culture in Congress where lawmakers aren't following or enforcing their own rules."

let's look at the good side. the subject is political in nature given the participants. well, that's good. we're learning more about the men and women we pay to take care of our money, our defense and … oh, i don't know, but i'm sure there are other important things. and we're talking about sex. that's good, isn't it? for who-knows-how-many generations, the absence of communication re sex has been cited as problematic. so we're talking sex and politics, aren't we? no need to refer to each other by labels such as 'right winger,' when civility and order better move the subjects along.
